Ford is lobbying to have CATL factory opened in Michigan, Trump apparently wanted this too. Their LFP EV batteries are Chinese tech, despite the composition was initially invented by US. Its Chinese partner is Changan, which made Mazda EZ6 and luxury EV brand Deepal.
GM is the largest foreign maker in China besides VW. Both of them are joined by SAIC, the biggest of all Chinese car makers, who also owned brands like MG, and has design studios and engineering centres in Europe. SAIC and GM also has joint venture brand called Wuling, which is quite a competitor in Asia.
Stellantis (Chrysler) has their own way, they decided to buy a random company called Leapmotor and owned 60% of their global operations.

The Chinese market is one third of world demand. The other major car making companies are split between America, Europe and Japan. Those countries account for half of total demand, but until recently, had almost all of the market. They can't compete with China on price, and if they wall off their own markets for domestic cars only, their customer base will shrink by 80% overnight instead of the 50% they have already lost to China. Chinese customers have stopped buying foreign cars from legacy makers, and the rest of the world will follow based on price. I don't see how many, if any, of the auto makers in America, Europe or Japan survive for another decade without massive government subsidies, and huge increases in both cost and price. At the same time, the rest of the world will enjoy newer technology and more advanced cars at a much lower price. Cars are the second most expensive purchase for most households. This will drag down the economies of the western world and put us even further behind Asia in renewable energy. What am I missing?

It only took Xiaomi around 3 years, starting from nothing to production of EV. Apple started a lot earlier on its Apple Car and wisely aborted its effort after Xiaomi debuted the SU7. All the legacy auto-makers should ask themselves why they could not do the same.

It's not a matter of cars, it's a matter of economics and income. There are many things that could be made cheaper when sourced from overseas. What is at stake is not just cars, it's the economic income and jobs that are supported by this large scale manufacturing activity. Always remember, you cannot import unless you have the export income to pay for imports. Yes, due to prudent and targeted investment in the Auto sector, the Chinese have moved ahead in Battery Technology. They have done this with government targeted investment together with commercial innovation and technology from the west. It will challenge the idea that a government should let the free market reign and not guide commerce by picking winners with a plan for development. It is often said that if you fail to plan, you will plan to fail.

Xiaomi, founded in 2010, launched its first mobile phone a year later and became the best selling mobile phone brand in China in 2014, is now designing, manufacturing and selling competitive EVs. Apple plowed billions into their EV project for years and gave up, making Apple look decidedly and uncharacteristically beaten. Xiaomi and other Chinese brands have made huge and extremely rapid strides in competitive markets. This is a wake up call for top technology companies.

In the naming process of Chinese car brands, the higher the number, the more luxurious the model tends to be. The number 7 is usually associated with mid-to-high-end models, while 9 represents the top-tier models. Brands like AITO, NIO, Li Auto, Xiaomi, XPeng, Fangchengbao, Denza, YangWang all follow a similar naming convention. Many brands tend to choose numbers between 6 and 8 for their main models, while reserving the number 9 for future top-tier models.

That YU7 has a slightly odd styling vibe for me. I like where they're going, but the stills still feel a bit clunky. The real question for me is what their secondary market plan is for these EVs. If the price is already so low, is the plan to give them away in the secondary market? If that's the case, there will absolutely be no market for new cars in the entry market in 5 years. Even with extraordinary import taxes in the U.S., these used Chinese EVs will be cheaper than anything in the market.

Hi Sam, you are estimating competition and branding is only based on price. This is not the case at all. So yes China will take lots of market share because of the quality /price they offer, but ask Toyota /Lexus or Hyundai /Genesis about how long it takes to build brand trust, and even longer for brand sex appeal. Porsche will stay, and if VW use price to compete they will suffer. But BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lamborghini, and Porsche don't compete on price.
