Sony FDR-AX33 Review - Best 4K Camcorder Under $1000

  • In all my 30 years of shooting video, I've not encountered a finer consumer camcorder than the Sony FDR-AX33. The first truly affordable 4K camcorder that is zoomable, with steadi-shot technology that really makes a difference. In this review I include a number of examples and comparisons to the GoPro Hero4 - the other affordable consumer video device that is bringing on the 4K revolution. The features, color and versatility of the AX33 are in my opinion what make it the Ultimate 4K (Ultra HD) camera under $1000 - and it's also a formidable still camera! Additional test videos I've made with this camera:

    Exciting to see some great little 4k camcorders coming to market under $1,000.00. Looking forward to adding one to my camera lineup but really looking for the "affordable " 4k that can record at 60fps. Love Sony's floating lens stabalization. Good stuff Tony!

My Dad told me to research the video camera's on the market. I found your RUclips video to be the best info out their. I told my Dad what I had found and the information. He checked out the info and bought me one. So thank you so much and you might see my video's on CMT.

    Hi Tony, great video, I love how much effort you put into describing the camera and what it could do. I'm looking to use this camera to record in 4K whilst simultaneously outputting on the HDMI. I know you've already answered this question in the comments, but we've been able to get our hands on the FDR-AX30 and the FDR-AX100 while in Japan and unfortunately they both display a message that they cannot record 4K while outputting externally. I was hoping that you would be kind enough to retest this functionality and if possible do a small video showing that it is in fact recording 4K and outputting on the HDMI.
    - Cheers

    Thanks for the great video! I recently bought myself the Panasonic HC-WX970 and it's been great. However, I do wish the white balance performance was a little better. Still though, awesome camera for the price!
    However, after watching your video, I'm now leaning towards the Sony -- especially because of the unique image stabilization. Would you say this feature alone is worth the purchase?
    Also, one more question: Can the LED on the front be used for low-light video, or is that only intended for photos?
    Again, thank you! Keep up the great work.

    thanks for the video. Do you think the AX33 will render a sharper video at 1080P than the CX675 @ 1080P (max res) which also has Balanced Optical SteadyShot but half the price. I think the AX has a larger sensor.

    Good review Tony. You mentioned the viewing screen was hard to see in bright light, what about using the viewfinder? Have you tried that? My current camera doesn't have a viewfinder and that seems to be a problem, would probably also help me with the camera shake.

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  8 лет назад

      The viewfinder works just great. I hadn't even figured out that it had one when I made this review. It's great in sunlight. If you use an extended life battery though (one of the longer ones) then the battery will press against your nose when using the viewfinder. Minor problem though.

  • @DannyFyffe

    What a FANTASTIC review. Where do I start? The church you zoomed out to had a heat signature coming off of it so you could see the waviness of it. So that tells me the camcorder is not perfect and you could not get a good still from that, but I agree that it appears when you are closer to an object, like the hardware store you zoomed into then that is much clearer and steadier and I think you could pull fantastic stills from that. I was SHOCKED when you pulled out an SD card. I guess Sony finally forgot about the memory stick which was horrible! That feature alone adds value to it. Would you say that AX 100 camcorder is a better one than this one at a much higher price? Is this a Cmos sensor? The review was long, BUT it went by fast as you always make your reviews so very interesting. I loved all the video and stills you interspersed with the review. Your method of review is just the best. So while it peaked over 15 minutes, it felt like 5! The nightshot was a bit scary! ;-) LOVE the review. Can't wait to see what you bring to us in the future with this beast.

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  9 лет назад

      Thanks for the comment Danny. Yes, like you I don't like the Sony Memory stick. Here's the info Sony provides about the sensor: - Pixel Gross : Approx. 18.9M pixels - Color Filter System : RGB primary color filters - Effective Picture Resolution : Movie: Approx. 8.29 MP(16:9) Still: Approx. 10.3 MP (16:9) / Approx. 7.74 MP (4:3) - Imaging Sensor : 1/2.3" (7.76mm) back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS Sensor - Processor : BIONZ® X image processor. MORE VIDEO TO COME! TLG

      Tony Lee Glenn I thought they would have to go with the cmos and not ccd's given the price, but the video did look good overall. We need to see some garden shots and some inside shots to see how it handles artificial light. Again, great review Tony. You are THE MAN! ;-)

    Hi
    Nice review!
    I just wonder about the color tone of the footage, I have an older simpler sony, which also shoots videos with a cool or bluish color hint to it.
    -My current camera has no relevant adjustments available.
    -What about the AX33? Would it be possible to manual adjust the colortone, but at the same time leave other automatics on?
    j.

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  9 лет назад

      I've not tried to adjust color on the camera yet Johannes. I'm planning some additional tests tomorrow, and will probably post a video to show the results tomorrow night. I will say that the colors straight out of the box are far more satisfying that the GoPro Hero4 Black Edition that I've been shooting 4K with. I'm actually not saying anything is bluish - just more toward the blue that the slightly warm tones I get with the GoPro. I find the Sony's color much richer across the whole spectrum. Blacks are blacker - which to me makes a great different in tone. Also - so far I've not done any color grading in Premier Pro CC 2014. I've also not shot in the 100 meg per second mode - but I imagine the color depth will be even greater and more editiable in that setting. Stay tuned for more tests. Tony

    Nice review on your new camera Tony. You have me really thinking about one now for a companion to my HERO 4. I looked up the specs on it and see it has a 10x Optical Zoom and they are saying it has a 120x Digital Zoom (which doesn't mean a whole lot). You can think of the Digital Zoom as taking a still photo when you're zoomed in at the 10x power and then zooming in on that still photo, much like you would do on your computer. I was looking at some of the Cannon and other models with up to 32x Optical zoom but I read that the battery life is atrociously short and extra batteries are outrageously expensive. That's what has kept me sitting on the sidelines
    The image stabilization looks pretty good in your sample videos at full zoom. I wonder how it'd work at a little league game trying to capture some of the action. I also see if has WiFi capability so does it have a cell phone compatible app like the GoPro to operate it? I'm surprised it doesn't have the capability to operate directly from an external power source.
    Keep us up to date on how it's working out. Oh Yeah, and the RAVPower battery pack as well :-)

    I had my hands around that baby at Best Buy just yesterday, the $799 pricetag was very very tempting. Thinking about going back and getting it after watching this, but now that it's a year old, what do I do? +Waynez Gamez Hey brother. The updated model with 20X zoom is coming out in mid-March. It will be $999 again like this one was when I purchased. Might want to wait for that one if the extra $200 is no big issue. Think it's called the AX53.

      immitchbiatch I'm not sure if it will back to CS5. I'm pretty sure CS6 supports 4K, and I know that Premiere Pro CC 2014 does a fantastic job with this video, but the older CS5 might not handle the advanced codec.

      ***** Hey Collin. A couple of questions - you shot it in 4K right? The camera does shoot in 1080p also, and sometimes you're shooting in that mode rather than 4K. Also, depending on what settings you use to export the video for RUclips, it might get converted down to 1080p. I make sure I shoot in 4K, then I make sure to export in 3840X2160, then when I upload to RUclips it does give the 4K and 1440p options. Sometimes you have to wait for RUclips to publish the renditions of the larger sizes. Hope this helps.

    Excellent review. I have a question, you said you pre-ordered it. How long did it take for the store to ship the camcorder to you? I asked the store on Amazon about the free batteries, they told me those can be up to an average 1 hour. That's a short battery life, so I guess I must buy something better for it later. I have another Sony, I got a "no-brand" battery for it, and it's easily can run 6 hours without any problem. :) Hopefully I can find something cheap high cap battery for the 4K cam too.
    I was thinking about other than Sony. Panasonic, maybe something else, but I just love my Sony HD camcorder so much, that I decided to stay with Sony. I mean my camcorder fell from 4 feet to the floor. It's cracked. I was 100% sure that it's dead. But yet, It's happened like a year ago, and It's still running just fine. I got so impressed by that, I think I can't go wrong with another Sony brand camcorder. :-)

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  9 лет назад +1

      Hey - I pre-ordered mine back in early February - so I guess it took about 3 weeks to come. I think the official release date was supposed to be March 6. I used to only use Sony, but then switched to Canons for awhile. No doubt the Sony's are built better. My battery seems to get more than an hour. Shooting in 1080p I'm guessing it could shoot at least 2 hours. I'll do some tests and let you know.

      Tony Lee Glenn I cancelled my Amazon pre-order and I ordered it from a store that had it online. They shipped it and I'll get my camcorder tomorrow. I found another review, it says the cords and the batteries are the same as the older Sony models', so I'm really happy for that. haha

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  7 лет назад +1

      Hey Sylvester. I'm probably not the best to answer your questions. I've used the newer AX53 which has a much improved zoom - and I love it. I've not used the AX40/B but you have me curious about the model. Rather than a wireless mic, I usually use a small Zoom H1 with a Sony Stereo mic (ECM-CS3) connected. The recorder is so small the subject can just put in in a pocket and clip the mic to their shirt or lapel. Then I synch the audio with the video easily in Premiere Pro. Maybe someone else reading these comments can provide better advice. Many thanks for watching my videos. TLG

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  9 лет назад

      Really great question. I've not used it in such a situation yet, but I can say that in twilight situation outside the video has been very satisfying. Maybe I can shoot some Easter church play video this weekend and show you. I've been waiting for camcorderinfo.com to post their lux tests, but it hasn't happened yet. I've used the HF-G10 and HF-G20, and the low light results are at least comparable to these cams. The G30 is supposed to be exceptional - but last year's AX100 from Sony beat the G30 for camcorder of the year - so hopefully the AX33 is somewhere in the same ball park.

      Robert - I just found this by ***** - who did a great job showing the low light capabilities. Looks outstanding to me - he says "It's OK" in his video, but he's an understated guy. His video samples look superb at 4K on my 5K retina iMac.

    Hello. I wanted to make a long time lapse video of the night sky. I am worried about the lack of battery power. I saw you use an adapter to get external power through an extension cord. What was that adapter called? Where did you buy it? How much did it cost. Thanks!

      Hey - Great question. Here's the battery pack I use (and love) ruclips.net/video/dJVyj6eQl9A/видео.html - and here's a 10-hour night sky time lapse I shot using the same pack. ruclips.net/video/ddwCEP6jXRw/видео.html I think it costed about $40.

    please 2 questions if possible because Sony Europa don't know !!!
    - Is the HDMI active when recording? and if so, can we choose the output format?
    - The composite output on hold with the multi VMC-15MR2 cable is she active during the recording?

      Great, thanks! I bought a back up battery (an official one, extended life one) as well as one from Opteka which is also larger and supposed to be a good battery. Those, plus the original should be good for 4 hours at minimum I would hope and that's all I need. Thanks for the reply!

    3-what is the normal fps in 1920 HD {60/120 fps} ?
    4-is there any kind of splash proof or dust proof cover available in the market as i am concerned as its $1000 unit

      If I could get the AX100 for that price I'd buy it. Bigger sensor - But I've never shot with one. I just going with what I know about the chip. If there were as much as a $400 difference, I'd go with the AX33. I just keep finding things to love about it. Going to do a follow-up to this video to share more. TLG

      I've been trying to do some research on it to see if the stabilization method is the same as in the AX33. All I can fine is with the AX33 they call it : "Balanced Optical SteadyShot" and with the AX100 they call it "Optical SteadyShot Image Stabilization with Active Mode". With the AX33 they seem to be making a big deal out of the "BALANCED' part of it and as if it is better than what the AX100 has. For what I'll probably be doing and knowing who also may be 'trying' to use it I'm thinking I might be better off trying to get the best stabilization system available, if you know what I mean :-)
      I have to admit I was 'floored' when the guy at Best Buy told me about it. He said some guy bought it, took it home and then his wife made him return it. He said it would some with the original 'new' warranty so that's a plus anyway and for only ~ $122 more than the AX33 that pretty much stopped me in my tracks. The stabilization with the '33 is pretty impressive. Now I don't know what to do. Best Buy doesn't carry the AX33 for some strange reason. Oh Yeah, I see there is also a AXP35 now out but can't find a price for it yet.

    Hi Tony - good video. I haven't checked your channel yet in full yet, but I am interested in a camcorder instead of using my Nikon J1 for recording video. Unfortunately I cannot afford $999 for a camcorder. Was wondering what in your opinion would be the best Camcorder to get that is under $500?

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  9 лет назад +1

      This is a tough question to answer - there are some great options. I'll have to say that when it comes to under $500 I really like the features of the Canons. I'd say that at current price of $449 on Amazon, the Canon VIXIA HF R62 is darned hard to beat. I love the new 35 meg per second mp4 option, 60p 1080p, good sized The DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor. A lot to love with that cam. It's not 4K, but knowing what I know about older Canons (I have the HFS 100, HFS 200, HFM30 and have used HFG10 and HFG20) - I'd say this would be a killer cam. Read some reviews and see what people are saying - largely positive comments. Hope this helps! TLG

    Question: My old camcorder (Sony HDR-CX550) saves clips to a limit of 10 minutes each. In other words, it will not save a clip more than 10 minutes long, which is a complete bummer when trying to catch a whole concert, etc... Does this camcorder record unlimited-length video clips? Can I take a full 2-hour video without it being automatically chopped up into little 10-minute pieces that make a stutter on my full video when I string the clips together? Please do let me know if it can shoot unlimited-length videos. Great review!

    • @ArtR0001
      @ArtR0001 8 лет назад

      +HoovedAvenger I recorded a 1:45 clip in 4K on vacation before the battery gave out, and that wasn't a full charge. So, I would say it is limited by battery/DC power and the size of your SDXC card. Now then, your video editor and computer might have issues with the large file (in 4K) but that is the computer's problem, not the camcorders.

    • @HoovedAvenger
      @HoovedAvenger 8 лет назад

      +ArtR0001
      Problem with your reply: The HDR-CX550 does not even record in 4K. It's an older camcorder. See the date stamp of my comment. The CX550 does, in fact, cut all clips over ten minutes into ten-minute chunks of 1080i (yes, it's that old... Doesn't even do proper 1080p).
      If, however, you do find a way to shoot in 4K with the HDR-CX550, please let me know.... It would be interesting, saying 4K didn't exist when it was made.
      Thanks! :-)

      +Prazon Adriel I've never used it for live streaming. Not sure how you'd do that without some adaptors - but it can be done with the right supplemental gear. It doesn't shut off once you start recording, until it runs out of battery power or space on the SDHC card.

      You can get a lot of video on a 64 gig card. Be sure to use the card recommended on Amazon, or wherever you buy the cards. You can record at 100 megs per second or 60 megs per second. Honestly, the 60 meg video looks just great, but I use the 100 meg option if I'm getting paid for a shoot, just to make sure I have the very best quality. It uses much more space to shoot in the 100 meg mode though. This is an outstanding camcorder. You should love it.

      Tony Lee Glenn Sorry, I meant the Sonya6300 not the a6000. It's zoomable and you can control what you are focusing on, you can also change the lense and do macro or take video of stuff that is very far away. Im not saying you are wrong I just don't get what this camera has to compensate for not being able to do what the a6300 can do at the same price.

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  7 лет назад

      When did the A6300 com out Franklin? Did you realize you're watching a video I posted in February of 2015. I don't think there was an A6300 then. Cool to know it has those capabilities. I use the AX33 every day - we have 3 of them and they are just great dependable camcorders.

      Tony Lee Glenn I just found out why, the A6300 can't zoom while filming hahah, my bad.

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  7 лет назад

      I agree though. I love the look of alternate lenses shot from DSLRs and other cameras. Main reason I still used camcorders mostly though is the zoomability via optics, and the ability to shoot long events like board meetings and physician interviews. With a DSLR you often have to do a bunch of start and stop video that doesn't happen with the camcorder. Also, you can get a lot of the same depth of field effect with the AX33 if you know what you are doing. Either device will still get you stunning video. The AX 53 came out earlier this year with 20X optical zoom. I'd like to upgrade to one of those.
