This is very real. I feel like I don't have anything else besides pacifying myself with endless noise or else the ennui suffocates me.

A topic I hope will be discussed more often all over. People use 'extremely/terminally online' as a quick insult these days but they don't take a deeper look and have an actual conversation about it beyond, "Touch grass." being the response. (Which is mostly used as another quick insult.)
Was nice to hear that I'm an electric meat sack hurtling through space though. (Reminded me of HK-47 calling us 'meat bags' lol) 😂

I don't own a smartphone anymore and I'm trying to cut off my home internet. You know what I remember the most over the past four years? sitting in the garden reading Gormenghast over a week during lockdown when i just turned my phone off. Scary stuff. This video needed to be made - thankyou.

I clicked on this out of curiosity and did not expect you would be describing me so exactly or in such detail.
    Damn.

The effect on memory is especially interesting. I work in information technology and I was talking with an older coworker yesterday and we both agreed that our ability to memorize technical things just isn't what it used to be. We don't remember things verbatim anymore, but we remember enough specifics of it to be able to quickly search and looked up. The fact that both of us were experiencing this now was interesting given our age differences. Maybe this just means that I am finally old at 39, but I have to imagine the amount of information we take in has at least some part in it.
Another great example of this s trying to recite something you read or saw online, but not really being able to. So you grab your phone and pull it up real quick to reference it or show someone an article and be able to speak to it again.

i had the internet at around age 13 in 2000 and i kind of do have nostalgia from the net of that era. it had its own spaces and wasnt centralized (at least not as bad as it is now). im glad i grew up in that era cuz at least i didn't have a fast enough internet (AOL user lol) to upload vids of myself!

I love you're analysis. I don't know if i agree with every, but there's a lot i can personally relate to. I agree that our brain have not evolved to handle a constant stream of data. I remember the phrase in the 90's was call "information overload". I didn't get my first smartphone until i was in my late 20's and it still had a noticeable effect on me. I can't imagine what it's like for kids growing up with this.

This is happening in large numbers, and I think you hit the nail on the head with one point. I think A LOT OF US are trying to find some way to get away from the offline world for a myriad of reasons.
Is touching grass even worth it, when you have to get on the freeway and drive 20 miles because you're in a suburb with no walkable areas? And don't forget, yeah I'm gonna say it, THIRD SPACES and the lack thereof. So many of us have so few ways to be communal outside of the Internet.
And with neither of those available, where else to people have to go. Was this too long a comment? Do I need to go? I love your hair, btw.

I think this video is really thought provoking and made me stop to think about myself. I'm just sharing some thoughts after watching this video.
This video is kind of scary because it does describe me to an extent. Sorta. The thing is, I don't often reference online stuff IRL, but part of that might be because I primarily communicate with my family and they aren't online much, so maybe that helps.
The thing about memory made me reflect on my time on the internet. I cannot remember every little detail, but I do remember them in clear broad strokes. I remember bits and pieces within these strokes and I can say that it made me who I am today, and I'm proud of it. Hell, I even remember where and how I found your channel.
I also had my own online gaming phase like you but I do remember a good deal of it. Again, I can't remember the exact details of everything, but I do remember why I enjoy playing these games. I know what brings me joy.
I don't think anyone would argue that social media is bad for you, but since I'm a very very very weird person, I'm doing pretty okay. Every single person I am friends with are either Paleontologists or fans of paleontology. So while yes, I do see stressful things once in awhile, more often than not, I am just reading and talking about paleontology and other hobbies with like minded folks. I'm willing to say 95% of the time my social media feed is like that. I think since I am so hyper focused on my niche, I don't deal with the same things as other people. I don't accept friend requests or send out friend requests unless you have multiple Paleontologists in your friends list. We're not comparing our lives on social media.
Still, I do wonder how it would affect me as I grow older. Even if I think I am doing okay, I can't deny that I have seen stressful things online. It's not often to the point where I dread going online but it still makes me wonder.

I see what you mean about memories of Baal runs and raids but I don't feel I have much more of school or vacations or whatever else one might expect to have more vivid memories of.

@@OsirisMalkovichavoid services that take away control of what you see. Twitter, instagram, tiktok are the worst offenders, but facebook and tumblr are stacked to the gills with reblogs and reposts too. Curate what you consume, choose to be where you are online. Thats the difference.
