I get chills each time i hear this, i have not heard a song emote so much pain and self torture like this. I feel this guys pain through the lyrics, music and vocals. Haunting.
I'm hearing it for the first time, after finishing Mikel's amazing memoir and wondering about this song, and knowing a bit of the story behind it. All the feels.
Flipping channels 14 years ago and landed on Dave introducing a band named The Airborne Toxic Event who I never heard of. The song and the performance gave me crazy chills. Fast forward 4 months and my wife and I fly to London from North Carolina to see them perform at KOKO. At least 15 times after that in 7 different states. I’m in awe of this band and the music they make.
This is my favorite Letterman tune ever , his reaction is classic.. he knows they nailed it and he doesn’t really know what to say, awesome live tune!!
I like how the song has "feelings". The beats and tempo get faster and angrier as the story progresses. It fits in perfectly with the story. You don't see that often, very well done!!
One of those songs that you can play over and over as if you were reliving your past through these powerful n emotional lyrics. I think that's the recipe to a masterpiece...
Came back to revisit this after Hollywood Park and it still holds as one of the best live performances I've seen. I'm sure it must have been a treat for everyone in the audience who actually got to see this live. Such pure and raw emotion.
Poets and artists struggle to capture the wrenching, can't catch your breath, there's no tomorrow pain of being left behind. Mikel Jollett and this masterpiece captures that feeling as well as anyone or anything I've come across in a very long time. A classic.
I always cringe and turn off these music shows when I used to watch late night tv... but this one... i was mesmerized.... back before internet it wasn't easy to find and the I confused the band name... found it years later.... amazing song and performance
I know I commented on this a few years ago, but man it is as good today as it was then. A killer performance by these guys of a song that has oceans of emotions. Love the band's energy, and even the broken string fits right in with that. Thanks TATE and Letterman for that!
Absolutely Fabulous! These guys are going to be BIG!!! Love them! Heard them for the first time last night on Jimmy Kimmel show and started looking for the same version with the quartet. Love it. And I am an opera singer!
read his book hollwood park know exactly what chapter this came from. by far the best book i have ever read, it's on kindle too. i highly recommend. also i love his dad...coolest dad ever, probably saved his boys life!
I lived in Hell's Kitchen for 11 months and Letterman was half way between the library and my place. One day one of the security guys at the Ed Sullivan Theater stopped me and said that these guys sounded great great in rehearsal and I was up on the top row balcony for this! By the end I was pasted against the back wall in awe! It was amazing
This song will go down into history of being the best song of 2009.... Just saw them live, they are so fucking good and this song is on top of everything else
The only part of any other song that hits me as powerfully (I tiny bit more actually) is Blink 182 Adam’s Song official video start that at 3:04 You’ll see what I mean: I never conquered, rarely came Tomorrow holds such better days Days when I can still feel alive When I can't wait to get outside
i thought this was The Church when i first heard it on the way to Seoul airport on the military radio station. they didn't say who it was at the end so i googled "holding her tonic like a cross" and the rest, shall we say, is history.
And it starts Sometime around midnight Or at least that's when You lose yourself For a minute or two As you stand Under the bar lights And the band plays some song About forgetting yourself for a while And the piano's this melancholy sound check To her smile And that white dress she's wearing You haven't seen her For a while But you know That she's watching She's laughing, she's turning She's holding her tonic like a crux The room suddenly spinning She walks up and asks how you are So you can smell her perfume You can see her lying naked in your arms And so there's a change In your emotions And all of these memories come rushing Like feral waves to your mind Of the curl of your bodies Like two perfect circles entwined And you feel hopeless, and homeless And lost in the haze Of the wine And she leaves With someone you don't know But she makes sure you saw her She looks right at you and bolts As she walks out the door Your blood boiling Your stomach in ropes And when your friends say what is it You look like you've seen a ghost And you walk Under the streetlights And you're too drunk to notice That everyone is staring at you And you so care what you look like The world is falling Around you You just have to see her You just have to see her You just have to see her You just have to see her You just have to see her And you know that she'll break you in two
2024 and I still love this song. ❤
11 years later and it’s still an amazing epic masterpiece
I’ve watched in 100 times and I still get a chill
That string quartet, the female violinist, the lead guitar, the singing, the PASSION. Fark.
INNNNNNDEEED
My number one song of all time. Unbeatable
It really is!
This is one of the greatest live performances of all time
The fact Dave loved it tells you everything you need to know.
I get chills each time i hear this, i have not heard a song emote so much pain and self torture like this. I feel this guys pain through the lyrics, music and vocals. Haunting.
Douche
I'm hearing it for the first time, after finishing Mikel's amazing memoir and wondering about this song, and knowing a bit of the story behind it. All the feels.
I'm addicted to listening to this song. Like, I have a problem and I'm not gonna seek help
Same friend, found help yet?
Time for me to introduce you to "Gin Soaked Boy" by The Divine Comedy; you're welcome 😊

Some of the most powerful and visually haunting lyrics in the history of music.... stunning!
The storytelling is just so on point.
This band is so underrated and in 2021 i still love this song
Fucking awesome. That is all.
I like how the song has "feelings". The beats and tempo get faster and angrier as the story progresses. It fits in perfectly with the story. You don't see that often, very well done!!
The string quartet had one job and nailed it!! Love it!!
one of Letterman's top 10 live performances. Top 5 "angst/breakup" songs of all time. Anna is entranced. The vocals are so raw. Incredible
The whigs
Arguably my favorite version of arguably my favorite song of all time! The String Quartet was a great addition!
I'll hear it in 2024, and it's as beautiful as the first day I heard it at Matuschke on Bayern 3 - 2009!
This song and Mr. Brightside, man...
Still can't listen to this without a tear 😢 this song came out at the hardest point in my life I'll never forget it.
11 years and still one of the best songs to ever be "radio music"
I love that the Calder Quartet (with Anna's brother Andrew) played so brilliantly on this version.
Love love love. And the song was cut down for TV. Top 5 song for me
One of those songs that you can play over and over as if you were reliving your past through these powerful n emotional lyrics. I think that's the recipe to a masterpiece...
The music changes to match the emotions and, damn, it hurts. Amazing performance.
3:23 You know you're rocking when your violin string breaks.
It’s a reed string. Happens all the time but I get your point
LMAOOOO
@@ofalltrades7403 it's the bow's hair ( they have like 150 to 170 strands ). Happens all the time but I get your point.
One of the best written songs in about 10 years. Eerie, Angry, Perfect.
Still loving this band. Wish I could see another concert
2021 and just found this song and I can't stop listening
This song is so good; even after all the years, it still affects me viscerally.
this busts you up no matter how powerful you think you are
The best part was the sincerity of Dave's reaction. Nice job! :-)
Came back to revisit this after Hollywood Park and it still holds as one of the best live performances I've seen. I'm sure it must have been a treat for everyone in the audience who actually got to see this live. Such pure and raw emotion.
It's the art of feeling the music, my friend!
Such an excellent song
Never heard of them
Awesomeness!!!
You can tell both Paul and Dave were sincere in exclaiming they both really enjoyed that performance. The string section was into it big time!
Yes this one the great songs around, keep listening and listening not boring at all
i love the way anna bumps as the music goes. when i saw them last year, she went crazy with her tambourine and jumped into the crowd. it was awesome.
They're a sweet combo with that quartet, I love it.
I just have to see them, i just have to see them, live in concert !
Have you seen them in concert yet??!?
This track hits different
It hurts me SO much that Lil Wayne etc are top of the charts, whilst hardly anyone knows the brilliance of this band...
Epic...
Poets and artists struggle to capture the wrenching, can't catch your breath, there's no tomorrow pain of being left behind. Mikel Jollett and this masterpiece captures that feeling as well as anyone or anything I've come across in a very long time. A classic.
Can't deny it....Amazing poetry, great sound = Great band !
just try to escape the rhythm and the story !
I love this song - amazing narrative. We've all be there.
Probably my favorite performance of this song ever. The energy is just unmatched.
Probably the most excited Dave ever got reacting to a band
One of the best songs this decade. Such a fantastic band. Can't wait for their new album to drop in a week.
You know when David is Wowed
The best!
Lovely
Never heard of these guys until I saw them on Letterman, and now I can't get enough! BEST EVER BAND on Letterman!

I always cringe and turn off these music shows when I used to watch late night tv... but this one... i was mesmerized.... back before internet it wasn't easy to find and the I confused the band name... found it years later.... amazing song and performance

Nice to see the Calder Quartet - but I would've liked to have seen more of the drummer - he was working it!
Such a good song

I'm here because of the book too. Its hard to say if Mikel is a beter writer or musician. Anyway... what a performance!
Beyond words. Just beyond words.

has an ATE flavour to it.which brought me here

This group so awesome live. Love love them.
SOOOO effing amazing!!!
I lived in Hell's Kitchen for 11 months and Letterman was half way between the library and my place. Awesome song + live performance
Beautiful
this is great
Incredible! Can't stop listening and watching. Passed it on to friends and they love it too. WOW!
I think most of us can put ourselves in the position of loss.
Wow!!! That was friggin' awesome! Letterman doesn't usually give compliments, so I guess that's saying something!
Hey, this is where I “met” them!!!
Puts you right back in that moment of anguish.
This song will go down into history of being the best song of 2009....
Just saw them live, they are so fucking good and this song is on top of everything else
I have to come back to this video every month or so. Reminds me of times past and somehow keeps me right.
that part at 2:35 ... it's sublime. I feel infinte xP no joke.
The only part of any other song that hits me as powerfully (I tiny bit more actually) is Blink 182 Adam’s Song official video start that at 3:04 You’ll see what I mean:

Great band! So thrilled to hear they have tour dates again!
Did they end up getting in any of their dates before the pandemic swept through?
Love this song and this is the best version!!!
this song hit me hard when i was younger. older now, i'd prob be like ok good leave with him, he can inherit your problems..
this guy talks from experience and i can relate to him so much
so, so great. this version just has so much great emotion and feeling in it.
i thought this was The Church when i first heard it on the way to Seoul airport on the military radio station. they didn't say who it was at the end so i googled "holding her tonic like a cross" and the rest, shall we say, is history.
Saw these guys live a couple years back. Talk about an emotional concert. One for the books! Amazing band.
So devastating ❤❤❤❤
This is the song for my girlfriend and me. I left her for my life in '93. Left my wife for her in 2022. She is my one true love.
And it starts
Sometime around midnight
Or at least that's when
You lose yourself
For a minute or two
As you stand
Under the bar lights
And the band plays some song
About forgetting yourself for a while
And the piano's this melancholy sound check
To her smile
And that white dress she's wearing
You haven't seen her
For a while
But you know
That she's watching
She's laughing, she's turning
She's holding her tonic like a crux
The room suddenly spinning
She walks up and asks how you are
So you can smell her perfume
You can see her lying naked in your arms
And so there's a change
In your emotions
And all of these memories come rushing
Like feral waves to your mind
Of the curl of your bodies
Like two perfect circles entwined
And you feel hopeless, and homeless
And lost in the haze
Of the wine
And she leaves
With someone you don't know
But she makes sure you saw her
She looks right at you and bolts
As she walks out the door
Your blood boiling
Your stomach in ropes
And when your friends say what is it
You look like you've seen a ghost
And you walk
Under the streetlights
And you're too drunk to notice
That everyone is staring at you
And you so care what you look like
The world is falling
Around you
You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her
You just have to see her
And you know that she'll break you in two
Thank you for that!
