Now this is a truly original, completely mesmerizing interpretation of the Ballade in F minor. In just over 11 minutes, he told the story of a lifetime. I'm especially impressed with the melodic secrets he revealed within this piece. I loved it. Bravo, Eric Lu!
I find Lu's interpretation of this composition totally satisfying. I have heard this music a hundred times interpreted by the most famous pianists, and there is nothing missing here. Perfect expression, perfect technique, perfect respect for Chopin and no attempt to mix Eric Lu into that part of the work of art that belongs to the composer.
I've listened to Zimmerman's Ballad No. 4 over 1,000 times. I'm sure this person practiced listening to Zimmerman's ballad number 4. Tempo and beat are almost in line.
+Pedagozi Nis - I know he plays the piano very well, and he doesn't make a bad sound. But I just did not fall in love. I don't like his idea of the phrasing, and there was hardly any "lilt" to speak of. Even though I think Chopin doesn't need much rubato, this was much too straight for my taste.
laguna, you wrote quite an understatement. You will surely have other chances to fall in love... You can always add a rubato in your head, but it's difficult to take an undesired one out. Better straight than schmaltz.
A perfect interpretation of this beautiful Ballade of Chopin, absolutely marvelous! It's remarkable the way he plays, clearly feeling each single note of the piece. Congratulations, Eric, you have indeed a great talent.
What a pleasure to watch and listen to Eric Lu. There's a serenity, a unity, and transcendence with the music taking place that makes his performance a spiritual experience. Thank you for sharing your heart through music with us.
It would be doing Mr. Lu a disservice to say that he plays the piano. Rather, he seems to get inside the notes on the page and animate them with his own sensitive spirit. It is hard to imagine him getting any better than he is now, but of course he will. Bravo, Eric.
Mr. Eric Lu is a true genius! I really love his performance. His playing always makes me believe that he has warm yet strong respect for composer. No aspect of annoyment is added, he carries a pure beauty of Chopin's music. Especially this ballad is like telling a story of life, so magnificent. Bravo!
The quality and clarity of sound he produces is phenomenal!! On top of that he adds his soul and artistry, perfect combination for Chopin's music. I'd be immensely surprised if he doesn't make top three. Bravo, Eric!
Outstanding interpretation. Intuitive interplay of themes, connecting, and overlapping motifs, as the mind does when remembering. Lu shares an excerpt of life...very personally. We hear the meaning of ballade. Wonderfully played.
An absolutely stunning performance. The emotional integrity toward the end really makes or breaks the piece for me, and he played it so elegantly and cleanly.
Wonderful playing; It's pure magic the way he takes us on an initially calm but later tumultuous journey followed by the inevitable plunge into the abyss, (musically speaking).
YES! Beautiful! Captures and eloquent expresses the elegiac, meditative, phantasmagorical quotes in this deeply serious work, and also demonstrates a supreme virtuosic command of the work's considerable technical demands.
Very close -- but I think Eric Lu played it better ever so slightly. He just has less inaccuracies and more of a sense of flow. Again, VERY close. Both are excellent pianists from Curtis and I have no objection to people who think the other way around because both are just wonderful and it could just come down to a matter of taste.
IT IS JUST AMAZING THAT ALL HE NEEDS TO REACH MUSICAL PERFECTION IS HIS PASSION FOR WHAT HE'S PLAYING THAT HE DON'T EVEN NEED TO LOOK AT THE PIANO KEYS... HE MIGHT AS WELL BE BLIND AND NOT GIVE A CARE IN THE WORLD.... WOW...
@@javierguerrero306 I agree, like this video was not posted asking for feedback like honestly who asked? Like why doesn't he go into the competition and play it better than...
Eric entered the e-competition 2 years earlier which is when I discovered his amazing playing of this piece..His phrasing is highly reminiscent of the 1946 recording of the piece by the great Solomon.
A young A. Rubinstein. Fantastic, light, incredible interpretation. I listened to his playing of 'Andante spianato et grande polonaise brillant.' It sent me into a heavenly world. Lovely!
I feel as though most parts of this interpretation were slightly too loud, giving a more agitated feel throughout the whole piece, when it rather should take a more introspective feel with only subtle hints of agitation throughout, as it is in Zimmerman's interpretation. Still a masterful musician nonetheless, and very deserving of the high rank he received in the competition.
The guys good, I mean he bears comparison to Rubenstein or pollini. Not quite as willful as R and not quite as dogmatic as P,He uses rubato but at select points for that extra expression.
Well, the space between notes is always the same on the piano so when we practice we kinda get a muscular memory with witch we know the exact position of every note without having to think about it or even look to the keyboard:)
pianists that have years of practice would definitly remember the place of each keys, u just need alot of practice. Plus, pianists would want focus more on the emotions, so its better to not look at the keyboard
this ballade is probably my most favorite piece of music from any composer, and to hear it played like this is just breathtaking.

7 years later and this is still the best interpretation of this piece I've ever heard. Very little I would do differently.

Amazing pianist! He has fantastic control of instrument. Beautifull touch! Poet of piano! His technique is in a service of music!

he is a winner in my mind. maybe he donot care about winning the competition. music. beauty and chopin. that's all

Eric really deserved at least second prize... what a shame.
@@Algorox i totally agree. He should have been. No matter bc he has 4 albums out and that's way more than 3rd place winner.

I was breathless, it's fantastic !
Superlative in every aspect !
+Wydia Chandra Both technically and musically, this is one of the best Ballade in F minor I've heard in any competition.
An absolutely stunning performance. The emotional integrity toward the end really makes or breaks the piece for me, and he played it so elegantly and cleanly.
Very, very nice. Easy and fluid technique. I look forward to hearing him as he reaches full maturity.

Wonderful- I will look forward to your prospective performances Mr Lu.
Very beautiful and my favorite piece. I think that Chopin would have liked his interpretation.
his heart and soul in his fingers..amazing..
9:03 now THAT is how you shape a phrase
So satisfying
Incredible. Who could ask for anything more? Bravo, Mr. Lu.
Wow, fantastic. I hope this guy wins!

and his sense of "improvisation" is also rather remarkable too
Great artwork, such a masterpiece.
9:57 those chords were majestic!
The piano is invisible when Eric plays. He can literally play air piano and it will sound beautiful.
Goosebumps. So fantastic!!
What a ravishing, knowing, *profound* pianist!
このピアノの弾き方、とても気に入っています。
変なアレンジがなくてよいですね。
If there is a Chopin Ballade #4 competition, he probably will win 1st place.
nah kate liu played as well as he did

think about that, Chopin wrote Piano concerto in E minor at 20 and Ballade in G minor when he was only 21
some thing else
nothing?
youre listening to good music
This is the very very good performance.. !
Great ! The front part I prefer Kate Liu, but the ending I feel Eric Lu played it really excellent
Saw him live not too long ago. He's such a great musician

Beautiful!!! One of my favorite Chopin pieces!! This exact recording is on Spotify, had to find it!

What extraordinarily long fingers he has; a tremendous advantage I think.

a totally moving performance, his musicianship is far beyond technique

bravo !!!!
Bravo!
the very first thumb G should've not be recorded.
My guess is that he tried playing the octave but the top note didn't sound, so he had to play it again.
One atrocious mistake in the end, other than that its such a good performance
Anyone think brahms intermezzos are somewhat inspired by this, especially the beginning parts

I prefer Kate Liu's Ballade 4, but this guy is a pro. He'll go far because of his superb musicianship!
ok just your taste. by the way; - how many years are you listtening this ballade 4 ?
