‘The Song of Durin’ wasn’t actually in any of the movies. It is from the first book of ‘The Lord of The Rings’ trilogy. When they make camp while journeying through Moria, Gimli sings the song to the fellowship to help them better understand the history of the dwarves(/the realm of Moria).
It is always the best to see LotR fans react to his Tolkien covers 😁😁 him and his team put so much effort into all of this, and fans can truly appreciate the details and easter eggs
This is the song Gimli sang as the Fellowship traveled through Moria in the first book of the LotR trilogy (and that Galadriel referenced later in Lorien.) Tolkien wrote it as a poem, but Geoff based the music on a version by Clamavi De Profundis. The set is a loose recreation of Balin's tomb in the Chamber of Mazarbul, where the Fellowship was attacked by the orcs and troll. Thorin, Fili and Kili had died in the Battle of Five Armies, but Bofur survived, and Gimli had probably known all of the other four Dwarves appearing here.
Geoff's wife Kathy took charge of the set design, props,, and costuming. They'll probably have the tomb in their front yard next month. Many of the set pieces belong to Pattycake but Geoff and Kathy built the tomb.
Tolkien wrote many epic poems, and some of them have been converted to songs. I understand it, this is one of those. I don’t think it was in the movies. Another group, Clamavi de Profundis, set the poem to music. I have a playlist called LOTR with a lot of the soundtracks. That immediately got added to the playlist, as Geoff’s version. Misty Mountains has been my favorite for a long time. I find the pacing and the deep bass very soothing . Then he came out with I See Fire with each of the dwarves really getting to show off their own range. This combines the best of both in my opinion. It’s got that slow pacing where you can really appreciate that deep voice, but each of the dwarves get to sing a bit as well. And those harmonies! Delicious! Good catch on the lighting! In the behind-the-scenes we were able to see the preliminary lighting scheme as Geoff was creating it. At one point the screen says something like “lights on full, hopeful “. I had to go back and watch to catch that, mostly because I was so mesmerized by the music. And yes, that was Gimli. When I watched this I got a little bit of a flashback to his Ghost Riders of the Sky since they also faded at the end. But this was so much more powerful. It’s been over a year since I last read the whole series. Time to dig out my hard covers!
In the BTS we say Geoff build that tomb. He really can do it all. Yes that was Gimli, if you look close you can see a fake nose added for the character. Geoff has hinted that there could be a fourth in the series. :) I didn't know the song either but it had been much requested.
I love all of Geoff's stuff so much, I don't think I've ever had a favorite before. I do now. I listened to it on repeat last night for several hours. Amazing. 💙
This is the best video and song he's ever done. He also did "Far Over The Misty Mountain Cold" and "I See Fire" with the 4 outer dwarves. They're in Durin's Tomb. That's why Gimili walks in the beginning and then walks out at the end. Geoff built and painted the tomb and columns. Also... Voiceplay was going to release their new video last Friday. However they had to delay until next Friday the 27th at noon est. Be Prepared featuring Mykal Kilgore. VP does an amazing job with it (as always). Geoff makes an excellent Scar. Mykal is one of the founding members 1997- 2002 with Geoff, Layne and Earl. They were a barbershop quartet singing in front of various businesses. Mykal left to sing and act on Broadway. He's still going strong. Left to right.... Filli, Thorin, Gimili, Killi and Bofur.
I saw him respond to your comment at the premiere and I wondered if you got as excited about it as I would have! This song, the set, the costumes, the BEARDS, it's all magnificent!
Great reaction, as a Tolkien geek I loved all the little things Geoff (and Kathy) put into this. Don’t know if someone mentioned but both “Gimli’s” helmet and beard were made for Geoff.
Hi Velo, This song is not in any of the movies. It is in the Lord of the Rings book (not the Hobbit). Gimli sings it for Frodo as they are traveling through Moria. The tune was composed by the group Clamavi de Profundis. It has also been covered by Colm McGuiness. You should check out all three versions! Edited: Please, please, please, try Colm's version, even if you just listen by yourself! It's a colab with Bobby Bass and Jonathan Young. ruclips.net/video/_uy2_3G25aI/видео.html I don't know if you've ever reacted to Colm, but if not you owe it to yourself to listen to his incredibly unique bass voice.
To add to the two versions you posted, here is a version of John Rys Davis (so?) delivering his version of the poem. And yes, I am a Tolkien nerd too 😇. ruclips.net/video/fkJN1b5ogBM/видео.htmlsi=688N3PnyS_FAShhW
they standing in front of balin's grave(from the fellowship of the ring)... gimli starts the song(poem), thorin's shows up, then fili shows up, then from the beardless and bow i assume legolas shows up(i don't recall a proper bow user in thorin's company), then kili(or another dwarf which i don't recall)...
In the books Gimlie sings it in Moria. It's a short history and I see it as a lament of the past and what was lost. The glory and beauty that is now gone as they wait for Durin to reawaken.
This is full of lore morsels for the fans. All the work and creativity they put in is ridiculous. And the song comes from The Hobbit the Desolation of Smaug, originally sang by Ed Sheeran.
Geoff is awesome. Thanks for reviewing this! For suggestions, I used to sing in a Barbershop chorus and I'd love to see you react to something from that genre. For a quartet I'd suggest the Ringmasters singing their version of a medley of Notre Dame songs: ruclips.net/video/Qo_N9_ZFBhs/видео.htmlsi=c71HLSaiC1SfJtGp

Geoff is a master of everything he does. He thinks of everything & leaves no stone unturned. Thank you for another great reaction to Geoff.
4:23 "My soul is reverberating" -- mine, too. So wonderful to see reactor who loves LOTR appreciate this. Peace

I actually cried the first time I heard that song (the Clamavi de Profundis version) and cried even more yesterday, while watching Geoff's cover.

They say practice makes perfect, but you have to be born with this kind of vocal pipe

Filli, Thorin, Gimili, Killi and Bofur.
I believe the tomb is that Balin, son of Fundin which the Fellowship finds during their travel through Moria, before the fall of Gandalf.

I saw you in the chat during the premiere for this!
I've already listened to it soooo many times. The harmonies are goosebump level.
Great reaction, I have missed your VP and GC reactions
Such a beautiful setting and the music is incredible. LOVE this.

i have figured out after listening to voiceplay and geoff for a time now that i am a sucker for harmonies, always get the chills from them.
In the books Gimlie sings it in Moria. It's a short history and I see it as a lament of the past and what was lost. The glory and beauty that is now gone as they wait for Durin to reawaken.
Appreciate and enjoy your reaction to this new production by my favorite bass!
Enjoyed your reaction immensely! Hoping that Geoff does more songs from Middle Earth! This is from The Fellowship of the Ring (Book 2)

For suggestions, I used to sing in a Barbershop chorus and I'd love to see you react to something from that genre. For a quartet I'd suggest the Ringmasters singing their version of a medley of Notre Dame songs:

The original singers of this are Clamavi di Profundus.
Gorgeous... 🌹🕊
