Thanks. I have a sort of love / hate relationship with my Ric; it sounds great and it looks stunning, but its an awkward thing to play. Its heavy, slow and clumsy, and not at all comfortable to hold....but that tone !!!
Wow, really? Honestly I thought everyone alive would know this song; its hard to name a country where it wasn't a hit back in 1977. Its a 'classic', a 'standard', but if you're younger than about 40 I can see how it might have passed you by. The song is from an album called 'Deceptive Bends' by 10cc; which is totally brilliant and I can strongly recommend that you check it out. Glad you liked my attempt at it too :)
@@stevebadachmusic Fair enough... although I know about music from before I was born, so that's not really an excuse LOL! 'Deceptive Bends' is definitely one of their best, but also check out 'How Dare You' from 1976 and 'The Original Soundtrack' from '75 - that's the album with 'I'm Not In Love on it'.
@@SarahJonesBass I sold mine, too. My reasoning was that the Rickenbacker can only sound like a Rickenbacker, whereas my new bass was way more versatile. Anyway you have good taste in music and instruments.
You've encouraged me to pull the bass out of the cupboard and get stuck in, so thank you. Enjoyed your 'Special Brew' which I've now learned. Well played on this great song, the next one on my list. Keep 'em coming, all the best.
Ah, that's good to know! I think you'll enjoy learning this one; it a nice tune to play and realy satisfying when you nail it. Glad you enjoyed the vid :) x
Hey Sarah. Just wanted to say thanks for helping me learn the bass with your spot on covers. Inspired me to do my own for fun. Excellent vids and keep on posting!
I feel the same way about Rics…love the look and tone but it never feels as comfortable as a Fender P bass. But there should still be room in a bass players arsenal for a killer Rickenbacker bass.
It not as difficult as you might think. Just take each part as a separate entity and just concentrate on that. The put all the parts together later, when you're comfortable with it.
Thanks. I originally did this song a few years ago; you'll find the older video buried in my channel. I was never entirely happy with it though, so I re-did it.
Your original cover of this song was the reason I tried flat wound strings and still use them to this day unless of course I have to detune then I use a round wound 5 string set
Ah, OK. I actually have one bass strung with flatwounds, and 2 with rounds. I use the one with flats almost exclusively for recording now, which you can see in all of my more recent videos.
Great job, Sarah! Hope to see more of your RUclipss in the near future. Hope you will consider, "But I'd Like to Get to Know You" by Spanky and the Gang. Hope also that we can learn more from you about your music performance experiences and things you have learned from playing music with others live.
Another success Sarah. You must be fed up with the new lockdown as there will no more live gigs for the foreseeable future. You will just have to keep me entertained on here. Do you take requests?
Yeah, more lockdown and all gigs cancelled again. You can request anything you like; whether or not I do it is another matter. Try your luck and see what happens 😉
hello.... im very curious about you in the way of im also a bass player for MANY years....theres no info...so its hard to see out side your videos what made you get into bass and so on...I can say im 46..and I got my start at the north Carolina school of the arts from 79 to 90...I was there for orchestra and ballet...but music stuck....when you first coverd this song...it looked like a 300 series Ibanez you were using... I too use them...but I play 5 strings...and I have a gary willis fretless ...which is insane...the whole way I came about to that bass was a story...but I can say this.. if you are my age or older and you heard bands like the cars...louis Johnson...,.pino palladino....all of them played a stingray...thing is...once ernie ball got a hold of them he ruined them.. I bought many bass's over the years dying to get that sound....I found a video of him saying he changed them because he said they were to hot...ill never buy his products again...also I have a luthier friend who can easily hunt down that tone in the pick ups and pre amp because he can find the specs....anyway id love to get to know you..i like your covers and the things you choose.. im out side Cleveland ohio… hope all is well.. D
Not much to tell really. Born in the UK, grew up in Zimbabwe and South Africa, then settled back in England in the 80s. Started on bass at age 14 and left it for 20 years while I raised a family. Got back into it in 2010 and joined a band in 2016. And here we are!
Thanks. I have 4 basses, but one of them is currently up for sale because I don't use it much anymore. So I have The Rickenbacker in this video, a Fender Jazz American Elite, a Fender American standard Jazz and an Ibanez SR5000, which is the one I'm selling. And no, I'm not a pro but I am in a band which gigs every few weeks.
@@SarahJonesBass that's really cool. I'm just learning myself at the rip old age of 44 lol. I've wanted to play the bass guitar for as long as I remember, but life kept getting in the way. All my kids are well on now so I can put the time into it. Some day I'd like to be able to play a few numbers with a band. Keep the videos coming. Really enjoy them. Regards from Ireland.
@@GeorgeEI7KO 44? OK, so I'm a fair few years older than you, and I'm still learning. I only really started gigging with a band 3 years ago though, so trust me you're never too old to get into it.
@@SarahJonesBass I'm enjoying it. A local guy who's a legend on the scene has agreed to give me lessons too. So between him and what I'm doing myself, hopefully I'll make some decent progress. Oh and just to be even more odd, I'm left handed lol.
When I was 30 I was thinking I might like to learn a new instrument but 30 seemed a little old to start. Not long after having this thought I met a man who is really good at the Hawaiian guitar. I asked him how he learned to play it and he said, "I started on it when I was 30 I'm 80 now so I've been playing for 50 years." At that moment I realized it really is never too late.
Ah, glad you like the channel, thanks:) I use both on my basses, but currently only my American Standard Jazz bass has flats on it, I use DR Legend flats. My Rickenbacker definitely sounds more alive with roundwounds though, and its currently strung with DR Sunbeams.
This is his best bass that Graham Gouldman plays. I think that was the best fit for 10cc. They do it very nicely! greetings from Germany
That is one glorious bass guitar 😍
Yeah, it was pretty special. Sold now, though.
Disfrutando de tu gracia siempre , desde Honduras con mucho cariño , gracias....
Loved these song in my teenage years 10cc. Although they made around the time I was born.
Spectacular. That's a beautiful bass also. Always loved a Rickenbacker bass.

Thanks. Yes, the Ric was nice; I almost wish I had kept it!
A true pro! Best bass cover of this song out there
This was my second attempt, I think original video is still online somewhere but I was never happy with it.
Glad you enjoyed this one tho, thanks.
I've never heard this song before. What a great bass line, and super nice playing!

Really nice. Is the Rickenbacker all on the neck pickup? Sounds really mellow but with just a bit of punch. P
OK, my suggestion is Carpet Of The Sun by Renaissance, who had a superb bass player in Jon Camp. What do you think of that one?
