I've been waiting awhile to get my hands and ears on these. Gerard Way is one of my favorite vocalists around today and I always feel like I can't hear quite enough of him in the final mixes they put out. But now... I get to turn him up and isolate him!!! :)
Join me as we study Gerard's approach, all the amazing vocal and band nuances you can only hear when you study original studio multitracks!
MCR's copyright owners will allow this video to remain on youtube but there must be consistent use of frequent stops. No one part of the the song in part or in whole can be played without frequent interruptions. This is partially why I stop and comment and sing during and after key sections that I play. @@sean_mccadden They undoubtedly had multiple offers to convert it to a musical. The lack of a product suggests that they said: "No, that wouldn't be very good." In a Led Zeppelin "we're not releasing singles, singles aren't cool" kinda way.

I've always thought about this song as MCR's Bohemian Rhapsody. I think it's totally fair to make that comparison as The Black Parade is a song for the ages. The difference is how accessible they are. I feel like MCR never will get the mainstream appeal that Queen has and that's why it can be a controversial opinion.
to add to that controversy I personally think this song is better than bohemian rhapsody

Dude my chemical romance has so many amazing lyrics, melodies, riffs, solos, bridges, choruses, it's insane. I know almost every song of theirs on the guitar (Franks part), along with Gerard's lyrics

maybe about a man who realizes he was an asshole in life when he gets diagnosed with a deadly disease and tries to make things better while at the same time descending into depression and dealing with ptsd. this could be the song where he realizes (with some changed lyrics) and it could get a triumphant reprise at the very end to close off the show.

I'm totally with you in the Queen and MCR reference you made, Gerard's teatrical interpretation is the key to naturally develope all the textures he make with his superdinamic voice. Thanks for this great video, I love this album too, specially this song and of course, MCR, one of my fav bands. Keep it up, Chris!
Gerard has said he was VERY heavily influenced by Queen for this album. Both with the musical style AND the concept story of themes and visuals throughout the rest of the album.

Hearing these stems is like listening to this song for the first time again. Gerard truly inspired me personally to create and perform with emotion. He doesn't do it for the sake of theatrics or "artistry," but for the weight that it carries and the story that it tells. Chris dissects it perfectly, love to see it.

Wow it feels like a privilege to hear this. I’ve always been a huge MCR fan and of Gerards voice. Would love to hear breakdowns of other MCR songs, especially the older ones. I’d recommend listening to the podcast Gerard and Mikey Way did with Kevin Smith (it’s on RUclips somewhere) where they break down WTTBP line by line and about writing it, it’s really fascinating. Apparently the section at 19:56 was originally going to be sung by a choir of young children, but it sounded way to creepy haha, so Gerard just went in and recorded them all himself.

i took notes: At the beginning of the song he is singing very clean, and boyish, but he gets more aggressive later on, letting out the aggression that was "trapped" inside in the beginning. at the end of the song because of the key change he is forced to be a bit cleaner, and "happier" this is really awesome because the "carry on" goes from being desperate to a bit more resolved and confident. the final "carry on" goes from full on screaming to full on choir boy. making the song come full circle. impressive.

I see this album as a love letter to Queen. There are so many classic 70s influences. The song. Mama reminds of the trial section of The Wall (Pink Floyd). There moreno listen the more I find.

I remember playing the first song on The Black Parade (The End) for my guitar teacher when I was in high school and he immediately brought up The Wall.
i literally fall in love with Gerard voice for years, he has such a unique style and emotions that he puts in his lyrics. also love your videos, there so many helpful information that i get. it`d be interesting to know some mixing and mastering stuff

I love this analysis. Your 'How to Sing like Gerard Way' video is one of my favourites, because you absolutely nail some of the things he's doing- while getting across the importance of energy and character singing. My own singing has improved as a result of your videos no doubt.
I saw MCR live around a month ago, and they are truly incredible live- for all the reasons you mention. Your note about the guitars reflecting the energy and feeling of Gerard's vocals really pinpoints something I couldn't have explained myself, and something which is so specific to their music. Thanks for all your effort on this video!
Gerard's musical career started out with playing Peter Pan in school, so the character element is spot on.
Chris, your analysis absolutely blew me away ! This particular MCR song has literally plagued my thoughts so often over the last 18 years that I would re-visit listening to it every 4 to 8 months and try strip down all the elements that make this song definitely on the level with Bohemian Rhapsody... as a true masterpiece of emotional artistic expression. I remember in 2006, when I heard first heard Gerard, I honestly couldn't tell if he was British, his vowels are so open, yet he still has amazing diction. It's like your ear is hearing vocals for the first time where a performer is doing things that just don't make sense. His vocal timing jumps all over the place, with a dramatic flair that pulls you in, sometimes slightly ahead of the beat, other times syncopated, other times behind, and then literally hits 4 to five eighth notes with robotic precision all while somehow breathing in between. I had to satisfy myself since I knew this track was done in the post ProTools era that he was singing many of these lines together while breathing, so I would play the SNL version of Black parade and even though he obviously can't sing all the vocal overdubs (especially at the end of the song); he is spot on live ! All that amazing character in the studio version is right there on display. He is one of the greats, band compliments him well also, he in the Rob Halford of alternative Emo Rock. Like Fredie he is not just a singer, but an actor who is expressing vocally what he is feeling, and that scene can change on a dime. We are just along for the ride, hoping to extract some small amount of his genius so that we can apply it, and maybe imitate it; hearing it makes us yearn for more, so eventually we want to live it.
Freddie Mercury is one of Gerard's biggest influences!
This was seriously cool, honestly something that I didn't think I'd ever hear. From listening to this song so many times there are things that I thought I heard and always sort of pictured how they did it. It is so crazy to be able to hear everything seperately and confirm (and refute) some of my theories.

This song is my generation's Bohemian Rhapsody. I still remember where i was when i first heard this song, as a freshman in high school.
This made my night honestly. Getting to hear the individual tracks and such just adds so much to this masterpiece of a song. The amount of depth is staggering with how Gerard crafted a magnum opus of an anthem. TBP really is an album you only see once in a lifetime.

I had the pleasure of seeing MCR in Oakland the other day, and it was nothing short of fantastic. Not only was it an incredibly energetic, engaging show, but Gerard's belting frankly seemed better and healthier than it did when he was in his 20s.

I'd love to see you do a comparison of Gerard's vocals during Black Parade/later albums and earlier stuff like Bullets, before he had vocal training. Kind of a side-by-side of breath control, pitch control, any other differences that jump out at you. I really enjoy your videos, thanks so much!
You are a very interesting presenter Mr Liepe. When you started comparing a loud breath and heavy onset to the foreshadowing that occurs in fiction like Back to the Future, I smiled. I think that a different perspective is often valuable just on it's own, because you never know what ideas you might stimulate in someone watching/listening.

Just what I was looking for. Thank you. I've been trying to explain that the vocals have layers and that there are transitions and key changes, but some of my friends don't hear it, when I think it's obvious when it happens. Every single band member is doing something incredible (like the drummer). There are even other instruments too, especially the triangle that add even more layers to the song.

There are few things that rival Bohemian Rapsody but this is completely equivalent! Gerard is a master, not just musically but in all forms of art & creativity!! (As are Mikey, Frank & Ray too) this whole album is absolute genius!! 💯

I love how he increasingly sounds angrier as he gets to "to join the Black Parade." Like he's angry about what the "father" is making him do. Being the "savior of the broken" is a heavy burden.
such an amazing video! MCR is my favorite band and Gerard is probably my biggest role model. Thank you for the depth and detail in this video. especially when you were talking about his desperation and sighs in his screams, not only do they sound more natural than blowing your voice out, but cleaner. He sometimes reminds me of Luke Skywalker in his facial expressions and his character(s). I'd love to see a similar video from you on "This is how is disappear" his vocals in that one are insane

This are STEMS, not multitrack. This come from the mixing session. It was mixed by Chris Lord-Alge. This is mixed from Pro Tools passing through the Sony 3348, but not straight from the 3348. Chris uses the 3348 to archive the summed multitrack. He sums tracks inside Pro Tools to come up together in stereo pairs on his console. For example, the song may have 12 single tracks of background vocals and he will sum them to a pair on the console. The 3348 will have that pair also. He brings pro tools sessions of 100 tracks down to 40 on the Sony and that is what is on his console. Great video!!
Here's who plays what:
Gerard Way on vocals, his brother Mikey Way on bass, Ray Toro on lead guitar & backing vocals, Frank Iero on rhythm guitar, Bob Bryar on drums (left in 2010). And I think either Rob Cavallo or Jamie Muhoberac on piano. Not sure about the horns in the back.
This entire video was an experience and the imagery you put to each part just gave me a whole new perspective on this song

It was interesting to hear the “sigh” approach described for The vocals. I can hear some similarities to it with some black metal style vocals. This makes sense with some vocals Gerard recently contributed to a project with Ishahn.
I love MCR and I love to sing and I’ve been working on my singing and trying to get better at sounding like him because I love singing their music and this video was SO helpful. Literally love this and thank you for all this help !!

The singer from In Flames does a similar thing to Gerard where he layers his voice but using vocal fry and creates almost a choir of screams but melodic, i recommend the song “Alias” or “the mirrors truth”

the "abandonment" thing I discovered in practical recording means to engage false cords when singing and overpronounce the vowels. Really open and it mimics what Gerard does in most of the songs

I love that you mentioned the octaves in the guitar, because that is MCR signature.
In his vocals I can hear a quiet kid who has been given a big burden by someone/something and he is screaming this sadness and desperation out. Thats why it starts innocently, then he switches to a desperate, almost crying person (which he also sings about ["im just a boy", "im not a hero"]) and then at the very last note he switches back to a quiet, backed out boy. Its very dynamic and its very clever and its much more complicated than I presented in my short comment. Great video, definetly will be checking out your vocal courses.
I've heard interpretations that the opening is the Patient singing and then when Gerard changed to VFS to repeat the first 2 stanzas it's the Parader who then takes over the rest of the song. It makes a lot of sense if this is the Patient finally succumbing to his illness and the Parader finally giving him some sympathy because of the ending of it all.
Is it weird that I can identify which part of the song it is just by looking at the wave forms?

Amazing analysis mate. You should check their song "Early Sunsets Over Monroeville", it has an impressive vocal performing.
The theatrics on that one are just beautiful. His vocal performances are always about storytelling, and this is one of the most beautiful examples.
When they played it live back in the day, Ray would take over all the really high notes as the backing vocalist.
I think Gerard started singing those parts in 2007 tho. He has since then.
Also notice how during the outro, as gerards voice gets more screamish and dark, the guitars actually start getting hopefull and uplifting.

Hey Chris. HIGHLY recommend doing something from The Mars Volta, Cedric's voice is absolutely amazing, I think in a way his voice is similar to Gerard's as well. The band just came back after a decade as well. Lovely stuff as always!!!

Yes I would compare them to Queen. They are amazing. Gerard's voice is so expressive, his movements and expressions just enhance all of the feeling he is trying to convey.

I really wasn't a huge MCR fan, figured they were part of a fad in the early 2000's, figured they have some good songs, but figured nothing special, until I heard "Welcome To The Black Parade". Immediately Bought the album, fell in love with it, said to my friend we are going to see this band, this is amazing. then bought the album again at hot topic they had the black velveteen box special edition, then bought the vinyl. Great band, Great album lyrically and musically. They nailed it. They will never top it!!!!!!!
I would have never heard the sigh going into "when I was a young boy" ("huhwhen") leading into the first chorus without the isolated vocal.
