The difference between the movie "Contagion (2011)" and the reality of Covid-19, is the deaths occurred quicker in the movie and easier to trace the "R Naught" (R0=Br). So it's relatable. In our time of Covid-19, it is slower and not as deadly. So, just as men didn't believe microscopic germs in the past can kill you or make you sick, decades ago.... history has taught us nothing.
For those that remember the release of this film. I'm currently in Australia and at the time I was attending university. At Melbourne CBD they had people in full hazmat suits handing out disinfectant wipes when people got off the train. That was 8 years ago and it was a really cool marketing strategy to get people excited for the film. Now theyre doing the exact same thing only its now the real deal. Theyre standing exactly the same station and spot handing wipes and washing down train carriages. I'm just waiting for someone to shake me awake.

It was still realistic enough that I find it the most terrifying thrillers I've seen. Always loved it since its release and in a way, I'm glad it's now getting the appreciation it deserved. Anyway, thanks for the vid.
I honestly didn't understand why it wasn't talked about more when it came out. Granted, I've always been a sucker for outbreak movies(zombies, real life stuff, you name it) but I always thought Contagion was fantastic, and truly terrifying. Thanks for watching!
I saw Contagion for the first time last year during my "best of the decade" roundup as I was minesweeping random well-reviewed movies I missed when they came out. I'm glad that through this video I could refresh my memory on the key bits without having to rewatch the entire movie again haha. Really cool to see your montage of all the accurate components, specifically the way the people with power/privilege use that knowledge for themselves, completely forgot about that! I could honestly watch an entire series of short videos on each of the ways something in Contagion came true with COVID-19. Great video, thanks for persevering through difficult times!
Even without the context of COVID-19 this is still a great movie to watch, easily one of Soderberg's best. Another fantastic job with the background work on the film and the topic as per usual, as someone who studies this type of stuff I can say you did a bang-up job.
While there's still a few of Soderberg's movies that I haven't seen, I honestly have yet to see one that I didn't thoroughly enjoy, and Contagion is near the top for sure. Thank you so much for saying so!
It's still really funny to me that how a film like this that didn't even get that much attention when it was released is finally starting to get much more attention recently bcoz of time we are living in right now. But nevertheless, I am glad that it is getting some love. 😅
I always thought this was a really great thriller, a terrific ensemble piece that gives you every viewpoint you could want for a situation like this to be portrayed in a movie. Definitely the perfect time to revisit it though xD
@@wednesdaymess712 Nah I wasn't talking about people like you and me who liked it even when it was released. I was talking about people who only recently watched cause of our current global situation. 😅
In this film society completely shuts down and fast. People are looting and not going into work. Trash isn’t being picked up. Electricity shut down. Only getting food from the government. We can see right now that was an unrealistic prediction.
So I think everything in the film is plausible, but definitely not necessarily a prediction of what we're facing. The virus in this movie is a lot more serious than COVID-19, and honestly that was kind of the point of the video for me was to show how different these situations are, while still encouraging people to take everything seriously.
I've been playing the phone app plague inc. For those who dont know you play a character of a bacteria or virus and try to eliminate life on earth. From what I've learned is if the rate of lethality is greater than the rate of transmission then you have a low chance of spreading it to other countries and eliminating the world. In the movie, the rate of lethality was too high to have spread to that many people. The app use to be free but apparently they are charging 99c to profit off of the interests during this crisis? I'm just guessing.
I remember watching this in health class being so fearful of viruses and germs and to think its happening now is making me even more scared lol hahaha ahhhhh...
Paper Cat No we’re not. The movie they were talking about like a 25% fatality rate, the current one is like 1.5 and likely actually far lower then that
holloywood love these film they like making film come to life. Now did bill gate know before how did obama know before did they watch the movie or have inside knowledge thats the question
How is it unethical? It's just a number that represents the data, and it's an important number to know. It will fluctuate but we should still be paying attention to it.
@@Ivanmaradonaaa The mortality rate of the known cases. There is enough knowledge to make an estimation. The testing-to-case ratio is different in Italy, therefore the number is influenced by that. When you mainly test people who are severely ill, you'll get a higher mortality rate then when doing widespread testing. There is much more elaborate data from South Korea, which acted phenomenally quick and therefore could test a lot more people, producing more accurate numbers. Not sure how ethics play into that, as this is mainly a statistical issue. An ethical issue is what the orange moron is doing right now in holding that number against economic expectations and essentially sacrificing those 2% for some imagined greater good.
Agreed! We should call it the carnivore virus. Not only are these diseases being created in the meat markets, but the entire meat industry is the number one contributor to global warming (surpassing fossil fuel). The destruction of the environment will result in the creation and spreading of increasingly dangerous pathogens. My dad and step-mom are always going on about how they want to stop global warming but refuse to even reduce the amount of meat they consume let alone go full vegetarian or vegan. People are such slaves to their taste buds, they are willing to risk death at the individual level (heart disease) or throughout society (pandemics) just because they think animals are delicious. It is fucking ridiculous!
True. Though I'm a firm believer that we can find a happy medium. I don't think the meat industry is going anywhere, but we can manage it in a way where these things don't happen.

top of morning solider
honestly the least realistic thing about this movie is how many people were able to find masks and gloves.
And no one hoarded toilet paper.
And hand sanitizer
And Jude Law wearing a full plastic covering with oxygen tank on his back just for walking around daily.
Watching in 2023..it was longer than months but hopefully we are on the right track now
I've come from the one year in the future to tell you:
It's still going on
We watched this in biology class in high school. I definitely need to give it a replay.

The movie in greece was 1 day ago
Amazing as always! Keep it up!
Thanks so much dude!
4 years later (nearly 5), we got through it. The virus still exists, but now we have vaccines.
I think all that Contagion missed was people hoarding toilet paper.

Giving a death rate for Covid-19 is imo highly unethical since we honestly have no knowledge about how all of this will end

It's mathematical statistics. Maths has no ethics or morals.
