I used to play cricket with the lead singer Tony & his younger brother Steve in our local park when we were younger. Only seems like yesterday.
Spandau Ballet is a British Band from the eighties New Wave era! I love Tony Hadley’s voice and the band has a very beautiful soulful sound!❤️❤️

@@robertmarriott6767 Both…actually!! New Wave was a catch-all phrase for music of that era after the punk rock era, including New Romantic, Synth rock, power pop, ska revival, etc!!

The singer is Tony Hadley and the band took their name from Spandau Prison in Berlin. The band's classic line-up featured Gary Kemp on guitar, synthesiser and backing vocals, his brother Martin Kemp on bass, vocalist Tony Hadley, saxophonist Steve Norman and drummer John Keeble. They came out of the punk scene and were the forerunners of the New Romantic movement. As they went on they moved into what you'd call "Blue Eyed Soul". The Kemp brothers moved into acting but pop back to music every now and then. With Gary actually just releasing an album.
Something macabre you should also mention about the Ballet part of their name. Apparently many years ago in Spandau Prison, when the death sentence prisoners were executed by hanging. The guards would call the frenzied reaction of the dead prisoner with his legs violently shaking as a Ballet, hence the name Spandau Ballet. How gruesome is that ?
actually Sade's boyfriend found their name in a bathroom stall, they chose Spandau because they liked how it sounded and ballet due to the music aspect

One of the top British bands of the 80s from Islington North London. this was their only uk number one single 1983 four weeks at number one and even one week at number one in the states. A classic. Glad to see you appreciating it

I really feel the need to make a statement here. This whole "reaction" video phenomenon is changing the music culture for the better. I'm a 51 year old, white man who has been around long enough to be witness to music trends. It used to be, back when the internet didn't exist, that radio was king. From the time of the invention of radio until sometime in the early 80s, any given radio channel played every genre of music. Everyone was exposed to everything. Then what happened was that someone came up with the great idea to create radio stations that only played one genre. You had classic rock, hip hop, country, adult contemporary, folk, and on and on. It seemed like it a good idea at the time because if you were in the mood for something, there was a channel for that. Problem was, the music industry began producing and aiming their products at certain groups of people. If you happened to lean hip hop, or country, or folk, you'd get pigeon holed into your little grouping and totally miss out on everything else. It got to the point where you'd get made fun of if you wandered outside of your genre. That's all changed now. These two kids here are watching a group that they would have never heard 20 years ago. And they like it. I've always loved this song. I'm so grateful these kids have the permission to love it anything they damn well please!

Damn I miss this era! I had to be around your age when this song hit. I think one of the reasons I watch reaction channels like yours is because its a real thing for me to watch younger folks discover & appreciate our music. This was Spandau Ballét. They were part of a short lived sub-genre of New Wave called New Romantics. I love watching you guys enjoying this.

When I was coming up in the 70's, rock was young, modern music was young, I had about 20 years of decent recorded music to listen to and it was hard to find at best. Now.... these kids have 60 and 70 years of music history and it is just a click away. How lucky they are.

I loved their music from the start. High school flashbacks for me. An overlooked song of theirs that I absolutely love is Through the Barricades. Can’t afford to pay to see you to react to it, but for the rest of the fans please give it a listen. You won’t be sorry.

Spandau Ballet were/are a British 5 piece band from North London that emerged from the punk/new wave era of the late 70s into the "New Romantic " early 80s. However,they became soppy and realised there's money in making soulful pop songs and dressing in dated suits.
Its a band, there were 4 or 5 of them from memory. This song was released in 1983, and for about 5 years after, it was ALWAYS the last song played in clubs at the end of the night. At least it was around the Est Midlands in the UK
Gary Kemp was the main song writer in the band and played Whitney Houston's agent in the movie The Bodyguard

The band featured brothers Gary and Martin Kemp, and vocalist Tony "Foghorn" Hadley. They were one of the first bands of the "New Romantics" era, and had a small cult following to start, before they became massive. Martin is now a middle aged heartthrob - he presents a Sunday morning TV show with his son, the (very hot!) Roman Kemp. I watched it this morning!

In case you are interested in what a Spandau Ballet is, a Spandau is a type of rifle that was used by the Nazis. When they would shoot their victims, the bodies would do a “dance” as they fell to their death and that dance became known as the Spandau Ballet. Awesome musical group with a horrific name. And you’re right, Tony has one of the best voices in pop music.

I noticed that nobody reacted to the hextagon shaped drums, so I'll point them out myself.

Simmons drums used MIDI technology which enabled them to be much more compact from normal acoustic drums. During the eighties they were everywhere and their sound is unmistakable.
I've seen a few people ask about them over the years. Very few acts use them anymore.
