Thank you Angela. I been waiting a long time for you to do this song. I thought you would do the studio version it's a lot hotter shall we say but I'm glad you've done the song period! I think it showed something different from Donna than your used to. But that was one of the great things about Donna. She was so many different things and would surprise you every time. So versatile . A diva without trying in only all the best ways. The one true Queen.

Well good choice Angela. If you had listen to the original 3:24 track you would have been blushing. It is far more salacious than this performance. It was banned by the BBC and other conservative countries in Europe. In the US Rev Jesse Jackson and PUSH campaigned against the song. When she signed with Casablanca Records in the US, Neil Bogart president of the record company requested a longer version. It covered the entire first side of the album, 16:50. Donna was pushed into the boudoir if you will, by Casablanca, for her first 3 albums. Still there is some great ground breaking music. I believe the original recording of LTLYB has been put in the Library of Congress and it also appears on Rolling Stones original watershed moments list.

Be sure to go take listen to the studio track of this and imagine it popping up on your favorite radio station (or at a Disco) in the 70s. It's why she's the queen and, of course, there is also I Feel Love which turned dance music production on its head and started the huge move toward 'electronic music' that would be a big part of the 80s.

Loving the old school throwback intro!! Had it on record - And So ready for this, hope you are- 😬 Edit: This live of her doing this song is good- in my opinion she has a much better one- Can’t think of where it was though- anybody know the one I mean? It’s slowed down more and even more provocative- 💖👍✌️

  • @MongooseTales

This was probably the most overtly erotic pop song of the 1970s. As others commenters have said, the studio version is even hotter, although it lacks the wonderful flute solo you enjoyed so much. Another song in a similar vein but not quite as breathy is Diana Ross's "Love Hangover", which I strongly recommend you check out in one of your future Ladies Night videos. I like the studio version but you may be more entertained by the longer "Live on The Midnight Special 1976" version. It lacks half-clothed male dancers but includes Diana doing The Bump (a popular 1970s dance move -- look it up) with fans at the 4:30 and 6:10 marks.

This is a good example of why studio versions are best for first listens . the artist released the version they wanted the public to hear . even though this version is ok , just listen to the studio and you'll see(hear) the difference . didn't mean to get negative ...

This was her first US hit, from 1975, but she had a couple of hits in Europe before that, both in 1974, "The Hostage" and "Lady of the Night." And that outfit she had on looked kind of like seventies Mary McFadden, but I'm not sure. In the seventies, McFadden used to do clothes based on ancient cultures like Egypt, Mesopotamia, Byzantium, etc.

Please react to State of Independence by Donna Summer. Another one of her best songs. Not to mention the all star chorus that includes big names like Michael Jackson, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, James Ingram, Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones and a few other people. It also Included one of her sisters. That song was actually Quincy Jones’ first attempt at an all star chorus and 1/3 of We Are The World is on that song.

This Performance doesn't do this song justice... You have to listen to the Album Long Playing Versions to really get the Moaning that she is doing in this Song... When this song came out, kids had to leave the room before they would play it... LOL
The back story is that she was alone in the Studio during the recording, sitting in the dark and just letting her own imagination take over.... But I know there are a lot of children behind this song... LMBO

She also hated singing this song. It was actually written for another performer, who at the time was also a very popular disco diva.
She cut a demo for the record manager who intern mastered it and included it in Donna's new album at the time that was to be released - her manager didn't even tell her what he had done.
She also said the song doesn't reflect who she is as a person and as a performer.

Sorry but if you really like Donna's music then this was a really BAD place to start your "Female Friday" reactions.
This is about as far away from the original recording that you could get and still call it the same song, and in comparison it couldn't be worse. The whole point about the song is that it was sensual through and through. It was atmospheric, slow paced, with a great arrangement and slow mood enhancing builds and fades, and with sexy vocals that didn't feel out of place. When you put all of that together it was a masterpiece for its time. This version is NONE of that. I would recommend you go and listen to the full-length (17 minute) version to get the points I'm making).

  • @dennis2966

This is my least favorite song of hers. It doesn't really show off her incredible vocal talents and skills.
