Simply beautiful. An exquisite rendition of the 4th ballad. Full of emotion, not slow and not rushed, the voices can be heard so clearly. I haven't heard many interpretations of this piece, but I think I need not look any further.
I love it that she doesn't play at lightning fast speed. She plays at a perfect pace, without too much pedal, and I can hear each note played perfectly. The last part was amazing, perfect. Most performers just play the last part with too much pedal and so fast, that it just becomes a big mess, but this was just beautiful!
Through her performance, I can see and feel a pianist experiencing and expressing the joy, ecstasy, sadness, sorrow, anger and anguish coded into Chopin's notes as emotional and imperfect human-beings instead of robots showing off perfect execution! That's the top level of performance for me!
I wholeheartedly agree! Yulianna is endowed with more talents than strictly pianistic. Her rich personality is multi-dimentional: spiritual, intellectual, deeply emotional, thoroughly sensitive, insightful, high above "normal". Moreover, She is modest and totally engrossed in music.
I once played the piano and have been consciously listening to music for 60 years. Yulianna is beyond criticism or category. Pure art and pure passion both delicate and and powerful. The world ignored Van Gogh. I hope they do not ignore Yulianna. Thanks to her for the beauty and truth.
YES, we need her to be highlighting orchestra seasons around the globe. I don't understand the current obsession with the flashy performers like Trifonov and Wang.
Yulianna is the only pianist that I will listen to play this ballade. Her interpretation is full of energy, power, and sadness. She brings this intensity I haven't really seen in other pianists while still remaining gentle & emotional at the same time. Probably listened to this performance 100 times, she deserved to win.
For several years, I did not understand why she won the competition. And for several years, I thought that I knew this ballade and that I was tired of listening to it. But hearing this performance has been and still is mind blowing. This is almost a complete different work from what I knew, this is Chopin like I have never heard it before. I am really happy that she won, she manages to display musical qualities in a unique kind, even among the best Chopin performers.
For me, it's the articulation she brings. She has a sparkle to her notes that other pianists don't have. It's so very much her sound that you can recognize from a mile away. She also plays it slower than just about everyone else, letting you really hear how dense this Ballade is, where many pianists try to hide the density. She's enormously technically skilled, but she doesn't make that the focus of her performance. Whether you like or dislike some of her interpretative choices, you have to love that she's bringing her own thing into it, and it could only be Yulianna. She's my favorite pianist around because she always makes you hear something different in a work, and she's got such a recognizable sound.
This piece reveals a universe of musical expression in just over ten minutes. For me, the most beautiful pieces in the piano repertoire. After closing your eyes, this Ballade will take you on a journey to a paradise with birds, sparkling water, the scent of the flowers and your thoughts on your loved one. This is how I experience this Ballad. Chopin, how blessed we are that you have lived on this earth..! Bilal Atabey
The very best interpretation of this piece. Next to her autstanding performance may have the Yamaha CFX as their new flagship played a very significant role for this master piece! Thank you! :)
I keep coming back to this version. So beautiful. Especially the contemplative nature of her playing and the differences of the less played Ekier edition.
For starters, there are tied notes that have become traditional in the 2nd theme that Ekier disposes of. I like it! Ingrid Fliter version also uses this edition.
Wow! True perfection! Her polyphonic and rhythmic rendering are both perfect... She has a superior vision of music, which derives from a superior cultural vision. She is not a mechanical machine like many pianists today, but a heart that plays with a superfine technique and a profound knowledge. Brava!
Listening closely to the performance, I am astound. Her playing is so graceful, somewhat delicate and, strangely, thoughtful. It's as if she is thinking through the piano in this piece. Beautiful. Brilliant.
Delightful! I am sure Chopin would enjoy her playing! I am listening to this interpretation of the ballade over and over again and I find it just so lovely!
Madame, quel bonheur de vous entendre . J.etais a' Varsovie en 2010 et je n'ai pas oublie vos prestations tout au long du concours . Merci pour Chopin .
It breaks interpretive paradigms of Chopin's work. Sometimes it decontextualizes, other times it plunges into an absurd intimacy with the author, other times it brings certain passages to the contemporary. The result of this is something completely new and surprising resulting from alternating perceptions that we have recorded about the work.
She played so well. Her beautiful sound matched the song so well. Her musicality is one of the best in the world. And the last Koda performance was really great. That was the best Koda I've ever heard.
Yes, totally agree! She has the "old style" perfectly defined. So much style and understanding of the PHYSICALITY of the piano. Always a pleasure to see and hear her performances.
well, I mean, she made mistake in some key parts that completely change the tone of the piece. If there's ever a reason to lose a competition, it's mistakes that completely change the tone of a piece.
Love this girl and love Chopin. Tried to learn the peace.... very difficult but I could play it at a slower pace. Spent hours learning it.... and loved the experience. Very talented Yulianna Avdeeva!!! U should have 1 billion followers.
Ladies and Gents, just a quick reminder for when you compare different recordings: some audios are MORE COMPRESSED than others. This means they will have a slightly brighter tone, a bit more pressure, a different color that might strike as being the result of the interpreter's technique and sound alone. Needless to say that each performer has his/her own sound, but when it comes down to youtube recordings the level of compression vary A LOT. BTW, her interpretation of this piece is simply amazing. Certainly one of the highlights of the competition.
Bravissima Yulianna, intensa e commovente, bellissima magia, sei stata eccezionale. Grazie. Continuo a riascoltarti e ad emozionarmi. A dir la verità ne ho sentite suonate da molti ma la tua resta quella che mi convince e commuove di più. GRAZIE
She is a fantastic artist, singing each note and each frase by heart and with the most intense and inspired expression that only very few artist can do. Love your playing Yulianna! ❤
For people listening to Chopin 200 years ago it was hardcore. Many parts of this ballad sound like jazz interpretations. Chopin was lucky to be ahead of his time by at least 100 years and in some wonderful way he was understood and admired.
Yulianna's performances are not 'interpretations' - they are creations and discoveries! There is tremendous spiritual, emotional and physical power in them.
A very beautiful master piece from master Chopin. I very much like the clarity of her playing, the silence underlying all movement. I would not call it sadness, but an expression of melancholy, of "heimweh", the voice of a transcendental value.
I love this performance. Most other times I've watched/listened to this ballade, it seems like the best parts of the song are rushed through or there is not enough clarity. But here you can hear it all
There is just so much satisfying space in the music amidst all of the technicians out there who have to play everything fast and condensed as if on a mission to impress. I have to imagine that Chopin played it this way...

This is just the best performance of this piece ever recorded. I sincerely think that she is one of the few pianists that Chopin would agree to.
Most exaggerate the rubato or simply don’t understand it. But this…this is perfect.
I think this is the performance that won her the competition title. Stunning and otherworldly.

@@milton3204 Not really. Lots of Asian players have the correct vision (Yundi, Uchida) whereas lots of Russians don't (Trifonov, Matsuev)
