y didn't u talk about the Dragon XR2 processor you forgot to bring up a lot of valid internal topics that are important to the evolution of VR. I think you should make a part 2 just talking about the internal upgrades and of course, the exterior will suck, Oculus and Facebook needed to cut a lot of corners to improve the device itself where they could but I'm surprised that they could put such a powerful processor and graphics card for such a cheap price. Not to mention half a day is not enough time to fully evaluate the Oculus Quest 2.0.
The Upgrades outweigh the Downgrades by so much. Better resolution, higher frame rate, better ergonomic controllers with better battery, better performance, upgradable headstrap, maybe more.

LCD isn't a downgrade from OLED. Sure, colours are more muted (some might say more natural!) And the blacks aren't inky black (I'll give you that one), but the lack of black smearing thats inherent to OLED, resolution bump, twice as many sub pixels, and the higher refresh rate is a definite upgrade. I'd argue that resolution (and less SDE!) and refresh rate have more of an impact on immersion than overly saturated colours and black blacks (given that that then results in smearing). I do wonder what something like the QLED samsung panels would be like in a HMD. They are essentially LCD panels, but have great black levels (again not as dark as OLED but much better than normal LCD).
In the quality comparison at 12:05 you compare edges of the screens for resolution differences. The Quest 1 uses fixed foveated rendering at all times whereas the Quest 2 does foveated rendering only on demand. John Carmack talked about this in his last talk. So the comparison doesn't make that much sens imho. Comparing the centers reflects better on what the player actually experiences I'd think.
Because something that costs a thousand dollars that also needs to be plugged into something that costs at LEAST that much is comparable to something that costs 300
I got the Quest 2 and I must say I am conflicted. You were the only reviewer (of many many many I watched) who mentioned the severe downgrade in the black tone. Blacks look more like grey. I find Bigscreen VR and Half-Life Alyx (Link) almost unusable. Especially in the latter, the “grey” darkness is immersion breaking.
That's a problem amplified by Link itself. Link transmits a video signal with reduced color range (HDMI limited range; your TV can be set to that too) which means the black levels are decreased. Using Virtual Desktop you can get the full range, but of course VD is not Link and may not work for you. I just got a new router just for my Quest 1 so I can replaced Link with VD, not because of it being wireless but for the shocking difference in quality vs. Link; it really looks bad and Oculus should hurry up and upgrade the video quality!
MadMaxBLD Maybe, but I find Vader Immortal immersion breaking too: Oh, the view. The light grey triangle of a Star Destroyer on the dark grey background of Space...
@@hammadsheikh6032 Interesting. I'm on Quest 1 and the LCD display on the new Quest is keeping me from upgrading too, because of the supposedly brighter blacks. But I guess it's either that or the more pronounced screen-door of the pen-tile OLED display the Q1 has...
MadMaxBLD Yeah. Yesterday, I was staring into a room corner in Half-Life Alyx (after hearing a head crab) and all I was seeing was a solid wall of grey... I am already looking forward to the Quest 3, hopefully with microLED display.
I was wondering why you hadn't uploaded a review 2 or 3 weeks ago. Mine will arrive between 15 - 20 October, I can't wait, to ry VR for the first time.
I have the quest 1 and I gotta say it is an absolutely amazing device. But the strap, front heavy-ness, and display quality definitely needed improvement...
14:44 I don’t understand what this means? I just ordered the quest 2 and I hope it’s not something very noticeable. Is he talking about the screen shaking?
I have the version 1 and 2. Something about the 2 makes me feel drunk or dizzy. Even the menus bounce a little like I sometimes nod. Try factory reset and changing from auto to 60Hz. I’ve gone back and forth between the headsets and don’t have this issue in version 1. Talking to support maybe something is off with mine. Otherwise the resolution is nicer but not worth it unless I can fix this issue
You must be being paid by Facebook. Giving 10 away to easily. No thanks Ill wait for the Q3 and maybe by then they will have dropped the required Facebook attachment. The Facebook attachment is actually the biggest reason I don't want the Q2. Facebook is free, the Quest 2 you pay for, one shouldn't control the other and it does. I will never use Facebook while in the Quest.
I ended up going with a Quest 1. The FOV is really what sold me on buying the 1 instead of the 2. The FOV is a lot smaller on the quest 2, I’d rather have a slightly worse resolution and a decent enough 72hz display with a wider FOV, than have my headset feel like i’m wearing goggles
Personally, I don't think I would bother having a lower fov, due to me wearing glasses, I'm used to turning my head to if I want to look at something, because It becomes out of focus otherwise.
The way of adjusting the lens for me is actually better because it’s less likely to get moved and re adjusted like the first oculus quest. Because if you put it down, the adjust slide could get moved
This is just my honest Opinion I purchased the Quest 2 and returned it Just because of the Black Levels was just not their. And wearing a Vr headsets the Black Level is what make the immersion. The highest end T.V main focus point is the Black levels and without it you have a regular sharp T.V...and I'm not Knocking the Sharp T.V but Caution when buying , I love Oculus Products I have been with Oculus sense Santa Cruz the first Vr headset. If you think that the Black levels don't matter you will have to see for yourself and maybe take a trip back to the Store...Quest 1 Still have great resolution and the difference between Quest 2 is only in a slight sharper edge and faster Processor but as far as better overall VR experience I don't think so...again Just my Opinion from a honest reviewer.... Great review ZoneofTech
It's both an upgrade and a downgrade, upgrade in terms of better performance, downgrade in terms of build quality and I think aesthetics too. For me, the worst part of it is the fact that you must have a Facebook account to use it. I will stick with my original Quest for now.
What throws me off besides the facebook requirement is the fact that the IPD is only 3 set distances that you don't have a slider or even a digital slider for. People were already pissed at the rift s for having a digital slider but this is worse by far
Feel like you missed a part about the IPD. It has 3 settings, Then you can use oculus software to fine tune it for anyone who is between those numbers. 61 etc.
Its not a MASSIVE upgrade you fool, a mediocre upgrade? sure. Im gonna wait a few more years until VR improves a lot more or when Xbox series X supports VR.
Waiting for Q3 now, hoping they will learn from their mistakes of Q2...hopefully Q3 will feature high (er) FOV and OLED kind of display but with no SDE (or much minimal SDE than Q1), bottom line is Q2 ain't as good as people may make you think it is and so we need Q3 to actually upgrade our wireless VR experience, for now I'm gonna use my old Q1 instead.
I just got the O2 and had an O1 for awhile, first thing I noticed is the boxy FOV on the O2, its a cheaper build, and quite frankly its visually like for like for me. I am mainly using my Quest1 for Virtual Desktop Steam VR gaming from my computer, which is an awesome combination. I love that the setup is wireless and I can play in a free room vs where my PC is which has limited mobility. My current take, skip the O2 if you have the O1 its not worth the upgrade, parts internally might be better, but build quality went backwards, manual lens adjustment vs slider, etc;
I got my Quest 2 today...I didn’t even try it on with the original strap. As soon as it came out of the box I was ripping that off and putting the Elite Strap on. 🤣🤣🤣
A phenomenal upgrade, especially when you increase the resolution via sidequest. Glad oled was dropped, black levels on og quest didn't defeat the screen door or low resolution which were the primary distracting issues. A clear, bright, higher refresh screen which actually features more accurate colours than OG Quest is a major win.
I think it’s upgrade, having both of them and still playing on the quest and quest 2 the battery life on the controllers are way longer on the quest 2! I’ve had it for 2 weeks and I haven’t had to change the battery’s in the controller(I play daily) and also the quest 2 looks so much better with 90FPS with the new 23 update 90FPS is enabled automatically it’s great
Nah they won't. Quest 2 games are basically android mobile phone games in VR. U need a pc to play steam games. Android games are limited to 2.5gb maximum size. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 are like 100gb.
Honestly.. I’m not that impressed.. it’s pretty rubbish watching a movie in prime or Netflix in a dark grey room, it’s like you’re sitting in a Smokey room.. so glad I didn’t get rid of my q1.. the colors are way better in the original quest..I’m glad I bought the q2, tried it, now I can stop thinking about it.. legit using my q1 until they optimise it better..I legit think it’s a downgrade.. if anyone thinking about buying it to replace the q1.. eh.. for me those black levels are a deal breaker..terrible..anyone who says otherwise is completely delusional..
Have a quest 1 and bought my son a quest 2. It really is a nice upgrade in resolution, I can tell going back and forth. 90hz in menus and browsing so that's nice. Can use the web browser and reading or watching movies is a lot better. Debating upgrading mine at this point. It has the downsides mentioned here in video and the IPD for me is better on 1 than 2. I'm at 61 and so in between the 58 or 63 setting not quite right for either setting but doable. Have some games that did get the upgrade and it's nice. Seems like a cheap vr for the price even for the 256Gb version.
lol IMO The Quest 2 is MUCH WORSE than the Quest one... The Quest 2 speakers are way worse due to the fact that the vibrate on your face... The Straps are to tight or too loose and hurt OVER TIME... The blacks (oled) is a HUGE downgrade to the Quest one... The big caveats is how upgradable the Quest 2 is compared to the Quest one... and weather you use PC link... If you use PC link and pixel mods to boost pixel density, the Quest one is way BETTER than the Quest 2 stand alone... It has better IPD, better blacks, more comfortable, better strap... and better sound... If you have a Quest one than the HP reverb 2 is the better upgrade at 600 bucks but its wired... however its much better headset over all including graphics.
Watched the video but not sure if I totally understood. So if anyone could answer, that would be great! 1) Will my games from Quest 1 transfer to Quest 2?? Like Onward and Beatsaber. 2) Will a lot of my current accessories from Quest 1 be able to be used on the Quest 2?? Such as my VR Shell, controller grips from AMVR, or even my current VR Cover replacement face pad. 3) Will the elite strap with battery really be worth it compared to the regular elite strap??
You'll be able to play all your Quest games purchased, on Quest 2 - but the reviewer did mention that if you've already started a game on Quest 1, you can't continue that game on Quest 2...instead you'd have to start the game from the beginning again in order to play on Quest 2.
I'm getting mine for Christmas so I'm just binge-watching all these types of vids to see what I can get from them. Just 4 more days to go! Can't wait!! (and I am a first time Vr user, so this will be really exciting for me!)
Probably something calm, so you dont get motion sick. There is a system for how intense the experiences will feel and in the beginning you should try out the comfortable ones. I love my quest and hopefully you will too!😁
Go for games without artificial locomotion first. Stuff like table tennis, pool, sit-down experiences, teleportation-based locomotion. Once your "VR legs" grow, you can move on to more intense stuff where you move artificially. End of the line is hardcore stuff like 6-DOF space shooters; rolling in VR messes with your brain! :P Oh, and do play "First Steps" and "First Contact", both from Oculus and both are free. Nice experiences to start off with.
This was a pre-release version of the headset. That said, OLED has deeper blacks than LCD in the Quest 2 so there will be a difference - but not nearly as extreme as what is shown in this video.
@@ULTIMATEPATCHES it has nothing to do with the pre-release The original quest had an OLED screen which has better blacks than the quest 2's LCD screen..
Am I the only one who thought the quest 1 sucked? I bought it, and the pain was unwithstandable after 20 minutes, blurry at almost all angles, frontheavy, laggy in vr chat, etc, etc. Glad oculus 2 fixed a lot of the problems
@Dusk to me oleds are still superior over lcd tough, maybe oculus quest 3 will have an oled display till then for me at least the oculus quest 1 is more than enough
I hope you don't hate me for pointing this out, but the Quest 1's OLED screen also has a pretty bad ghosting issue, which actually results in full echos, a few milliseconds behind, when pixels change between dark and bright colors. On the Oculus menu, look at a bright white Application icon, like the one for the RUclips VR app, then move your head around, following the icon's logo with your eyes as your head moves. If you do it at just the right speed, you'll see a complete-readable echo of the Icon's logo/name, inside the white area of the icon, as you move. I tend to notice it a lot in certain bright games like Cloudlands2 and even Rec Room at times.. Once you see it, it's hard to unsee.. :/ If Quest 2 doesn't have that, I'll be happy.
MASSIVE upgrade in many ways. Resolution, screen door effect, roomscale, tracked touch controllers, access to VR games on Steam and Oculus Store... for example :)
I have all sorts of problems with what Facebook has been doing and my privacy is the least of it. Even so I could use it as a wireless headset for PCVR but my IPD is far enough from the presets that the higher resolution would have no benefit.
I need to say for the Performance its netter top i Played onward in quest 1 and it always crashes After 3 rounds abaout 15 min it Starts to lag and then the quest locks an broken Image and you need it to force shutdown the oculus so i Think the more RAM and the better Prozessor is worth it

I want to get a Vr headset to play phasmophobia, any ideas. You mentioned a gray like pattern for dark/black rooms with the quest 2
i kmnow im late but note that phasmophobia is not on the quest unless you use link to a good pc
Will horror games not be as good because of the black levels?

@@notChocoMilk do U know the reason for this. I think it’s to reduce godrays but I’m not sure

Well if u can’t use side load apps and use custom songs it’s definitely a downgrade if not its a upgrade.
You can sideload its better in everyway
The screen is not "a bit of a downgrade" from last year's Oculus 1 screen.
Exactly. It's a huge upgrade overall.
The only downgrade is the fact that it’s an LCD which I have no problem with at all, and I’m still getting it.
My only problem is money😂
I have the quest 1 and I gotta say it is an absolutely amazing device. But the strap, front heavy-ness, and display quality definitely needed improvement...
I really want the robot character in vadar immortal to make some sort of appearance, it truly was my favorite character. I think the name is ZO-E3
14:44 I don’t understand what this means? I just ordered the quest 2 and I hope it’s not something very noticeable. Is he talking about the screen shaking?
Yes but it's not very noticeable at all I have the quest 2 and it hasnt done it for me or I haven't seen it if it has happened.
KILL3R_KHa0 Ok thanks so much! 👍🏼
KILL3R_KHa0 And will the 90 HZ option fix this?
From OLED to LED, that is already a massive deal breaker.
Such a bargain 100 dollars off! That's very good :DD
and that’s why I was suspicious of the quest 2. but turns out there is no reason to be.
@@littlebipolardevil how much is it in total
You must be being paid by Facebook. Giving 10 away to easily. No thanks Ill wait for the Q3 and maybe by then they will have dropped the required Facebook attachment. The Facebook attachment is actually the biggest reason I don't want the Q2. Facebook is free, the Quest 2 you pay for, one shouldn't control the other and it does. I will never use Facebook while in the Quest.

I ended up going with a Quest 1. The FOV is really what sold me on buying the 1 instead of the 2. The FOV is a lot smaller on the quest 2,
I’d rather have a slightly worse resolution and a decent enough 72hz display with a wider FOV, than have my headset feel like i’m wearing goggles

Honestly ill keep using my quest for a few years until the performance with the newest headsets are greatly improved.

Tyg Well yes that is what I meant. I plan on using it with my PC.

Was about to have dinner. Was searching for a good video.

Thanks for this excellent timing bro
61 etc.
I couldn't find that anywhere in the sertings
I am gonna wait a bit for the quest 2 until they go 2nd hand for really cheap
Me: *Sees title*
Also me: W H A T
As a user of both, QUEST 2 IS A MASSIVE UPGRADE.
I just got the O2 and had an O1 for awhile, first thing I noticed is the boxy FOV on the O2, its a cheaper build, and quite frankly its visually like for like for me. I am mainly using my Quest1 for Virtual Desktop Steam VR gaming from my computer, which is an awesome combination. I love that the setup is wireless and I can play in a free room vs where my PC is which has limited mobility.
My current take, skip the O2 if you have the O1 its not worth the upgrade, parts internally might be better, but build quality went backwards, manual lens adjustment vs slider, etc;
I got my Quest 2 today...I didn’t even try it on with the original strap. As soon as it came out of the box I was ripping that off and putting the Elite Strap on. 🤣🤣🤣
Lol
"slightly worse graphics" hahaha lol... Graphics don't compare, but the experience does.
16:14, in death gameplay? or in depth...?
A phenomenal upgrade, especially when you increase the resolution via sidequest. Glad oled was dropped, black levels on og quest didn't defeat the screen door or low resolution which were the primary distracting issues. A clear, bright, higher refresh screen which actually features more accurate colours than OG Quest is a major win.

Have some games that did get the upgrade and it's nice. lol IMO The Quest 2 is MUCH WORSE than the Quest one...

You'll be able to play all your Quest games purchased, on Quest 2 - but the reviewer did mention that if you've already started a game on Quest 1, you can't continue that game on Quest 2...instead you'd have to start the game from the beginning again in order to play on Quest 2.

I guess black levels is going to be an issue with movies, not good.
This was a pre-release version of the headset. That said, OLED has deeper blacks than LCD in the Quest 2 so there will be a difference - but not nearly as extreme as what is shown in this video.

@Dusk to me oleds are still superior over lcd tough, maybe oculus quest 3 will have an oled display till then for me at least the oculus quest 1 is more than enough
On the IPD slider you can halfway switch it so you can get more in between adjustments
Going from oled to lcd is a downgrade by itself. But the higher resolution might make up for it
Ya dumb
It takes much more time for OLED pixels to turn on than to change colour, so there is smudging, thats why its not really often used
I hope you don't hate me for pointing this out, but the Quest 1's OLED screen also has a pretty bad ghosting issue, which actually results in full echos, a few milliseconds behind, when pixels change between dark and bright colors.
I am upgrading to a quest 2 from a PSVR. Do you think it will be a big upgrade?
MASSIVE upgrade in many ways. Resolution, screen door effect, roomscale, tracked touch controllers, access to VR games on Steam and Oculus Store... for example :)
ULTIMATE PATCHES so the Quest 2 controllers have finger tracking? (Also I do not own a PC so sidequest is useless)
I have all sorts of problems with what Facebook has been doing and my privacy is the least of it. Even so I could use it as a wireless headset for PCVR but my IPD is far enough from the presets that the higher resolution would have no benefit.
I need to say for the Performance its netter top i Played onward in quest 1 and it always crashes After 3 rounds abaout 15 min it Starts to lag and then the quest locks an broken Image and you need it to force shutdown the oculus so i Think the more RAM and the better Prozessor is worth it
still no reason for me to upgrade... idk no big games out there where i can say ok its worth... so far the quest1 is just fine tbh
All new games should release on both Quest and Quest 2. So there is real no reasons to upgrade other than the mechanics inside of the Quest 2.
