I had to remove the wheel bearings to get the axles out. Only 3 bolts for each bearing and it was way easier to remove with much more access room to slide away from the vehicle. Also re-installing the new one was much easier and the part that goes into the diff didn't get as dirty as it would have by pushing it way toward the inside of the vehicle. Putting it back in took a while and seemed like it would be a fight but once it was positioned correctly, it just slid into the diff side. Be patient and work it in and out until the splines line up. A bigger hammer is not the way to install it into the diff end! Good advice to knock the axle loose with a pry bar or something from under the vehicle. It needs the bump to knock it out. Pulling just wouldn't work. First one took about 4 hours but the 2nd only 2 hours once I realized taking the bearing off would allow much easier access.
"Sockets you'll need - 15, 17, 18, and 19"
Sweet, I got 10 of each of those.
"Step one - OK, so take your 35mm socket..."
Shit.
lol right!
Facts
deep socket
Ya really !! 🤣 kinda forgot about that one didn't they ! Lol
good video, just thought items needed list should have 35mm axle nut socket. that is the first tool used besides flat head screwdriver used to remove wheel center cap! nobody is going remove old cv axle without the correct axle nut socket. great info for the do it yourselfer like myself.
Speaking for people doing this job on jack stands. Very difficult to remove the axle for me from the front case. I ended up needing one person tugging on the shaft and another person then hammering a large pry bar
Great video
Is it the same procedure of you have 4wd, do you need to remove the front differential in that case?
Thanks
Some assembly grease on the inner cv joint slip ring does wonders when installing a new cv axle
Good video. Literally just walked me thru the replacement of this. Previous owner only left the ends of the axles attached. So i had a few less steps. Thanks for the video...
Would this process be fairly close to the same in a 2004 Trailblazer EXT 4WD?
Yeah they’re the same for the most part just different trim etc
I lifted 2” my envoy 2003 and it has break the axle disconnect actuator twice, and they recomend to put a clutch sleeve coupler, any videos on how to install it
Very helpful thank you. A few months ago I had mine replaced and since then at low speeds as in a parking lot when I turn the wheel fully left the stabilitrak activates. Wanted to see what might have happened during the repair and see if/how the wheel speed sensor could be damaged. A new hub on the same side and the problem persists. I’m thinking one or both front wheel sensors are dirty or rust has caused one or both to have moved slightly. I imagine full lock left or right is a condition in which the speeds of the two wheels are most disparate and any tolerance issues could cause a false wheel slip event, triggering the stabilitrak to apply the brakes.
Thanks for your vids they are informative and we'll laid out. Thanks!
Would the same procedure be very similar on a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer LTZ?
Same
Just had my front axel replaced on a GMC Envoy 2003 SLT and they left it in 4WD and I did not know it until the light came on. I switched it off. Now I need a new accelerator pedal. Could the axel repair and or being left in 4WD caused damage to the accelerator pedal circuit?
Is it necessary to replace the axles or can it be just the cv joints?
I replaced passenger side cv axle on a 98 Chevy 4x4 blazer on how much gap should there be between the cv axle and the shaft that goes to the diff i had about a 1/2 inch gap and could not make the axle go in any further is this too much gap
if you do the driver side one , is it anymore things to do step wise?
Why do the axles never come right out on the worn out stuff I work on???.
Does this only apply to a 4x4? I just bought a 2 wheel drive and there's nothing there. 🤔
Is this also applicable to the Chevy Trailblazer?
will this work on a 2008 ?
I just replaced the actual disconnect and putting the CV shaft back in it does not want to go all the way in I tried rotating it back and forth to possibly line it up with the splines and I cannot get it to go all the way and it's stopping about an inch from going all the way in any suggestions as to why or what I can do
David Lee you have to line the open groove up in order to make it sit right in. I mean you did ask this a year ago so I hope you got it. Just trying to help.
@@BLK_WILL_SS youre helping me out today so thanks lol!
Is this Envoy rear wheel drive? Is it only 2 wheel Drive? Thanks!
It's 4x4 because 2wd wouldn't have front axles
So when you gave a list of tools you were going to need before the video started. What happened to that 35 mm socket which was the second tool you used in the video....
the first part of the video shows a brand new rotor and as u take off the caliper it shows a rusted old rotor im confused
What size is the axle nut?
Will bad axles cause my front wheel to lock up only in 4wd i already changed both hub bearings i have a 03 trailblazer ls if i put it in 4wd i can only go maybe 2 feet then it feel like the front wheels get stuck but i can go in reverse and it rolls fine please help me thanks
I have a 04 envoy my driver side axel has alot of play in it there isnt a disconnect on driver side is there?
nice video. do like all your videos. would it be the same procedure for the driver side axle. use a pry bar and hammer it out??
+nelson mendez It should be the same or a similar procedure on the driver's side. Here's a link to the replacement axle that we carry which is shown in the video www.1aauto.com/cv-axle-shaft-front-driver-or-passenger-side/i/1aacv00146?RUclips&CTA%20Comment&
I have a 2008 Trailblazer LT I have already replaced both front wheel bearings... however its the front end has started vibrating from time to time when accelerating. My last oil change I noticed what looked like grease along the front diff. There is slight vibration in my steering as well. Are these signs of needing to replace the cv axles? I havnt been able to get under it to check the boots for splits or anything. Also at times when I first get in to leave, it feels like im on ice and my steering is a little iffy at best. Usually clears up after a very short distance of driving.
+Dewy Dew You may want to inspect some of the steering components to see if any if them are worn and need to be replaced.
Don't forget the 35mm socket that's a pain in the butt to find... and make sure you have the correct size socket for the new one... Had to buy a 35mm and a 36mm socket. Could only get them in impact, so that's $35 just in sockets that was spent...
Brian, Advance auto sells them, at a better price, but still impact.
One would think that when the wheel bearing was done would be a good time to do the cv shaft. A bit of antiseize on the rotor hub interface will save a lot of hammer rash on the rotor too eh.
How long would this take a mechanic shop for hourly charge ??
+B M It really depends on the mechanic but we estimate approximately and hour or a little more. Thanks for watching.
I got a quote from a local garage 200$ I'm like woah it's maby 1 hour work @80 hr.
Also I found that 1- 5/8" works for the center nut in place of 35mm
My shop quoted some insane price for this and after watching these videos I have no idea why. Everything else I've ever had from them was within reason, but for this I was told $1200 for one side.
I recently purchased a 2006 gmc envoy with the 4.2 4x4 I heard a humming coming from the passenger side so i replaced the barring when replacing i spun the cv axle and heard a noise like a dry barring or worn does the axle housing hold the baring within?
+Brrnnan Burg Thanks for watching! A CV joint does have bearings in it, so the axle might need to be replaced too. 1aauto.com
When you did this did a?all of the diff fluid drain out?
Hi Patrick, A little bit may trickle out, but the majority of the fluid should stay in there for you. Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Thank you very much.
I'm having vibration at highway speeds on smooth roads. do my CV joints need replacing? 174XXX miles on original joints.
+Carl Br Thanks for watching! There could be multiple reasons you are experiencing this vibration. We always recommend having a trusted mechanic look at the vehicle. if you are unable to diagnose the issue! 1aauto.com
Probably just tires out of balance
Thanks for not answering my email. After watching your video, I purchased a 1AAuto.com CV AXLE, The clamps on the front boot allowed grease to leak out of both ends of the boot. I had to cut them off and replace them with better QUALITY ones. The original boot and clamps lasted 16 years (GM) and 200,000 miles. The 1AAuto.com CV AXLE boot clamps lasted about 6 months. Can you tell me what went wrong?
+Jacob Katari We are sorry that this has happened to the replacement part that you have purchased from us. If you would like to call our sales staff at 888-844-3393 we can take a look at you order for you and assist you with any issues that you may have.
Carl Br the Acadia had those problems and sometimes it could be a bent rim, water in the tires, balances of the tires, or bad or worn cv axle. The axle was my problem and it would vibrate around 30 mph and 65 mph.
You hoped that this would help me ote...and it did help me ote. Thanks
+lessevdoolbretsim Thank you! We are glad we could help.
Excellent video. Thanks guys.
Thanks for checking us out. 1aauto.com +alpinehs
if I'm replacing the hub assembly do I still have to unbolt the control arm to get the CV shaft out? Does removing the hub assembly give me enough room to change the CV shaft? What about changing the seal?
This video should help you with replacing the hub. We also replacement wheel hub bearing assemblies on our website for your GMC Envoy. Hope this helps you out 1aauto.com 866-403-3393 How To Install Repair Replace Front Wheel Hub Bearing Trailblazer Envoy 02-09 1AAuto.com
Does the CV axle hold the bearing in I won't to turn my trailblazer to 2wd I s it possible
+Jesse Eisert It depends on what type of bearing you purchase. The ones we carry for this vehicle can be installed on either 2 or 4 wheel drive, as they are held together by themselves. Here is a link to them: www.1aauto.com/wheel-bearing-and-hub-assembly-trq-bha53914/i/1ashf00039?f=213296&y=2003
Would this be similar to changing a cv on a 2009 gmc Acadia? Thanks
The process may be a little different on your application. We will keep this vehicle in mind for future videos.

You forgot to list the 35mm socket for the axle nut in tools
You left out where you show everything that is needed but the first nut you come to is 35 mm why was that not put in the list????
+Josh Rountree Thanks for the feedback!
If I remove the cv axles could I drive like that? Front diff is failing
+nastynate150 Thanks for watching! No, you cannot drive the vehicle without the axles. This is because the axle nut is actually keeping the bearing in place. If you uninstall the axles and drive the vehicle the bearing will fall apart, resulting in catastrophic failure. 1aauto.com
WHICH BEARING WILL FALL APART?
While its not recommended... you can actually drive it with the entire axle. Just make sure you have the end of the shaft with the axle nut still on.
Maybe a dumb question, but Im not completely understanding. If I put the axel back through the wheel bearing and put nut back on, I still have the end of the axel that came out of the differential ???
PLEASE tell me I did not see you use a torque wrench as a breaker bar!
I think he precracked it.
Is there an ABS tone ring on those CV axles?
Patrick Antone no
TONE RING AND SENSOR ARE ON THE HUB(WHEEL BEARING ASSEMBLY)
Thank you guys!
Pull the axel out if the wheel bearing first
+Time Table Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
Why don't you show the left hand removal
+Sabra Owen The application is the same for both driver and passenger sides.
Why not just replace the CV boots and regrease?
+Paul G Depending on the condition of the axle you can just reboot and regrease. Sometimes the condition of the CV joint inside has deteriorated due to road grime and debris getting in through the failed boot. In that case is it best to just replace it.
Did he REALLY break loose the axle nut and lug nuts with a torque wrench????
Dude is bad ass, huh?
Did you take those lug nuts off with a torque wrench? Why?
I bought the 1AAUTO.COM axle and guess what? After 6 months, the axle is leaking grease. What a disappointment.
+Jacob Katari We are extremely sorry that this part has failed on you. Please call our customer service staff at 888-844-3393 and we will take a look at your account for you. We strive for 100% total customer satisfaction.

I took care of the cv AXLE problem with new clamps.
