This video took way longer than expected, but pretty sure this is the last I'll be making on the sequels like this. Thank you everyone for being willing to wait so long! Also sorry for the JJ interview audio at the beginning. For some reason, the audio is just THAT low in that part. Edit: seems like some clips got lowered in the rendering. I’m sorry! Won’t happen again
Yeah Finn and Rey should of gotten together romantically in the Rise of the Skywalker instead of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo and Rey JJAdams said that they're like brother and sister and that kiss wasn't even romantic. If they were like a brotherly sisterly type of relationship between them why did they kiss why didn't Finn and Rey get together romantically instead? I feel that Finn and Rey should of gotten together romantically at the end of the Rise of the Skywalker instead of Rey traveling alone.
Amazing how they cared sooo much about preventing a interracial relationship from happening in the sequels that they were willing to sacrifice good storytelling as the cost. Then the bastards had the audacity to blame their multitude of failures on the Star Wars fandom! I swear, if Disney co. was a person they'd be that insane villain in a movie who blows up a children's hospital and then screams at the hero: "look what you made me do!!!!"
Agreed but I can GUARANTEE you if the interracial relationship were reversed which is Black Woman/White Man, I am sure Disney would not have minded as much. Black Men/White Woman couples are the most hated.
Man, this just makes me so nostalgic for The Force Awakens era man. That time was so exciting, so heartwarming; it was a time of love and happiness for us Star Wars fans. I truly do miss that era. It was a simpler, exciting time.
I’m imaging Rey having conversations with a comatose Finn in the bacta pod on several occasions, who may or may not could hear her. Maybe she even reads his thoughts or dreams, experiencing his terrifying brief duel with Ren while she was knocked out at the time. Even let Poe join in, the three of them together in the room. I mean, it’s like these movies were afraid of dialogue, moments to breathes and for actors to be, well, actors.
Watching tfa as a young 13-14 black kid and imaging myself as finn (or luke), having a crush on daisy ridley, actually wanting to see them together. And then having that tossed out in the sequel broke me man. Like i was a hormonal middle school male going to see a space war movie and i saw that relationship a mile away. P. S. I agree that the internet has a weird problem with romance. It's kinda sad..
Wow, I've never related so much before. My crush on Daisy Ridley was intense as a 13-14 year old 🥲 I feel the exact same way man... It's so sad... The TFA era was another time 😪
I've heard comparisons between TFA/Anastasia/Tangled before, and at the back of my mind I was like "Yeah, I kinda see it", but after really having them put side-by-side like this it's pretty insane how spot-on the tropes are between them. All Lucasfilm had to do was follow through. Instead, they tossed Finn aside and shackled Rey to Kylo with both her and Finn suffering in the process.
Fans ruined it. Ik you seen the kylo ren fans growing. Its funny bc they then made kylo ren return to the lightside and all his fans went away bc they liked him a sith lord trying to be vader
@@leopardtree2249 Funny thing is Kylo could've been redeemed without him being shipped with Rey. But this isn't the first time I've seen reactionary writing and I know it won't be the last.
@slvrcobra1337 This is the first time I've heard that comparison. And as someone who loves Anastasia and Tangled, but thought TFA was average, homie just blew my mind.... And at the same time pissed me off by affirming what I felt was the case. That Finn and Rey were to be a thing. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why...
They were Endgame. They were goals. FReY was what was supposed to happen. It was a mess that it didn't. I'm usually not for the main female and male lead getting together that's predictable but they had such natural chemistry that they had to sideline Finn in the next films. Now aside from that there was a force that kept them together. They were two characters who were trying their place in the Galaxy. Two kindred spirits that needed each other. Finn SHOULD have been the Last Jedi in all intent and purposes. That Lightsaber belonged to Finn. Rey could have gotten her own saber I would have turned her staff into double bladed Lightsaber. Soo many other things I can say here but this is long.
I care about Finn and Rey so much that even though I said I was no longer interested in sequel trilogy content, if they made a live-action follow up show starring them I would, in fact, watch it in a heartbeat. Disney has the opportunity to clean up the mess they made of the sequels by giving us a Finn and Rey centered follow-up show.
The fact that TLJ & RoS make Kyle Ron the most important character in the whole trilogy, essentially the protagonist, shafting both Rey & Finn is such a drag. Finn is reduced to b-plot comedic relief, that never accomplishes anything and Rey becomes a waif that gets manipulated by Kyle's sad murder boy deal, and exists to try to save him. I liked both these characters, but they basically die after TFA. After TFA everything revolves around Kyle. He worked in that film because he was a good villain; but then he's not a villain any more, he's just misguided; all the murder, torture and manipulation isn't his fault. And then RoS goes even further, he was brainwashed, the character from the past two films wasn't even really him, it was a completely different character. Ugh. TFA's heart was the bond between Finn & Rey, two orphans that found each other and connected in a way neither had ever had before. Two pasts of suffering, but that pain couldn't quash the good in either. Finn swallowing his fear to go after Rey, Rey finally finding someone that came back for her. But nope, thrown out the window, and the two no longer interact in any meaningful way. Finn's force-sensitivity hinted at all the back to his first scene, and throughout TFA, never addressed. His training and indoctrination as a stormtrooper. Nadda. Rey's parentage a garbage fire. Her connection to anyone other than Kyle, a big ol' goose egg. But we got Reylo, and Palpatine. . . yippee.
So in middle school and high school, a bunch of me and my girls were into Usher, Boys II Men, and boy bands in general. When we talked about white boy bands or members of them our guy friends would say they were gay and laugh. But when we talked about Usher or Boys ll Men they would get weirdly quiet or say they were drug dealers or say they corrupted women. And that’s why I think Disney sidelined Finn, not for white girls, but for immature white men who feared a hot black dude hooking up with a white girl. So because Disney, a white woman got to be hooked up with a terrible entitled white man from a ruling rich family with a terrible temper instead. Basically shipping Cinderella with Henry Kissinger. Disney didn’t cater to the left or the right. Disney catered to terrible white people.
That's American history and by extension American entertainment history in a nutshell. Arguably the biggest reason why the earliest most popular jazz singers were women like ma Rainey and Bessie Smith was because black women singers who stirred hormones were never a threat to the white male status quo. Its often referred to as not letting certain influences "into the household" or "into the bedroom", and they always are referring to the bedrooms of white girls on the verge of exploring their sexuality. Having such girls getting pushed towards those sensual or sexual urges by black men was a taboo. And that continued through the jazz age as well and for the years after the initial arrival and run of Rock 'n Roll. Its no surprise the Supremes, for example, were by far the Motown group that white consumers purchased the most. Doesn't matter how much black female artists push the boundaries in terms of sex and music, they don't register as a threat to white dudes.
Thank you for putting words to concepts and frustrations that I felt deeply but couldn't ever articulate. (I nearly screamed in angry realization at the "repurposed hand plot" part - you're so right.) I agree 100% - we need a Finn/Rey story. I would say Dave Filoni or Jon Favreau to direct, but I'd honestly love to see what Kenneth Branagh could do with the characters...
Huh, the guy from Anastasia and Flynn struck me more as like Han, but there are parallels here... Also, I read a fancomic/doujin on Pixiv once written before TLJ, and in one of them Finn was actually seemingly brought with Rey to Ach-To and Luke taught Rey how to bring Finn back to consciousness with telepathy. It was very sweet and I think it would have actually been a great way to get Finn involved in the main story again.
They wanted ship her with maniac instead of a wholesome guy! They had great chemistry. Just to avoid a black man and white woman, but let that be the reverse and it would be no problem.
Poe: “And you-” Finn: “Will walk out of her life forever. Jedi don’t have attachments, especially with a stormtrooper like me.” Followed by the new Jedi philosophy where attachments ARE allowed because emotional repression is how you get Vader’s and Kylo’s. Finn and Rey become the first Jedi couple and they start a new and refined Jedi Order. Some alternate universe somewhere has a DOPE sequel trilogy
Ughhh I’m so mad this this isn’t the route they went with, it would have been perfectly in line with what past trilogies have been telling us and would have given Finn a decent character arc. 😭
Some alternate universe also gave JJ the entire sequel and gave him and his crew the time to tell an amazing story with Finn and Rey at the front of it.
So the reason Rian Johnson got carte blanche to wreak havoc on The Last Jedi's established story line was because Disney needed a hatchet job done on the Finn/Rey romance. Once they found the right man for the job, they averted their gaze and allowed their fixer to do the deed on his own terms.
You bring insights into these characters that I'd never thought to question or look at. Much appreciated 🙏 And I actually appreciate the ST more now. Which is very hard to do. Kudos.
The racist Star Wars fans were always trying to make sense of why something couldn’t be black in a fantasy world and continue today. The one thing I hated seeing when the first TFA teaser came out is people confused that there was a black stormtrooper. Remember how Disney shrunk his appearance on the Chinese movie poster? And the blatant racism of minimizing his role and any type of romantic interest. Then they tried to convince us that Kylo Ren would fulfill that role is some of the most cringy scenes since “let’s try spinning, that’s a cool trick”. What’s so crazy is that once the fans started speaking of Finn and Rey; Disney was like, “she doesn’t need a man”. This was partially a response to the Mary Sue comments the character was getting because she is suppose to be a strong woman. But they paired her with the most abuse person as a love interest. 😂 And then! We’re just going to make this Kylo’s story and how her love redeems him. What the actual f!ck. 😂😂😂
THIS MAN SPEAKING FACTS!! AHHHHH! I wish y’all can see my reaction. He said everything I’ve been trying to say for years now. I’m crying man😖😭😭😭😭😭😭!!! Star Wars gave birth to something new and Like BRUUUH Then THEY KILLED IT. Literally. THEY KILLED IN THE BAD SENSE. When force awakens came out And I saw the trailer I new it was gonna be great and it was! I was like “ WHOOOOOO” les go! And I saw it Finn and Rey well hahaha… yeah boi I see it and it was meant to be. They were the start of something new for Star Wars. Finn and Rey. But then Star Wars when they came out with the next movie I was like , wtf is this? Like did the plan…not work out. It was full proof. And I did some thinking, meditating, thinking, coffee, researching, thinking why how why and WHY This happened. And why Star Wars destroyed something that was gonna be so good. Star Wars like: “ actually nah fam, Finn and Rey isn’t gonna work out it’s to risky and also we don’t think the peeps will like it that much, so we gonna enter the villain who killed Han Solo to be Rey’s partner and be the new face for Star Wars saga. Also Star Wars: since we are Disney and we are all about change we know what the peeps like so how about in the far far future maybe we’ll idk we’ll put some romantic interests between out new lead characters but they not male and female, we going for what the people like, we gonna do female and female love interests hmmmm hmm?? (Or male male same thing) cause u know maybe we can change the story a bit loss it up have some fun yeah? Change the OG I mean we can change the rules and morales of the world yeah? The peep will love. TbhMe: *Me with a laser sword and ignited it* “Man, Fc*k your morales!” You destroyed treasure! You have covered mud on something that was beautiful just because you thought it would be risky?! *Also for those who read this comment is all true feelings and half of it may be jokes but overall just a comment I don’t hate anyone and also don’t hate me for it and if you do I really don’t give a sh*t* but making sure u know I mean no harm by any of it I’m just an upset fan and I love Star Wars but I’m not fat loser who just thinks it’s funny to comment some bs and that’s all. Nah, I’m actually healthy and I touch grass but yeah Star Wars….man you really done it this time man. The last jedi and rise of skywalker. It was not it.
The most tragic thing for me is how much The Rise of Skywalker made me hate Rey, especially as a love interest or best friend for Finn. She treated him like absolute garbage and betrayed him for the guy who sliced his back open. She doesn't deserve him
Remember when she told him, “People keep saying that they know me, but I don’t believe they do.” That honestly made me say, “AYO Rey I know you’re mad at DJ Palpy for what happened to your family but that’s harsh as hell!” Edit: 7/11/22 So uh... I read the novelization of The Rise of Skywalker a few days ago... and I found out something horrifying... Rey MIND TRICKED Finn. It was during the passana dessert scene where she sensed Kylo and when she told him to go and that it would be alright, she used the force to mind trick him into following Poe into Ochi's ship. Like between that and her constantly running away from Finn and Poe towards Kylo Ren the whole movie, I much prefer TFA at this point. Because TROS Rey just treats Finn and everyone like garbage.
I was one of the few people who actually shipped Finn and Rey because they had a great chemistry with each other and truly felt like they were in love with each other, I never liked nor understood why Rey and Kylo Ren was a popular ship
I shipped them since the beginning. It just made sense. Their characters had so much natural chemistry built up and followed so many traditional, romantic tropes. Such a waste of potential. Didn’t get rid of a romance, they got rid of a relationship that could’ve been one of the strongest
You have the best takes on Star Wars I've ever heard. I'm constantly saying 'OMG YES' and don't think there's anything you've said that I disagree with. I wish Disney would hire you on to consult on future projects, they'd be much better for it.
I just watched the Force Awakens and after watching this video, I'm thinking about not watching the rest of the trilogy because I was hoping Finn and Rey would get together, lol.
I honestly never got a romantic vibe between them in TFA. They discarded Finn entirely as a character. He should have become a jedi alongside Rey. Them having a romantic relationship is the least of my worries.
The sequel trilogy is far removed from any continuity that makes sense, mainly due to mismanagement, wanting to implement a political agenda into the franchise and bad writing. So that’s why these characters ended up the way they were. I expect the sequels to be decannonized, and be replaced by Disney plus series and movies spearheaded by Dave Filony and John Favreau.
@@tuftycupid8721 I don't understand the Poe&Finn gay ship. Now I understand why poe might be, (if you read into it) but Finn has never shown any romantic interest in Poe or towards any other character in the sequel trilogy besides Rey... period.
@@roycewallace9472 exactly, people here says that Finn and Rey weren't meant to be together romantically it wasn't hinted that and that Rey friendzone him in the Force Awakening. I mean when did that happen? When did she friendzone him? I don't remembering Rey ever friendzoneing Finn, people here also says that Kylo Ren and Rey had romantic feelings and chemistry in the Force Awakening, Last Jedi I mean why would she be even interested in someone who killed many even his own father and uncle in front of her and almost killing the man that she loves which Finn, and she rejected him for Kylo Ren. People here gotten their information from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, the internet, Wikiform message board that the writers even said that Finn and Rey were never romantically interested in each other they were friends and Kylo Ren and Rey were especially their DNA if that's so they've should of been related not each other's love interests and have Finn and Rey together romantically at the end of the Rise of the Skywalker instead.
@@bhd7721 yes I agree. In the force awakens their close friendship (even if I don't see it as romantic) I could see it's potential to have been the sequel trilogy main Romance. But Disney and lucas films cater to the reylo's and followed up on Rian Johnson(The Ultimate reylo Fan) and made it Canon. So at this point even if their close friendship would have and probably should have led to something... it's dead now. And from this point on for Finn to even continue to entertain the thought of pursue a romantic relationship with Rey is weak. When she obviously chose kylo over him in the sequel trilogy. Literally.. force pushed him... out of the main conflict in the rise of Skywalker.
In TFA, even Han knew there was something going on between Rey and Finn, when he said, “You’ve got another problem, women always figure out the truth.”
Glad you typed "black man and white woman" rather than interracial. Because the latter doesn't bother Disney or Hollywood as much as the former does. If Rey had been cast with a black actress and Finn was white, there would have been no hesitation by Disney to at the very least seriously consider pairing the two. No one would have blinked twice. I mean the same Disney company took over the reigns of Spiderman, placed him inside the MCU and pretty much gave him two black female love interests even though Peter Parker NEVER had a single black love interest in the thousands of comic books he has been in for over six decades. In fact every time these Hollywood studios agree to racebend a white female comic book character by casting a black actress, they are often agreeing to an interracial relationship where there wasn't one previously. Examples would include Iris West and her relationship with Barry Allen/Flash and Selina Kyle and her status with Bruce Wayne/Batman. And before people come at me, Selina Kyle was a character who existed since the 1940s and the only time she was not white was a brief representation by Eartha Kitt on the 1960s Batman show, a series in which the other two actresses to fill in for that role of Selina were white actresses. 99.9% of the times that character had been portrayed in comic books, live action TV series, animations, coloring books, movies, etc. as a white female. So when TPTB cast the role in the upcoming Batman flick with a black actress they are essentially giving a thumbs up to an interracial romance onscreen between a black woman and a white woman. That's fine, but those same studios drag their feet when it comes to black men and white women. In the comic books Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, Scarlet Witch and others actually have had (or still have) black male love interests but I don't see that happening with their onscreen portrayals. Or, in the case of Supergirl, TPTB were quick to end any type of WW/BM relationship before it truly has a chance to begin. And outside of comic books lets not forget that Disney intentionally looked for a black actress only to play the Little Mermaid in a live action flick all the while planning to keep the male love interest white. Also modern Hollywood doesn't have much of a problem with casting interracial relationships between white and Asian characters and white and non-white Hispanics. The ONLY true taboo for the big screen in a tentpole film is a relationship between a white woman and a black man. And that is why I had immediate suspicions that Rey and Finn would not become a "thing."
The Paramount Sonic movie had the human lead white guy have a Black wife and literally nobody cared or mentioned it. All their energy was spent on Uncanny Valley Human Teeth Rabid Possum looking Sanic. No typo. Can we get some of that energy for Disney or... nah.
@@DemonicRemptionEdward was no where near as abusive as Kylo Twilight is a case study in gothic stories and byronic characters. The codependency is an issue tho ngl. But it's not meant to be real life, but rather tragic and *should be* a cautionary tale. Not a manual for life. These are characters; not people
I agree. In Finn's proposal he talks about how Rey made him feel good and how he wants to be a better person. In Kylo's he talks about how no one else cares about Rey and she is nothing to anyone else but him. That is so controlling and awful!
I do want more FinnRey content in the future, but I also just want John and Daisy to keep working together because they have such natural chemistry and ease with one another. It's so easy to accept that they love each other, regardless of the sense of the word. Also in the Tangled animated series, Eugene is revealed to be a lost prince, furthering the Finn parallels... BRB, gotta check if an extended tangled-finnrey fic exists yet, and write it if it doesn't.
I didn't like Finn and Rose/Finn and Jannah together they also had zero chemistry together and Rose was a pest anyways stopping Finn from trying to find Rey. And Jannah was was his sister anyways.
Everything about Finn, Rey, and Finnrey makes me so sad. When I first watched TFA Finn was my favorite character and I thought it was obvious that he and Rey would end up together (and apparently I was right!!). Looking back on it now I just get depressed because I can still *feel* the love and chemistry between them but I know it was thrown out then window for all the wrong reasons. So much for being progressive I guess.
I got major shipping vibes from these movies between Rey and Finn. I was invested in the idea that no one had ever really cared about her until Finn (solidified when he regains consciousness, simply asks if she's alright and she offers him her hand), and that Finn didn't have anyone to fight for until Rey (solidified by him planning a suicide mission to rescue her despite only knowing her for a day). Then they decided to make Rey fall in love with Kylo. The simplest love story in Star Wars wrote itself and they screwed it up.
Nobody likes the square black men. It is getting to the point it doesn't work to be profoundly black physically which usually excludes men my hue. Welcome to the club.
Much as I hate the sentiment behind this it makes me retch to this day if I see it anywhere.. like take Finn out of the equation &it still just feels SO WRONG &FORCED like I had to ask myself what in the fanfiction Frick am I watching?
I not going to lie......I would love to watch a show with Finn and Rey and protagonist, if this mean developed them both correctly.....I would be on board.
The best format for a Finn and Rey should would be a 'buddy cop' form! Imagine Rey and Finn traveling the galaxy to help the damage of the First Order, but wacky hijinks ensues and Rey and Finn have absolutely no idea what they're doing (but it doesn't actually matter because it'll be fixed by the end and we get some fantastic character interactions)
I heard somewhere that’s what was the original vision by jj abrams, Finn was supposed to be a rogue jedi who travels the universe saving slaves and stormtroopers who defected from the first order then opened a school for jedi.
@@kingcold1758 It actually didn't go like that, Okiro had another video about the original script for TFA. And in it, it had Finn and Rey find the Skywalker Lightsaber together and confirm that they're both force sensitive. Finn had a MUCH longer fight against the stormtroopers, and we were going to get an explanation from Maz Kanata about where she got the Skywalker lightsaber from, and we were going to Kylo Ren's backstory, the reason why Luke turned his back on everything and a reunion with the original trilogy trio! Maz was going to go to the resistance and her and Leia have a conversation about Finn and they both say that he should keep the Skywalker lightsaber and take it with him to Starkiller base. Also in the script, there was no shields on Starkiller base. So instead of turning those off, in the original script the resistance had a MASSIVE ship called the hammer and they were gonna RAM the planet. This meant that the rescue mission to Starkiller was strictly a rescue mission, no shields, just going to get Rey and get out. Before Finn left, Leia would've given him the Skywalker Sword and told him to use it well before departing. And that's it. Now Okiro did have a video on it, I guess he had to take it down because it's no longer on channel but, most of what I said in my paragraphs on are his other Finn video called Finn the lost protagonist which is here ruclips.net/video/RZCSlkyEE3Q/видео.html
It always baffles me when people say "Finn and Rey never had a romantic connection" and I have to sit there, looking at the force awakens and every bit of evidence that came after like "YEAH?? YOU SURE???"
@@barbarablue2571 Rey and Finn probably had the most meaningful and genuine connection in the entire sequel trilogy. Their arcs are inherently interwined. It's clear that the initial vision for the trilogy was for them to be dual protagonists by learning about the force , facing their demons, and defeating the first/final order together. Reylo was a pathetic excuse for a substitution because Disney was too chicken to portray a meaningful romance (not fetish ) between a black man and a white woman.
There is a reason why Finn & Rey’s relationship was so utterly profound. These two individuals have never truly loved & cared for anyone in their whole lives before finding each other. Whether it be romantic love or not, it doesn’t matter. A relationship of that weight is significant on a soul fulfilling level. The sequels threw that potential away. What a tragic shame.
Bro . You are a simply incredibly insightful. I thought I was imagining this storyline in my head . I can’t believe they destroyed one of the best modern love story because they feared that America “wasn’t ready “ for this .
man i miss rey and finn from TFA so much, they're the big reason TFA is still my favourite star wars movie despite what the sequel trilogy became. hell i even miss TFA kylo when i thought they were gonna do something interesting with his character and explore the nature of his manchild-entitlement and alt-righter-esque evil and anger without falling back onto tired, lazy storylines
Racism is what happened. They couldn't stand to see a black man with a white woman. They scratched the idea. Rey and Finn should have kissed at the end. No, they made Rey kiss the guy who repeatedly tried to capture or kill her every scene. I am a dark skin man myself, and I am mostly attracted caucasian or latina women. I was disgusted when I was saw Kylo and Rey kiss.
They made Rey get with a genocidal fascist, whose first scene is him murdering innocent people especially children, and Rise of Skywalker has him do it again.
ngl everything u just said gets invalidated by your little disclaimer at the end.. racoonteurs opinions on these matters don't exactly count for obvious reasons.. anti-black self hatred &racism go hand in hand
*le sigh*' I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! They are the reason I ended up binging all of Star Wars. They are the reason I became obsessed with it. Their dynamic in TFA was and still is one of the most beautifully written, deep dynamics between two leading characters that I've ever seen. They are two pieces of a puzzle fitting perfectly together, developping together, saving the galaxy against all odds... It was SO BEAUTIFUL. And LFL replaced it with a badly written, ridiculous YA "romance" mixed with some torture and fascism... Replaced Finn with UWU Ben who's only dialogue was "ow". Never will I get over this. But you are right. There IS a way to at least fix these two characters by telling the story I have wanted to be told after the ST under all circumstances: I always loved the idea that the ST is the story of Rey's origins that eventually leads to her CHOICE and the story of Finn's choice that eventually leads to his origins. So that another trilogy afterwards would explore Rey post her choice, accepting who she is and where she belongs and have a Finn that's firmly set in his idenity and his values find out his origins, theraby telling another Galaxy-shattering story. And after watching this video, I STILL want that. They fucked up Rey's origins but they can still tell us Finn's and let his story become whole, while making her character become whole. It is worth it IMHO. Because yes, their dynamic WAS that special and that beautiful. And their story DESERVES to be told.
There are super aggressive racist comments and videos posted just because black people exist in Star Wars. If they got together people would have went ultra crazy with "WOKE" "WOKE""WOKE" while many black men would be angry because Fin isn't mean and cruel enough to the black man getting to "smash" a whyte woman. 😕😕😣😣
@@elephantmanstl I don’t see why even to this day there’s so much stigma revolving around interracial relationships as though a person skin color is the primary determinant of a person’s identity as a human, since we are all one people whose hearts beat as one. Also, I’m guessing those aggressive commenters must really despise the characters of Mace Windu and Lando Calrissian, lol.
@@johnnyd3158 I would be 100% in agreement with you then when you mentioned Lando it stings when the media does enjoy to see interracial relationships. They encourage black men to aim to be hyper promiscuous, boastful, and focus on be ultra cool except to other black people. Those "bad boys" get all the you know what. Fin is the type of guy what even some of those thugs use to rather be. Yet, the mainstream media turned to the racist tactics of porn and rap music. I turned off "Solo" as soon as they introduced Lando especially how Hollywood seems to use the rapper / actor that played Lando.
@@elephantmanstl Well, despite having only gotten into Star Wars around the time of the Force Awakens in 2015, when I think of Lando Calrissian, I think of the OG Lando played by Billy Dee Williams. While Donald Glover who played young Lando in Solo is a good actor, it was Billy Dee Williams who originally brought the character to life about 43 years ago.
im so depressed. i was so ready for all the reylos to cry bc i was so convinved jj abrams would fix the mess rian johnson created but NO we were ROBBED
The only thing I actually liked about The Force Awakens was Finn and Rey together, but their scenes never went anywhere, reduced to Finn being a hapless sidekick and Rey saving everyone. And the ending was awful- they just go their separate ways because Empire Strikes Back.
They had great chemistry. Forget that interracial bias! Those two had some of the best chemistry I've seen on screen as of late. They had some classic funny moments! Both very talented actors that could have been used to a fuller extent in the sequel. They made that movie great in my opinion. I could watch it over and over! Rey and Kylo had no spark goin on whatsoever. They tried to match em up but it made no sense. John Boyega and Daisy Ridley had it goin on,on that big screen!
You never fail to deliver on the hilarious editing that makes your cutting commentary even more delightful; I lost it at Sweet Home Alabama. XDDDDDDDDD
Despite not being a fan of the sequels I was a fan of Finn and Rey's dynamic in TFA. Definitely looked like they were going to be a thing untill TLJ happened. I definitely blamed Disney as a company for the many things wrong with current star wars and many others, and I heard John's statements of how miss handled Finn was. But wow, it was honestly news to me that they specifically did not want a interracial romance in star wars, yet it makes so much sense why they tried to have Rey be with Poe or Kylo. Btw, although I'm not a fan of this pairing, I would like to see your thoughts on Rose and Finn, particularly the scene when Rose "saves" Finn even though Disney lucasfilm clearly didn't want a interracial with Finn and Rey but somehow gave a pass for Finn and Rose.
Not gonna lie I really loved how they played of each other in Episode VII. I think there are many good aspects of Epidode VIII but not having Finn and Rey together was a huge mistake. Edit: Man, this trilogy had so much potential :( TFA was a fine starting point. What a shame
even though i'll always hate that we never got to see the full story originally intended for these two, the vindication that finnrey was always the plan still makes me happy, at least. nothing but respect for *my* sequel trilogy protagonists. "the force awakens *was* finn and rey" /applause. certain people know that this is irrefutable from a narrative standpoint, that's why they "repurpose" so many finnrey moments. i didn't even ship them when i first saw tfa because i figured it was *that* obvious. you don't have to ship something to recognize it exists within the narrative. "come with me/don't go" literally the most romantic moment in the whole of star wars, but what do i know.
Disney straight up constructed a well-balanced and wholesome relationship but fanfic enthusiasts (Not all fanfic writers are bad, that should be obvious) wanted a toxic relationship. Since the market demanded it Disney scraped the chance of having a progressive trilogy that wouldn't have felt forced. If they made a mini-series as a sequel focusing on FinnRey I'd be ecstatic, but there's bad blood between the actors and Disney so we may never get it. So much natural chemistry between the two actors wasted.
The mental gymnastics that a lot of people needed to remain "oblivious" to all of the romantic setup tropes between Finn and Rey in TFA is astounding. All of it is perfectly laid out as you explained perfectly in this video, including the on-point comparisons you made with other onscreen stories. Additionally there is the whole two-strangers-on-the-run-from-a-deadly-antagonist-that-will-spell-certain-doom-for-them-unless-they-team-up plotline. Shared danger between two such individuals has been a staple in stories as the first push towards an eventual romantic pairings more times than there are stars in the galaxy. From romance novels to daytime soap operas to YA fantasies to TV hour dramas to Hollywood cinematic adventures. Audiences have been spoon-fed all of these cues so often that its almost impossible for them to NOT recognize them when they come across them. So as far as I'm concerned when people "failed" to recognize that same blueprint for a burgeoning pairing between Rey and Finn that was a result of willful ignorance, desperate denial or outright lying. It didn’t matter the race of people or their political perspective. Individuals of all sorts were doing everything to dismiss or laugh off the idea of Rey and Finn as a possible couple. The same counters kept being thrown out: -They had a brother-sister chemistry -Rey clearly put Finn in the friendzone -Rey and Finn didn’t have much chemistry at all Obviously since everyone is allowed an opinion one can’t really prove that these were outright lies. But I don’t think it is much of a stretch to be of the belief that most were not exactly telling the truth or at the very least conditioned not to come to a conclusion that Finn and Rey had the right stuff so far as onscreen chemistry with romantic potential. And I come to this conclusion based upon two key extremes that flared up as pushback against “Finnrey”. The first was the naked, vile racist bs that popped up on social media and message boards (partially addressed in this video). There were countless accusations of an agenda being afoot by those uncomfortable with Finn and Rey’s relationship. The anger that was stoked by seeing this white female and black male interact on screen rubbed a bunch of people in such the wrong way that you knew it could only be because they saw all the hallmarks of a budding romance. If there was no spark whatsoever between the two there would have been no need for such nasty tweets and remarks. The other extreme, a position taken up by people who tended to be on the opposite end of those with the prejudicial remarks, were those who took the three minutes of screentime between Finn and Poe and tried to make that as the REAL romance that Finn was headed towards. Look, that may have been understandable to an extent by LGBTQ individuals starving for representation of their own. But the more typical SW fans who decided (pretended) that Finnpoe/Stormpilot was endgame were laughable. These fans, some of them hardcore enthusiasts, some who wrote blogs or hosted podcasts, some who were mere reliable consumers who knew everything about the franchise, pretty much never gave serious consideration to gay relationships or pushed for such relationships during all the years prior. Yet suddenly they were pushing the idea that Finnpoe was very plausible. For them that may have been far more easy to digest than Finn having romantic feelings for Rey which she would reciprocate. Point is people with common sense should know that there was no way Disney was going to put out a new SW trilogy with two-thirds of the main protagonists being homosexual, and yet people would entertain this Finnpoe theory all throughout the SW fanbase, mostly, and this is key, at the expense of Finnrey. Its telling that even homophobes or people who think presenting them on screen is some sort of liberal plot, were apparently more comfortable with Finn and Poe as a pair than Finn and Rey. And in America at least that goes back to the country’s past of such pairings being feared, which led to paranoia which led to all sorts of miscegenation laws and violence. All that history is seeped in Hollywood’s DNA and it shows in that such pairings in major motion pictures are still more rare. And to be fair that rarity may cause viewers to not trust what they are seeing. If this type of hookup between a black male and a white female is so uncommon in your blockbuster Hollywood motion pictures, perhaps it should not be a surprise if there is an automatic disconnect in one’s brain when such a potential of that type of relationship is playing out in front of you on the screen. Your brain simply refuses to believe. Maybe that is what happened to Rian Johnson and others who had to scramble and form a belief that of the possible eligible suitors for Rey, the white Kylo Ren was the obvious choice despite his being an abusive, whining, mind-raping mass murderer who slaughtered his iconic and beloved father on screen.
They did this with the Pelican Brief too (Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts). It's apparent that no matter how 'liberal' or 'progressive' Hollywood or Disney purport themselves to be, it's all about box office earnings in the end and what gets butts on seats or online subscriptions. Disney is the biggest people pleasing studio out there. I miss real and gritty cinema of the 60s and 70s where you had black leads in socially defining genre films such as Night of the Living Dead, In the Heat of the Night, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner with no form of social pandering or virtue signaling. Those movies just told their story for what it is while making us think of the times and norms they were based on. Movie makers need to realize this again instead of catering to a set formula of how tentpole franchises work. We all very well know how the house of mouse has treated it's directors who strayed from their norms of story telling (Lord and Miller, Colin Trevorrow, fuck the GOT makers for they suck by default, Rian Johnson I'll give a pass for he's the only one who gave something completely different in the trilogy and his movies are good--Looper, Brick, and Knives Out--good stories!!)
I disagree about that last part of your assessment.. Rian has plainly &openly stated that he thinks of kylo as the hero &even intended reylo as the pivotal romance when he watched awakens.. he is a funny one though &I have neither the comment space nor time to go into what I really think of that man &his twisted motives
@@o-wolf So I gave that dude too much credit. If he actually admitted this to the public at large, then he is either clueless and can't see the prejudice in such a viewpoint or he is oblivious but has been spared any backlash because Hollywood has his back on that specific subject.
Honestly once you write this much on the topic you may as well narrate your own vid. Like seriously, do it, trust me you'll feel rewarded regardless of views
Finn and rey are endgame for sure, but it would have been so much more impactful if Disney hadn't chickened out after TFA and let their romance happen in the trilogy itself. I was still holding out hope it would happen after TLJ and it was super frustrating talking to people who didn't see the romantic chemistry between them. Like, did we watch the same movie? Thank you for making this video! It really brought me back to the days when I was running my finnrey blog on tumblr and was still hopeful for the future of the sequel trilogy.
I’m glad someone finally made a video about this, I’ve thought for years I was insane for thinking that Rey and Finn were always supposed to be a pair of lead co stars and possibly a romance, mostly because everyone was trying to act like they weren’t. Like actively being against their romance for some reason.
The issue is, the main conflict and narrative driver in Star Wars are the relationships. Anakins relationship with Padme is what brought on the rise of the empire. Luke’s relationship with his father is what brought down the empire. It only made sense that to bring down the first order, Kylo would have to have a connection with someone to accomplish that. And unfortunately, Finn and Rey’s chemistry was merely subjective in the end.
Don't tell SWP. We'd never hear the end of how Fin wasn't a real "street dude" "dat been up'n a buncha b**ches". Then we'd hear how Fin "did'n deserve no whyte b**ches."
Boyega is a fine actor. He ought to sue Disney for making him a joke and destroying his career. Obviously, Disney is more racist than has been known! Why didn't they make Finn the kick-butt Jedi instead of Rey? They will make the black guy the stormtrooper but the main Jedi guy? Hell no! They gave that role to the white chick!
I was so excited about the Force Awakens. It's my favorite Star Wars film. I especially loved Finn, and Rey as well, and I loved their chemistry. Their character development together was amazing. The movie was exciting and emotional. I'm depressed about Disney's racist choices ruining the potential for the rest of the trilogy. Finn's character-- a Stormtrooper that defected and found the Rebellion-- that's so bad ass. He deserves so much more.
At the end Rey fell in love with the man she witnessed kill his father. When you go back to this trilogy, its very sloppy. All that money thrown at it and it couldn't save a bad script. Too many cooks in the kitchen and they all deserve blame.
The more of your work I see, the more motivated I am to take an ill-advised first swing at a Finn/Rey fanfiction. I'm talking grand adventures, soppy romances, slice of life stuff; the whole nine yards. I can see how they'd work and it's pretty great. You're inspiring me, but my writing skills probably don't stack up to the quality I would want them to be at to do the content justice.
As the son of a White Mother and Black Father, as a boy who grew up watching the Prequels and loving them, its painful This all can be summed up with the fact that Disney either doesn't have the Balls to potray an Interracial Relationship in a Major Blockbuster despite being the most Powerful Movie Studio in the World,or is willingly not committing to having this on screen in a Massive Film Franchise. Greed,Racism,Politics, call it whatever you want. But this is a mark on Star Wars Legacy that i can't forgive and is honestly worse than anything George Lucas was perceived to have done with a Story he created with his own hands. Jar Jar Binks was a funny side character meant for Kids, Finn was the 3rd star of the New Trio of heroes for a New Generation of Star Wars fans to grow up with, and he was downgraded and every ounce of importance was absolutely erased by the end of the trilogy, relegating a truly original concept into just being THE FUNNY BLACK GUY.
I would love to see more about Finn and Rey together. They were great together in The Force Awakens. I always felt they should end up together. That plus not getting Han, Leia and Luke all together at least once were huge mis-steps in my opinion. 🤷🏼♂️✌🏻
Could you do an Anime or Avatar video?
28:49 Thank you for giving us Finn with a green lightsaber!! He looks amazing in that shot!!😍🥰💚💚💚
Have you ever thought of making a Finncentic fan trailer for each movie?
You're speaking the truth, Doom Victor.

Yeah I had the same feeling :(
Same man....

This is the first time I've heard that comparison.
That’s what’s so weird too. How she didn’t have a double saber
Man I miss the TFA era - FReY was such a good time 😭
@@Wackaz Agreed. It was an era before the dark times.
But we got Reylo, and Palpatine. . . yippee.
I have no idea if "Kyle Ron" is intentional or a typo but it got a laugh out of me; that's how I'm going to refer to him going forward.

Just to avoid a black man and white woman, but let that be the reverse and it would be no problem.

omg - John has so much charisma its INSANE bro
You should play Star Wars Battlefront 2. Finn is actually voiced by John and his lines are my favorite in the game.
Poe: “And you-”
Finn: “Will walk out of her life forever. Jedi don’t have attachments, especially with a stormtrooper like me.”
Followed by the new Jedi philosophy where attachments ARE allowed because emotional repression is how you get Vader’s and Kylo’s.

And I actually appreciate the ST more now.
And then! We’re just going to make this Kylo’s story and how her love redeems him. What the actual f!ck. 😂😂😂
Stop making me sad 😭

Rey MIND TRICKED Finn. It was during the passana dessert scene where she sensed Kylo and when she told him to go and that it would be alright, she used the force to mind trick him into following Poe into Ochi's ship. Like between that and her constantly running away from Finn and Poe towards Kylo Ren the whole movie, I much prefer TFA at this point. Because TROS Rey just treats Finn and everyone like garbage.

I mean it is a Disney movie 🤷🏾♂️. What u expect?
The Paramount Sonic movie had the human lead white guy have a Black wife and literally nobody cared or mentioned it. All their energy was spent on Uncanny Valley Human Teeth Rabid Possum looking Sanic. No typo.
Can we get some of that energy for Disney or... nah.
@@viscountrainbows6452 white guy with blk wife....wonder what that harps back too 🤔
????? You can find a ton of that in real life.
Finn’s proposal is sweet, Kylo’s is just straight up abuse
Sadly the Reylo fans won't see it as that.
@andrewmichael9201
Has Twilight taught you nothing? Some women like a bad boy.
@@DemonicRemptionEdward was no where near as abusive as Kylo
Twilight is a case study in gothic stories and byronic characters.
I just hope they come back as their characters in SW but they fix alot of that crap story.
Seeing Rey kiss Ben, I lowkey yelled "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME, SCREW STAR WARS!"
Unlike Ultron in the second Avengers movie Ben kissing Rey made me physically throw up in my mouth.🙄😆👍🏾
Every time you play more scenes from the Finn/Rose Last Jedi side plot the more I hate humanity
Keep calling out Disney's story killing bs! Props for standing up for good writing and good characters!
I'd rather Rey stay dead than kiss Kylo.
Right? It should have been Finn she was kissing tbh. But honestly anything would have been better than kissing Kylo.
@@jacquelyynorgana77 yeah not gonna lie 😂
Me too.. I think that's how just about everyone who saw that trash felt 😆 could never get those minutes back.
Much as I hate the sentiment behind this it makes me retch to this day if I see it anywhere.. like take Finn out of the equation &it still just feels SO WRONG &FORCED like I had to ask myself what in the fanfiction Frick am I watching?
Yes.
They should’ve ended up together. They should’ve both been trained as jedis and fallen in love along the way.
Yeah after the terrible bomb the sequel Trilogy has been let's turn Finn&Rey into a comedy special.
@@roycewallace9472
I’ll take anything over what we’ve got now. As long as that comedy special is well written, I’m ready to write off the rest.
Yes, is surew. The only romantic connection for her has a name, Ben Solo.
@@STARK0181FACTS 💯
The hand thing Rey and Finn had warms my heart.
Never noticed how many times Rey called Finns name
This video makes me wanna cry, Finn and Rey had such a wonderful relationship in TFA, and then the rest of the trilogy happened
Finn and Rey are the definition of what true love is all about, 🥰.
While Donald Glover who played young Lando in Solo is a good actor, it was Billy Dee Williams who originally brought the character to life about 43 years ago.
i just can't believe they did it because they are racist. It's so dumb, lazy and pathetic that i just can't think it's real.
im so depressed. i was so ready for all the reylos to cry bc i was so convinved jj abrams would fix the mess rian johnson created but NO we were ROBBED
I love THE FORCE AWAKENS. Everything falled apart after that movie.
XDDDDDDDDD
honestly when I watch the squeal trilogy my main thought is
Damn I wish all of these actors were in a better movie together
The same counters kept being thrown out:
-They had a brother-sister chemistry
-Rey clearly put Finn in the friendzone
-Rey and Finn didn’t have much chemistry at all
Obviously since everyone is allowed an opinion one can’t really prove that these were outright lies.
You're right.
I really enjoyed tfa bc of finrey, i never watched the other sequels. Dimitri and Ryder are amazing characters. Love this parallel.
Exactly :,)
Finn wanted to tell Rey that these sequel movies are crap. Rey wanted to tell Finn the same thing.
I wish Rey & Finn ended up together.
Yup. They set up Finn for Rey and then Ruin took a shit on it. I'm no pro-Jar Jar guy but WTF?
RACISM DESTROYED THIS SERIES😡

I care a lot about Finn and Rey too
They’re the best
As the son of a White Mother and Black Father,
as a boy who grew up watching the Prequels and loving them,
its painful This all can be summed up with the fact that Disney either doesn't have the Balls to potray an Interracial Relationship in a Major Blockbuster despite being the most Powerful Movie Studio in the World,or is willingly not committing to having this on screen in a Massive Film Franchise.
Greed,Racism,Politics, call it whatever you want.
But this is a mark on Star Wars Legacy that i can't forgive and is honestly worse than anything George Lucas was perceived to have done with a Story he created with his own hands.
Jar Jar Binks was a funny side character meant for Kids,
Finn was the 3rd star of the New Trio of heroes for a New Generation of Star Wars fans to grow up with, and he was downgraded and every ounce of importance was absolutely erased by the end of the trilogy, relegating a truly original concept into just being THE FUNNY BLACK GUY.
It might have to do with them pandering to China.
I would love to see more about Finn and Rey together. They were great together in The Force Awakens. I always felt they should end up together. That plus not getting Han, Leia and Luke all together at least once were huge mis-steps in my opinion. 🤷🏼♂️✌🏻
