    I think this strategy will suffer from the same limitations as the Spanish beachhead. Too much money is being spent in the Atlantic to fight Japan who will ultimately take out Calcutta, China and Siberia in pretty quick time. When they then put some more CVs under their starting air force, Hawaii might not be defensible, and having to defend Australia at the same time will not always be possible.

    • @paulcolburn3855
      @paulcolburn3855 2 года назад +3

      Agreed. IMHO, there really isn't ANY viable opening for the USA that doesn't include at LEAST 2 CVs off the coast of California on the first turn. Anything less than that, you run the risk of giving your opponent a far too easy Pac victory.

  • @ryanjw15
    @ryanjw15 9 месяцев назад +1

    This strategy in my opinion is absolutely ingenious. The only thing I've changed about it is that it prioritizes the Pacific far more and it doesn't build any battleships at all.

  • @timwinter13

    I won my last game by building a quite similar bridge. Planned carefully from the beginning, I took Spain, Portugal, Chile, Argentina and Colombia, all in one turn, and then took Turkey and Saudi-Arabia with the Uk at the same turn. Yes, the axis earned the 2 Swiss inf and the Swedish 6. But now I had an even more effective Atlantic Bridge. The axis had no way of stopping the Americans from simply marching into Berlin

    Hey GHG, I've found that a strong naval presence(and I mean real strong one, no half measures) by Germany is a sound counter to this. They already have the air force to fill a Navy to match with their own floating bridge. A Germany with 3-4 carriers filled can reach anything they need to, even off the coast of Gibraltar. For something like 70-80 IPCs Germany can create a force to match the American Navy and reach it with ALL their planes. They don't have to fill or protect transports, they just need a military force. Normally people pump in turns worth of land units to protect the coast and battle it out in Europe on land but I've found it's better to preemptively create a Navy that can challenge the floating bridge with all those IPCs instead.
    If you concede the waters as the Axis you allow the allies the freedom to dictate the terms of the engagement. You can build up the land troops in Europe all you want. The allies will just hit where the troops are not, establish a combined beach head and deteriorate the Axis position. They have the choice of Norway, France, Italy or straight into Germany and it's impossible to cover it all by building land units. If you build up the navy to challenge the bridge you take that strategic flexibility off the table. You may never need to purchase a single land unit in Europe if it's done well.
    The end result is 5 turns of full spend of America alone in Europe is not enough to muscle out the German navy from the Atlantic. Three full carriers and two battleships aren't enough when Germany has the same or better.
    If Germany goes this route, America REQUIRES early investment from UK in the Atlantic to establish the beach head. Middle Earth becomes disrupted because it diverts crucial early spending needs from the home front. It's hard to tell if Germany is going that route because the Persia factory and harbor are R2 purchases, Germany can hold off on the heavy naval purchases until turn 3-4 to mask their intentions. They can build 2 carriers and a Battleship in a single purchase the same as the US and all of a sudden the navies are on par and it's a 50/50 battle for dominance of the Atlantic. Only it's not, because Germany has the home field advantage and as long as the German navy exists in force it is a limiting factor in the strategic flexibility of the allies. If UK switches production into London/Canada after the fact that Persia is established it's too late and the Axis has effectively made the Allies waste a crucial 30+ IPCs in a part of the board that will not play a deciding factor in the victory.

    If you're willing to only be able to attack on turn 5 or later, you can do the following: Once you land in Morocco, move troops to Algeria. Attack Italy in Sea Zone 95; on that same turn, move up the troops you shucked into Morocco last time into Algeria (if you didn't attack in there). Next turn, move your boats back into Sea Zone 94 and back to Italy and attack again. Move your shucked units from Morocco into Algeria and shuck units into Morocco again. This allows you to offensively shuck Italy and take them out quickly and easily. The only cons are that it takes one more turn to set up and your fleet won't have access to your four transports in Sea Zone 91 to defend them.

  • @ianchapman6254
    @ianchapman6254 5 лет назад +6

    This is a solid strategy as far as it goes, but my main criticism is that it is SLOW. Even with the USA's economic muscle it takes way too long to build up the Naval Ships to support a two tiered bridge. By the time you have this set up, the Germans have taken Moscow and you've lost. I think a better idea is to have a bridge to Gibraltar and then on turn 4-5 you simply attack Spain. Yes you turn the Neutrals pro-Axis, but honestly the upside is worth it. You can attack and/or reinforce Spain every turn from the Eastern and Central US (meaning the Axis can not keep it), and you can put a factory there too. Not only that but having your major Atlantic fleet parked at Gibraltar with a huge US presence in Spain along with 10+ loaded transports puts immediate pressure on Germany up to and including W. Germany. This forces Germany to immediately turn its main production and manpower reserves your way....and this saves Russia.

    Good Video. Smart strategy. Keep a steady stream of supplies flowing into the battlezones.
    I'm a Newb, but here would be my American Priorities:
    1. Prevent Sea Lion.
    Reinforce London if possible.
    2. Defend West Coast from Japan.
    Defend Alaska if needed. Don't allow them to gain a foothold in North America.
    3. If needed, take pressure off Russia. Threaten the Germans with an attack on Normandy/Southern France. Or take Norway and Finland. Start moving troops and planes into Russia. If the Japanese have attacked Russia, maybe move up to Alaska and threaten the Home Islands with a major attack, maybe Liberate any Soviet Eastern territories if you can. Later on in the game threaten the money Islands.
    4. Secure the Hawaiian islands. Secure a route to Australia/New Zealand.
    5. Try to keep ANZAC alive.
    6. Choose an Axis power to destroy. Focus 65% or more on that unless your Allies are threatened.
    7. If attacking Japan, take the money Islands. Consolidate the South Pacific.
    Secure the Indian Ocean. Drive them out of India and Burma.
    8. If attacking Germany and Italy. Secure the Atlantic Ocean and routes to London and Africa. Drive the Axis from Africa and the Middle East. Then either land in France and Liberate Paris, or land in Rome.
    What do think?

    • @Hutcho72
      @Hutcho72 5 лет назад +1

      @Shanezkool, when playing America a few months ago when we played Global. Japan and America had huge fleets staring each other off.
      With a huge American presence in the Hawain Islands, this forced the Japanese to also maintain a large home fleet near Japan to counter any American moves.
      This allowed for the Anzacs actually move in and capture the territories of Indonesia and also PNG and also Borneo while keeping out of the range of the Japanese forces.
      This allowed for the Anzacs to expand, and also move into India and start reinforcing Britain, and then freeing up British forces to assist the Chinese forces out, who by turn 3 were still holding out against the Japanese forces through dogged defence, and counter attacks where possible.
      I was starting to build a huge Submarine fleet to prepare to wipe out the Japanese fleet once and for all in the Pacific.
      In the Atlantic Business as usual secure Africa first and put pressure on Italy and then deny Italy the bonus for holding the Med.
      The game ended before America could make a big presence in Europe, as we simply ran out of time to play being our first time at playing Global.

    I may have been using this rule wrong the whole time but we have always 'activated' Brazil whether Japan attacks or not. By my reading of the rules all it says is that the US has to stay away from the European and African coasts, but you can make it to Brazil by hugging the American coast

    • @mema0005
      @mema0005 7 лет назад +2

      I'm going to answer my own point, I see that only nations at war can activate neutrals. So by that I guess you can buy a second transport and move 2 of them down there while the US stays neutral (assuming it is still neutral), and then drop the tank off to activate Brazil on turn 4 before hotfooting back to the US

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  7 лет назад +2

      The rules state that you can't end movement of ships in any space that isn't adjacent to US territory on the Europe map while not at war with Germany. So you are limited to moving transports to SZ 101 and SZ 89. You can move warships to SZ 102 but that isn't particularly helpful in this case.

    Hello General. Love your videos, please keep doing what you are doing. Just wondering, I think I caught you moving a tank to Brazil with a transport in turn one. Don't transports have to be loaded with at least one infantry before you can transport anything else? Cheers!

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  8 лет назад +24

      Thank you Allan. I read the rule book again just to be sure that I was doing it correctly. What it says is that the capacity is 1 tank plus 1 infantry. It does not say you MUST include the infantry. What it all means is that you can't have 2 units on a transport unless at least 1 of them is an infantry.

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  7 лет назад +6

      You have to own a factory at the start of your turn to be able to build on it. So if you took it a turn earlier you could build on it. Another thing, if you own it and then you liberate Paris then the factory and the territory go back under the control of the French. That means you might want to build on it and the Normandy factory if you own it for awhile before you liberate Paris.

      Hi Tony.
      Page 15 of the Europe Second Edition Rulebook says " ( A neutral power) can't move units into or through territories or onto ships belonging to another power or use another power's naval bases, nor can another power move land or air units into or through it's territories or onto it's ships or use it's naval bases." So the answer is no Tony. I guess I'll have to stop landing my fighter from the Philippines on Australia when Japan doesn't attack on turn 1.

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  7 лет назад +2

      That's why I build enough boats that it would take out most of the Luftwaffe if they decide to attack. Rather than rushing over with a bunch of transports I take my time and build warships for sz 91 and inside the Med where they are landing troops. Also, remember that sz 91 will probably not be in the range of any German fighters, especially if you take out Gibraltar and Morocco if they have fallen. Destroying the Luftwaffe is also a worthy goal and America has the ability to build more ships whereas the Germans are limited in how many planes they can build and still fight against the Russians and the other allies who have already been landing in Europe.

    Does Germany often build a big navy in your games? It seems 2 BB, 3 CV is a bit overkill for the Atlantic side...

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  8 лет назад +6

      The reason that I go with that much firepower in the Atlantic is that I want to put a navy adjacent to Europe that won't be attacked. Germany has a large air force and it would be worth it for them to take out your navy even if it meant killing all of their planes in the process. It would take too long to rebuild your navy to the point where you could sail back over there and then the game would be all but over for the allies. I also like to have the carriers so that I have planes to support my amphibious attacks and strategic bombing raids. The battleships can use their shore bombardment and absorb hits with their capital ship ability if the Germans or Italians attack your navy. The third carrier is for protecting the transports in SZ 91 in the middle of my "floating bridge".
      To answer your question though, no Germany doesn't usually build a huge navy in my games. It is enough that when combined with their planes could take out a navy if it isn't strong enough.
      IMO if you can't build a big enough navy in the Atlantic to ward off an attack then you might as well spend all of your money in the Pacific or you'll end up only putting 8-10 ground units in Europe before losing what little you do have.

    • @Hutcho72
      @Hutcho72 5 лет назад

      I actually did the same thing, except I was playing America, and moved a huge Wolfpack of Subs into the Med to wipe out the Italian fleet.
      Germany was heavily occupied by Russia, and also the British putting up a solid defense in Africa, and still maintaining a solid navy.
      America also wiped out the German Submarines, who did try and so what you suggested, to hamper the American fleet.
      Having a Destroyer with your fleet always, and fighter planes tends to negate surprise attacks.

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  7 лет назад +4

      Yes they can move their warships there and not loaded transports. Basically a useless move since being one space closer to America on a naval base gets you the same distance away when for you're allowed to declare war on the Germans and Italians. Not sure why they would even bother putting that in there.

    • @paulcolburn6545
      @paulcolburn6545 7 лет назад

      I agree with the floating bridge, but why not just put it in Alaska to the Soviet Far East? Why go to the Atlantic when the Pacific is much easier? You need far less boats, far less transports. Just build tanks and infantry in San Francisco and shuttle them over from Alaska into Vladivostok.

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  7 лет назад

      The problem with that idea is the Japanese navy which is much stronger than the German navy. It would be fairly easy to disrupt a bridge from Alaska. Perhaps later in the game you could do that after you've had a chance to reduce the Japanese navy but not as a starting strategy like this one is in the video. The other thing is that you are a long way from where you need to be to intervene in the assault on Russia or Calcutta. It's a good question Paul, I just think that crossing that strait is more of a late game strategy. If it works for you early in the game though, go for it!!

      back in the days of anniversary and revised we would see a lot of factory builds in alaska for an aggressive push to the soviet far east for the US.

      If you are forcing Japan to "react" and commit planes and ships to disrupt it, you indirectly "help" India and Anzac. And is quick. If Japan goes to war turn 1, you can park almost everything you have left in Alaska or the Aleutian Islands on US-1. So, even if all it does is divert Japan for a turn or two to wipe you out, you GAINED time for Anzac and India. And time = money.

      If you're inquiring about the infantry you can find many of them here;
      www.hobbylinc.com/1:72-scale-world-war-ii-wwii-plastic-model-military-figures
      Make sure that where ever you get them from that they are 1/72 scale for the infantry as that is the same size as A&A.

      No they are made by FMG. They are an unreliable company who can't be bothered to stock the market with more flight stands. I have a friend in Toronto who is making flight stands now. Tune into my channel in the near future for information on them.

    I've got a question for you general. I was playing a game and japan used its fleet at the Caroline islands and sea zone 6 to take Hawaii on the first turn. After that they just kept building up fighters and landing them there and I was never able to take it back. What would you do if the Japanese took Hawaii on the first turn?

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  7 лет назад +1

      One thing you could try is spending your money in the Atlantic instead and taking out Germany as fast as possible. You would need to defend the west coast of course from the Japanese but if they can't make a landing then there isn't much money out there for them. They would be distracted from what they should be focussing on which is the mainland and the money islands where they can pick up the money they need to take the Pacific side of the board.

      Japan cannot defend Hawaii from the US at the start of the game. Attacking the US is probably the fastest route to losing that the Axis can take.

      With japan I always tend to sink the US navy first then keep my navy close to their sea zone to stop them from building a navy again. Watching this video highlights that if you need to keep their navy in check

    why is he moving units as America when it's not even America's turn?

  • @SteelCurtain_90
    @SteelCurtain_90 4 года назад

    No offense mate... but what you're building is what we call "growing petunias" ...in that, it looks really pretty with an enormous navy ...but is it going to be effective or sit there and be pretty? Maybe not so efficient considering that when doing an amphibious assault ...not only do you have to over match the opponents ground troops, but you'll also need to purchase more than any 4 transports to get them there... not to mention the big boats to protect them along the way. Very expensive going and in relative terms, you'll just fall further and further back if Germany is massing ground troops (Infantry and tanks) = you're not getting in. You spent 4 turns buying boats but consider what Germany buys to counter with 4 turns. You said 8 land units to invade with when Germany has made 4 turns? So then what? More transports? Then also factor Japan left that unattended will swell to the point of being a serious threat to USA if the green boys get caught focusing too much attention in the Atlantic. Japan can mass purchase transports in the pacific leading to the option of critical assaults on Russia or roaming the coast of Americas or Australia creating havoc. If I see USA massing in Europe, I'm building land units for Germany... mostly infantry that continues mounting pressure on Russia... then Japan back-doors Russia with devastating pressure.
    I'll suggest this... build massive navy then sail to protect UK waters so they can also build navy. The combination of UK and USA naval power will eventually threaten and create cracks in Europe defense.

    So you can put a no buy fighter on a new carrier ! This is cheating .

    • @primroselane1
      @primroselane1  5 лет назад +5

      It would be only cheating if the rule book didn't allow it. Page 22 of the Europe Rulebook under the heading 'Where Units Can Move">Air Units>first bullet point;
      A fighter or tactical bomber can land in a sea zone (even a hostile one) that is adjacent to an industrial complex that you own if you will be mobilizing an aircraft carrier that you previously purchased in that zone during the Mobilize New Units phase.
