One thing I do wish they talked about were the survivors, since they mention early on that while it’s deadly, it’s still possible to get it and survive. A reason schools and businesses like to keep mum who started an outbreak is because of the backlash. How much backlash would result if you had MEV-1, didn’t know you had it and survived?

@Kayla Pounds Or... it's far more likely we aren't getting a realistic death toll seeing as China has been dishonest from the start. In fact, the most realistic scene in the film was when the Chinese officials were trying to "persuade" Marion Cotillard's character to suggest the virus did not originate in China. If China had acted quickly and been so successful there'd be no reason to silence the press and make doctors "disappear".

The virus in Contagion caused encephalitis, which affects the brain tissue. Coronavirus affects the respiratory system. The Contagion virus is WAY worse. Also, in the film the CDC and the WHO are far too effective compared to real life.
@Chris No one. It probably won't mutate to a completely different disease vector, but it could get exponentially worse. Seeing as it is treated with antibiotics, many humans who eat meat risk having antibiotic resistance, which usually means the virus gets to spend more time in a host and that gives it time to mutate. Mind you, I'm no virologist. I'm just going by what I know from my science background.
The MEV-1 pandemic was a global pandemic caused by the hybrid Meningo-encephalitis virus 1. The novel virus was identified in Minneapolis, USA imported from a casino in China before spreading to other areas of America in 2011. The WHO declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) and assessed the outbreak had become a pandemic the same year. The pandemic caused 2.6 million deaths worldwide, making it the twelfth deadliest pandemic or epidemic in history.

The irony is in Hollywood Americas are intelligent and clever.
In real life some of them are as thick as cement. This last week with this pandemic a great deal of Americans were acting like they were also in an episode of South Park.

I believe behind the scenes the director worked really closely with the CDC about epidemics so it could be as realistic as possible.
"Sometimes, people can be contagious without even having symptoms." This and at least one other time do they implicitly mention carriers which as a subject is not touched upon in this movie. In fairness to the filmmakers though, the movie is already complicated enough as it is.
They talk about r naught! Here we are in an *actual* pandemic and most people dont have a clue about r naught of a disease

What's most interesting about that is the way the characters in China are like "you can't say for CERTAIN that it started in China" even though they pretty much had it nailed. If China (or anyone) would just stop worrying about their ego, we would have been on this all much sooner.

For those curious, COVID-19's R-0 is 5.7.
@CalvinV7 5.7 came from an early CDC report from mid 2020 in a study about emerging infectious diseases. However, Medscape research shows an R-0 of 1.4 - 3.9, ABC reported an R-0 of between 2 and 3 and the Indian Journal of Critial Care Medicine reported an R-0 of 1.5 - 6.68. So, just like everything else with this virus, no one seems to have a real idea.

Also, in the film the CDC and the WHO are far too effective compared to real life.
Chris but it hasn’t. And until it does, it is no where near the danger of MEV 1. But it also could mutate into something less.

The pandemic caused 2.6 million deaths worldwide, making it the twelfth deadliest pandemic or epidemic in history.
