  • MONROE, Wash. - Compelling home security video caught the moments a wild cougar ran into a Monroe family's yard and came within feet of several people, including a 2-month-old puppy.
The incident happened on Saturday when members of the Havener family were outside in their yard.
As seen on video, a giant cougar ran out of nearby woods and suddenly chased after the family's two cats. Immediately afterward, the cougar can be seen coming within feet of April Havener and her young daughter, along with their puppy.

Don't ever go outside without checking your yard. Don't ever leave your dog or cat outside alone! I'd be hardening my security for sure!

Healthy looking cat, weird how it only saw the domestic cats and not the chickens? Srsly, if it had been going for the chickens, it could have gotten one and gotten away. Guess all the different smells in the yard confused it, or maybe it has a vision problem.

Having experience living in cougar country that cougar will be back until there isn't any more food source. If it's a female it's a sure bet it has cubs which means there's going to be more cougars living in the area.
Besides cougars there's also bobcats, coyotes, foxes and birds of prey. Eagles in our area are known to hunt neighborhoods that have cats and small dogs. Their talons are scary sharp and they have a vise tight grip. They quickly swoop in and take off with your pet.
Currently in Oregon, it is over populated with cougars because they really don't have any natural predators so they are breeding, raising, and pushing out sub-adults out of territories at a fast rate. They train their young to hunt and will massacre many sheep, goats, calves in one night without eating any of them. It's called thrill kill and it is hurting small farmers all over the countryside. Recently, a local small dairy goat farmer lost the majority of her herd in one night. The herd was in a barn but it didn't stop the cougar.
There are thousands and thousands of acres of wild forest for those cougars to live and hunt but these cats have learned it is way easier to leave their habitat and go to a small farm and kill farm animals that can't get away.
And now that these big cats have had a taste for domesticated animals and pets they are boldly moving into towns and cities where it's easy living for them. There's going to be a point where their boldness will start attacking and eating children. These big cats are attracted to running things and will, at the speed of light, catch a prey by the neck and crush it. It only takes a few seconds.
Theses big cats look pretty, but don't let that fool you into thinking they wouldn't kill you in a heartbeat, because given the chance, they will.

But if they're NOT eating the farm animals, as you say, then they won't actually eat the children, they'll just kill them?

In fact, that dog's in danger, too, and should never be outside more than 2 feet away from an adult and on a leash. That cat's stealthy as can be and would have that dog in it's mouth and be gone before it could bark or anyone could let out a scream. Chickens need to be in a secure, predator-proof pen. All the time.

Wouldn’t surprise me if it comes back for the opportunity of an easy meal (the house cat, small dog, kids, the chickens) or whatever small critter scavenges around there. Best watch your kids and pets/livestock.

Just saying but never run from a predatory animal. You run the risk of making it run after you.

In general you are 100% right if you are out in the wild. But this was different and they were feet from their door. That being said, they were extremely lucky that the cougar got spooked and chose not to attack them as they ran to their door. It could easily have attacked them. Very scary.
