  • Debashish Banerji, PhD, is Haridas Chaudhuri Professor of Indian Philosophies and Cultures and Chairman of the East West Psychology Department at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He is author of Seven Quartets of Becoming: A Transformative Yoga Psychology Based on the Diaries of Sri Aurobindo and also The Alternate Nation of Abanindranath Tagore, a book about his great grandfather. He edited an anthology about his great uncle, Rabindranath Tagore in the Twenty-First Century. His newest anthology is titled Critical Posthumanism and Planetary Futures.
    Here he discusses the cosmology inherent in what is arguably the world's oldest religious scripture, aspects of which are surprisingly modern. He points out that the Vedas share many Indo-European traits. So, the Vedic pantheon is similar to the Greek. He refers to hymns celebrating the use of a mysterious entheogen known as "Soma". He elaborates upon the role of sacrifice in ancient India. He also notes that this ancient scripture can be viewed in a psychological context.
    New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He has served as vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology, and is the recipient of its Pathfinder Award for outstanding contributions to the field of human consciousness. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities.

    ritual as the "dramatization of the internal practice", all ritual is "a dramatization of psychological processes" (19:36). . . re: the divine feminine, Aditi is "the supreme goddess of the undivided realm" and "there are goddess agents that work with Indra" (29:42). this is my second time watching this video, and I got so much more understanding from it this time, having learned so much in the interim (from when I first watched it maybe a year ago) about the history and mythology of ancient India. thank you to you both for this rich and interesting conversation!

    The Sanaathana Dharmi (aka Hindu) have their own calendars in which Time IS and all people and happenings are placed in it. This is unlike the western Gregorian calendar where one person or happening is located and time flows back and forth from that point. Having said that, Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Geetha declares, chapter 10, verse 22:
    vedānāḿ sāma-vedo smi / devānām asmi vāsavaḥ/ indriyāṇāḿ manaś cāsmi / bhūtānām asmi cetanā
    that is "among the Vedhaas I am Saama . . . etc."
    He also declares in BG-9.17: "I am the father, supporter, mother, grandsire of the universe; In Knowledge I am the Divine Om, Rg, Saama & Yajur surely . . . "
    Now according to all the Calendars followed by the Sanaathana Dharmis (Hindus), and according to the SANKALPA recited by every "Hindu" to this day and right across the globe where-ever they reside, this present 2019-2020 is the Kaliyabdham 5120. That is it is 5120 years into the Kali Yuga which is firmly placed by every ancient scholar as beginning from the time of Sri Krishna leaving his corporal body. The Mausala Parva of the MahaaBhaaratha says that the great war took place 36 years before the event of Krishna leaving this material world, say about 5155 years ago. If 5155 years ago Krishna talks about the Vedhaas, ( I will not even mention the Raamaayana here, which predates the Mahaabhaaratha by millennia, and in which too we find mention of the Vedhaas) then how can we date the Rg Vedhaa, which is the earliest Vedha, to around the middle of the third millenium BCE?

    Such a wonderful conversation. He is so well informed and articulate. It's been such a long time seeing such decent and knowledgeable discussions online. India has always amazed me and it's wonders never cease. Last time when I was there for my treatment i was really fortunate to meet an enlightened master during my stay at Dhanvantari center Coimbatore. Thi guy was almost unrecognisable as an enlightened man but was full of wisdom. He never told anyone or claimed that he was one, has a family, works for his livelihood and goes about just like any normal person would. He has not read the Vedas or the Upanishads but realised speaking to him that he is an enlightened soul since there was genuineness in him, clarity in thought and simple answers to all your deep questions, which was so fresh and made so much sense. Would definitely love to see such people on your show and listen to their viewpoint. I was indeed fortunate to have met him🙏.

    This is what Rigveda gave us too The Dawn Goddess was the Goddess of spring, involved in the mythology of the Indo-European new year, where the Dawn Goddess is liberated from imprisonment by a God , reflected in the Rigveda as Indra, in Greek mythology as Dionysus and Cronus. The abduction and imprisonment of the Dawn Goddess, and her liberation by a heroic God slaying the dragon who imprisons Her, is a central myth of Indo-European religion, reflected in numerous traditions.
    Ushas is a Vedic Goddess of dawn in Hinduism. Uṣas is an s-stem, i.e. the genitive case is uṣásas, whereby it connotes “dawn goddess” in Indo-European languages.
    Ushas is related to the Proto-Indo-European goddess *hausos-.
    Her cognates in other Indo-European pantheons include the Greek goddess Eos, the Roman goddess Aurora, the Lithuanian goddess Austrine, and the English goddess Ēostre (OE: ēastre), whose name is probably the root of the modern English word “Easter.”
    Sanskrit "uṣas" is derived from the Sanskrit word "uṣa" which means “dawn”.
    She is:
    1. The life of all living creatures,
    2. The impeller of action and breath,
    3. The foe of chaos and confusion,
    4. The auspicious arouser of cosmic and moral order, called :
    the Ṛta in Hinduism !!!
    She repeatedly appears in the Rigvedic hymns, where she is :
    - “consistently identified with dawn,
    - revealing herself with the daily coming of light to the world,
    - driving away oppressive darkness,
    - chasing away evil demons,
    - rousing all life,
    - setting all things in motion,
    - sending everyone off to do their duties”.

    What does it say to all of us when a channel focused on topics that are the leading edge of Knowledge and Discovery and we discuss the oldest concepts and the most ancient people we have ever known. I think it says that the truth is true no matter where you are in time or place, and there is a sort of peaceful feeling when I realize that these concepts are link that goes beyond time connecting all of us who has discovered this in a sort of quantum tether beyond dimensions.

    The Rg Veda mentions the Saraswati river which existed in Northern India between 12000 to 4000 years ago. The river died out due to tectonic changes. The Indus Valley Civilization and the Saraswati civilization were the same. The widely accepted “Aryan Invasion Theory” needs to be re-evaluated.

    5000 years ago the Vedas was written down by Srila Vyasadeva not because he was the only person who was knowledgeable in the Vedas but because he was the only Authorized person to preserve the Vedic Truths without distortion . To further ensure that the essential meaning of vedic scriptures may not be speculated upon , He created universities through his disciples known as Parampara's . There are four Parampara's known as the
    Sri Samparadaya
    Brahma Sampradaya
    Rudra Sampradaya
    Kumara Sampradaya
    These Sampradayas are present today in India and in other parts of the World

    I was reading in a Purana, a much later writing than the Vedas, had that Goddess Aditi ( co-wife and twin of Diti), as being married to the primeval sage Kashyapa. Aditi gave birth to the Gods, and her sister gave birth to the "Daityas", who possessed a lower nature to the Gods, and who always conspired to rise up and overthrow the Gods to take their places (often successfully).
    I always wondered if these "upstarts" were actually remnants of previous pantheons that got demoted or "declared redundant" and were a chronic "source of irritation" to the dominant culture.

    Another way of understanding here: Sacrifice is "Yagnya". Yagnya is Transformation of one State of Being to another State of Being. This whole of Creation/Manifestation IS only because of Change, where one gives itself up to become another, or allows itself to be Transformed. This is also the rituals of Yagnya, where Fire/Heat - Agni, becomes the instrument of the transformation or sacrifice.

    Contemporary physics calls this ~A law of the universal hierarchical resemblance~
    Nasadiya Sukta. Rigveda (10.129):
    There was neither non-existence nor existence then;
    Neither the realm of space, nor the sky which is beyond;
    What stirred? Where? In whose protection?
    There was neither death nor immortality then;
    No distinguishing sign of night nor of day;
    That One breathed, windless, by its own impulse;
    Other than that there was nothing beyond.
    Darkness there was at first, by darkness hidden;
    Without distinctive marks, this all was water;
    That which, becoming, by the void was covered;
    That One by force of heat came into being;
    Who really knows? Who will here proclaim it?
    Whence was it produced? Whence is this creation?
    Gods came afterwards, with the creation of this universe.
    Who then knows whence it has arisen?
    Whether God's will created it, or whether He was mute;
    Perhaps it formed itself, or perhaps it did not;
    Only He who is its overseer in highest heaven knows,
    Only He knows, or perhaps He does not know.
    -Rigveda 10.129 (Abridged, Tr: Kramer / Christian)[62]
    This hymn is one of the roots of Indo European way of deep abstract thinking

    Amazing revelation I just had. You are talking about the 7 Spirits (traits) in God in the Rig Veda, which is probably what remains from 'The Book of Enoch'.
    Aditi is the undivided, uncreated primordial Spirit of God (Jehovah) existing before any creation of the spiritual (solar) or material (earthly) realms.
    The solar gods are the 7 spiritual traits of God, of which the first 3 form also the Trinity, if understood correctly:
    - Mithra = Love (Warmth) = The Father = The Primordial Cause;
    - Varuna = Wisdom (Light) = The Son = The Primordial Effect;
    - Aryaman = Will-Power = The Holy Spirit and is a consequence(effect) of the first two;
    These 3 form the Trinity in God and the first two are spoken of as One undivided because 'The Father is One with the Son', as undivided Cause and Effect principle.
    For example the Sun emits warmth AND light as cause and effect, and one can't exist without the other.
    'The Household of God' through Jakob Lorber contains God's Wisdom where these principles are explained.

    Those ancient peoples had their own version of ayahuasca which allowed their rishis to "speak" with the spirit world. It is probably many thousands of years older than academics will allow, given the tendency of archeology to buzz anything over the side that doesn't agree with their current limited construct. And yes, it is a gift to the world.

    Rigveda. Book 4, Hymn 51: This Hymn is an essence of the human culture and civilization in general, not just Indo-European: for all of our cultures and Faiths foundation. This was likely the oldest text of serious meaning known to us. If not the oldest out of all. Ideas here are fundamental for all Indo European and human in general cultures. We should consider a possibility of this being written/composed much earlier, by the post Ice age authors from the tribe who restarted almost extinct humanity after the prolonged severe cold weather and constant drоught (10 thousand years long)..
    Frome east, the first light comes again from darkness,
    Restores the order:
    Lets the rays of stars to shine,
    The daughters of the sky,
    Whose ways are covered for mankind ..
    They come the same from east and spread
    All over, from one place,
    Awaken, when and where Law is King !
    They come like Lords, like Goddesses,
    The way the Cows walk in hurds
    They are the same together,
    Colored monotonous stars,
    They are so brilliant, so clean
    They cover ugly shades of darkness
    With layers clean and colorful of Joy !
    O Goddesses, please give us healthy Children
    Almighty Heaven's Daughters, give us riches !
    And we, awaken, under Your protection
    We`ll be the bravest fathers to the bravest sons !
    We give You gifts and sacrifice and turn to You,
    The Brilliant daughters of Almighty skyes,
    And we conjure:
    Please make us gloryous
    Тo be among mankind !
    The Gods, the Earth and Sky will give it ALL to us !

    Hi, Jeffery, I have been following the lectures since the beginning very very informative and empowering for young scientists like me who are venturing the fields considered taboo by the mainstream. I have a small comment, when it comes to ancient traditions of India we are missing the ancient Tamil culture in the south India and Srilanka which clearly predates the Harrapan culture(Indus valley) and there is clear archeological evidence in Keeladi and Aadhichanallur. Also, the works of literature by Tamil culture written by sages like Agasthiar who is the father of Ayurveda, Thirumanthiram by Great Siddi Thirumoolar were not being considered at all. The Indian government has always suppressed these evidence due to internal political reasons. I just want to bring this into your awareness hoping that you will do your own research about ancient Tamil culture.

    • @isaacburrows8405
      @isaacburrows8405 5 лет назад +2

      Although pre tamil people lived in those areas long before the harrapan civilization does not mean they were more advanced in any way. The thing that makes the harrapan civilzation signifigant was its unprecidented level of urbanization. Almost all of eurasia had some type of human presence during that time.

    • @MohanKumar-gj9th
      @MohanKumar-gj9th 5 лет назад

      Isaac Burrows the same unprecedented way of urbanisation is found in keeladi in the south. Also advancement in what sense ? I don’t think we are any more advanced than the we’re. C.W Leadbeter mentions in his book that ancient Egyptian civilisation has its origins from the people migrated from south of India via Sri Lanka.

    • @isaacburrows8405
      @isaacburrows8405 5 лет назад +3

      @@MohanKumar-gj9th I'm not denying the existence of an advanced south indian culture or that the indian government supressed research of it but I've reaserched both and the scientific community seems to agree that the indus valley civilization predated the south indian one by about 500 years. As for the egyptian connection C.W. leadbeater is far from a scientist.
      I know that archeology tends to ignore and supress evidence and I strongly suspect that the whole of indo-european cultural history has larger holes in it then we're led to believe. Unfortunatly all I have to go on is the scientific consensus.

    It's mainly a stereotype discussion on Rigved. Prof is just kowtowing Jeff.

    The key words in the Rig Veda are "Ekam sat" which translates to "Truth is I Am One," signifying the unity of existence.
    We can make the comparison with our own body.
    While we may appear to have 10 separate fingers and 10 toes they are in truth but a singular body.
    We can take it one step further however and reach the conclusion of Jesus.
    We are different in life for love.
    ~
    John 13:34-35: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

    Rigved is at least 18800 years old and maybe 1.7 million years old. The western estimate is wrong. I have done research and writing it in detail.

    Hi Jeff. I think ikebana would better complement your excellent interviews. You might create them yourself by "simply" letting go. Heaven and earth with man caught in the middle, spaciousness . . . ☺️

    Unfortunately this particular take on Rigveda is fragmentary, non systemic, actually very superficial . Not a word on RITA, nothing regarding Atman/Brahman construction, not a word on Asurs. This is bs guys.

    Why did not he recognize the influence of Greek philosophy on the Indian philosophy and the writing of Upanishad’s
    Greek from Bakteria ruled northwest India to the Gange river, they give the pholosophy to India which was something completely different from their old collections as well as breaking up of Buddhism
    Without the Greeks no Upanishad’s and no Indian philosophy

    Interpretation so far off from what the vedas really mean. Learn from a sampradayavit, to get the true meaning.

    Nothing means there was Something before Nohing was there. Refer - Aatmanah Aakasha Sambhutah.. Tat Tejo Srujatah.. Meaning Space was first created followed by Awareness. Hence Nasadiya Sukta mentions came out of nothing inclusing Space since Space was not created. Without Space nothing can exist.. Don't make stupid interpretations..
