I remember visiting my brother in East Berlin. Many of the East Germans wanted the wall back up. They didnt have to work as hard. It was their right to work but most places didnt have enough supplies to work all week so after cleaning up they would play games or knit and get paid for it until it was time to go home. Lol.

He gave us critical help when we made cannabis legal. He has started to explore Eastern Europe, but won't be writing or talking about it for a few more years.

Rick, that "young American soldier" depicted on the large photograph at Checkpoint Charlie is Sergeant Jeff Harper, a tubist with the 298th Army Band. Jeff went on to complete a full career in the Army and served in the Gulf War and in later deployments to Afghanistan.
The 298th Army Band was sent to Berlin to support the Potsdam Conference and arrived in Berlin on 8 July 1945 and remained until its deactivation in September 1994.

When we shopped in East Berlin when the wall was up it was so different. The stores were not stocked well. The clerks were rude because us tourists were spending more money than they made in a year. The Stazi followed us around saying it was for our safety. Nobody jay walked except tourists. I loved the ampelman on the walking lights. I remember we went to the bathroom and left money for the bathroom cleaner. She almost cried because we left enough for her to buy her family presents and it was only a few dollars. We tried to leave more but Major Grieshabor pushed us out the door before we offended the lady. So many memories.

I spent a bit more than two years in Berlin back in the period '70-'72 with the US Army. I worked out in Rudow and in Marienfelde, and did some time at Tempelhof Airport, and up on Teufelsberg. My barracks is now the location of the Central German Archives on Finckenstein Allee. I've never been back, since most of the places I worked are gone or closed off. My time in Berlin was interesting, and I enjoyed it.

When I visited Berlin I thought it to be excellent. A city that rises from the ashes, like Berlin did, has got my respect. One thing I like about the German mentality is the ability to make an epic project a success! Like the HauptBahnHof , the reunification of east and west, the autobahn etc. I sincerely hope for the future that war will never come to this capitol again.

We never stopped doing these things. Not everyone bought into the media and government narrative. How ironic it is learning about the communist and fascist history of a city, and then seeing people behave like they did beginning in 2020... and not seeing the connection. The attempt to separate people, muzzle them, silence their individual thoughts and opinions, pitting people against each other and proclaiming an atmosphere of constant fear... and ostracizing portions of the population that didn't go along...that's how tyranny works.

This city indeed has so much potential whilst having such a relaxed atmosphere. Transportation is simply great. Visited the city multiple times in the past, but this year for the first time as an adult. Since I wanted to see some non-standard things, I will try to post some slightly more original activities we undertook:
    * Take the elevator to the top of the Fernsehturm (TV tower). Tickets have to be bought; keep in mind that it can take 1 to 2 hours before you can ascend after purchasing the tickets. So you might want to consider buying the tickets beforehand, or to have a coffee nearby. :) Views over Berlin are pretty neat. If you look closely, you can distinguish the architecture of East and West from above.
    * Stroll over the runway of the (nowadays closed) airport Berlin-Tempelhof. This airport is not located in downtown Berlin, but perfectly accessable via subway. Consider barbecuing alongside the taxiways on a lazy sunday afternoon. You want to experience this relaxed atmosphere and be part of it.
    * I guess you will have to arrange private transportation for this, and it might take some additional time, but you might want to visit the Sachsenhausen concentration camp not far from the city. It might take some courage to visit, but may we never forget what has happened.

Rick Steves makes it look like he is having the best of fun; however, I am sure that there is a lot of work behind these films and he probably is wishing the filming was over, so he can go to the hotel and go to bed. THAT is the BEST of Europe!

I went to Berlin in 2015, and my hostel was in Prenzlauer Berg.
It's a really fun city with a very bohemian vibe, it kinda reminded me of the East Village neighborhood of NYC.

I must live here - Ich muss im Berlin leben.
I just have to, Berlin is my favorite place on this planet - if Berlin can still be here after all it's gone through then so must I, even if I can't see the point now - I hope I can make it happen before life beats me to the point of living

Rick, I love your books and especially your tv series and I have watched for several years. I speak 8 European languages and I'd love to work for you! Besides this, please make videos on the following: another video just on Finland, Lapland and the Saame (or Sami) people, the European side of Russia, Cyprus, Iceland, Faroe Islands, another on Poland, Ukraine, Malta, one on Sweden outside of Stockholm, Slovakia, Greenland, Moldova (and other tiny Balkan countries you haven't done yet), Macedonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Isle of Man and Jersey. Please press the like button if you agree.

I have been to East and West Berlin. It was so different. We even shopped in East Berlin before the wall came down and the Stasi followed us around. Got my passport stamped at Checkpoint Charlie. Saw the erternal flame and drove by Hitlers bunker an was on the Eastern side of the Brandenburg gate. Went to the old train station which had a flea market in it. My brother moved to East Germany after the wall came down. He could tell some stories. Lol

Rick Steves, You done a beautiful job of showing the highlights of Berlin,i lived there for 10 years and enjoyed the time i was there, and lived in a glass building in Sony Center, and enjoyed traveling with their transportation.
I also grew up in Bronx NY, as you can see the contrast, now living down in Florida, and believe it i await my next big move, with much higher hopes in my life and a very, very special DREAM, to come to be in my life.
