From 1971 and 1972 Ricky played drums and sang on several Skynyrd songs. He wrote several songs as well. Wino being one of those songs and a White Dove. Rickey is a good guitar player and a good singer. And does it with one lung. I’m happy I got to see them with Johnny, Rickey, and Gary. They put on a great show when I saw them quite a few years ago.
I love FACTS! We all know that Ronnie did not view Rickey as an original member. I am not even sure that Ronnie liked him! If he was such hot shit, he could've rejoined when either Bob or Ed left the band. Right? But I am thinking that Ronnie never even called him or thought about him....
@@DIESEL0759 Who knows the truth? You are right..mostly dead men. Diesel, I respect what you are saying and much of this is opinion. Cagey knew some of these guys quite well but I go back to the basics: What did Ronnie ever say or do regarding Rickey? Now, it is true that in 1977, Ronnie was interested in making amends but that was based on friendship and growing up together. Rickey NEVER made a hit record with LS. NEver wrote a song for LS (White Dove and Seasons were his own song prior to LS). I loved Blackfoot and think Rickey should have stayed there.....
I have mixed opinions about modern lynyrd skynyrd. A lot of people say skynyrd died in '77 with the crash. But my personal rule is that as long as a band has at least 1 founding member it can still have that name. The 2022 ryman auditorium show (last show with gary) honestly felt like a nice way to end the band. The gig itself does have this finale vibe. But current 'skynyrd' is just a bunch of session musicians with ronnies youngest brother and a random bloke who recorded a few demos and briefly played some small gigs shows in 71-72. Are the 2 guys connected to the original band. Yes (kind of). Are they skynyrds? Nope.
When they were a band called One Percent recording DEMOS to get a recording contract Rickey sang it. They were NOT Lynyrd Skynyrd. Rickey was never a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Those early old demos were released as Skynyrd AFTER the plane crash to make money off the dead band and that is how Rickey was turned into Skynyrd. Its not real. Its an invention. And the RRHF and MCA Records have gone on record to state the same. Rickey is NOT Skynyrd. A fraud is being perpetrated on the band and fans.
"Will the original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd please raise your hand?" By virtue of that, only Mr. Rossington should raise his hand. Mssrs. Powell and Wilkeson joined a bit later on. So, neither is an "original" as much as perhaps Mr. Medlocke or anyone else. What about Mr. Junstrom or Mr. Walker? They are "originals" too. Maybe what should have been asked was, "Who among you were there when the plane crashed and were in the band back then?" Ahhh, now Mssrs. Powell and Wilkeson can raise their hands. I will agree that Mr. Medlocke enjoys the spotlight (so much so that he did TV acting for a while) and perhaps yes, his ego is big, and maybe bigger than the late Mr. Van Zant, but that doesn't mean he didn't contribute in the early years. Whether he was a "hired hand" or not, if you like "First and Last" (as I do), you have Mr. Medlocke to thank for it as well as the others, because he was on it and contributed a big part to it. Yes, that's not as well known as their other music that maybe he wasn't a part of, but those of us really into the band don't only just pay attention to the popular songs. We like the ones you DO NOT hear on radio all that often or at all.
@@RonTDB Not correct. Bad info. Mr. Wilkeson joined the band in 1972 and by then they had already been Lynyrd Skynyrd for a few years. Mr. Wilkeson replaced Greg T. Walker as the bassist in the band.
@@Cagey-1 That's Mr. Rossington's opinion and while it's valid, it's not the whole story. Yes, all of those members brought the band to the next level, but they wouldn't have gotten there without the early members getting them off the ground, including Mr. Medlocke. Whether we like him or not is not up for debate. Mr. Rossington at times was quite irritating and a bit selfish in my belief. In actuality they all were in their own way. They became famous and once they did, along with "liquid courage" and "better living through chemistry" they made some bad decisions and some paid for it with their lives.
Exactly. Ricky was the bands 2nd drummer and sang plus wrote 2 songs on that album. Ronnie knew that Ricky had everything to do with T Bone playing bass while they searched for a replacement as Blackfoot had already formed and in fact had a better record deal then Ronnie had been able to get for his own band. For a very short time Jakson Spires was actually a Skynyrd drummer filling in before Blackfoot took off for their 1st European tour. To many think that because Ricky wasn't in the band when the plane crashed he's not a original member. I call the originals those who sweated as Band Brothers back in the earliest days of " Hell House" those who jammed and learned in Hell House are in fact the original members. Hughie played a bunch of gigs throughout the years as a instant fill in because Allen and Gary were always seemingly breaking fingers, hands and wrists in fights, car wrecks and skateboarding mishaps. Ricky was always ready like Hughie to fly in on a moments notice because they knew every note of every song. It seemed like depending on the day of the week on what answer you'd hear about who was and who wasn't original. I will continue to say that those who actually played and sweated inside Hell House and played on that very 1st album are in fact the originals because only original members play on the very 1st album. Anyone who comes along after it's recorded and in the "Can" can never be referred to as original.
To get a bit off topic first of all, I don't feel Lynyrd Skynyrd should have carried on as Lynyrd Skynyrd after Ronnie passed out of respect for both Ronnie and the legacy of the band. Thinking about it now maybe a name change like "Second Helping" would have been more fitting. I don't care if Johnny is Ronnie's brother. I personally don't care for his voice or feel he or anyone else had the right to stand in his place and continue on as Lynyrd Skynyrd. Both Ronnie and Allen were such a huge part of what made that band and I thought it was sad for it to continue as Lynyrd Skynyrd without them. Just my personal feelings. I'm not sure why either but I didn't seem to be okay with the appearance of Ricky in the band and was completely unaware of Allen Collins feelings until reading a post here from Cagey. For the time it happened I thought Hughie Thompson was a great addition. Great guitar player singer and song writer for the legendary Outlaw's and preferred his presence over Ricky's but I'm just a Skynyrd fan sharing my feelings. ✌️
@@Cagey-1 wow, from the Molly Hatchet "grave robbers" story to this, you certainly have educated me my friend. What an awful cut throat business the music business could be. Egos money and greed. I never knew that about Hughie and thought he was a good guy that was sad to learn. Back when Billy Jones was in the Outlaws they were quite a band. It's kinda sad to learn these things. Just my personal opinion but I never liked Johnny VZ and always had a weird gut feeling about Gary, never cared much for Ricky either. I remember seeing something posted once about Ronnie not trusting Gary I wish I could remember more about that now. But I also saw something about Gary saying he'd never play that shit again upon mention of getting the band back together during the Rossington Collins time which really bothered me. I couldn't believe that. Nothing Rossington Collins did came close to Skynyrd and although it was everyone but Artimus I didn't care for any of it.
@@Cagey-1 wow😔 ya know it's kinda funny, in my last post with my new found knowledge about Hughie I almost asked if he had anything to do with Billy's death. That is just so sad. Not LS no matter how you slice it. LS dissolved in Gillesberg, Mississippi in October 1977. Billy Powell publicly announced "There will be no more Skynyrd. Not now, not ever." The reunion in '87-90 was understandable, but just a tribute band. But traveling around using the LS name while everyone who played at Hell House, except the absent Artimus, is in the dirt is disgraceful. @@derhandtrommler how do you know Ronnie wouldn't approve, I heard him say on radio interview when it came time for him to quit he was gonna manage the band write the songs and let his baby brother sing
He never said any such thing. You're making shit up to justify yourself. He intended to front that band until he was in the turf and he did just that. Skynyrd died in Gillesburg,Mississippi in 1977. Rickey has been in their circle since the beginning of the band. He may not have toured with them at the beginning but he’s always been a friend who cowrote some songs then eventually took the spot that Allen left behind. ALL GREAT GUITARISTS IN THIS BAND !!! First saw them in 1974 ❤
Ricky doesn't need Skynard. Blackfoot was the premiere southern HEAVY rock band. I'll take Blackfoot Strikes over anything Skynard ever did. He plays slide guitar and sings like a beast. Train, train, highway song, wishing well, left turn on a red light , fly away, etc etc. Plus Shorty his granpa recorded one of the best harmonica intros in rock history bar none for train train. The man is super talented and underrated in my opinion.
@Cagey-1 they aren't active because Riky decided to play with Skynard, anyone who knows rock knows that. Legacy wise Blackfoots material stands on its own. No Skynard needed! When I saw the original Blackfoot Riky just slayed that guitar and commanded the stage like no other. Never realized what an accomplished slide player he is. But he comes from legendary stock with Shorty Medlock being his grandfather.
That was the best line up of Skynyrd since the crash. Hughie and Ricky did a great job covering the lost members parts and this band was still pretty much Skynyrd. I suppose if Artimus would have been there it would appropriate but their was infighting that I won't get into. I saw this line up very close up. I was a local stage manager for a long time running huge 3 day outdoor country festival at that time. they had been there several times since then but not with this line up. As you well know we lost a few over the years.
Right. As a hired in employee. Not a band member. Jakson Spires said Ronnie Van Zant actually called for him to play drums but Rickey intercepted the call and did not tell Jakson Ronnie called for him. So Rickey, being deceptive and lying is the one who went to Muscle Shoals trying to make his move into someone else's band and music which he did. But he was not a good fit and Ronnie told Rickey this band is not big enough for the both of us and its MY band, meaning Rickey had to go. He was NEVER a band member. MCA Records made this clear in the booklet with box set which shows for all time all 7 Lynyrd Skynyrd bands from start to finish. Rickey Medlocke is NOT in any of them. And because of this not inducted into rock hall of fame.
Maybe he's not an original member but he make's them look good, he's the model for this band & I think the best guitarist they have now his grandfather taught him good, he created some good music with Blackfoot his music should speak for itself, he's a champ on his own he don't need nobody😅
No he was not. He was simply a part time hired in employee when Bob Burns was not around. Rickey was NEVER an original band member and if you listened to Gary in the video he made it very clear. Rickey was a drummer. But he was not and is NOT an "original" drummer for Skynyrd. How hard is it to understand he was a temporary part time employee and NOTHING more?
9/2/24 I admit to not really knowing of Skynyrd when Ronnie was alive. I was huge fan of Rick and don’t know how I missed it. I was so scared by my first husband’s alcoholism -he was really into rock, also that I quit listening to music for a long time after the divorce. I regret it having taken me this long to find LS and I fell in love with the band and everything about them. The acting up in hotels was “normal” then, party central was normal then, and I did partake to the Eagles, Stones, Moody Blues, Frampton, Edgar Winter, Cat Scratch Fever, on and on. But LS is my go to now. I recall hearing about the crash at the time but it didn’t hit me at the time and I’m sadden I missed out on area concert with the boys. Love them. Hope they play Skynyrd in Heaven.
Rickey was, he was on the Muscle Shoals album. Just not on the first official major label LP. Same with Ed King. Any way, Rickey and Ed were far better at the git fiddle anyways. There, now ya'll, and knowing is half the battle.
I don't view Ricky as an original member. Ricky is from Jacksonville Florida. He is a great song writer and musician. I love Blackfoot and Charlie, Greg and Jackson. The are a large part of my youth in Jacksonville. Why do people attack Ricky ? He is not an original member. I'm sure he would like to be considered one. Big deal . Who cares. He's done more to promote Skynyrd and play the music than those who hate. Let it go. LISTEN TO RONNIE'S LYRICS AND THE GREAT GUITAR.
@@davidcoleman4291 i don’t know if there is a name for people that follow a cover band that call themselves the same name as the band they covering. Pay more money for the tickets than the original band ever charged. And believe they are watching the real thing. I guess pathetic.
Saw them in August. Great show. The music was bigger than only one player. The present line up is very polished snd professional. The truth is only Gary , Alan and Ronnie were consistently on each of the early records. The line up changed often. Ricky was there during the First recordings and Ronnie even let him sing. If they had not gotten back together they likely would have not have been as well known or remembered as they are today. Many new generations have embraced them, they have influenced country music as well many rock bands today. So anyone pissing about the band today have no real grounds. To be honest it was Ricky that instilled the quality of the music in these latter years. He has been a pro since 6 years old preforming. He was there and his father influenced Ronnie much.
Who are you to determine if Gary "LIED"? Gary is an original member, so what he says should go. Some guy on the internet shouldn't be the one to say, "Well, I know an original member said so, but I say he's a liar, because I sat on my couch and said so!!"
I think Gary was just doing what was best for his family and his legacy. Keeping the Tribute Band legit was and is important. We all need to keep the LS legendary music alive. Absolutely critical. Diesel, you KNOW Ronnie did not consider RIckey or Larry or Greg T Walker as original members. Ronnie could have had Rickey join the band as either a drummer (when Bob left) or a guitarist (when Ed left) but he did not. I will say it one more time: Ronnie wrote Don't ASk me No Questions directed at Rickey. No doubt.....Jakson said in interviews that he wrote STars as a response...
No, I do not "know" the thoughts of dead people. That's what you do. You know exactly what someone thinks when they're dead. I don't claim to know what dead people think. Can you check in on Aunt Penny? She's been dead a while now and I'd love to know her thoughts. You're all experts on what dead people think, so Aunt Penny shouldn't be a problem for you.
The debut album is Pronounced. No Rickey in sight on that one. First and Last was a collection of demo recordings that were intended to be presented to the major record labels to secure a contract, but were unanimously rejected due to a technical problem that effected the sound quality. In 1978, MCA marketed them as "Skynyrd's First" merely as a last ditch attempt to make money while the band's popularity was still high after the crash. If Rickey is an original because of his being hired to play drums, then Greg T. Walker is also an original for being hired to play bass.
Not really. Joey Molland played on the first full Badfinger album but the first some that was released under that name he was not on. He replaced Ron Giffith

@@johndoe-ln4oi Not so fast, Sparky. Bill Haley and the Comets were from Pennsylvania and Buddy Holly was from west Texas.. Chuck Berry is from East St. Louis, Little Richard was from Georgia, but he's the only one of the originators who came from the Deep South. Rock is actually black music,It's rhythm & Blues, black gospel and St Louis jazz. All those came from the heart and soul of the black man and woman. Even country was based on the combination of Jimmy Rodgers ( not Jimmie Rodgers ) acoustic soul blues and Bob Wills swing jazz. You don't seem to know your music history. son. Yes, Whites contributed to early rock and roll,.but white radio wanted nothing to do with "race records" that black artists made. City councils in the south banned rock n' roll. It's 90% black music originating across America and don't you forget it.
The term, " Southern Rock," actually came about due to an Album produced at Southern Sholes Recording Studio called Sounds of the South. Some of the bands on that album were Skynyrd, Allmans ,Little Feat, Marshall Tucker and a couple other bands all from Southern States. The Radio stations around the Country instead of introducing a song from that album as a " song from Sounds of the South," shortened it to this is a "Southern Rock song by inset band name. So thank the Countries Radio Stations for calling those bands Southern Rock and thankfully the term stuck. No different then Grunge, Hippie music, Rock, Country and yes even Opra. Southern Rock is easier to track then remembering which Confederate State a band comes from.

I'm impressed so many people know the thoughts of dead men.
You must have been real close to them to know what they are thinking. Tell me, how long have you known them?
You could have stopped at "opinion"
Like knowing what dead guys think. That's a pretty cool trick, talking to dead guys. How do you do it? Can you talk to my Aunt Penny?
Nope.
Who sang the song white dove and when ?
When they were a band called One Percent recording DEMOS to get a recording contract Rickey sang it. They were NOT Lynyrd Skynyrd. Rickey was never a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Those early old demos were released as Skynyrd AFTER the plane crash to make money off the dead band and that is how Rickey was turned into Skynyrd. Its not real. Its an invention. And the RRHF and MCA Records have gone on record to state the same. Rickey is NOT Skynyrd. A fraud is being perpetrated on the band and fans.
"Will the original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd please raise your hand?"
By virtue of that, only Mr.
Maybe you need to dig a little deeper. Leon was an original and quit the band to go back to his full time job until Ronnie convinced him to return.
Pronounced is their first album release.
NOT a fan of Ricky "The Wannabe" Medlocke
When I learned Billy took his life I was very sad. Someone has to be in some pretty bad pain to do something about it.
I'd like to think Hughie felt some guilt or remorse for his fallen brother but from what you've told me I certain that never happened. Good on you for bringing him that picture to sign. What a POS for doing that. You certainly have entwined with many great musicians and families of.
Not sure if you knew the Skynyrd boys from the beginning or not but did you get to know Ed King at all?
Ed's time in the band was my favorite and I kinda lost interest after that time. As talented as Steve was I didn't care much for the direction they were going in. But Ed seemed like good people and my favorite Skynyrd guitarist if I had to pick one.
@@Cagey-1 wow so, the POS award goes to Hughie. He was def not a good man. Hell of a guitar player but not so much of a good person. I wish you were someone I knew in my personal life, love all the endless stories you share. Thanks so much always for your wonderful insightful replies 👍

You know Ronnie would not approve and I'm guessing Allen, Leon, Billy and Steve would not, either. We KNOW Artimus wants nothing to do with them. Pull the plug on this nonsense.
They are a great Band, but not LS, Marshall Tucker is not MTB, but I love Doug for keeping it alive, so I can't blame Gary. God Bless yall
Anything else, like the 1987 reunion, is just a tribute that got weaker each time a player was lost. When Rossington bought it, that was it for the tribute.

Ronnie was a great song writer, and I don't think it's like that at all, I think Ricky loves Skynyrd's songs.
That was the best line up of Skynyrd since the crash. Hughie and Ricky did a great job covering the lost members parts and this band was still pretty much Skynyrd. I suppose if Artimus would have been there it would appropriate but their was infighting that I won't get into. I saw this line up very close up. Rickie played drums on the muscle shoals demo

Love them. "Southern Rock" - lol. What a ridiculous term. Is that like "Italian Opera"?
@@Cagey-1 I think you may have missed my point. Rock originated in the South. It was the melding of the Blues and Country. Rock and Roll is Southern to its core.
