  • Spearfishing in New Zealand (North Island) + Catch n Cook only a few hours from Auckland. I go on a solo overnight camping trip to scout some new coastline in the middle of Winter. Searching new terrain on the hunt for dinner I get lucky on some nice Snapper, pig fish, and a Scorpian Fish. Launching the Kayak at sunrise I encounter amazing visibility and fish life and catch some food for dinner!

    Hey mate, how do you go about looking for new spots. What features do you look for on a map. Is it best to fish round reefs?

    • @olliecraig-primalpursuit
      @olliecraig-primalpursuit  3 года назад +1

      Hey mate, first decide on a spot that is far enough away from a major city not to have too much fishing pressure. Next I will look for points, pinnacles, anything that is going to gather current as current means fish. I also do most of my research digging up old forums on the Internet etc for spots etc. You will be amazed by how much info you can dig up! But yes I usually stick close to reefs as hunting snapper etc they won't be far away.

    Shame you got tired. There are often a few crays in those rocks. Surprised you didn't see any packhorse crays as they should be starting to come into the shallows to moult - although the timing varies from season-to-season. Some monsters have been taken not far from where you were diving. Hopefully demand from China doesn't pick up too much after the Covid-19 shutdown there, but I suspect it already has.

    • @olliecraig-primalpursuit
      @olliecraig-primalpursuit  4 года назад

      Yeah I was suprised I didn't see any. I had a fairly descent look but didn't even see 1 cray. I think the packies do congregate this time of year so maybe that's why? Who knows, maybe if I had gone 10 more meters I may have stumble upon a few good ones..Going back up this week to a spot not far from there where I did well last year on the packies at this exact time of year. I guess I will find out if my theory is true..

    Obviously you care a lot about looking after the maximum quality of the fish, in NZ we are missing one of the vital steps in the "Iki" procedure that is key to preserving the meat. And that's running a wire down the spine to sever the nerves. If you do this, the fish won't even go into rigor mortis at all - the flesh will immediately relax, and none of the stress chemicals will taint the meat. I have no idea why this information isn't spread more widely. Everyone shows each other the spiking/bleeding, no one seems to know about the wire. Trust me, if you get a chance try it out on two identical fish, with/without. The regular one will be like a brick when you pull it out of the chillybin, the treated one will be soft and supple. The bigger the fish, the more important this is - especially on something like kingfish where it's best as sashimi. If you don't do this to a Bluefin Tuna it's actually totally worthless when it gets to Japan.
    Video explaining it all... (note, he cuts the tail, after you get good at it you don't need to, but I actually found it easier to practice going from the tail end, and you know if it's working because the fish wriggles as you push in the wire)
    ruclips.net/video/TS4AM9mPX-8/видео.html
    After a bit of practice it's actually quite easy - you can do it with a very thin metal kebab skewer, it doesn't need to be wire, but the fat metal A string from a guitar is also about the right size.

    • @TheAlastairBrown
      @TheAlastairBrown 4 года назад +1

      www.q.turi.ne.jp/shinkei_jime/index.html Is the best pictorial I could find - the Vox video doesn't actually show you in detail about the spine part.

    • @olliecraig-primalpursuit
      @olliecraig-primalpursuit  4 года назад

      Awesome, agree it isn't widely practiced here or understood! I just saw someone posting up the other day about it. I'll make sure for my next mission to give it a go. Definitely sounds worthwhile!

    • @TheAlastairBrown

      @@olliecraig-primalpursuit I've never tried aging - but that would definitely make an interesting experiment video followup - 10 days to 2 weeks aging fish in the fridge. I'd be really interested to see what smoking it after that period of time would be like. Some tips that I found - initially it's confusing about where you are aiming the wire, say you have the fish upright in swimming position, and you have removed the head and you are looking at it front on(staring down the spine barrel), the spine layout is basically an "A" at the top where the nerve is, an O for the bone in the middle, and a V for the blood vessel below. Trying to draw it in text is difficult, but below is the "diagram."
      A = The nerve triangle passage you are aiming for
      0 = The spine bone.
      V = A blood vessel.
      You will be able to tell if you're doing it properly because the muscles of the fish contort exactly following the wire as it goes along. It's easiest to practice from the tail end so you can actually see what's happening(just snap the tail sideways), but eventually you'll be able to do it going through your initial "iki" spike. Something that I find hilarious about how people process Kingfish, is that everyone says you have to wait a day until you eat it, which is actually just waiting for the meat to soften back down from rigor mortis. With this method it will be perfect the entire time.
      Anyway - I def enjoy your videos, it will be interesting to see you trying it from scratch. This stuff is so much easier if someone's actually there demonstrating it. When I first tried, I kept trying to put the wire down the blood vessel, which was quite difficult haha.
