I watch a lot of polymer clay videos and I've never seen one that clearly demonstrates the various tools as comprehensively as does your video. I finally understand exactly what each tool can do. Thank you very much for this brilliant video! I am now a subscriber and look forward to viewing all of your tutorials. Thanks again!
Thanks to you and your video, I just finished my first polymer clay creation. Your descriptions of tools and their uses were clear, precise and useful, especially the tools found around the house. No big investment needed before starting out. Also found some more of my own. The ball end of a crochet needle, phillips head screwdriver for diamond patterns, and even an old manicure kit that had some spatula-like tools in it. Great job!
This is so wonderful Stephanie. In a sense, desperately simple. But that denies you the elegance of technique - copying is not so easy! Somehow, with the condition of Aphantasia that I have, I cannot visualise or pre-conceive of these wonderful techniques. Also, your voice is suitably relaxing and pleasant.
Very kind of you to reply. Your work by the way is consistently delightful. I visualise using what is there in front of my eyes. At least one Disney aminator has aphantasia! He sketches and modifies as his visualisation.
Oh, I love you! I am picking up this as a hobby and have been looking around for someone to explain the tools. You explained everything so well, and the bonus tip for the homemade alternatives was something I was wondering about. Thank you for making this video!
I feel confident & happy when I watch your videos. They are very informative and easy to follow. I especially like how you list all of the links and relative information below. I love your miniature kitty sculpture video. Arya will always be your soulmate & guardian kitty. Your art work is mind-bending. So tiny. Have a blessed day & evening. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us all.
I love that although you showed all the fancy tools you show at the end that you can sculpt with super basic things as well. The rounded end of a paintbrush is good as well. While I do have most of the tools you showed now, when I started I just had a toothpick and a needle and I was quite happy.
Some tools shown here can be expensive if you buy them from local stores. But if you have time, you can get some of them from AliExpress for a lot less money. The time is needed because it can take 7 days to 4 weeks until the packages arrive. Or you look for dental tools on flea markets which are very useful, too. You could also carve tools from wooden sticks (boxwood for example).
I'm currently making steps to get back into scale modeling. I definitely will do some sculpting this time and bought two types of Super Sculpey, support wire and various tools already. I want to turn a 1/12 scale succubus bust into a full figure by sculpting legs for her. It will be interesting. :-D I still had some Schmincke oil paints and bought an additional set from Winsor and Newton. Just for painting figures. There are companies who are specifically aiming at the modeling market so most "regular" artists don't know that they exist or what they are offering. I recently stumbled over "Abteilung 502". They have great oil paints for painting and weathering and even 10/0 Kolinsky brushes for extreme detail. Their products are next on my list.
Ahunque no se tu idioma eres muy clara en tu demostracion eres muy buena en lo q haces y ademas muy buena maestra gracias por compartir tus conocimientos estoy siguiendote fielmente no me pierdo ninguna de tus clase magistrales.
A simple tool I use it a #2 pencil & pencil end eraser. No the lead does not discolor my white clay and the eraser is one of my first go too tools. (it''s in my top pocket waiting to be used) Try it on a small piece of clay and see for yourself. I can do everything he does above, with just the pencil & eraser. Happy carving
I just discovered you and realized Iv been sculpting with sculpting tools that are too large . Where can I get a kit just like these here? Thanks I just subscribed !
hello, never done clay sculpt before but i came across your channel. i know this video is 3 years ago but i would like to know what kind of clay do you use?
I'm using a manicure tools kit and some dentistry tools (all it is super cheap because Is pre-used, and it Is ok aperfect condition because it Is Made with steel, AND about cleaning use some alcohol.
A tip for future watchers, I am a dental nurse and most dentists have old dental tools used to shape fillings etc lying in a drawer somewhere. Just ask your dentist- they may be willing to give them to you for free to clear space. Thanks for this video. Covid lockdowns have me playing with polymer clay again and this was very helpful. It’s one of those videos that people will refer to long after you’ve moved on from RUclips. ❤️
Hello! I've been watching your tutorials for a few days now, but have not yet found an answer to a very basic question: what kind of silicone 2-part putty do you use? I saw you use it for making raspberries for a berry cake. I've never made a mold before but would like to try. Do you have a favorite brand/style of silicone molds? It is rather confusing trying to figure out where to start! Thank you for your tutorials- very awesome to watch and learn!
Thank you for that great review on the basic tools and how to use the in sculpturing polymer clay . I am going to. Mention you in my next article of the SEFPCG NEWLETTER
Whoa look at you otaku-chan ! I respect your BG music for your video! Parasyte Eve. Sounds like you were born i the best decade of video games and anime ^.^ If I am correct then a lot of respect and love for you :D
Stephanie, your videos are amazing and inspiring! I am dying to get the little spatula tools from AMCreatures. I was wondering, were there any other tools from that shop/creator that you've tried and enjoyed? The tiny spoon and half rounded spatulas look very useful, but I'm wondering if you've tried them! Thanks again for your whole channel :D
I actually bought the set of 9 tools and I'm sure others might find them very useful, I just happen to never use them. Haven't bought any other tools from him. I'm not really a tool freak, I like to use what I have on hand, rather to try new tools/materials all the time. ^^
Hi my name is Zaza from Indonesia. I have some questions to fulfill my college's homework first of all i thank you to read this message and hope you will answer this, cause i need an expert to answer my question. i want to know what do you think about your needle clay tools? is it fine and comfortable to use? are you have any difficulties when using it? are you have any argument about that tools? please let me know ˃ᴗ˂ your feedback is very important thank you so much i'm sorry if i disturbing you 🥺
This was very useful! Also, if I were to paint onto my clay before I bake it (I use FIMO which bakes at 110 degree celsius) what paints or paint powders would be safe to put in the oven?
it's always best to test. I tested all my paints, some very high quality ones will bleed, some not. Just take some white polymer clay and write letters for each paint (or find a code) then bake. Also make a test to paint on baked clay to see how it evolves in time.
^_^ i liked the broke version of tools. I've used pretty much only a small nail in most of my projects before. But I really wanna get some of the ball tools and rubber tools to up my sculpture game.
Greetings, the tool you used at the 3:33 for lines, do you know of a different source and exactly what it is called. When I click on the link, it doesn’t show up. I am in USA by the way.
ah yes, many people have trouble finding this one. Some dental tools look similar, maybe look into that. Or just keep you eyes open in art supplies store for similar looking tools.
I adore your channel and all your creations! I was wondering if maybe you take requests? if so, I'd love to see different shells and sea life type things..
Hello there! I very rarely take requests, however sea fauna and flora are likely to be made soon enough! :) I only have one video of sea urchins to far, in case you missed it : ruclips.net/video/iigpkI2nK_8/видео.html
Aww thank you so much for this video and also thanks for the awesome links in the description! I dunno why, maybe ebay just wants my money, but I always found only expensive silicone sets :O
You can also use rubber stamp making or litho carving tools or leather crafting tools as well like a pear shader, beveler, etc. For some like the round ball stylus tools are used in leather as well can be used for anyone who may have these types of tools also. Youll be surprised what kind of designs or textures you can get from using some of the leather embossing or 3D leather stamps. Experiment and have fun with it. www.tandyleather.com/en/category/craftool-stamps-leathercraft

I really liked the demonstration for each tool! Usually the tools are just shown and spoken about but very rarely demonstrated. Good job! 😊
glad you enjoyed it! ^^

I agree with Jennifer Forest! You taught me many new things about the tools used to work with Polymer Clay. Thank you very much! ~Janet in Canada
Thank-You for that tool-list and ‘how-to’ demo, Stephanie; it was such a help!

Appreciate your help, I've wanted to get into sculpting for years!...I can't wait to make something
as someone starting out, this was very helpful! thankyou for making this!
Clay sculpturing tools fantastically explained thank you
You give fantastically free advice and I for one am grateful. Thank you so much.🙏🏼
You're very welcome!
I just got clay for Christmas can’t wait to make things! Thanks for ur help!

yes, you can be satisfied with very little tools :) though when you start buying actual tools it is quite life changing :D

Thank you very much for the very valuable information.
Thankyou for the detailed summary

ah that's interesting! But yes it makes sense; I know some people use nails or screws to sculpt. You just have to keep your eyes open and try!
I find that a basic wax tool kit works excellently for most applications. The ball tools do everything the wax tools can’t.
Recently found myself wanting to sculpt again... Thank you. I really needed this.
Everything I needed to know in one video thank you
Your video is great but please tell how much costs these tools
Another good hack that I still use even with tools: toothbrush! A good replacement for sandpaper .( don't use your own toothbrush obviously)
True, althought I never liked using toothbrushes, hence why I never suggest it.
I also have some of those disposable mascara wands that a lot of cosmetics stores have (to test samples) :P
disposable mascara wands? Didn't even know that existed :D But I never wear make-up so that would explain it ^^
I don't wear makeup either, but for me it's fun to look through the stores! hahaha
You can get one at the dollar store
thank you so much for making this video.
Thank you for this thorough video! 💙
I love these tools and have some version of most of them. I find most of mine searching for fingernail art tools on eBay!
Thanks ! for this valuable information . 🤔
Thank you for the great info just got my first set of polymer clay but it had plastic tools, definitely have to get the tools you have. Thanks again 😊
Thank you so much! Can you please post links on ebay of this tools? Love you!!!
thank you so much stephanie
Nice demostración de herramientas
Can you make flat bottomed circles with a needle tool if you don't go all of the way through the clay?
Thx you explained alot for me to sculpt
I just discovered you and realized Iv been sculpting with sculpting tools that are too large .
Where can I get a kit just like these here? Thanks
I just subscribed !
The best tools video....thanks!
Superb video. Thank you
Hey I really love sculpting and the it's too expensive so can anyone pls say what can I replace with the silicon tool pls
just use toothpicks and your fingers! you can also use pencils, pins, screws, nails, ... just look around you to find suitable things.
Hi if you wanted to make a chess set out of clay, which type of clay would you use? Is self hardening clay good enough? Thanks
Thank you for this! Thinking of getting into polymer clay and this was super helpful 😊

Very helpful 👍
Can i get those all in a kit. ? Where ?
I want to make some caricature sculptures out of plasticine and have fallen into one problem/question. Will it keep? Crack? Melt over time?
plastiline is meant to make casts out of it or to learn how to sculpt, so it's not a material you would use in a final sculpture.
Thankyou for share this video Stephanie Kilgast👏👏😃😃😁

very good video, so that, now i can easily use tools. after making item, baking is necessary ?
What types of surfaces do you like to sculpt on? Specifically, smaller sculptures and miniatures. Thank you.
I use tiles, the ones you would normally put on a wall or floor that are enameled and very smooth.
Does anyone know how the tools like curved spatulas are specifically called?
Did you ever find out

thanks for idea for tools without money... and can you please tell me alternative without money for polymerclay
you could always try "papier mache", basically paper pulp and glue, you have to online search for recipes though
