Here is my comparison between the Sony FDR-AX100 and the FDR-AX33. This review was delayed because it required a firmware update to grant the AX100 the same 100Mbps data rate offered by the smaller and newer AX33. Enjoy!

Great review. You have a great speaking skill! I've been wavering between the ax100 and ax33 but your final comment on the portability I think is what has sold me on the ax33.
I finally bought the FDR AX100. Great video! Thanks for the info!
Really nice job, thanks!
Jay
Perfect! Thanks again. good details and info since you already tested them.. ....(now need to check again your unboxing of the Philips HUE..That system has bee on my eyes since the first time it appeared) See you Around...
Real good review/comparison. I enjoyed it. Thank you.
Sony needs to increase the zoom power of their 4K video cameras.
Hi mate. Great review video. Very informative. Just a suggestion: a comparision video an still shots will make your reviews the best.Thanks.
Every time I watch your videos on SONY camcorders and cameras I end up buying them. Yesterday I ordered the AX33 should be here later today, and about 30 minutes ago I also ordered the AX100. But I am waiting on approval for that one since it's more expensive. We shall find out in 24 hours.
did you end up getting your camera and where you bought it amazon or ebay trying to get a used like new one but not sure who to trust
I took a a 23 minute video in 4K at the 100MB/s setting. The video was 18GB in size taken with the FDR-AX100E. A 64GB card will record for 1:12 minutes at 100MB/s and at 2:15 minutes on the PAL version.
You can get clean HDMI on the AX33, why do you say it can't do it?
I use a flash on my ax33 for pics. Superb results. Very nice cam.
Hello and thanks for the video! One question: I would like to buy one of the two cameras which I would use mainly for recording live musical performances in concert halls, so internal spaces. The camera will be fixed and I would frequently need to record from distance so would need to use the zoom. Not always will there be perfect light but generally my figure would be well lit. Which of the two would you recommend for such a use? Thanks.
Hi thank you for your excellent video I have a Sony Handycam FDR-AX33 I have a little field monitor 4K but when recording it says will not outputting 4k if I use this atomos shotgun or ninja Assassin will this screen still work for me as I can use it as a bigger screen as well as a recording device or will it just switch off like my little field monitor does when I press record or do i need the AX100
Thanks for the review. How would the AX33 perform vs the Sony NX30?
hi i have the Sony fdr ax33 and I use an external screen when I'm recording videos put on this camera it is saying cannot output screen in 4K mode is there anything I can do so we will output the screen I've tried the settings and cannot see anything thank you
very helpful video
Thanks. The AX 100 is a dream.
Do you have a video comparing the image quality between the two cameras?
Hey Ed, what about the Sony HDR-CX900. If you don't have the cash or don't need 4K how does it compare to say a VG30. What are your thoughts on the CX900 in general?
My friend and I are looking at both of these cameras, we will be using tripods with our cameras, but we will be filming trains which cause lots of vibrations in the ground. Which would be the better choice in your opinion?
INTERESTING - ALL THE BEST !!!
hi wich one would you advise me.
the price isn't important only the quality. I want to make videos in aircrafts and videos about holidays in Indonesia but I have a samsung 4k tv and want to see a really good 4k quality, because I bought a gopro 4 black, which should have 4k also but it wasn't really the right one. So what do you mean is better for me to buy.
And time laps and slow motion would be nice also. I would be happy to get a advice of You :)
Can these camcorders be used for filming skateboarding?
I've been trying to find a review on the FDR-AX100 that includes the quality of the audio. I recently purchased and returned my AX100 within 2 week because of an issue with noise in the audio. Specifically, while using the zoom rocker, zooming in or out fast, you get the servo noise recorded. If you ramp up the zoom speed it goes from a slight hum to a loud hum, relatively loud, not acceptable for most situations. I called Sony and was advised that it was an inherit problem. But nobody seem to be complaining about this. Have you checked the audio while fast zooming, especially while monitoring it with a headset? I'm wondering if it was my camcorder, since not one review mentioned anything about the servo noise.
You kee harping about the steady shot being inferior on the AX 100. Well I have an AX100, and I did a review on the AX33. I found the steady shot on my hand held shots every bit as steady on the AX100. I found my driving shots, with both the AX100 and AX33 mounted side by side on a tripod shooting through the window of the car actually better on the AX100. When the car bounced, you could see the dash of the car bouncing up and down, but the picture was rock stable. The AX33 got motion sick, and made me feel like I was looking though a bowl of jello.
I agree that the picture of the AX100 is superior, as are the stills, but that would be expected due to the better lens, and sensor, but I do not agree that the steady shot is any better, and if it is under certain conditions, it is not that much better. The 100 does a fine job.
+12voltvids ...the system in the 33 was more for situations where it is being handheld...I got the same type of thing on the CX 430 with low bass music...you have to turn it off and use the 2nd option which is what is on the 100...
+deadendkid1968 I do handheld shooting all the time, and never have an issue keeping the camera steady. Mind you for tracking shots I still reply on a gimbal, as nothing beats that, and I have tried the 33. It has some advantages as far as size goes, but I will take the larger sensor any day.
+12voltvids the 33...the gimble is built in...thats the point...the AX100 is not as forgiving...
+deadendkid1968 The trade off is of course the picture quality. The 100 has a bigger sensor and a better lens. When shooting 4K I think emphasis should be on the picture quality. As far as the steady shot goes, I have used both, and they are not that different, at least not during the time I had a 33 to play with. With the software upgrade on the 100 to record at 100Mb the quality is even better. Now if they could make the 100 record 4K at 60FPS there would be puddles on the floor I would be so happy.
The other one has a built in gimble...not even close...you can shake it literally and it will not have shaky video...
Hi, i have a question, the battery that use this two cameras is the tipy V, i had a battery type H, i sthis battery compatible with the ax33?
Will the latest AX100 firmware (3.0) control an ActionCam?
When you explain how (much) better (more detailed/less noisy) is the image quality of the AX100, is it applied only to low/lower light situations? When there is enought light, doesn't the AX33 perform as great as the AX100? My impression/experience was that on bright daylight an 1"-sensor RX10, a m4/3 sensor GH4, an APS-C sensor A6000, and full-frame A7 all have more or less the same image quality at equvalent focal lenght and aperture. What do you think?
Miklos Nemeth: I think so,I used hc9e and the picture is so good
thanks
The AX 100 is incabable if delivering a clean HDMI out in 4k to an external monitor. So its a complete no go for me to start with
Great video, could you confirm that the firmware update allows 'recording' with clean hdmi out on the FDR-AX100? Would like to see a video on that too to output to a larger screen or to SSD external- Thanks,
Robert Jung I use an external monitor with my FDR-AX100 through the HDMI connection. It works well. None of the display items show on the ex. monitor - only the video being shot. However, when you shoot 4K, as soon as you press record, the ex. monitor goes black. It is mentioned in the owner manual, and there are no settings that can be changed - other than switching to 1080p or whatever. Also, when the camera is set to 4K, you cannot take photos unless you put the camera in photo mode. Overall, I really like the FDR-AX100. The video it makes is beautiful. It has enough manual controls that I can shoot however I like. And it has great auto control, if that's what a person wants.
I got my FDR-AX100 at Best Buy. It was an open box, but there was absolutely no difference between this one and a new, unopened one. I paid $1,036, so I was pretty excited about that. I think the 3-year warranty was about $300, but I know I'm covered for just about everything. And in 3 years it will be time for a new camcorder anyway.
There are PLENTY of FDR-AX100 sample videos on YooToob. Remember that YooToob will screw up the videos with their compression, or whatever it is they use. But you can still get a good idea. I can say that the videos I've shot with it are absolutely beautiful. The comments I've gotten about them attest to that. No, I don't post them on YooToob.
How is the 100 compares to the AX53?
Ha Ha - after 5 seconds, all I could hear was "Just a bit outside!" Good video, though.
Hi I just bought the AX 33 and there is a problem that I have that I'm just not able to solve. I've attached a Rode NTG2 external mike to the camera. However I keep hearing a high frequency buzz in the background. Now i've individually tested the mike, the camera and the cable with another mike/camera/cable. I interchanged the mike/camera/cable in all the possible permutation and combinations possible and there seems to be nothing wrong with either the mike, the camera or the cable. However together there is a problem. I dont get it, Are there any compatibility issues between the Rode NTG2 and the AX 33 ???
Please advice
it might be a radio interferrence, any mobile devices could be a problem lying around. Also when i filmed inside a car, for some reason the radio antenna in built in the car gave me problems. External rode mics usually pic up those. Filming outside was without any problems.
The ax33 is my next camera👌👌
What is the latest firmware update and how do I know if I have it?
I started out going to our local Best Buy to purchase the AX33 but they didn't carry it at the time. The salesperson did tell me that they had a returned AX100 and they ended up selling it to me for basically $1,000 so I think I 'lucked out'. Now I really need to find some good tutorials on how to use all the features it has. I wrestled over the stabilization differences but went with the AX100 anyway. Since then Mercalli Pro 4 from ProDad has released a great stabilization software package at a very reasonable price that I use to after recording my handheld videos.
does ax33 have peaking?
How on earth can you rattle on for a half hour and not compare the cameras ability in real time. Geez I can read the manual myself. I can't run these through their limitations.
What memory cards would you recommend to get the highest quality video out of the AX100?
+Guillermography Studios SDXC U1 - U3
I have the Sony AX100. If you're using HD, it's simply perfect. Videos are clear and very smooth.
Everything works perfect except when you try use 4K. The minute you switch it to 4K, the screen becomes VERY SLOW and laggy. You will notice is even before you start recording. The videos you record will be clear but any kind of movement in the video such as someone moving or a waterfall and so on would be VERY LAGGY. I couldn't find a setting to fix that whatsoever. I tried all the different settings. I displayed vidoes directly from camera to 4K TV, after burning them into Blu Ray discs and using UHD Blu Ray player, through computer, every possible way. Still the same problem. The 4K videos on this camcorder are simply too laggy and not worth the price NOR the size of the camcorder.
Can you show ax100 vs ax33 in night time or lowlight compare, thank you so much!!! : )))
very nice review overall sony fdr-ax33 is better then fdr-ax100 if i use camoreder as a home film maker not a prophessional film maker i am awating sony fdr-ax33 PAL system for INDIA. upload other comprision video for knowledge base and enjoy thanks
shashi singh from INDIA
+Shashi singh ...not really so...I do sports and the 33 has it all over the 100...unless you like shaky video...if you go handheld or even with a nice shoulder set-up...the ax33 is the way better choice...
Sold me on the AX33
Argh I hate you (for a good reason) lol. I had money saved up last year for AX100 and never got it because it didn't have BOSS. I was excited about AX33 til you started talking about how great it is! I can buy both but I'd rather stick with one for now. I'm starting a video start up but I also love mobility a lot with as little equipment as possible. Right now I use an old HDR520V, so either camera is a step up from 2008.
I'm leaning to AX33 for now, but would definitely like to upgrade to AX100 once my video start up picks up and I can have some more to invest.
Questions:
Do either of these have a hard disk drive or do you have to use a memory card?
Do both of these have apps and cinematone?
Can you change ev settings on AX33?
What do you mean by a dock for the ActionCam?
Do you have a video with side by side (video footage) comparison of the two cameras?
Thanks.
Jeremy from Cinemasins!
Guys, I got ax100 and it seems not strong AF (blurring, very slow) I don't know if any of a6100 or a6600 or Zv1 could match or give better image quality than ax100 because the lens in AX100 is very good.
I understand the sensors difference from 1 inch sensor all the way to Aps-c but still the lens in ax100 is very good (if anyone knows how much the lens cost of ax100? In equivalent to sony lens?)
Both Zv1 and ax100 is one inch sensor both same sensor but I don't know if zv1 lens could beat or same ax100 lens?
Do you think that a6600 or a6100 can beat the ax100 or zv1 with their own lens come with the body (in term of video quality)?
You keep complaining in mostly all ax100 video 👀 return it bruhh
@@dabking3611 oh haha because of reviews I have watched plus I have got once before I get it back again. I have found it is really good for the price 800$ comparing to other video cams. It has better battery, shoot in a very hot weather, price is good, I have just to turn to manual AF rather than auto. That was my only issue because I wanted human subjects without blurring moments.
@@aetrr that's awesome $800 dam lucky 😮 I'm buying ax100 soon 4k for $1000 sound about right for me
@@dabking3611 see a6600 brand new equal to a used ax100e that tells something about quality of the video and many other features. The only issue is the AF that is not very good in ax100 it will give you blurry seconds. What is your opinion!
@@aetrr I like the Auto focus on the Sony ax700 🤗 I'm thinking of saving a little more to upgrade
in spanish what is the best ax 100 or ax 33

I am disappointed not having clean HDMI on the AX33. I'd prefer recording huge 4K files of long takes of concerts, reviews, sports events on an SSD of an external recorder. The AX33 could have been my perfect 4K solution.
Miklos Nemeth What have you used in the past when recording concerts?
shawnbrennan1 I had a chance to experiment with AXP33 in a Sony show-room and I found that the AX33 can output clean HDMI, and using an external recorder is completely possible. I haven't tested whether the AXP33 can output HDMI while recording internally? Actually, it doesn't really matter in practice. I use Sony A5100 with Atomos Ninja2. The A5100 sporting a state-of-the-art huge APS-C sensor has far-way better low-light video image quality than the AX33. I am still hesitant to go for the AXP33. The only low-light capable 4K camera solution today is Sony A7S with Atomos Shogun, no other low-light 4K solution.
Miklos Nemeth does the ax100 output 4:4:4 by HDMI?
i feel camcorders are inferior forms of professional video recording, i feel they're still too babysat and too auto and would limit ones potential as well as cumbersome and finicky with the fixed lenses and cramped controls. i honestly believe something like a GH4 would be much better allowing much more creative freedom. but to each there own, and if you work better with one over the other by all means more power to you.
8k is close though.

You dissapointed me because you said "Everybody" and I went "Oh good, a 13 year old like me could try asking for one as a birthday gift." But then you said it was $1000. That means that camera isn't really for everybody.
