Hair loss can be a distressing experience, prompting many to seek effective solutions such as Finasteride-a popular choice in hair loss treatment for men. However, there's a crucial aspect to consider when using this medication: the potential development of Post-Finasteride Syndrome (PFS) upon abrupt discontinuation.
Finasteride, known for its ability to slow hair loss and even promote regrowth, has been a game-changer for many. Yet, the decision to cease its use must be carefully deliberated. Going "cold turkey" without a gradual tapering-off approach can lead to a host of problems.
Post-Finasteride Syndrome is a condition where individuals experience persistent and often severe side effects after stopping Finasteride. These can include sexual dysfunction, mood swings, and various hormonal imbalances. The abrupt cessation of the medication can trigger a hormonal rollercoaster, akin to opening Pandora's Box.
To mitigate this risk, it's imperative to seek professional advice and consider a gradual discontinuation plan. This measured approach minimizes the potential for the resurgence of symptoms and the development of PFS, ultimately safeguarding your hair and overall well-being. So, when it comes to Finasteride, think twice before going cold turkey-it's a decision that could have lasting consequences.

Respect to you doctor for discussing this topic. It is a very tough balance sometimes getting the correct dose of finasteride without sides. I stopped cold turkey, and went through a bad period. Smart and well though out video as always.
Thanks
Doctor, I have immense respect for this incredible content. I was really struggling whether I would get PFS, but your explanation of hormones perfectly clarifies the cause. I’ll start gradually tapering off Finasteride as you recommended. Thank you for saving a life-I can’t thank you enough.

Have you had any long term PFS suffering patients Dr? Or have all your patients recovered? Thanks for your great work 👍🏻
I have never seen a patient with PFS since l my patients follow my advice mostly.
@@hairtransplantinindia thanks for the reply. That’s reassuring to know as I’m sure with amount of Finasteride you have prescribed over the years, if this was as common a syndrome as the internet would suggest then you would have seen it in its abundance. Not to discredit its validity, but it’s important to hear about real world facts. Thank you 👍🏻
I would not be prescribing Finasteride if it was such a monster. There is no money to be made out of Finasteride for a doctor as many would suspect. @@willrigz6570

Hi doctor, so I quit finasteride 5 months ago after a long taper like you suggested. Side effects have slowly and gradually improved month to month. I recently started researching about PFS and now I'm having trouble. What I'm dealing with now is totally psychological, how do I deal with it? Do I stop looking into PFS and see a therapist? idk what to do.
Just stop reading about it and you shall be fine very soon.

Good video. We don’t all have the same biology and may respond differently. Most tolerate the medication well, but for some it can have serious long-lasting consequences.
Thanks for the note.
Thank you for the video, do you find that Saw Palmetto can induce the same side effects as Finasteride and if so should the same tapering off strategy be used? And thank you in advance.

Hi doctor , do you suggest your patients go on and off finasteride ?
Is it recommended even if the patient isn't seeing any side-effects and who falls between NW 2 and 3.

Thank you. I took 1.25mg finasteride a day in 2004 until 2005 at the age or 24 to 25. Just about one year. Unfortunately I never fully recovered from it to this day. The last 4 years I tried various treatments like DHEA, Pregnenolone, HCG and Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Even though my Testosterone levels are 3x higher than range (1800 ng/dl) it feels like I dont have testosterone in my body. It seems this drug damages something in the hormonal system. To add to this, before I started any treatment in 2019, I did a hormone profile and my Total T was on the upper end of the scale (756 ng/dl) and my DHT was on the top end as well. Its not a hormonal imbalance but I think a damage to the receptors. With 16 years I took accutane. Maybe that did a pre damage already making finasteride doing the final damage. We will never know because big pharma is not interested in curing people they messed up. Back then in 2005 there was very little information available. After experiencing terrible crippling side effect, I went off cold turkey of course.
Edit: What I want to add, I react very severely to anything that influences DHT. Even taking a Zinc (5ar blocker) supplement gives me full blown PFS symptoms.
I'm sorry man. That's fucked up.
Thanks for sharing. Finasteride is not for everyone, that is why it is not OTC.

Great vid, I took 1mg oral for 2 days and experienced a lot of ED. 24 years otherwise healthy. Should I stop immediately after only 2 days? Thanks
2 days is not enough time for the dosage to build up. You can stop straightaway. Get your total testosterone and total estradiol levels checked and then seek a consultation if you wish to.

Hi Doctor, I'm a male & now 30 years old. I was on Finasteride 1 mg (3x a week) + 1 ml 5% minoxidil daily before my HT (on frontal scalp & mid scalp) for a year. Then continued with Finasteride after HT (HT was done in March 2022) on a daily basis (1 mg fin per day) & 1 ml 5% minoxidil daily for a year. 6 months ago, I consulted a different Doctor & he prescribed 0.5mg dutesteride per day & oral minoxidil 2.5mg per day + 5% foam minoxidil on a daily basis. He told me to stop Finasteride immediately & start taking Dutesteride. After being on this new regime for 6 months, I can say my frontal hair line looks weaker than when I was on Fin. Plus, the hair behind my frontal scalp hair line have also become thin & some have fallen. I can see gaps, which was not too visible while I was on Fin. I do admit, in the last 2 to 3 months I increased my consumption of Ice cream to a high level (not consuming daily, though 2 to 3 times a week, tubs of ~200 to 300 ml in each sitting). Could this also be the reason for my hair loss? Or is Dutesteride the culprit?
Hair loss due to androgenic alopecia is progressive. Even a DHT blocker cannot completely prevent it. Ice-creams do not cause hair loss.
Hello doctor
I would like to know how to flush out every 3 months as you have mentioned before, as this sounds like cold turkey to me? Wouldnt this encourage disturbing the hormones as mentioned in this video?
Thanks :)

Doctor, can we take finastrite 3 days a week rather than everyday after hair transplant?
I would not advise it.
Does the same apply to dutasteride? With the drug having such a long active half-life i would think cold turkey wouldn't make a difference since going back to baseline is a slow process. I took what i think may have been a a very large single dose and i didn't like the sides as compared to fin at all so i didn't take anymore of the drug. It's been 2 months since i stopped and i still have sides. I'm hoping this is just simply because the dose i took was very big and it may take longer than expected to go back to normal.
Dutasteride blocks almost all of your DHT ! That is worrisome. I try not to prescribe this drug due to bad experiences with patients in the past.
@@hairtransplantinindia yeah. I'm trying not to worry too much about it tho since i'm sure i'll be fine. I've been on finasteride on and off for a while with 0 issues. Sometimes cold turkey. I always recovered extremely fast tho this is just me.
Definitely best to just have people stick to fin and cut back on dose and frequency to avoid sides, exorcise and stay healthy to produce natural to make up for the lost dht etc.
I tried dutasteride topically semi-convinced only a small amount would actually penetrate the skin and hair papilla. But evidently it was a wrong assumption. The drug goes systemic and it was in a 0.3% concentration in a glycol solution which made the drug even more likely to penetrate. So most likely, i'll just have to wait as i'm sure my DHT is still largely suppressed.
The studies iv'e seen seem to indicate there's a minimum of a 2-3 month wait for dht to return to baseline in doses over 0.5. I'll leave an update in about another month or 2.
How u doing now@@nathanc3797
Sir, then how to take a break of 3 weeks after three months? Can we gradually off the dose or is it okay to stop suddenly for 1 month?
2-3 weeks is not too much of a time gap to have problems as I have discussed later in this video- 5AR that is inhibited has a half life of 30 days
Sorry doctor. I think you replied to this comment while I was editing and now you're comment is gone before I read it. Could you please reply again. Really sorry doctor.
Unfortunate that I saw this video late. Been on Finasteride(for DPA/DUPA) for about 2 years (1 mg/day). I got ED and my doc lowered my dose to 1mg every other day. That improved my ED almost to normal before getting low again. So after 3 months he asked me to go turkey cold. Now it's been 2 months since I'm off the drug and experienced the deception in the first 2 weeks where my erection is back to normal and all the symptoms you mentioned above. And now my doc asked me to get back on the drug since I have heavy hair-fall now. Basically I went turkey cold and now I'm back on it. now will it undo the damage? what should I do please help doctor!
Sounds like it is not worth even trying the medication if you believe people stand a chance of experiencing PFS on discontinuation then.
Being on medication without understanding your hormonal statues and taking it without supervision is what lands you in serious problems.
This video is amazing.
In one of your other videos you said to stop taking finasteride every 3 months for 2 weeks to reduce build of the drug? I'm confused?

I had sides on the fin, I had the crash, and now after a year or so I still have sexual problems. I don’t know really how to stop this. I went to so many docs but no one knows what to do to get better. And luckly or unfortunately.. I don’t know how to put this.. but I didn’t even need finasteride. I was already on an antiandrogenic birth control with cyproterone acetate and the only reason I was losing some hair was because I was anemic. What were your levels before starting?
If you are on finasteride and doing fine. Stay on it. Don’t try to quit it. If you can’t stay on it for the gazillion side effects profile then lower the dose first, if that does not work, ween off it. Otherwise get ready to waste 1-2 years of your life or may be more.
PS: depends how long you have been on it.
