Beating the Perfect Portal 2 Speedrun - World Record History of Neurotoxin Sabotage

- Perfection is not a word you see a lot in speedrunning, but for some reason, the Neurotoxin Sabotage level in Portal 2 has seen the word "perfect" a ton throughout it's history. How have speedrunners managed to beat these so-called "perfect" world record times?

Also because it's hard to give route credit while narrating a storyline. Shoutouts to PerOculos/Szeimartin who are credited for finding the shot through the door, and Krzyhau/Nidboj/Warrior_Gamer/Wizard889/PerOculos/Tanger2b who are all credited for finding implosion skip.
Thanks to baister09 and zach for helping with the video creation process.
This video is not an actual speedrun world record, nor a speedrun tutorial. This video is a showcase of a speedrun strategy that goes in-depth to the various tricks, glitches and bugs that make the strategy possible. - Игры
"He just has good gaming chair" has gained a new meaning.
@DarkCoreX but it's so overused
@@BackwardVR Except it's not at all used in the overused meaning here
I just got through a goku vs saitama argument and this is the kind of comment I needed lmao
indeed a really good gaming chair
@@BackwardVR In this case, it's not overused at all - It's actually quite remarkable.
Who would win:
-a world record thought to be unbeatable because of cycles
-chair
"Well, that obviously will be me, so who will lose first? You or the idiots running that maze like their lives depend on it?" - The Riddler, Batman Arkham City
you’re welcome btw
cycles vs chair; who wins
I dont know what it is, but every time a bus is mentioned to explain cycles/framerules, i openly laugh. Its not even that its funny, its just its pervasiveness in speedrunning that the "imagine a bus" just does it for me.
It's basically a meme at this point
A frame rule is a lot like a train. To explain it easier imagine a bus, a train is similar to a bus.
@Sophie can you link it?
The best version has to be "rambus," which mean vroom-vroom.

Oh god, did you really have to put 2012 Brex on display like that?! It's painful to look at 😂
At least I said "as far as I know", I guess! We had no idea what was possible or even good in this game back then, it's crazy to see how far the runners have come. I love super in-depth speed running history videos like this. Awesome job, even though 18 year old essay-writing Brex had to make an unfortunate appearance...
Lol
yoo it brex
the og legend
poor 18 yo brex.. im glad he recovered though! 😂😂
"i had perfect movement" **he did not, infact, have perfect movement**
The “cheats detected” warning definitely got me
if you know, you know.
I'm honestly just losing it over the fact it took nearly a decade for speedrunners to notice and utilize a goddamn chair. a chair that could save 8 seconds off a "perfect" run. overlooked for 9 years. amazing.
Tbf Implosion Skip seems to also require catching the start of the cycle, which in itself required to notice it is possible to shoot through walls.
Had IS been discovered later, maybe that entire race towards shaving a cycle would've never happened?
The video he just posted two weeks ago has not even a single person looking closely at a door's visual model for _eight years_ . Starting to think the portal speedrunning community isn't really the sharpest bunch.
@@ao1778true true.
I guess this video is perfect. But you never know with Msushi videos.

This has to be one of the coolest routes in the whole game right now, nice to see it finally being covered.
Also, it wasn't shown here but the tas of the non-implosion skip route eventually got improved to a 58.56, saving another cycle lmao
Welp. I guess the video wasn't perfect.
How is the full game tas going ? I know you guys works on it many month now , im just curious how much is finish
@@bluelemon243 we're planning to finish it and release it by this summer
@@Burger40 wow that so cool, just the fact you are able to make tas for such a long game is insane
@@Burger40 how long do you generally think the TAS will be from start to finish?
He really found a way to fit "imagine a bus" into the video.....
SMB
I thought he's going to talk about framerules
honestly i love you for lying at 16:27 with "this is where the record stands today" lol. after that, i got so incredibly hyped at the intro of the implosion skip section
Maybe they meant for that category. Maybe some leaderboards ban the implosion skip.
@@mikeysheep5380 you are quite unintelligent
I was like, great, video ends back to boring stuff and then
"wait a second there's a chair in this level?"
@@haha-ne6ty I don't know if there are categories on that levels community leaderboard. It was an inference based on what I knew about speedrunning. My logic was that they wouldn't put implosion skip and non-implosion skip on the same leaderboard after some time of implosion skip existing.
@@haha-ne6ty indeed
"A good analogy is a bus stop"
*Mario flashbacks*
ikr
My thoughts exactly. I was so confused for a second because as soon as I heard the bus analogy, my brain went to the mario one and I was struggling to figure out how it connected
Definitely my favorite WR progression, thank you for covering this map
the man
The main rule of speedrunning: if it's not 100% perfect, it WILL be beaten.
With a collalary of if it IS perfect, it will get rerouted faster.
If it is 100% perfect, a new glitch will be discovered, or someone will attempt a tas-only trick or other risky strats
After watching this video i think even if the run is 100 % perfect it still will be beaten
So it's basically the speedrunning equivalent of "if it has hp that can reach 0, it can die"
The only perfect records I know are in dragster and a handful of Matt Turk’s times in Punch Out
Things to take away from this video:
1. Chairs make speedrunning so much easier!
2. The word 'perfect' shall never mean the same..
You mean a good gaming chair
It is just that "perfect" is just a matter of human opinion of saying "Well that's as limited as I think it gets"
That reveal of the chair leading to the implosion skip was amazing. Maybe even...perfect.
16:55 Such a great way to circumvent our expectations pretending like the story was already told and the run was perfected up to this point in the video.
I'm sure that was also the reaction of the speedrunners discovering a chair on the level.
@@XeZrunner having a chair and not having a chair I know whats better
Playing "Farewell" over culminational pre-chair moment was such a strong move. Thank you so much for that.
MAN WHEN YOU SAID "THERE IS A CHAIR AT THIS CHAMBER?" AND SHOWED THE LEGENDS USING IT I ACTUALLY SCREAMED AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I'm loving this
The whole cheats detected thing was funny. Got me lol

After remembering how I'm involved with this map, I'm glad my name was kept out of this one. Your videos are getting better, dig it
Could you elaborate?
@@chicky4ever744 sure, no one looks at comments too much anyways. I found the shot through the door and only told Jetwash, everyone found out the next day after he got the wr within 10 minutes of me telling him. My part in the elevator climb was negligible, everything I did and more was done by I think nid or krzyhau, as I was messing with the climb as a worse 2 portals strategy.
I'm not proud of anything I did in this map, if you have ideas let people know, save yourself the time, the effort, and the shame.
8:29 Wow. I remember back in 2010 my brother and I playing Portal and shooting Wheatly through the door for fun, because it was fun/habitual to just blast the characters with the portal gun and we learned some structures didn't have portal collision. We were kids. It was fun. No idea that it became a speedrun strat 4 years later. That's interesting.
So glad this game's speed running scene is getting some recognition. You're doing great work
"So it's like a bus"
As soon the chair got mentioned I instantly knew where things were headed next. Prop jumping is broken in source it’s ridiculous. Just one chair and suddenly everything speed runners thought they knew about that level got shattered, because source is notorious for prop flying glitches, I mean half life 2 one of the first things patched after the 1.00 release was making prop flying significantly more difficult with just a pallet.
I love how there are so many "perfect" records in this chamber and the thing that broke them was a chair that no one noticed for nearly a decade
“The current world record is not perfect” this is unity we’re talking about, it might as well be perfect
?
@@channel11121 How many times had a record been deemed to be perfect? Never say never.

what is purple guy gonna teach me about neurotoxin sabotage now :P
Oh, this is why I started speedruning games. This community is so cool! Nice video, keep it up!
It's something that not a lot of people talk about in the comments, but i love the songs that you add in these documentaries, they really add in the quality of the vids!
1:54 Framerules go brrr
jeez as soon as you mentioned that’s there’s a random chair I flipped out, there’s always a physics exploit to be had to throw things out of whack. Awesome video, I took several double takes
This video really was the epitome of "Perfect? I can see there's still five minutes left of this video!"
Msushi videos are always worth the wait because the quality is so impressively good.
Keep up the good work, buddy! :)
this is why I love portal speedrunning. because just when you think a run is perfect. someone finds a physics object and blows everything wide open again. 😂 absolutely fantastic.
when you were talking about busses the first thing that came to my mind after that was "so how many framerules do we save?"
Is it just me or do the good RUclipsrs have an easy time getting me hooked on any concept they bring up?
No matter how well a game is made speed runners WILL find a way to break it.
Your story telling skills are off the charts!

I love these videos
love the farewell at 10:22 perfect video as always msushi
I facepalmed with the 8s improvement with the chair
Haven’t seen a stream for a LONG time but still watch the videos, and this one looks good!
I love how the most shocking, surprising thing in the entire video was a *chair*
Your content is such a nice quality, you could make a video about paint drying and it would still be hella interesting and entertaining
Always makes me happy to see a new vid of these
When speedruners say that "this run is perfect and unbeatable", it always makes me smirk.
What's truly impossible is setting an unbeatable time.
The portal speedrunning community is genuinely one of the most wholesome and kindhearted competitive communities I’ve ever known and I always love hearing about runners building off of and up other runners
Omg this whole video is just "but wait there's more" the whole time it's amazing

This is such a great video highlighting the beauty of Portal 2 and Speedrunning
i don't know why but your videos always make me feel sleepy, im not saying its boring, its just kinda the vibe i get. Keep up the work man!
That "Cheats Detected" tagline is genius
I think it’s a similar case to auto scrolling levels and why people dislike them, there is a fastest possible time that is hard set by the game and having a limit like that kinda goes against what people love about speedrunning to begin with.
... Except rayman 1, where autoscrolls are kinda dynamic, and a runner noticed that by going forwards in slow moments and backwards in fast moments, you could bring accelerations earlier and decelerations later.
Your vids are top notch bro, please keep em coming!
