Man accused of stabbing woman at Point Defiance Park makes first court court appearance

The 27-year-old man accused of stabbing a woman walking on a trail in Tacoma's Point Defiance Park on Feb. 10 made his first court appearance in western Washington Thursday.
Nicholas Matthew, 27, is charged with first-degree attempted murder. The stabbing happened on a marked trail near Five-Mile Drive in broad daylight, around 1 p.m.
Matthew appeared in court on Thursday to be arraigned, but the court didn't move forward with it due to the prosecution requesting a mental health evaluation. In court, the prosecutor said according to Matthew's mother, he has been previously diagnosed with mental illness.
