I recently got to see one of my favorite bands of all time LIVE for the first time... Talk about a 'bucket list' opportunity. They played nearly all my favs and it was amazing to see Gerard perform in person after all these years.
These are songs I've known for so many years... The ins and outs of how the melodies go... All the little singing nuances that I've become attached to over time... So hearing Gerard nod to my own version of nostalgia was incredibly meaningful. Man... did the band deliver.
This video was inspired by my recent live concert opportunity. I took footage of Teenagers live and we get to dive into the studio multitracks and go back and forth a bit between his studio and live approach. ....YAY :) !! Enjoy!!

This was my theme song in high school. I remember once I had a few friends over for my birthday, and my parents decided to have a nice marital dispute right in front of everybody. So I kind of retreated to my room with my friends, and we all just sat awkwardly. So to break the tension, I started playing the guitar, and singing this song. One by one my friends joined in and by the second chorus we were all singing at the top of our lungs. Little moments like that remind me how much joy music can bring us, and how it can bring people together.

I love comparing singers approach between live and in studio. Not necessarily in a “awe he didn’t do it right live” sorta way, but in a “ok so they dropped it a half step, and he’s singing this one note lower here to save his voice for the next line” sorta way. You should do more stuff like this 😁

So great that you got to go and see them live! I was fortunate enough to see them live earlier this year too, and it was an incredible experience. I always love the way you break down these songs, totally agree with the points you make about not being so concerned to hit the pitch- Gerard's ability to add character and personality to his vocals is part of what makes MCR so interesting- as usual, thanks for explaining how we can adapt this to our own vocals!

That's so cool that guys invited you to a gig after your video! Your explanations are very understandable for people who don't know enough about singing. I still believe someday you will make a video about the song Mama by mcr because i think there are many interesting things with the G's voice 🖤

holy shit your mcr videos are incredible! i’m approaching studying mcr more as a guitarist but hearing the breakdown of the vocals is still incredible helpful, especially against the other isolated tracks. your comments about the reverb and panning are also super interesting. honestly, it’s really nice to hear mcr taken seriously as musicians, i feel they’re often overlooked as a seriously talented band. and congrats on the show!! they rock today just as much as the 2000s.

fun fact: first, This song was recorded in the haunted house.
Second, This song is catchy (including the chorus) but the lyrics are referring to the school shootings.
third, the piano kicked in on the second chorus and the rest of the sections but you can hear clearly on the last chorus.
fourth, The bass guitar slides down Build up with the drums in verses.
5th, the vocal on the chorus with the word "Pose" is Ray Toro.
6th, you can hear the shaker, The other different percussions in the verses are buried in the mix. only the tambourine and the vibraslap kicked in at every chorus.
7th, the chord progression on the verse is actually based on the song "Woogie boogie".
8th, The fill before the chorus and before the solo is so complex and syncopated but Bob Bryar did a great job. Bob Bryar also plays the ghost notes on the snare while using the cowbell on the third chorus.
9th, there are edited version of this song (Especially the MTV versions) they censored swear words, Drugs and weapons on the 2 verses and every chorus.
10th this version is from Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock as an DLC. Guitar hero 2 did have the cover version of it.

If we're speaking of character and matching live and studio sound, listen to Pixies RockPalast 2022 live show on youtube. It'a a 2 hour show, they are in their late fifties and they sound exactly as perfect as in their 80's and 90's classic studio albums. Frank Black has never sounded that great live for the past several decades.

Absolutely love your videos on MCR, great one as usual! A few thoughts:
    1. The high background vocals ("pose") are probably MCR's lead gutarist, Ray Toro - he does most of their backing vocals live (except for screaming which would be the rhythm guitarist Frank Iero), and it's astonishing what he can do vocally while also playing the guitar (they do however switch up guitar sections for live performances so that it's Frank who plays melody and Ray can focus on the vocals). Take a look at Famous Last Words from AOL sessions (ruclips.net/video/QTX2U-sDeyU/видео.html) or Mama from 2022 tour (the Newark show on 9/21 was a great example of that, the "we all carry on" at the end that's sung by Liza Minelli in the studio version... just wow - ruclips.net/video/W1SwRfgeuVM/видео.html at 4:35 and onwards), or this section from Life on the Murder Scene: ruclips.net/video/x12pRZj9jFY/видео.html to get a taste of what Ray does for MCR vocals.
    2. I'm not sure it's completely fair to call this a studio vs live vocals comparison - there seems to be an enormous difference between Gerard's live performances back in the day vs this tour - he's hitting and holding high notes much easier these days, and while it's still very emotional, it seems almost gentle at times which was nowhere present before. I'd love to see you compare them one day,! The last show of this tour, Corona Capital in Mexico, was professionally streamed, so there are good quality recordings available that could be great for that - or it's been hinted they'll come out with a live album next year :)
