    VIDEO INDEX:
00:02 - Hardware and camera overview
    06:21 - UltraHD / 4K explainer
06:37 - Video and bit rate settings overview
08:57 - Slow motion sample footage
09:05 - 4k sample footage daylight and low light
10:40 - Editing 4k Footage in Final Cut Pro
    11:19 - Microphone sensitivty
    11:51- Conclusion and final thoughts
Image quality is excellent even in low light, the stabilizer works remarkably well even when zoomed in all the way, and it is completely compatible with older 1080p and earlier televisions (although non-HMDI sets will need an optional cable).
There are three basic shooting modes, including Sony's 4k format, Sony's higher bit rate HD 1080 format, and standard 1080p AVCHD for better compatibility. My suggestion is that if you're buying a 4k camera, shoot in the 100 megabit per second 4k mode to "future proof" recordings for the 4k television you might own in the future vs. shooting in HD.
My only complaint with the camera over all is its microphone sensitivity. The mic will pick up a hand handling the camera (not unique to this camera) as well as picking up the optical stabilizer's noise. The latter will only be apparent in quiet scenes, but it will make capturing dialog in a quiet room challenging without an external microphone. The camera does support external audio sources through its mic port.
Another thing to keep in mind is that this camera records video at 4 times the standard HD resolution. A 4k television will be needed to enjoy the footage at the maximum resolution but is not required.
But editing 4k footage will require a computer that's more up-to-date. The footage can be a challenge for older computers or more current ones with weak processors. My 2012 Macbook Pro Retina with a 2.6 ghz i7 that easily works with 1080 footage gets bogged down working with 4k footage. It's no unusable but very noticeably slower to process the video. I would recommend more modern i5 or i7 machines with good discrete GPUs for the best results. It will be editable with less, sure, but a lot slower to work with.
All that said this is an excellent camera for the price. I am very pleased with its performance.

Thank you for the excellent way you described this camcorder.
I would like to know whether I can have remote control for this model so that I can Zoom in and Out using the remote device. I would like to upload a few lectures in mathematics to U- tube. The lectures will be taped indoor and I do not have any body to assist me behind the camcorder. So I do need the zooming device.
I also would like to know whether I can connect this camcorder to a monitor facing me while presenting my lectures so that I see myself while presenting my lectures and see whether the written stuff on the board are zoomed properly and are readable. Can I have this feature with this camcorder. Thank you

I would give it about 2 to 3 yrs until getting me a 4K camcorder. HD is fine for now unless ur job requires the best image possible. This camcorder will get smaller lighter and cheaper with time. For now getting a 4K Tv is probably a better idea since most media is headed towards 4K. Thanks for the nice review.

Another informative video, Lon. Your discussion about SDCard speeds made me suggest that you grab a few cards, test them with BlackMagic or similar speed test software, and see how they compare vs the labels which I think you'll find are often "up to" a certain speed and not the minimum. Some advice about which cards to buy and which to stay away from might be useful.

Couldn't you use proxy media when editing on an older machine? It would take longer to render but I would think editing would be fine.
Speaking of toddlers...it is cool to think that my kid will be able to see himself in the 720p and 1080p videos I have shot of him. I only have crappy photos of myself as a kid.

Hello, not English and am using google translator.
I bought AX33 but I finish satisfied with the performance in low light, usually engrave night and I wonder if Panasonic HC-VX870 performs better in low light. There is much difference?
I also worry about the stabilization system. Over time it will not damage the lens is not fixed?
If you like the Sony, I would like to give me a tip for not returning the camera.
I urge your answer because I'm still in time to return the camera.
    Greetings from Málaga. Spain.

Are you able to edit the footage of Sony AX33 using imovie. I heard there are compatibility issues.

  • @MagnumVideos

You brought up something I had not considered. Editing. I'm using a 4G ram MacBook Pro with iMovie. It's not too fast, obviously. What kind of editing issues will I have with this camera? Can I record in 4K and then edit in 1080p? Can I record in 1080p and edit it from that? I just don't want to slow things down any more than they already area. I'm currently using an HD camera but not 4K. Any suggestions on the best approach?

+Lon Seidman If you're struggling with 16GB, I'm sure my 4GB will give up the ghost. I know Apple sells a 4K converter software for $23.99. Supposedly, it compresses everything without losing the 4K quality. I think it converts it to an MP4 file, but I'm not certain on that. I'll still probably need to upgrade my ram memory in order to convert a 4K file.

Is this worth the $1000 price tag? I really want the image stabilization system this camcorder has. 4K is a nice bonus too. But for some reason I'm still a bit hesitant

Thanks for a great review.. I have the sony 4k fdrax33 but don't have the better computer. what settings can I set the sony fdrax33 so I may be able to use it with my older computer and edit with moviemaker. And do I have to use the class 10 sd card? I know I'm giving up quality but this way I can use it, until I get better equipment and know how.. Thanks for your help.

Lon, great videos. I'm looking for a camcorder sub $1000 for recording various events (outdoor/indoor sports, parties, general outdoor stuff, etc.). My current challenge is finding a device which I can control with an ipad via wireless. In other videos you show and comment on the delay with the ios streaming from camcorder to mobile device. Can you please comment on this camera's performance? And which camcorders you've reviewed performed better than others in this area? My usage will be to place it on a tall tripod with a remote control pan/tilt, while viewing the camcorder via the ipad. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you may be able to provide!

I think it would really help your program out, it is like watching Daym Drops about his food reviews. He goes in deep about the sandwich but you always wonder where it stands on a scaled of 1-5. Just suggestion but I think it would be a big value add.

this is the only camera that has stabilization, the ax100 does not have it. I have both cameras now. and the ax33 stability is the game changer. Panasonic 4k cams have no stability either.
