Just dropping this tip for others, a Park district emits an averaged out entertainment value. The larger the district size, the more that entertainment value is 'spread out'. It can be a useful trick to manipulate land value just by painting a Park district. oh man, thanks for showing that props do have an effect for parks. Gotta admit, I was NOT expecting that ending to be so entertaining. Thanks for that bit of awesome ridiculous bit :)
Thank you! I’m not 100% sure that the entertainment value gets spread out, or at least not the buildings anyway. I’ve noticed in the past (haven’t checked again recently to see if maybe the game mechanic has changed) in a very long linear park in one city that the effects of a Park Plaza fo example are localized, and that a plaza 1km away in the same park didn’t affect lane value or leisure. It’s been a while since I put that to the test...I’d like to know a bit more how the props work out-if they’re local, or averaged or what. I could be conflating some things from like a year ago though...so don’t quote me on that just yet! 😁
OH MAN!!! I guess I didn’t walk into that one! How could I skip such a great opportunity! Thank you! And I suppose there are other episodes with parks coming!
Counterintuitively, park entrances near intersections can be problematic due to the path extending from the side of the gate, allowing people to skip the gate and enter from the side. You can see the path extension effect more clearly by drawing a regular path to an intersection and noticing that it has a bit of an 'L' shape to it. Perhaps more strangely, the same thing happens if you terminate a ramp at the entrance. I think the game considers the ramp path to be extended over the gate and that people are climbing over it or something. Sometimes the game sets invisible intersections; you can see these when people inexplicably cross the middle of the street. You can verify proper operation of a gate by clicking on it and then the route icon and then on a nearby path. If pathing occurs on the path but not the gate, and it looks like arrows are outside of the gate when clicking on paths, then the gate is improperly placed. If Move It! is available, dragging the entrance back a bit from the street tends to straighten the path. Props adding value is totally new to me, so there's yet another thing I learned from this series. Something I've recently learned is that special area income, i.e. from parks, industries, and campuses, have a negative effect on zoned tax revenue. Details can be found in Pwner’s Manual's "Running a Campus as a Business " Steam Community guide. I don't think it's a net negative given how profitable special areas tend to be but it could aid in reevaluating certain things. For example, the Recycling policy works as a function of collected tax, so fewer taxes collected make it cheaper to implement. Also, even regular parks are overpowered in this game. Structures like Small Park and Paradox Plaza are dirt cheap and have incredible effects on land value, especially when combined with the Parks and Recreation policy.
Making money has never been a problem, but holy cow am i learning so much even after 2 years of playing. So so informative! Thanks Lee. Glad to see you back

You may choke the traffic going into Fourth Street to one lane to discourage unnecessary traffic in town.

I've done a test and found something interesting. Since I live in a more rural city, I'm used to simpler, smaller neighborhoods and have played a a couple games using only 1x2 Low Density Residential houses in 4xN neighborhoods. I've found that doing so (besides being incredibly tedious) gives you better (and earlier!) household density. Eight 1x2 houses hold 8 households, where as a one 4x4 house starts at 2 households and has to level up to eventually get 5 or 6. And the edges are even better since then you can zone 1x1 houses. Again, it's mind numbingly tedious, but to my rural eyes, it looks more "right". Unfortunately, the same trick doesn't really work for Low Density Commercial nor Industry (though the 1x1 edge part does).
LOL yes, I have done something similar...it looks really whacky with full 2-unit wide streets, so I used the narrow 1-unit streets from NExt. I did the math and those houses are on lots that are roughly 26 feet by 52 feet, which is super duper tiny for single-family! It's a pretty reasonable size for a row house though I suppose. I just did a quick search, and a fairly common old urban lot size is 30-36 feet. Nowadays it's pretty common to see something more like 90 x 105 feet though, which would roughly be a 3x4 unit lot in Cities: Skylines. I'm personally a bigger fan of having the smaller houses...often I'll zone so the houses are only on 2x4 or 2x3 unit lots in the game, and then fill them in afterward. It looks better than the giant houses we get otherwise. I always feel like the scale is so far off in the game when it comes to the buildings. The commercial/office buildings are so tiny sometimes, while the single family houses are gigantic, and don't technically hold a single family.
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Wow. I didn't realize the cells were that tiny. Then again, my house is about the size to fit in a 1x2 lot. It was built in the 50's or 60's (and again, rural city).
@@KnTenshi2 I live in a townhouse condominium in a suburb...except that when it was built in 1965, it was still mostly farm country here...and I'm pretty sure it's only about 18 ft x 25 ft or so...which would easily fit on a 1x2 with room to spare, even with the attached garage. I would say it depends less on how rural the area is than what era most of it was built...at least here in the US...not sure where you are.
@@KnTenshi2 Yeah, the cells are just 8 m by 8 m. One downside to the smaller buildings: a bunch of the policies have a per-building cost. So if you want to run something like High-Tech Housing (which is almost like a mini Eden project, for residential) then it's better to only have the big ones.
Me either! Those are all coming very soon now! Only one or two more milestones and we will have high density and rail available. There’s a lot of stuff to do in the next few videos to transition from a little town to a small city. LOTS to improve!
@@ToddKeck98 thanks for telling me! Also tell your Cities: Skylines friends and forums 😁 the YT algorithm has been pretty rough on this series lately. I really appreciate the sharing 😊
I only just discovered your channel and this series. But regarding recycling plants, instead of adding a new one, I actually found using the Recycling and Recycling Plastics policies can greatly reduce the strain on recycling centers and saves the need of having to build another one. Though I don't know if it balances out with weekly costs.
The bit about props in the parks was eye-opening. I'm sorry I missed all the comments about roundabouts. I'd dive right in the middle of that. I hate roundabouts and make a point of never using them in any city. They're an ugly, lazy, band-aid "fix" for problems that have better solutions.
Lol 😂 I really think they’re great IRL, but the way they have to be implemented in Cities: Skylines makes me stand up and say “PREACH, Brother!” I think they definitely have their place in traffic engineering, but there are many situations where they won’t work well at all.
Oh I'm continuing it :-D the best is yet to come! Now that most of the beginner and financial stuff is out of the way, we can get down to more of the strategy, especially when it comes to urban design and traffic 😃
@@akshaybalasubramanian828 great question! Not sure about ponds...I’m guessing no, based on what I know of game mechanics-but I could be wrong. With rocks, I think those work like props, so probably.
Wow, really enjoyable and fun to follow. It's been a couple years since I've played this game and this series has been a great refresher - and has showed me some great new tricks! I hope you continue this one!
I have a lot done for the next 3 videos...but we have had a rough start to the year with a death in the family...so that’s why production has ground to a halt. Hopefully I’ll be able to get something out in the next couple weeks or so! Great stuff in the works!!!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto I'm sorry to hear, hope you are all doing ok. It's been a tough year for many people, hopefully it's taken as a good opportunity by all of us to learn a little patience! Looking forward to the new installments when they come out. I really liked the road angles discussion, build direction implications, stop sign management and general city outline planning that went into it. I also like the learning summaries at the end of the video. It definitely takes a ton of work to get one of these out, but they're approachable.
Well, convenient that I got Parklife for Christmas, then 😁 I had no idea that props helped them! Entertainment for zero upkeep is amazingly powerful; good tip!
Do you need a Parks Maintenance service early on the game? (Low level parks) and do burned down props/shops in the park from fires reduce entertainment value? Oh, and also park ordinances? Some of these you might explain in future videos. I can’t wait
Oh my! Great questions! Thanks for bringing those up! Short answer...I think burned stuff comes back, unless it's a building, and no...you don't need park maintenance.
So, after coming over from City planner Plays a couple days ago, I have now watched through this season of MMLT, and I really enjoyed it! :) This is, along with Phil's videos, probably one of the best resources for new players to learn A LOT about how the game and city planning in general work :) And even for someone like me, who plays this game pretty much since its release ca 2122 years ago, when the good ol' roman republic was still kinda going "strong"-ish, I must say I learned quite a lot and am looking forward to implementing some of these things in my own cities :) Also, you mentioned Coruscant. This needs to happen in Cities Skylines, like RIGHT NOW :D Thanks a lot for making these videos! Really really appreciate them :) I guess I'll find one of your other series to watch now :D
Great! I hope you enjoyed Part 6 as well! And if Coruscant happened in this game 😱 oh the lag! The game engine would be like 😳🤪 but man would it be fun to see this!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto I did! Part 6 was actually the first one I wathed because of Phil's recommendation :D And noooo, no no... there is no such thing as lag in Cities: Skylines :D
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto yeah, I guess if you crank it up to 8K and then you record at 1 FPS and speed up the footage 60x, it'll look awesome :D seriously though, a kind of futuristic city builder similar to C:S but with planet-wide cities and flying vehicles would be.. I don't even have words for that :D pretty epic!
I love this series! You do a great job in explaining how things work in this game and why you're making your choices, which is super helpful! Plus your presentation is clear and fun. Subscribed, and looking forward to the next one in the series. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into these videos.
I have been following along so attentively and lost track of time really enjoying the complexity and detail (slightly different results due to console eg cant place park decorations too close to fence or adjacent to each other ridiculous but thats ps4) then i got to 4200 and saw no other part 6 and was devastated searching and searching needing my fix then realised it wasn’t that long ago you completed these. The time it would have taken for you to do this “phew” but i can’t lie i am hanging for the next lot 😜
I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed these! I can’t wait to put more out there! Part 6 should land in early April, and I have many more videos beyond that planned. I had to take a total hiatus the past two months since we had a death in the family, sadly. 😔
I am so sorry for your loss😔, hope you and your family cherishes the good times. Love to you all. I am very much looking forward to the upcoming vids, eagerly awaiting your wisdom 😀.
Thanks for the info about the props in the parks! I had no idea! Also: Loved the Emperor Palpatine impression at the end. This channel is underrated! I really wish it continued to BIGGER cities. I always get to about 40,000 in population and everything goes to pot.
There are two policies that unlock at Worthy Village you can use for water and power besides the budget: water usage and power usage, which reduce consumption by 15 and 11% respectively, for a cost of ₡5 per week per building. I haven't compared the costs of the policies to the cost of adjusting the budget sliders. It might be worth an experiment. Perhaps they're worth keeping on and running under budget even at city sizes?
I almost used those policies rather than increasing the budget...but they cost a fortune! It’s always better to avoid these policies when your city is small or you will accumulate cash very very slowly. It’s not really that expensive by comparison to raise the budget though.
I somehow ended up with 1 million in the bank, a happy and well educated population in my first tile. Not sure what I did. Also very little traffic congestion overall in my grid. Now that I have lots of money, I'm going to buy another tile and make it boujee as hell and make my original tile all industry
You make great content that actually teaches people the mechanics of the game so they can better their game. You have too little views... sorry that the algorithm can't distinguish good content from popular content.
Hard to say. I’m working on it now. A lot of it depends on how fast the research goes, as well as what else I have competing for my time IRL. I wish I had a set schedule, but some of these come together faster than others. The other problem I have right now is that I need to do a ton of stuff all at once and at this point the game throws even more at me on top of that. It’s hard to work out the best order of things. I think once we get through the next 2-3 videos, it’ll get a bit easier since I’ll have a lot of the reorganizing done-which will allow me more freedom of choice on what topic to cover next. The next few videos will be worth the wait though! I introduce a lot of planning and traffic strategies that I don’t see anywhere else. And I might hold off and release them in February anyway, but provide early access outside of RUclips as they’re finished.
As an American who sees very little use for roundabouts, I can't imaging complaining that there aren't enough of them. I do complain when one is used unnecessarily.
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Sadly, I think a lot of people prefer form over function. I'd love to challenge the people who don't like grids to get from Point A to Point B within their own game cities from ground level with only a paper map (no GPS tracking nor pathfinding). Actually, I'd like to do that anyways. See how the cims see the city.
@LeeHawkinsPhoto love the series, very informative, but better naming of the videos to include the part number for easier follow would be very helpful

I believe you just right-click and drag to rotate objects…I’m not on front of the game right now though. You can change stop signs and traffic lights in the Traffic Routes Info View, which I demonstrate in Part 6.

@@ToddKeck98 thanks for telling me! Also tell your Cities: Skylines friends and forums 😁 the YT algorithm has been pretty rough on this series lately. I really appreciate the sharing 😊
0:56 lmbo, I love how the word Like frames the building thats on fire 😂😂
The way you do your videos are great. Earned a well deserved sub! Keep doing your thing my man.
😊 thank you! Will do!
@LeeHawkinsPhoto I absolutely despise them in real life. I drive trucks, they are excruciating to navigate when you're pulling a 53' trailer.
@@johnterpack3940 yeah…they’re designed with the mountable island…but it has to be nerve wracking. They definitely aren’t truck friendly.
I’m loving this series. I hope you continue it.
Oh I'm continuing it :-D the best is yet to come! Now that most of the beginner and financial stuff is out of the way, we can get down to more of the strategy, especially when it comes to urban design and traffic 😃
Lee, are you going to continue this series? I am anxiously awaiting the next installment!
I am hoping to make headway on Part 6 today...it should see release in April.
omg I had no idea that props would increase park value! Great tip!
It’s true! Trees increase it too 😁
Yeah, this is fantastic information!

@@LeeHawkinsPhoto What about rocks and Inland ponds?
Amazing job, I´m anxiously waiting for part 6
Very informative and fun to watch! Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks! Will do!
Woohoo Xmas, new episode. Thanks Lee, I appreciate the continuance of this series. Hopefully continuing for a while yet. Awesome vid. Merry Xmas.
I’m happy you enjoyed the vid! Glad you found time to sneak in a watch 😄
Well, convenient that I got Parklife for Christmas, then 😁
I had no idea that props helped them! Entertainment for zero upkeep is amazingly powerful; good tip!
It is indeed! It looks really nice still too 😊
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto If you'd seen any of my cities you'd know that looking nice is clearly pretty low on my priority list 😛
@@namelessfellow doh! 😮
This is, along with Phil's videos, probably one of the best resources for new players to learn A LOT about how the game and city planning in general work :)
And even for someone like me, who plays this game pretty much since its release ca 2122 years ago, when the good ol' roman republic was still kinda going "strong"-ish, I must say I learned quite a lot and am looking forward to implementing some of these things in my own cities :)
Also, you mentioned Coruscant. This needs to happen in Cities Skylines, like RIGHT NOW :D
Thanks a lot for making these videos! Really really appreciate them :)
I guess I'll find one of your other series to watch now :D
Great! I hope you enjoyed Part 6 as well!
And if Coruscant happened in this game 😱 oh the lag! The game engine would be like 😳🤪 but man would it be fun to see this!
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto I did! Part 6 was actually the first one I wathed because of Phil's recommendation :D
And noooo, no no... there is no such thing as lag in Cities: Skylines :D
@@NoMercy8008 well...with the right mods and some video editing software, you can get some great cinematics 😎
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto yeah, I guess if you crank it up to 8K and then you record at 1 FPS and speed up the footage 60x, it'll look awesome :D
seriously though, a kind of futuristic city builder similar to C:S but with planet-wide cities and flying vehicles would be.. I don't even have words for that :D pretty epic!
“Oh boy I love how entertaining this #park #fence is, keep it up mayor!”
The whole video was really helpful, but OMG the ending! XD
Oh...I’m afraid the deflector shield will be quite operational when your friends arrive...
Excited for part 6, keep up the good work really enjoyed it :)
Thank you! I’m so glad! And I can’t wait myself!!
Lee, as usual: fantastic addition to a fantastic series. Keep it coming, so good!
Will do! 😁
You picked the perfect day to release this...Thanks!!
Glad you enjoyed!
Cant wait to see the next episode!!! Cheers from Indonesia 🇮🇩 Love how you detailed things in every episodes!
Glad you enjoyed! Thank you!
As a New Yorker, that park is weird. No basketball courts? No handball courts? No soccer field? What kind of place is this!
Thank you, Lee. Another perfect one. So time and effort does pay off... who knew? ;-)
Thanks! It’s true 😁
Thanks for the info about the props in the parks! I had no idea! Also: Loved the Emperor Palpatine impression at the end. This channel is underrated! I really wish it continued to BIGGER cities. I always get to about 40,000 in population and everything goes to pot.
where the part 6,7,8,9,10...at? im loving this, im new to this game and im trying to build a nice city
I have a lot of work done, but we had a death in the family early last month, so I’ve had to divert my energies right now.

Park Life is great, the zoo is my favourite :) Altough the bisons keep setting fire to their enclosure 🤣
🔥 😲 Oh no!!! Park Life is fantastic, isn't it! SUCH and improvement over the Asset Editor!
Still looking forward to the next part. Come on Lee!
Clear, concise and enjoyable. As always :)
So glad you liked it! Thank you!
You are a great explainer! This is the best tutorial I have watched.
☺️ awww shucks!
When is the next part coming? Great series!
Neeeeeed that next episode!! Great series 👍🏼
cant wait to see what comes next! this is such a good series.
It's gonna be fun! :-D thanks so much for watching!

Seriously, the break down of how the combination of parks and strong education builds a healthy city I want to send to my *actual* city council.
Yup…I’m in Northern Ohio…quality of life is a thing that matters!
I somehow ended up with 1 million in the bank, a happy and well educated population in my first tile. Not sure what I did. Also very little traffic congestion overall in my grid.
Now that I have lots of money, I'm going to buy another tile and make it boujee as hell and make my original tile all industry

To answer your question about caskets, they’re ordered from industry supplier and delivered by truck, just before the hearse comes.
THAT explains it! Wow, how did I not find that lol
Happy Xmas Lee, hope you have a great day!
Not to neglect the great work you put in but the intro and outro music is very cool. I am curious is it copyright free?
It's not copyright-free, but it is royalty-free...it's Dan Henig's "Subway Dreams".
More of this please! :)
Oh believe me! You don’t know the POWER of the _park_ side!
I keep coming back and hoping for part six and no still not up 😭.
It'll be up by the end of the month! It's been a long winter for me......
Subscribed you just for that prop tip!!!
That’s a biggie, isn’t it! Glad to have helped you out!
You make great content that actually teaches people the mechanics of the game so they can better their game. You have too little views... sorry that the algorithm can't distinguish good content from popular content.
Thank you! Me too…I’m glad you found my vids though!
Is it safe to assume that the ETA for part 6 is about a month?
And I might hold off and release them in February anyway, but provide early access outside of RUclips as they’re finished.
we need part 6 its been months man!! ive been following your tutorial and now nothing!! :((
Had a death in the family...Part 6 will drop this month.
So my park areas were always too big. Once I cheated a bit by putting a subway station near the gate ^^
😨 you…capitalist! 😁
As an American who sees very little use for roundabouts, I can't imaging complaining that there aren't enough of them. I do complain when one is used unnecessarily.
I have had a lot of people complain about the grid...a LOT.
@@KnTenshi2 YES! I wholeheartedly agree! I always try to keep that kind of thing in mind as I build my cities, whether they have a grid plan or not.

Sorry for the confusion! I answered your other question. You probably just had to back up a tad on the Community tab to find the pill before.
yo I just found out this episode came out. I think RUclips doesn't recommend premiered videos as much as normal videos. I have watched the previous four episodes but had no idea this one came out.
I think I've premiered every single video in this series...it's probably the algorithm being dumb :-/
Whens the next episode! Been enjoying this alot, you know ur shit man 🙌🏻
It should come out in April sometime...and there will be more episodes behind it {hopefully} to keep things going more regularly.
This probably sounds like the biggest noob question ever, but what key/button rotates objects like flower beds? And what key/button changes traffic lights to stop signs? I can't figure it out 🤨 Thanks!!
I believe you just right-click and drag to rotate objects…I’m not on front of the game right now though. You can change stop signs and traffic lights in the Traffic Routes Info View, which I demonstrate in Part 6.
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto Thanks so much! 🥳

Oh I most definitely wasn’t going to substitute my live self with my concisely scripted and edited self! There’s plenty more of MMLT to come! There’s a LOT we have to do with this city yet...
I still have to check Puerto del Mar, but I need time to watch those.
@@rtleitao78 lol it seems a lot of folks just go for background on those. I have thought about editing these down into smaller chunks with the action more compressed. That would take time away from this series right now though...so I’m holding off on that. There’s a lot of good stuff in here, but it’s definitely not bite-sized like MMLT! 😳
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto don't do it. Dont take time out of MMLT. I'll find some time for Puerto del Mar. It's just that it's a hard format for me.
@@rtleitao78 I appreciate that! I honestly decided MMLT was going to be all 10-20 minute videos to begin with, and since I had a few clamoring for longer and live stuff, I decided to try it out. Puerto del Mar has been fun so far! It’s hard to make it move since it’s live though. I love doing both, but for completely different reasons.
