    You can also use it with a wet brush so you can have more control over where it's applies, especially comes in handy on miniatures.

    I've been using the liquid Flimo for about 6 months, and I love it. It drys really hard and nothing, (and I mean nothing can move it!). It drys clear and I've used it to coat, fill and to reinforce clay items with no issues whatsoever. You can also mix small amounts of pastel or clay into it and stir it to either a smooth fondant thickness, or leave it chunky. I used it on my Gingerbread House as snow, it looks really good. However, it's quite pricy, and you don't get a lot for your money, however, it goes far depending on what your making. I always turn to it when I'm working clay as it's never let me down.

      Hi Nicole, there are so many wonderful things you can do with FIMO liquid. Basically your FIMO and TLS are the same except that the FIMO is more translucent after baking. Not only can you mix it with caulk pastels to color it but you can also use oil paints, eyeshadow, and powdered food coloring. I have even used different spices(cinnamon, clove, turmeric), instant coffee, and oil pastels. As long as you don't mix it with a water based color there are lots of different things you can use to color your FIMO or TLS. I have even mixed it with sand and baked it, which creates a wonderful effect. You can paint it on to a printed picture and put it in a cameo. After you color it you can even paint with it. In case you didn't know Kato Polyclay sells it own line of colored liquid clay, and Sculpey just came out with gold and silver colored TLS. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask me. I've been doing this over 20 years so I'm full of information. Take care, Dee😊

But I’ve gotten spider mites and Mealybugs. Plus rot and other issues . I want to make them so realistic that one can’t tell they’re clay . Can I color white polymer clay by mixing the pastels into the clay instead of brushing it on top of the clay?

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  4 года назад

      You can but chaulk pastels are not that concentrated so you may need to add a fair amount to get any sort of solid color, which could change the consistency and make it more crumbly, if you use too much. The other thing is that it tends to make the clay look speckled. You should also know, that if you mix chalk pastels into translucent, you will get a truer color than if you mix it into white. You can definitely mix them in, but you just may get a different result that you think, so make sure to do test strips before using it for a large project.

    Can i apply pastels and leave the raw clay for days while i continue working or would it make it brittle the longer it stays on raw clay similar to leaving clay sitting in cornstarch? I know cornstarch is more of a bowl's worth but i'm still wondering if it would do the same thing even though there's far less of the pastel on the clay.

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  Год назад

      That would really depend on how much pastel you are mixing in, but if the pastels are mixed in, it isn't quite as bad as sitting on a bed of cornstarch, which would pull the oils/plasticizers out of the clay. With the pastels, being mixed in, they could pull the oils into the powder particles, but they would still be in the clay. Probably just remixing/conditioning the clay would be enough, if your clay/pastel mix had been sitting for a few days. Hope that makes sense.

    • @citrusbutter7718
      @citrusbutter7718 Год назад

      You could bake thin sheets flat and then use a super sharp pencil to draw the gear on the baked clay and then carve the gear out with an exacto knife after and then wet sanding the edges. Put the finishes on like silver, bronze, or gold acrylic paint and then seal it in with a water-based sealer or something similar. I find that for complicated shapes like gears and other stuff making it first in raw clay makes it look goofy like a child made it because it usually sculpts wonky. The baked clay will be soft enough to carve and make for a more professional feel.

      Chalk pastels stick better to raw clay than baked clay because the clay is stickier when raw. There are times when you may just want a very light dusting on baked clay (like putting blush on the cheeks of a doll), but in most cases, it's done on raw clay.

      If you brush it on before it is baked then it will bond with the clay and may not even need anything to seal it in. If you do want to seal in a powder, make sure it is not loose and then use an acrylic varnish or a polymer clay safe spray like Helmar Crystal Kote Matte. A fixative spray will most likely react with the polymer and make it sticky over time.

In other hand it depends on the amount of spray as it has to be done sparingly.

    So why chalk pastels over acrylic paint? Is it just easier? Less messy? Better colors? Better blending? I'm new to this.

    • @DeeEll86442
      @DeeEll86442 9 лет назад +1

      Hi, acrylic paint is water based FIMO/TLS has a type of oil base. Oil and water don't mix without and emulsifier. Some people do use acrylic, but it depends on the brand and how much is added. To be safe it's best to use the chalks, mica powders, eyeshadow, powdered food coloring, oil pastels, and even different spices like cinnamon and such.

    Hey Cindy! I am not totally sure if you read these anymore but I might as well try. I am new to polymer clay and I was making a everything bagel. To make the seeds, I just used a blade to sprinkle shaving of the chalk pastel onto the bagel. However, after I baked it, all the color completely smeared into each other. I wanted to just make seeds and not have them turn into a gross mess. I use sculpey and baked it in 275 for about 25 minutes. Do you have any suggestions to how to stop this? Thank you!!

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  6 лет назад

      Hi SamanthaS, you should think of chalk pastels as powdered paint. it is not going to stay as individual seeds more like a dusting of color. If you want seeds you need to use something that won't bleed into each other like tiny balls of clay, mico beads, chopped or grated bits of baked clay, something like that. Hope that makes sense.

    Well! I've only watched 2 of your videos and I'm so excited. I am completely new to polymer clay and you videos are fantastic, so I will be continuing to watch and learn. You have so many videos, and I haven't had a chance to look at all of them so if there is a video on my question I apologise. But do you, or anyone else is might read this, do you do this as your business? Or just a hobby?
    I am looking to start an online shop and I am curious to see if y'all can make a good living (not looking to get rich😁)
    Doing polymer clay? Thank you!!

    Hi Cindy, I love your tutorials and experience. I have a question about my pastels. I notice that they darken/discolor when baked. I do not overbake and follow the baking temp instructions. Ex: I shaded a, soon to be, glazed donut with that bakery golden tan. I was ecstatic with the color and realism but after I baked my donuts, the golden tan turned to a medium brown. The color was totally off and looked nowhere near my original shading. This also happened on my eclair shading. 😥😥Do you have any suggestions as to why my colors darken?

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  6 лет назад +1

      I am not totally sure why your pieces darkened without seeing everything you used and how you did it, but it could be a couple of things. Maybe you used a clay that was quite translucent, so when it baked it actually darkened rather than the powders? Or perhaps the type of powders you used were not heat stable and ended darkening when put in the oven. You will need to experiment with some scrap clay and some different clay and powders, to figure what will give you the end result you are looking for. Another option to the pastels is to consider trying some eyeshadow perhaps in a matt finish. Cheap ones found in the dolor store can work very well on polymer clay. Or you can try things like cocoa powder and spices to shade your polymer clay baked goods. It will also have the added benefit of making your pieces smell nice! 🙂

      The video is actually quite misleading. Chalk pastels and Soft pastels are totally different. You may of been using chalk pastels which I suggest not to use. Soft pastels do not create these effects since they're made with mineral pigments. I once had this issue and soon switched to soft pastels which helped out a lot.

    • @citrusbutter7718

      @@jesusdag8585 So you're experienced. I have a question, say i'm working on a lot of pieces at the same time while pasteling a few, can i put pastel on and leave the clay for days with the pastel on until i'm ready for baking?
      I ask because i know they say if you use cornstarch to bake on, to not leave the raw clay in the cornstarch for too long because it will absorb the plasticizers in the clay resulting in it being brittle and fragile after baking. I'm wondering if a modest amount of chalk pastels would do something similar since they're both powder materials.

      Personally I love the matte finish and color range of chalk pastels, but you can definitely use eye shadows and pigment powders on your polymer clay. I suggest you play with whatever powders you have available and see what you like the most. Have fun! ❤

    Yes, please test the liquid fimo. Also, as I've asked in another comment, I would love to see a comparison between different brands of pearly clays when it comes to mica content, especially when applied to the mica shift technique.

I just really need to dye my clay. Also, can you link oil pastels in your reply if you have made it already and it would work for me?

    • @PolymerClayTutor
      @PolymerClayTutor  8 лет назад

      Yes, but you may find it doesn't have a lot of pigment in it, so if may take a fair amount of chalk to get much color. Experiment and see what you can make with it.

    Hello! great vid, thank you - may i ask if you ever add the colour after baking? as far as i know it's fine to do so? pastels seem to be so much finer & 'airbrushed' in finish that i'd like to try them on my miniatures, but i add so much detail in my sculpting, that painting soft clay will destroy it, so i need to do it last after baking, so i would need a nice thin, matte seal or glaze i think ? im so new to pastels haha, THE FEAR! :)

    hi! To varnish th clay, could I use clear nail polish?

    • @bryand6811
      @bryand6811 8 лет назад +2

      it's not recommended to use nail polish as a glaze, overtime the clay will yellow and the polish'll react with the clay, making it sticky over time.

      Sure you can mix it with clay but it can make the clay a little speckled. Also you would need to test how much to add to the clay without making the clay crumbly.

    Great videos. Please help me fix my problem. I sprayed a finished project with triple thick. Now it's sticky. What can I do to fix it?

    • @DeeEll86442
      @DeeEll86442 9 лет назад

      Hi, What's happening is the chemicals in the Triple Thick Spray are eating(melting) the clay. The only spray that I use that doesn't get sticky with polymer clay is PYM II. just look up the product on the Internet if you want to buy it. To remove the stickiness, you can try removing the Triple Thick by rubbing it off with a rag lightly soaked acetone. Just be warned this will remove(melt) the top coat of your clay. Lightly rub it until it's no longer sticky or almost gone, then you can sand off the remaining stickiness. This may or may not work depending on how thick your clay is, if it was fully baked before you applied the Triple Thick, or if it was a mixed media creation with lots of detail. I have used this method to fix creations in the past, that is until I learned not to use spray varnishes on polymer clay. Also, NEVER USE CLEAR NAIL POLISH! It also melts polymer clay. I hope this works for you. Take care, Dee😊

    I see this is an older video but was trying to find out about powder colours. I have some powdered colours that are just like the consistency of scraping the pastels but they are for colouring your home made soap. The only info is Neon Powders. I used to make soap but too busy with my polymer clay. Was curious if you thought it would be safe to use. I will test it out I guess and see how it goes. Thanks for your great video's.

      Testing a product first is always a good policy. My guess is that since the pigments work well with soap, they will probably work with the clay as well. I would be very interested in hearing about your results!
