You may have addressed this before, but I just wanted to add a tool that I have found works great for me. When I first started sculpting, I didn't have any shaping tools, and was on a budget. So I started making my own out of anything I could find. I stumbled upon knitting needles (my wife's failed hobby attempt). I had many to choose from. I found that I can make just about any tool needed, using a metal knitting needle, a file, sandpaper and pliers. I file the tips to make straight edges, which files easily because most needles are aluminum. Once I like the edge, I sand it smooth. If I need a tool with a curve I bend it with the pliers. This is a good cheap way of making a tool on the fly. Knitting needles come in so many thicknesses, that I really can get what I want. I'm constantly thinking up a new tool that I could use, so I pause my sculpture, make whatever tool I need, and then just start again. It's something I can't work without.
I also have a few tiny tools made from wire. Like loops and stuff are wonderful. And you can use any wire that doesn't have a coating on it. Florist's wire for example is often cheap and the one without a plastic coating is great for such things.
So glad to see your first efforts. I'm just starting in polymer clay, but have been a spinner for a long, long time. Hi 👋 I'm new here and have subscribed to your channel today! Wow I can't wait to get started with this new craft I'm going to start. You are the best channel iv found with so much information for a beginner and not knowing what tools I need. Iv tried some clay moulding but my short nails still get in the way and dent my clay! So thank you so much for sharing your amazing knowledge with us all. I really looking forward to seeing all your other videos now. God bless you abundantly in all things and much love from me too! 🙏 ♥️😘🤗🥰
Wow Nikkie thank you so much for the kind words! It means so much to me when people take the time out of their busy day, to share a kind message of gratitude. I hope you enjoy your polymer clay journey as much as I have. Have fun!
Hi Cindy. This is a great tutorial for a beginner, I was thinking of having a go at a new craft and was searching for some help with what I would need to start crafting with polymer clay, and I came across your tutorial on utube. It has really helped me alot with the basic things that I need ti get started, thank you so much. I was thinking of having a go at making some Christmas tree decorations, do you have any tutorials on Christmas tree decorations? Valerie.
Thank you Valerie for your very kind words! I do have some paid tutorials for Christmas Ornaments. Cindy, Thanks for all of your wonderful videos. They are extremely helpful. I am a beginner and I have a lot of baked clay that look awful. Is there anything that I can do with theses pieces besides recycling them?
I'm soo bummed..I have Horrible osteoarthritis in both thumbs..Mainly my right.. I heard they have foot pedals for some machines..but expensive.. what clay press..or lasagna machine is the best at a good price..I'm soo EXCITED to start..I have 2 packs of the clear, porcelain air dry clay I may use First..I also need ergonomic crochet hooks... love hugs and I'm now a new subscriber..I Appreciate you helping us.and making it exciting and look doable..hugs🙏🙏🙏🤟💯‼🤗
Maybe it is just my oven but I never had any luck with tenting. If I tent things then they do burn. If I don't use the tent they are just fine. Good video for beginners. I think a pasta machine for a beginner is wonderful. I got one a week or so after starting with clay. - Heidi
+BlackCat2 Honestly that makes no sense... unless your foil is actually touching your piece, which would cause hotspots. Try using a rigid pan like mine... make sure your piece isn't touching the foil and it will protect your piece. You've been lucky with the unprotected pieces... but you might not always be.
PolymerClayTutor welcome to my world. *smile* It doesn't make sense and it isn't touching the cover. I will give it another go sometime and try your suggestion but I don't hold out much hope of it working.
PolymerClayTutor I don't think so. It is an extra tall oven that can do rotisserie and what I am making is flat or really short. I would love to do something big - like 5-7 inches tall - but I worry about it.
Great video Cindy as alway I do have a question though. I love to make pendants and I am always forgetting to finish up the back sides of them. I think we are so focused on the fronts we forget about finishing them up. I am not sure if you have a video on that or how many ways there would be to finish up the back sides of things. Just and idea I always like these and come back often to re watch them.
Thank u so much for these tips and info. I'm just starting with polymer clay and I love it! I am now a new subscriber, I am so glad I found ur channel! I think u are great at instructing with clay, I'm enjoying ur videos very very much! So thank u so much 4 the help! I'm sure gonna take all ur tips and advice to heart, u seem to really know what u r doing, I mean u are a pro, but I love how u explain everything really well so thank u! Which polymer clay brands are ur favorite to use and what do u like most about those brands and which do u think is the best, in your opinion?
Thank you Amanda for the very kind words! As far as favorite brands, I Love Premo, Souffle and Cernit. But Kato Polyclay, Fimo, Pardo, PVClay and Beesputty are all brands that are excellent as well. I'd suggest you watch all the review videos I have done and pick a few to try yourself and see which ones you like working with the most.
PolymerClayTutor thanks for the advice, I will try that. I just ordered my first set of colors from premo cuz I've been working with the sculpey grey oven bake polymer I think it's just the original sculpey and I really like it but I needed colors bad. I only had grey so I'm super excited to work with some colors so I don't have to paint everything after its done. Thanks so much 4 the guidance, I really appreciate it😆
Nice video for us beginners. I have many of these tools because I do gumpaste cake toppers. Wonder if you'd do a video on surface effects on clay. I'm assuming I can use many of the items I have that I use on my gumpaste, but wondering if the surface effects would be the same? I love the look of leather, but try as I may, I haven't been able to create the look on my gumpaste. I notice there are sooooooooooooo many special effects clay like leather, glitter, sparkle, etc. Just wondering is these are worth investing in????
Thanks for a very informative video - I started to do polymer clay years ago, got injured and stopped and would like to get back into it. But as you mentioned in your video if you lose too much of the oils in your clay it will get brittle. Apparently that happens over time just from evaporation as well as from working on a porous surface. Is there some particular type of oil that I could somehow soak/massage into my old clay so it can be made workable again? I can't afford to buy all new clay at this time and would hate for my old polymer clay to go to waste.
Hi there, thank yo for your kind words! Yes there is an oil called Sculpey Clay softener that you can add to polymer clay to make it soft again. I have several videos on conditioning hard clay that should be very helpful for you. Check them out in our channel!
Thanks for the video....it was really helpful...can you please help how do we stick the polymer clay model to mug.... What glue to use ...need more information about it
Hello thank you for the video! My metal tools unfortunately stick to my polymer clay even though i am putting the clay on silicone so that i can form petals. What could you recommend to me what could help? I really appreciate your answer! 😊
Great video! I just watched the one about air bubbles and you said two pieces of tile sandwiched - Would you stlll put the tile sandwich inside of the trays with the aluminum pan lid / tent? Or do you just pop the tiles straight in the oven?
Hi there, great question! Since the clay is protected from the direct heat from underneath and above, there is no need to put your "tile sandwich" inside a pan with a tent over it. You can pop it straight into the oven.
Nice video, I am wondering can you uses polymer clay for bigger sculptures in place of modeling clay. Never had to much success with polymer/plastic type clay. It seems modeling clay you can get it in large quantities and in different soft ,med, hard consistencies (even powder clay form where you mix with water to create the consistency for pottery and sculpting.) Just seems these polymer clay are very hard /restrictive in the uses more only for smaller type things. But could be wrong great video great small designs do you do large sculptures and pottery as well?
@@PolymerClayTutor I have another similar clay question you may know about. How do you take any clay and color it to any color you want. What i mean is clay usually comes in grey , brown , redish colors but could you make the clay into solid blocks of any type color. Like polymer clay comes in all different small color blocks i like to beable to get the same colors for other air dry and ceramic clays. Normally you just paint the porcelain clay after you bake it , or you paint the air dry clay after it finishes drying with the desired acrylics color...etc
Is pug mill or grinding to powder the only way to embedd color in the full block of clay thats what i can think of only maybe you have a better option. Also how is polymer clay embedded with different colors is it added when its a powder form like i am thinking it is ... or maybe a pug mill mixes it enough to embedded continuously before its extruded out?
Also whats your opinion on sealing clays and painting them. I not sure if your just focusing on polymer clay or have experience in other air dry clays and even ceramic clays for pottery and sculpting...seems from the video you also have the tools for that because there usually the same for professional cake decorating and modeling/sculpting of clays . I have to say i am not so much into the polymer clay side as i am into the scultping /pottery clays but i do uses similar air dry clays for sculpting in. Just more Plasticine clay...etc eventually want to get into the really deal ceramic clays aka the wet clays as those are the ones you need a kiln for...But i want to get the skill of sculpting down first before i move on to the kiln level stuff.
Hi Sam, the best thing for you to do is do a search on our channel to find the topics you are looking for. Go to our channel and click the magnifying glass under the banner to see the search box pop up. Or you can go to our blog at www.polymerclaytutor.com and use the search box there to find all the answers to your polymer clay questions. It's too tricky to answer all your questions here in this tiny box. Thanks!
Here’s a question, I Literally just started doing polymer Clay two days ago and I want to try practicing making flowing fish/Mermaid fins since I know the techniques can be similar for making fabric folds. Any advice or possibly a Video on this?
Thanks for this very helpful video! Do you recommend using a silicone lining sheet on top of cooking sheet if I already have one, and then covering it with the upside down foil pan? Thanks!
You're going to need to get an oven to properly bake polymer clay. You can use your regular home oven if you have one or a toaster oven. If not, I suggest using an airdry polymer clay instead.
Something you just said answered my question as to why my clay just got dry, brittle, and broke. My working surface wasn't non porous. Geeze.. now I know. thank you
I am new to the polymer clay scene and really love working with it. My question now is.... would a sheet of plexiglass be ok to use for a work surface? Your tutorial is very informative and I have learned so much from watching it Thank you so much.
GREAT info.Where can I find all your over 600 videos to choose whichever I need? Am very grateful to find your experience right at beginning.Thank you..
Click on my name or face and it will take you to my channel where all my RUclips videos are. You can click on the little magnifying glass under the banner on my channel and a search box will pop up that you can find the video you need. Alternatively, you can go to my website at www.polymerclaytutor.com and do your searching there. Thanks!
Oh man I bought those like 5 years ago in a local mom and pop optometry shop. I doubt very much that they would still be for sale. But thank you for the compliment!
Can I use fondant tools for polymer clay and just wash them to use for fondant again? Or if I use it for polymer or can't be used for fondant anymore? Thanks:).
I have issues with baking :( I have an electrical oven that has no flames .. "building rules!" how can I work with that? and how do I know the exact time for each kind of polymer as the ones I find in my country have no instructions. also, they are really stiff .. so I add oil while softening it .. so im not sure how it will effect baking? and thank you for the tutorials ^_^
Beware and test if using the cake decorating tools (like the Wilton set). The set I got years ago did react with the clay, and got really nasty and melty if I didn’t clean them well after I used them. Finally threw them away. But maybe newer ones have improved on the plastics. They were really neat tools - until I abused and neglected them.
Excellent point Margaret! I haven't had issues with the tools I have used, but of course that could definitely be the case with other plastic tools out there, so thanks for the reminder!
I make standard ball beads that are about 1/4 inch thick. I am looking for a way to ensure that the beads will always be the same size. what do you recommend?
Is it possible to put polymer clay into a mold then remove it? I really want to make dome or rounded top shaped cabochons, would you have any recommendations?
I really love your video. I was just thinking that since I didn't see this video before, that it would have been very useful to me, and suddenly you mention the sheets of paper on the baking sheet. This will be of great help to me. Thank you :)
Maybe this is a no-brainer but, after one quick project, my biggest take-away was learning I should have cut my fingernails before starting. Otherwise, nail marks will be the biggest problem you have. I wish someone had mentioned this. I've watched about 5-10 different videos on this and... nothing. Also, I've been looking around for tools and kits (hoping to get everything I need to start) and noticed several kits have something called a "U shaped acrylic sheet board." It's about 4.3" x 6.9" and has raised edges on two sides and usually a size chart embedded in the center. So my question is, what is it used for and would you get one? Because, despite watching all those tutorials, I haven't noticed anyone using a "u board". So... What is your take on them?
Hi Cindy, I love all your tutorials and the simple way you always teach, thanks! I noticed that you made some tiny holes or perforations by the side of your tin foils (the ones that you cover your pieces when baking) is that necessary or optional? do holes improve the baking? can you enlight me? gracias & big hug!!!
I'm guessing it's for air circulation. I use a aluminium foil myself shaped into a little tent. My oven is just so tiny that this is the best version. I have this tent shaped to have lots of open space for circulation.
My blades do not cut well. Ince it gets halfway thru it will cut smoothly. They don't glide under rilled out clay like yours either. Should i buy some more? These came from Wish which may explain.
I too started with Carol Duvoll show it was so good,......never got very far just on a bucket list.... I want a over like you buy off the shelves at wal mart..... >? could use it again for food. I read you open the door let some air out at a time.....unclear. Back then some said you don't open the door to oven and let it cool completely before removing that was 20+ yrs back the clay has changed..... Live in 5th wheel and space is limited. I do like what you do and how and very helpful. thanks you..... is there a group on fb that does this and blogs,. thanks and have a nice day. suzanne spence. 2-10-17
would like tips for how to make a replica polymer clay bead to replace a lost metal bead from a bracelet...beads have two holes for elastic banding....can i use wire for smaller holes in polymer clay?
I have a question concerning very shallow designs in a silicone mold... How do you get the shape out without ripping it or totally distorting it. Thanks!!!
Polymer clay seems like its more meant for jewelry or small object making which is cool in its own right. But can't really do large sculptures or pottery stuff very well.
Loved your video. I am new to working with clay. I have been searching and searching for a video about the actual baking of the finished sculpture. I have heard that you cannot use your kitchen oven as the polymer gives off fumes. My toaster oven that I plan on using is not big enough for the heron that I am sculpting.....sooooooo do I have to sculpt the wings and legs separately and then glue them on after the initial bake
Polymer clay is non-toxic (at least the brands you can buy in North America) and are safe to bake in your home oven. SO go ahead. The problem is if you bake a ton of polymer clay projects, a plasticky residue can build up on your oven walls. If you're baking small items you can seal them inside a baking pan with a lid or a turkey bag, to avoid that residue. For larger items that can't be baked inside anything, I just run the self cleaning cycle after I am done baking my piece. You can also just wipe down the walls and the door with a baking soda paste. It's because of this hassle, that a lot of people have separate ovens.
i brought Kato clay and find it very hard to soften , i have now ordered some premo . do you have some hint to use the kato clay .i have 18 blocks. I live in country south australia so have to buy my supplies on the net.
+Tamara Colman Hi! We have several video for softening hard polymer clay that you should check out in our channel. They will work for most brands including Kato.

Have fun!
thank you so much!!!!!!!! i am wondering whether i should get a pasta machine, but i love your idea of using the cards!!!!!
Great video. Thanks for the helpful tips!
Here are some links:

Cindy,
Thanks for all of your wonderful videos. They are extremely helpful. I am a beginner and I have a lot of baked clay that look awful. Is there anything that I can do with theses pieces besides recycling them?
I am a beginner! Just going to start out. This is very useful for me. Thank you!
+BlackCat2 Is there any chance the pan is getting too close to the element? Maybe it is making the inside heat too high?
PolymerClayTutor I don't think so. It is an extra tall oven that can do rotisserie and what I am making is flat or really short. I would love to do something big - like 5-7 inches tall - but I worry about it.
Thank you so much for sharing your talents. Tempted to try clay now.
I enjoy the video.Thank you for sharing with us.
wow so cool and thanks for your sharing with us😄😄
Great video, very well explained.
Good idea Linda!
Thank you. I am a real newbie and found your advice so useful!
love it
Thank u so much for these tips and info.
If I use a silicon mold for polymer clay then I clean it can I re use it for fondant ? Or it’s not safe anymore? (Without baking )
Great information. Thanks. I'm new.
Wonderful wow you are so informative. Thank you for sharing. Kathy from Cali.😎
Thank you so much for your kind comment! Happy to help!
Hah! That playing card trick is genius.
For a surface, my desk is glass. Should that work?
Thanks!
I dont have a regular oven, just a convection microwave. Do you know if that would work for baking the clay?
Your amazing thank you for your insight . I have watched a few videos and the advice is so different,so thank you
Thank you Jen I appreciate you coming in and saying that! 💖
@@PolymerClayTutor so much different advice out there its a bit overwhelming x
Which type of oven you will prefer convention or just a normal heating oven?
Hello, I’m just starting out. I would love to know how you drill your polymer clay? Do you make the hole once it’s baked or raw?
Thank you for sharing this important information with us
Here’s a question, I Literally just started doing polymer Clay two days ago and I want to try practicing making flowing fish/Mermaid fins since I know the techniques can be similar for making fabric folds. Any advice or possibly a Video on this?
Thanks for this very helpful video! Do you recommend using a silicone lining sheet on top of cooking sheet if I already have one, and then covering it with the upside down foil pan? Thanks!
Honestly, do you bake very small things for an hour also? And what are the holes around your baking shield? Are they helpful?
Thank you for this
Hi... thank you for explaining every thing. If I don't have any of oven then how can I back my clay???
Thank you
You're going to need to get an oven to properly bake polymer clay. You can use your regular home oven if you have one or a toaster oven. If not, I suggest using an airdry polymer clay instead.
Great video, very informative . Thanks
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for popping by! 💖
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!
Something you just said answered my question as to why my clay just got dry, brittle, and broke. My working surface wasn't non porous. Geeze.. now I know. thank you
+Linda Jo Could also be because your temp is too low. Do you use an oven thermometer?
What should I mold first as a beginner?
Very helpful! Thank you!
Nice sharing beautiful
I am new to the polymer clay scene and really love working with it. My question now is.... would a sheet of plexiglass be ok to use for a work surface? Your tutorial is very informative and I have learned so much from watching it Thank you so much.
Sure. It may get scratches on it, if you also cut on it, but as long as it doesn't react with the clay it should be just fine.
Thanks!
@@PolymerClayTutor Thank you again.
Love your eyeglasses...can you please tell me where you purchased these?
Oh man I bought those like 5 years ago in a local mom and pop optometry shop. I doubt very much that they would still be for sale. But thank you for the compliment!
Can I use fondant tools for polymer clay and just wash them to use for fondant again? Or if I use it for polymer or can't be used for fondant anymore? Thanks:).
Gilian Isles you could use it for clay though no more fondant sculpting unless you buy another set
I have issues with baking :(
I have an electrical oven that has no flames .. "building rules!"
how can I work with that? and how do I know the exact time for each kind of polymer as the ones I find in my country have no instructions.
also, they are really stiff .. so I add oil while softening it .. so im not sure how it will effect baking?
and thank you for the tutorials ^_^
Watch this video, it will help: ruclips.net/video/V_8AgqVcOvA/видео.html
Hi what would you recommend the adhesive to use, I am making a clay adobe house, what is best to join walls, etc. Thank you.
Liquid sculpey I believe but there are many facebook groups to join!
Hi what kinda tile are you using and where can I buy one? . Love watching your videos thanks for sharing brightest blessings
You're so welcome! 💖
Hi Cindy,
I love all your tutorials and the simple way you always teach, thanks!
How do you get the clay from sticking to your roller clay I have the same as you.
the cards are a great idea thanks!
would like tips for how to make a replica polymer clay bead to replace a lost metal bead from a bracelet...beads have two holes for elastic banding....can i use wire for smaller holes in polymer clay?
I have a question concerning very shallow designs in a silicone mold... How do you get the shape out without ripping it or totally distorting it. Thanks!!!
+letellier1990 Go check the other videos in my channel... I have a video that shows you how to do that.
Polymer clay seems like its more meant for jewelry or small object making which is cool in its own right. But can't really do large sculptures or pottery stuff very well.
Can I use acrylic sealer? Thank you!
What extruder do you recommend ?
+PolymerClayTutor thank you I will search for it
Thank you
this was really helpful, thank you!!
