  • Closing the 2022 festival, we welcomed Jennifer Rubin of The Washington Post, Michael Steele who chaired the Republican National Committee pre-Trump, MSNBC's Ali Velshi, and former candidate for U.S. president and for mayor of New York and founder of the Forward party, Andrew Yang.
What’s wrong with U.S. politics today? Why is our country so polarized, and our fractured leaders so unable to get things done? As Yang said: “We have a political system that rewards problems getting worse and festering, as long as I can get you upset about it.”
Yang’s solution: Revamping how we vote through Open Primaries (thephiladelphiacitizen.org/ci..., which allow citizens to vote for candidates from any party in the primary; and Ranked-Choice Voting (thephiladelphiacitizen.org/ma..., which lets voters select candidates in order of their preference and ensures only the one with at least 50 percent of the vote wins. To see how that works, we can look to Alaska’s most recent election: fairvote.org/alaskas-ranked-c...

Ranked choice voting/nonpartisan primaries do not favor a certain party. They favor the best candidate for all voters.

Michael Steele's last point is actually what Yang is tackling head on by championing RCV and Nonpartisan Open Primaries. Until we change the way we vote, then it continues to be difficult to hold those in power accountable. Voting them out isn't always doable or realistic BECAUSE of the voting system in place. So let's prioritize changing the voting system!

While often categorized as a democracy, the United States is more accurately defined as a constitutional federal republic. What does this mean? “Constitutional” refers to the fact that government in the United States is based on a Constitution which is the supreme law of the United States.

Open to ranked choice NOT 3rd party. My one exposure was in Oakland CA. The winner was not a good leader. I'm w MICHAEL.Organize and conversation. I'd like national two party voting w no gerrymandering. None of this NOW as Trump is such an issue. I use libraries yet many can no longer afford data bases.
