Mike Smith Duran was great, no question about it- the best I've seen at lightweight. But I've always been intrigued by something Ray Arcel, Duran's long-time trainer, said in an interview. He'd seen pretty much all of them over a sixty year period, and he said that hands down, the best was Leonard. Benny, that is. For me, that doesn't show up in the old films. But those are just old films. Arcel was no sentimentalist, and he was very definite on the subject. He said Benny Leonard was the king of the deepest talent pool in the history of the division- every guy in the top ten would have made a worthy champion. But Leonard was the class of the field. As I say, I'll take Duran. But it's interesting sometimes to wonder how a guy like Leonard, or Mickey Walker- or Jack Johnson, for that matter- would have fared against today's competition.

Franco Garcia I agree with you. I've seen a fair amount of footage of Benny Leonard, and a whole lot of Duran. I just can't see Benny lasting the distance against Roberto Duran. So call it nostalgia on Arcel's part, loyalty to a great sporting figure from his youth, and remember- Benny Leonard was an ethnic hero in New York at a time when those rivalries were nakedly promoted in the street as well as the arena. Arcel would have looked up to Leonard as a representative of his people. And Benny was probably nice to the kid when they met. Everything makes an impression. But Arcel knew how great Duran was. He knew.

When you really think about it and realize that Duran was a natural Lightweight (practically unbeatable in that Division) who in order to pursue bigger paydays had to blow up in weight and fight physically larger opponents, most of whom had great punching power and who were often stronger and younger than he, and to still have had great success in those higher weight divisions and still be standing at the end of vicious matches against the likes of Marvin Haggler and Iran Barkley, both of whom were known for knocking out the majority of their opponents, well that is just a testimony to how great and determined a boxer he was. Sure, he suffered a devastating knockout against Thomas Hearns, a much larger, younger opponent who caught him with a perfect punch coming off the ropes --- wouldn't be the first time a great boxer suffered a crushing knockout defeat --- it happened to many of the greats including Joe Louis, Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard and even Hearns himself several times. And as for the infamous "No Mas" fight, well he likely would have lost to Leonard that night regardless of whether he had trained properly (which he had not) since Ray was determined that evening not only to avoid the same face to face infighting that lost him the first match with Duran (the one and only time Leonard lost a fight in his prime) but also to try and publicly embarrass Duran --- a simple, no doubt about it decision would not have satisfied Leonard and his fans at that point, they were out to try and belittle and humiliate Duran in every way possible by avoiding an actual slugfest and making it a bit of a clown show. Duran (who was truly not himself that night, for various reasons for which he had mostly himself to blame), was not going to give Leonard and his fans the luxury of dragging out that type of farce for a full 15 rounds so he simply turned his back on everyone (including his own fans) and said screw it --- a decision which greatly hurt his image at the time. I still say he would have definitely lost that night had it gone the distance since Leonard, having learned from the first fight that he could not outslug Duran, would have mostly danced around and outpointed him (a tactic he used to great effect in his later victory against Marvin Hagler). Taking all this into account, Duran, having reached absolute greatness in the Lightweight division and stepping up to Welterweight to defeat an 'in his prime' Sugar Ray Leonard, will always make him one of the absolute all time greats for me.

The lure of making more money and winning more world titles. For the smaller weight boxers is to good an opportunity for most of them to simply let pass them by.So as these smaller weight fighters move up into heavier and heavier weight divisions. They tend to lose at some point as sometimes no amount of skill can overcome a naturally bigger man just as skilled as they are.At some point shear size can become more than one can overcome.Which is all the more impressive what Manny Pacquiao has achieved in his boxing career.

To go up and fight Marvin Hagler at middleweight when Hagler was probably top three all-time middleweights and to go the distance and it's quite competitive at an aging Duran come on give him credit. He went through a. Of time where he just was flat Kirkland Lane got them at the right time but then he comes back and beats a Davey Moore who was a young Champion but still a good fighter with a big punch and Duran destroy him. We all know what happened with the second Leonard fight come down from 200 pounds just was nowhere near the same fighter as he was in Montreal end of that story. 33 year old Duran fighting Thomas Hearns in his very Prime but he did get caught with a great punch so that's that. But you but a hungry Roberto Duran like when he fought Carlos Palomino, you put him in with Floyd Mayweather jr. And that he would chew him up.

Bad interview.....also the true winner was Don King who gave
$7millions to Duran up front, to rematch in 3 months while Duran was still celebrating the victory from the first fight...Sugar Ray and camp knew this, and took it to their advantage. Smart move by Leonard, not so smart from Duran.

I have never liked Ray at all but I give him alot of credit the man is a warrior. However if you watch and listen closely hes starting to have cognitive problems. I've noticed this in interviews the last several years. Hopefully it doesn't get really bad. He still looks great you can't really tell he was a fighter.

    Personally, I can't stand Leonard.
Anybody who thinks goofing around and pulling childish faces at opponents makes him a great fighter is mistaken.
By now we all know how presssure was put on Duran to take that second fight. And we all know that Duran was overweight and un-prepared.
If they had done the decent thing and allowed proper preparation, there is no way Duran would have lost.
And we all know thar Hagler was robbed.
    Leonard is a showman.
The worst kind of sportsman. Only in it for the $$$$$

Duran was a great fighter but he was not the best. Those that are in the best category have dominated multiple divisions against top elite killers. Duran got his ass handed to him once he didn't have all the advantages. A truly great fighter can come in at a disadvantage and still dominate. See Floyd Mayweather!

Are you kidding me? He moved up in weight and beat the hell out of Sugar Ray even tho Leonard was much taller and had 8 inches in reach advantage. And people call him a brawler, smh.
He then went on and beat even bigger guys like Moore and Barkley. The same Barkley who knocked out Hearns.
And he went 15 good rds against Hagler. One of the reasons I dont consider Hearns and Hagler that good is because they had size advantages and/or freakishly long reaches but still couldn't beat Leonard. Duran did.
Even back in the days the p4p number 1 from the 70s was considered to be not Ali or Foreman but Duran.
He is definitely in the top 5 p4p greatest of all time.

KnuckleGame100 Yours is the Most crazy and ignorante comment that i ve read in a long time. Duran is the first lightweight in history of boxing to win the middelweight, Came 12 pounds to fight Sugar at Sugar ´s terms. Fought Hagler in Haglers Prime,, Maywether waited until Pacman had grandsons to fight him. ..Very, very stupid comment with all do respect.
