I don't care if the Super Ultra Omega Quest 9000 comes out by Christmas, I'd rather have the freedom to buy better stuff sooner rather than later. These aren't Gucci bags and I ain't trying to impress anyone by having "the best" for bragging rights.

Straps are like pillows, very personal so even if it was above average it won't make everyone comfortable. Plus third parties will ALWAYS make better accessories than the original

That screen quality looks insane, especially for the price. Really glad they leaned in the direction of better modability as well. With how a lot of people customized their Quest1s to suit their needs I'm glad they prioritized the screen, processor and weight reduction over things that can be easily modded by us like the strap and audio.

For me, significant resolution improvement is a must for an upgrade. 50% more pixels translates to about 20% in each axis - borderline for a decision. But adding the much more powerful xr2 processor clinches the deal. So upgrade it is !
if you don't have a quest: yes if you have a quest: not really necessary, just quality of life. May need to upgrade once games stop being pushed for quest 1. but maybe i'm biased cause i have the link
Let's give some appreciation to the horizontal position of the USB-C this go around, making it much less awkward for most 90-degree connectors (like the official Link cable). Granted, it's likely mostly for the convenience of the Elite Strap+Battery, but will be a boon for Link users, as well.
I'm getting a Quest 2 upgrading my Rift S because i'm moving somewhere, where i may not have enough room in the same place i keep my gaming PC Also i want to be able to share VR with some of my friends after the whole pandemic thing goes away (hopefully) So i figured i'd make the jump. Quest 2 seems to make a big enough leap that it would be playable solo and also playable as a PC headset should i wish to use it. So i'm very excited to get it. I also ordered the pro headstrap too with the extra battery because i'm fortunate enough to already have my VR legs and had VR since the vive came out so i'm proun to long gaming sessions in VR.
Too bad its not really a comparison. Since video is not direct pass through quest will never be the same as running a video cable to a dedicated pcvr headset. My quest is for bed and on the go not playing pcvr.
I have a g2 on order, but I still love my original vive. I think I'm going to stick with my vive for anything I want to use full body or knuckles for, and use the g2 for any sit down vr stuff like fs2020 cars3 and elite dangerous. So much vr 😄 absolutely love it
As a dev, I have to upgrade. It pains me to have to buy another headset so soon, but I have to be able to support both headsets for the time being. I hope we don't see another major upgrade for at least two years, but the way stuff is moving we may be doing this again in a year. Hopefully, $300 is now the base price for a headset.

I researched before I bought my quest 2, it has the best graphic resolution per square inch , best hand tracking , best refresh rate too. 300 not too bad especially for a headset that comes with everything the quest comes with and than virtual pc... crazy technology advancements . I suspect my quest 2 will last me 2-3 years max before I need to upgrade all my components together including my Laptop.
A good piece of advice: Wait. Wait a few months, and see, what follows up with it. I own a Quest, and I also considered upgrading, but it's always best to wait it out. Maybe in a few months, I will upgrade, but right now I'm very happy with my Quest, so I won't upgrade right now, and I recommend, that you do the same. But if you just want the newest, go ahead and buy it. Do what you feel is the best :) . But please, always, ALWAYS, reconsider.
I bought my Quest a few months before the Quest 2 was announced. I love my Quest and will keep using it until it breaks or they quit supporting it as the Quest works great for my setup and I have gotten used to the comfort issues on the original. I’m not a fan of how they removed the eye space adjuster on the quest 2 as it was a great feature for sharing and fine tuning. I’m also not a fan of the white as I can see the headset and controllers getting dirty pretty quickly.
There’s still a eye space adjuster on the Quest 2 and as for the getting dirty part, either don’t have kids and be the only one using it , nice a clean problem solved
I can understand your point, but oculus is owned by Facebook, and it’s obvious they want to promote their platform integration. I think we will be able to not use it.
@@AtrusDesign It is obvious. The sad thing is the consumers were lied too by facebook since they stated the occulus headsets would never require an account. Even if no one trusts what facebook says anyway. Its more out of principle. I'll probably keep the quest 1 and end up going for a more baller higher res headset on a different platform few more years later when software dev increases for VR. I just hope that their will be more competition in the standalone VR console market against facebook even if I have to pay $1000+.
@@chukah9484 It could be that the Chinese will be the first in line to pick up the consumers Facebook drops with their bulldozer-like FB promotion strategy, which lets them hand these new sets out at, I don't know, half the price.. Pico already have somewhat similar headsets Pico Neo 2 and Neo 2 Eye (with eye tracking), but they are "business oriented" (read: much more expensive ;)). However, I would keep en eye on their software store on pico-interactive.com. They are currently selling some very good 3DOF games that are also available for Oculus Go like Eqqo or Deadalus, but their 6DOF lineup is weak. I suppose this is because their 6DOF headsets are very new and, ahem, "business oriented", while their 3DOF headsets have been around for a while. But how this app store develops over time will be a very good indicator of their potential in this field. Basically, if they want a piece of this, they now must talk with all those game production companies and convince them to port for them or, better yet, develop exclusives. I suppose Chinese companies would be more willing to make exclusives for them, but are there any really strong Chinese development companies able of producing a AAA VR game right now? Anyways, I am rooting for European tech companies which are also in it, but at the moment they are behind the first two, it appears. Overall, I think now the race is on for who produces a considerably smaller device first. Half a kilo box cannot put mobile VR into the mainstream, imho. I think that's why companies like Apple seem to be indifferent to what Facebook is doing with these headsets. On the other hand, they cannot be indifferent to Facebook AR glasses project.. That could be where big money really is.
@@uncutfishing yeah I imagine it will take that lighter/ more portable AR glasses product by apple to really push the VR adoption into the mainstream space as apple will always have that cult-like following in the mainstream. I hope that apple is waiting for it to be very slim and practical for early adopters so that those AR glasses aren't DOA and prevent VR growth. Those apple customers adopting and slowly introducing people into AR from a practical standpoint will be much more beneficial for VR. Ultimately you are right. Whomever has the most portable headset or best games/software support is what will dominate marketshare. Who ever can keep their OS more open and give developers more tools will likely see the win on the software side and gain a lot of customer favor. Still VR in the mainstream still feels like many years away especially with the graphic fidelity that modern desktops are achieving these days. We need a much larger software library for VR before its practical and its a pity that currently AAA developers are avoiding VR as that market is so small it isn't worth the investment to them vs desktop. With how far away VR is from competing with desktop it feels like Elon Musks neuralink will beat VR headset development. I'm hoping in the more near future Arm+NvidiaGPU chip designs will advance VR headsets closer to x86 desktops and that hype train hardware wise I could see getting more VR / development adoption.

No. I think thats safe to say. The quest lenses were shit compared to the index lenses. So there you go. You need good lenses for great optics. So where screen resolution may be close they won't be close.
Thanks for the review. Is it just me or does the quest 2 not render certain um shall we say VR 'Movies' hint hint as well as the original Quest? I've tried 4K, and 5K 'movies' on the Quest 2 and it seems that the motion is not as smooth. On the original Quest the VR Movies are sharp and movements are fluid (no pun intended), lol..

I don’t have any VR headset, I wanted to get a quest 1, so I’ll definitely get a Quest 2. I’ll also probably get the 256gb version since I know I’ll never run out of space if I do.
I have been following VR content for a year now. I got birthday money to buy the Oculus Quest 1 but had trouble ordering it, so I decided to put it off and use half my money to get something else. I planned to get the Oculus Quest 1 when I was actually able to and had the money again but then I heard the announcement of a potential Oculus Quest 2 and didn't spend any of my money until it came out. So when I heard it was only $299 I immediately called a friend living in the states if I could ship it to his house and he was kind enough to say yes. I can't wait for my Oculus Quest 2! I have been following for so long now and am so excited! Thanks Tyriel Wood for all your help! Love your channel! You deserve more than 1 million subs!
I was really hyped for the Quest 2 but the fact that the IPD is locked into 3 positions is terrible, my ipd is 65 so it’s right between two of them. Oculus has basically officially left enthusiasts behind in exchange for a lower price. I’ll just get an index for my next headset.
Already sold my Q1 and got exactly enough to pre-order the Q2. I do wonder why they didn't take the battery pack out of the front and put it at the back of the strap instead. Or they could have made it removable somehow so people could do that if they upgraded the strap. Edit: I was thinking about the IPD thing also, I think if your IPD falls between the presets you could 3d print some spacers that would force the lens to where you need them to be.
Hope Oculus can update Oculus Link quickly so that it can make use of the Quest2 hardware. The OG Quest video stream bitrate is limited to around 150Mbps (4k 60hz H.265) because of the performance of Snapdragon 835. XR2 can support 8k 60hz so now the Oculus Link can have higher bitrate and provide much better image.
I like the quest 1 because I like black VR more and my cousin has the quest 2 which is white but quest 1 is black and it will be easy to reconize because black Oculus belongs to me and the white Oculus belongs to my cousin
The thing that might make a big difference on that front would be the XR2 chip might do better composition once, it's optimized, but it's using the same cable as the original quest, so it might not make a huge difference. Another question I'd have is if they can do some of the processing on the XR2 chip, so less processing is required on the pc.
Aviel Hazan one would think but it looks like it still just does compressed encoding. So it’s not really the PC pushing the frames it’s the quest internals. The PC is just rendering like it usually would
that's cause the Q2 isn't actually that big of an upgrade when you look at it. they made it more affordable and increased the performance a bit. i feel their aim is to get more people into their VR products. not necessarily to make their existing user base feel like they need to upgrade.
If you are buying a quest as first headset then the new is good option. If you feel like upgrading though i think oculus really gave a big slice of the cake to the resolution and processor and left less cake for build quality and display on the newer quest.
The software is insanely different wtf 😂 the quest 2 blows the first one out of the water with insanely higher visual quality and performance. It also allows more ai meaning you can do and see more that the quest one can’t handle
Quintin Bey do you need to look at the comparison chart with how powerful they are side by side. The quest 2 shits on the original pretty bad. Better visuals and more powerful allowing it to play games. With this processor we should be able to see PC avatars in VR chat finally cuz the original quest wasn’t powerful enough for that

This is the first video that I've seen from you and I'd like to say thank you lol In my opinion, I think that Quest 1 is better because it will take a bit for all the games on it to be available on Quest 2, but I can see why people would like Quest 2 more. Thanks for making this video, I bet it would've helped a lot of people!
BTW the Quest cameras are sensitive to infared light, thats why they are black and white and grainy in passthrough. We had in altspacevr, a guy claimed he thought hus cellphone was actively recording him because he could see a blinking light from the cellphone inside the quest headset, maybe but you'll probably also see the light from your tv controller, I haven't tried it. Those cameras are for tracking the room and the controllers.
@@rblxmach People need to stop this "4k" or "higher than Index resolution" argument. The Quest never reached it's full resolution and neither will the Quest 2. In stand alone mode it's bottlenecked by the chipset and with Link it's bottlenecked by the low compression bitrate. You will never even get close to the full resolution. Lens and panel quality is way more important and PCVR headsets run at the full panel resolution because they have actual displayports, that's why the Index still has way better image quality than 8k VR headsets. John Carmack himself said that it will take years for a good chipset to come out that will support Quest 2 resolutions. Same reason why he said that the Oculus Go actually has the best image quality out of all Oculus headsets. It's the same problem with console and PC specs, everyone wants to be an expert but just blindly focus on the price and don't understand the actual specs.

How are the black levels of the Quest 2 compared to the Rift S or Valve Index? I thought the Rift S was very bad. The Index isn't great, but much better than Rift S. Also for FOV. Since it is one screen like the Rift S, does it have that very square FOV or a little more rounded like Quest 1?
@@noahhennessy738 I know, that's why I was asking compared to 2 other lcd screens. Rift S blacks were pretty bad. I'm hoping there is improvement over it. Lcd screens can get pretty good blacks.
In the Ars Technica review, the author said he had to lodge the ipd between two settings to get a clear view, also he said you had to change the head strap everytime you put the headset on. And this guy missed it, the controllers contain less infared tracking lights. This is me: If you've looked through the passthrough in a quest 1, you can see the tracking lights on the controllers light up every now and then, I imagine the cameras are of a higher frequency and so are the lights, and the correlate the locations of the lights they see to determine where the controllers are in 3D space, if you use less lights the accuracy will be less, and the location must be correct or your hands would shake a bunch. You know that if you put your hands behind your head on the Quest 1, the tracking is lost but you can still orient them, so the hands fly away, until you shake the controllers in front of the headset and tracking returns. I wonder if the Rifts do it different because of the monitors.
It almost feels personal when you finally get your FIRST VR headset, and only a couple months later they release a " new, improved, superior model". Every ad seems like they're calling you stupid for buying a product that people "used" to love.
Even if it's 2 weeks like at Best Buy, you might be able to get an exception for the product being discontinued just after the 2 week window was closed.

Maybe we can cut the strap from the Quest 2, salvage just the plastic parts and use it as an adapter for the halo strap. I guess it won't be as loose as before without the plastic parts of the clip?
I have the original Oculus CV1, and this appears to be a great headset, but I went with the HP Reverb G2. I think its superior, and with my original Oculus, I can still play all the games I have on Oculus already. Great breakdown Tyriel

It seems irresponsible not to mention something that critical to the headsets function, something which also has a chance to significantly worsen the future of VR. As a VR enthusiast, I would assume you care about the future of VR. Why haven't you mentioned this at all? It seems very misleading to recommend the headset without a disclaimer that you have to allow facebook to record and track your activity and words in VR. Please do better.

I'd suggest the majority of the additional power of the new chip will be going toward driving the higher res and refresh rate. If you can accept the lower res and refresh, I doubt you'll see any other real difference in rendered image quality between quest 1 and 2
The FOV is identical to the Rift S. Though they made the headset smaller, they also designed the lens to fit closer to the eyes, enabling a larger field of vision than previous builds.
Sorry if you already covered this but can you talk about the performance on link/virtual desktop between the og quest and the new one? I feel like they might have done some stuff we don’t know about yet to make it better on the quest 2

For me, significant resolution improvement is a must for an upgrade. 50% more pixels translates to about 20% in each axis - borderline for a decision. But adding the much more powerful xr2 processor clinches the deal. So upgrade it is !

Let's give some appreciation to the horizontal position of the USB-C this go around, making it much less awkward for most 90-degree connectors (like the official Link cable). Granted, it's likely mostly for the convenience of the Elite Strap+Battery, but will be a boon for Link users, as well.
I'm getting a Quest 2 upgrading my Rift S because i'm moving somewhere, where i may not have enough room in the same place i keep my gaming PC Also i want to be able to share VR with some of my friends after the whole pandemic thing goes away (hopefully) So i figured i'd make the jump.
Quest 2 seems to make a big enough leap that it would be playable solo and also playable as a PC headset should i wish to use it. So i'm very excited to get it. I also ordered the pro headstrap too with the extra battery because i'm fortunate enough to already have my VR legs and had VR since the vive came out so i'm proun to long gaming sessions in VR.
A wise choice, since link is the same as rift s if you were to choose to use it. Hope you enjoy!

I have a g2 on order, but I still love my original vive. I think I'm going to stick with my vive for anything I want to use full body or knuckles for, and use the g2 for any sit down vr stuff like fs2020 cars3 and elite dangerous. So much vr 😄 absolutely love it

As a dev, I have to upgrade. It pains me to have to buy another headset so soon, but I have to be able to support both headsets for the time being. I hope we don't see another major upgrade for at least two years, but the way stuff is moving we may be doing this again in a year. Hopefully, $300 is now the base price for a headset.

I researched before I bought my quest 2, it has the best graphic resolution per square inch , best hand tracking , best refresh rate too. 300 not too bad especially for a headset that comes with everything the quest comes with and than virtual pc... crazy technology advancements . I suspect my quest 2 will last me 2-3 years max before I need to upgrade all my components together including my Laptop.
A good piece of advice: Wait. Wait a few months, and see, what follows up with it. I own a Quest, and I also considered upgrading, but it's always best to wait it out. I bought my Quest a few months before the Quest 2 was announced. I love my Quest and will keep using it until it breaks or they quit supporting it as the Quest works great for my setup and I have gotten used to the comfort issues on the original. I’m not a fan of how they removed the eye space adjuster on the quest 2 as it was a great feature for sharing and fine tuning. I’m also not a fan of the white as I can see the headset and controllers getting dirty pretty quickly.
There’s still a eye space adjuster on the Quest 2 and as for the getting dirty part, either don’t have kids and be the only one using it , nice a clean problem solved

@@AtrusDesign It is obvious. The sad thing is the consumers were lied too by facebook since they stated the occulus headsets would never require an account. Even if no one trusts what facebook says anyway. Its more out of principle. I'll probably keep the quest 1 and end up going for a more baller higher res headset on a different platform few more years later when software dev increases for VR. I just hope that their will be more competition in the standalone VR console market against facebook even if I have to pay $1000+.
@@chukah9484 It could be that the Chinese will be the first in line to pick up the consumers Facebook drops with their bulldozer-like FB promotion strategy, which lets them hand these new sets out at, I don't know, half the price.. Pico already have somewhat similar headsets Pico Neo 2 and Neo 2 Eye (with eye tracking), but they are "business oriented" (read: much more expensive ;)). However, I would keep en eye on their software store on pico-interactive.com. They are currently selling some very good 3DOF games that are also available for Oculus Go like Eqqo or Deadalus, but their 6DOF lineup is weak. I suppose this is because their 6DOF headsets are very new and, ahem, "business oriented", while their 3DOF headsets have been around for a while. But how this app store develops over time will be a very good indicator of their potential in this field. Basically, if they want a piece of this, they now must talk with all those game production companies and convince them to port for them or, better yet, develop exclusives. I suppose Chinese companies would be more willing to make exclusives for them, but are there any really strong Chinese development companies able of producing a AAA VR game right now? Anyways, I am rooting for European tech companies which are also in it, but at the moment they are behind the first two, it appears.
Overall, I think now the race is on for who produces a considerably smaller device first. Half a kilo box cannot put mobile VR into the mainstream, imho. I think that's why companies like Apple seem to be indifferent to what Facebook is doing with these headsets. On the other hand, they cannot be indifferent to Facebook AR glasses project.. That could be where big money really is.
@@uncutfishing yeah I imagine it will take that lighter/ more portable AR glasses product by apple to really push the VR adoption into the mainstream space as apple will always have that cult-like following in the mainstream. I hope that apple is waiting for it to be very slim and practical for early adopters so that those AR glasses aren't DOA and prevent VR growth. Those apple customers adopting and slowly introducing people into AR from a practical standpoint will be much more beneficial for VR. Ultimately you are right. Whomever has the most portable headset or best games/software support is what will dominate marketshare. Who ever can keep their OS more open and give developers more tools will likely see the win on the software side and gain a lot of customer favor. Still VR in the mainstream still feels like many years away especially with the graphic fidelity that modern desktops are achieving these days. We need a much larger software library for VR before its practical and its a pity that currently AAA developers are avoiding VR as that market is so small it isn't worth the investment to them vs desktop. With how far away VR is from competing with desktop it feels like Elon Musks neuralink will beat VR headset development. I'm hoping in the more near future Arm+NvidiaGPU chip designs will advance VR headsets closer to x86 desktops and that hype train hardware wise I could see getting more VR / development adoption.

No. I think thats safe to say. The quest lenses were shit compared to the index lenses. So there you go. You need good lenses for great optics. So where screen resolution may be close they won't be close.

Thanks for the review. Is it just me or does the quest 2 not render certain um shall we say VR 'Movies' hint hint as well as the original Quest? I've tried 4K, and 5K 'movies' on the Quest 2 and it seems that the motion is not as smooth. On the original Quest the VR Movies are sharp and movements are fluid (no pun intended), lol..

I was really hyped for the Quest 2 but the fact that the IPD is locked into 3 positions is terrible, my ipd is 65 so it’s right between two of them. Oculus has basically officially left enthusiasts behind in exchange for a lower price. I’ll just get an index for my next headset.

Already sold my Q1 and got exactly enough to pre-order the Q2. I do wonder why they didn't take the battery pack out of the front and put it at the back of the strap instead. Or they could have made it removable somehow so people could do that if they upgraded the strap.
Edit: I was thinking about the IPD thing also, I think if your IPD falls between the presets you could 3d print some spacers that would force the lens to where you need them to be.

Hope Oculus can update Oculus Link quickly so that it can make use of the Quest2 hardware. The OG Quest video stream bitrate is limited to around 150Mbps (4k 60hz H.265) because of the performance of Snapdragon 835. XR2 can support 8k 60hz so now the Oculus Link can have higher bitrate and provide much better image.
I like the quest 1 because I like black VR more and my cousin has the quest 2 which is white but quest 1 is black and it will be easy to reconize because black Oculus belongs to me and the white Oculus belongs to my cousin

The thing that might make a big difference on that front would be the XR2 chip might do better composition once, it's optimized, but it's using the same cable as the original quest, so it might not make a huge difference. Another question I'd have is if they can do some of the processing on the XR2 chip, so less processing is required on the pc.

that's cause the Q2 isn't actually that big of an upgrade when you look at it. they made it more affordable and increased the performance a bit. i feel their aim is to get more people into their VR products. not necessarily to make their existing user base feel like they need to upgrade.

If you are buying a quest as first headset then the new is good option.
If you feel like upgrading though i think oculus really gave a big slice of the cake to the resolution and processor and left less cake for build quality and display on the newer quest.
I'm gonna stick with the Quest 1 since the build quality seems better and the software is essentially the same.
The software is insanely different wtf 😂 the quest 2 blows the first one out of the water with insanely higher visual quality and performance. It also allows more ai meaning you can do and see more that the quest one can’t handle

This is the first video that I've seen from you and I'd like to say thank you lol In my opinion, I think that Quest 1 is better because it will take a bit for all the games on it to be available on Quest 2, but I can see why people would like Quest 2 more. BTW the Quest cameras are sensitive to infared light, thats why they are black and white and grainy in passthrough. We had in altspacevr, a guy claimed he thought hus cellphone was actively recording him because he could see a blinking light from the cellphone inside the quest headset, maybe but you'll probably also see the light from your tv controller, I haven't tried it. Those cameras are for tracking the room and the controllers.
The price point of Quest 2 is pretty sweet. Ebay prices for 2nd hand Quest 1's have dropped by about half as well which is good.

@@rblxmach People need to stop this "4k" or "higher than Index resolution" argument. The Quest never reached it's full resolution and neither will the Quest 2. In stand alone mode it's bottlenecked by the chipset and with Link it's bottlenecked by the low compression bitrate.
You will never even get close to the full resolution. Lens and panel quality is way more important and PCVR headsets run at the full panel resolution because they have actual displayports, that's why the Index still has way better image quality than 8k VR headsets.
John Carmack himself said that it will take years for a good chipset to come out that will support Quest 2 resolutions. Same reason why he said that the Oculus Go actually has the best image quality out of all Oculus headsets.
It's the same problem with console and PC specs, everyone wants to be an expert but just blindly focus on the price and don't understand the actual specs.

How are the black levels of the Quest 2 compared to the Rift S or Valve Index? I thought the Rift S was very bad. The Index isn't great, but much better than Rift S. Also for FOV. Since it is one screen like the Rift S, does it have that very square FOV or a little more rounded like Quest 1?

In the Ars Technica review, the author said he had to lodge the ipd between two settings to get a clear view, also he said you had to change the head strap everytime you put the headset on. And this guy missed it, the controllers contain less infared tracking lights. This is me: If you've looked through the passthrough in a quest 1, you can see the tracking lights on the controllers light up every now and then, I imagine the cameras are of a higher frequency and so are the lights, and the correlate the locations of the lights they see to determine where the controllers are in 3D space, if you use less lights the accuracy will be less, and the location must be correct or your hands would shake a bunch. You know that if you put your hands behind your head on the Quest 1, the tracking is lost but you can still orient them, so the hands fly away, until you shake the controllers in front of the headset and tracking returns. I wonder if the Rifts do it different because of the monitors.

I'm curious why you never mentioned that you have to give up your privacy to facebook in order to use the quest 2. It seems irresponsible not to mention something that critical to the headsets function, something which also has a chance to significantly worsen the future of VR. As a VR enthusiast, I would assume you care about the future of VR. Why haven't you mentioned this at all? It seems very misleading to recommend the headset without a disclaimer that you have to allow facebook to record and track your activity and words in VR. Please do better.

I'd suggest the majority of the additional power of the new chip will be going toward driving the higher res and refresh rate. If you can accept the lower res and refresh, I doubt you'll see any other real difference in rendered image quality between quest 1 and 2
that looks tiny - can you do an FOV measurement comparison in ROV app
The FOV is identical to the Rift S. Though they made the headset smaller, they also designed the lens to fit closer to the eyes, enabling a larger field of vision than previous builds.
