I had the honor of recording Linda and her superb band live at Atlanta’s Fox Theater in 1977. She was already a huge success, a beautiful and humble young woman with a golden voice and has grown to be a legitimate legend of music. I wish her all the best, always. ❤️
Those Fox shows in Atlanta in 77 were some landmark Ronstadt performances. They float around RUclips - would love to hear a quality recording - what a great gig that must have been.
Not only is she one of the great talents of all time, she is a sweetheart. I saw her in Tempe Arizona in the 1970s. She had a warmup up act that was so sensational, the audience wouldn't let him off the stage. Linda came out and asked the audience, "Isn't he incredible? Don't you want to hear more of him? I promise you I'll give you my entire show, no matter how late it gets." And she did. The show lasted five hours. The warmup act? Billy Joel, unknown at the time. The greatest show I've ever seen in my 75 years. I love Linda Ronstadt.
I never knew she’s from here. Her album canciones de mi padre…is my favorite. She’s my idol. I seriously thought she was in her 40s. I’ve only seen herself in that album. You are so lucky. She is my idol I wanna cry..too late ❤❤
Ms. Ronstadt is such a beautiful lady, honest, strong, great sense of humor. I’ve never heard of a scandal, she’s never been a whiner, she could have a huge ego, but she doesn’t. You can’t help but love her.
Here's a scandal for you. Jerry Brown was governor of California and Linda Ronstadt was his girlfriend. He went on a trip to Africa and brought her along. Since this was some sort of government trip and he was representing the state of California they were both criticized for going on this trip with them being unmarried. I was a kid then and I thought it was kind of cool. This had to be the late 70s.
Truly a gift. Being a teenager in the 70s her music then and over the years has been a huge part of my life. Love her so much and so sad that beautiful voice was silenced from giving us more music.
I agree, also a teen in the 70s. For me it is especially disheartening to see what life can do to people whose talents were so exceptional. Dudley Moore, comedic actor and skilled pianist also comes to my mind. Yes, Linda's was a powerful, beautiful voice and she is a gifted artist to be sure.😊
I agree, but it is good that she left us so much. I have so much Linda Ronstadt vinyl, and unlike some performers, I can listen to it over and over non-stop. Plus watching her videos on RUclips, wow. I wish I had seen her perform in person, but I'm grateful for the recordings. She is so accepting of her life now. Parkinson's can be devastating. I hope she lives her life out in peace and enjoyment.
She has such a wonderful sense of humor and down-to-earth personality. Its so sad to lose the very thing that she loves the most.Singing for her wasn't just about money it was her life and soul. The disease she has is devastating. I wish her the best.
She is just stunning in every way. A true, true legend. She may not have her singing voice anymore but we still have her and her recorded work and for that we are fortunate.
"it's nice to be acknowledged, it's nice for your work to be acknowledged. But it's not what you do it for, you do it for the work. If you do it for pride, you're in big trouble" - Linda Ronstadt. So wise. Love her humor too.
Same here...How I loved 'Oooh Baby Baby', I would play that 45' over and over again. Not to mention 'Heat Wave' and 'Blue Bayou'!!! Yes, she's a legend.
When i was a little girl, before my dad got sick with schizophrenia, i had a future in singing! I loved singing blue bayou and dont it make my brown eyes blue...so, now i sing her songs to my children. They may never understand, but i always will! My childhood favorite, next to neil diamond! Bit blue bayou got me through alot of days when I would watch my dad just slip in and out of reality. This song became my escape! #no1bluebayoufan
Growing up, I was mesmerized by her amazing voice, grace and beauty. I’m so grateful that I got the opportunity to experience her in real time. We love you Linda!
Tracy Smith pulled that interview off like a champ - she makes every question sound rational, reasonable and in context. Watching this felt like witnessing a conversation between two relatives.
...you Got That right !! she has remained as sweet as she was in '67 (?), when she (along with "The Stone Ponies"), brought us "You & i travel to the beat of a Different Drum..."...
@@ceejay1794 disrespectful to a legend. Refer to the comment about weight issue. Linda Ronstadt is a beautiful woman who has a lovely voice. Silenced by disease. I had many of her albums in 1977.
She will always be THE GOLD STANDARD of women singers. A timeless classical, sassy, opera, Latin, ballad, rock, country super star! Thanks for the music.
Nobody does a more thorough retrospective of a celebrity’s life than CBS Sunday Morning and there’s no one on earth I’d rather see one of than Linda Ronstadt!
Oh how I love this woman. When I was a kid, she was 15 years older than me and I had her posters all over my wall. There will be no other Linda Ronstadt. She had a powerful, booming voice and an incredible stage presence. She wasn't just pretty; she was cute to boot. Not many women back then made it this big in music. She made it BIG!
The album Living In the USA image was just as impressionable as Farrah when growing up. That beauty has not changed. Still just as classy a lady as can be.
I grew up in the 70s too. It's weird how amidst the Farrah Fawcetts and Cheryl Ladds, no one talked about Linda as a sex symbol. But oh my God she was beautiful and sexy as all get out. Even before she opened her mouth and made that otherworldly gorgeous music.
She's a complete doll. She's my idol, I'm Mexican American from California. I'm 22 and since I was 6yo I've always wanted to look/talk/SING just like her!!! :( I love her dedicatedly. More than ANYBODY ELSE 😋
I am so glad she did this interview. She looks better than I imagined. Thank god she heard that different drum and embarked on her career.....we all benefited.
We ALL owe her a debt of gratitude. She was the female performer who kicked open the doors to the music world! And, she left it open and others. Sure there were others, great and not-so before her, but the dynamics of her voice, personality, performance style, and presence blew us all away the first time we heard her. Grateful to be able to see her once. Sending my Love and Prayers that her life is as satisfying now as it was back in the day.
Llorando - I met Linda in person, years ago, at East Bay Performing Arts Center in Richmond CA, in women’s bathroom! She was wonderful, gracious and beautiful. I told her I played violin in Mariachi group and she was so excited and supportive! She is and always will be one of my greatest inspirations. And now she lives in my hometown, in Beautiful Sea Cliff, by the Golden Gate Bridge. My mother also had Parkinson’s and died of one of its complications - aspiration pneumonia. Linda, we all know you’ll be singing up a storm in heaven, when you get there!
I've seen hundreds of concerts and collected thousands of albums of music during my life. Among my most cherished memories, a date on Linda's 1980 tour. I can say with pride that I saw this legend perform live on stage. There has never been, nor will ever there be, a voice like hers.
I've seen Linda in concert 7 times. I didn't enjoy the last time because she talked politics and sang very little. I didn't pay money for that. However, every other time, she was amazing. She did very little talking and just sang. I especially loved the concert she did with Aaron Neville. They were great together!
I saw her perform live just once... it was a great show. She was wearing the iconic red and white polka dot dress. Don't remember the year, but I loved the concert.
Yeah, remember when she said she didn't want to know if Christians or conservatives were in the audience because it would mar her enjoyment? That's really nice. Great talent, though.
Inherent niceness? Really? __________________ "It’s a real conflict for me when I go to a concert and find out somebody in the audience is a Republican or fundamental Christian. It can cloud my enjoyment. I’d rather not know.” ___________________ I've been rather disgusted by her since she made that statement in 2004. And I wasn't even a Republican or Christian at the time!
Such a kind and intelligent soul to see that she’s taking life in stride and that she still has some enjoyment in life. There’s a lot to be said for laying on the couch and reading some good books.
@@lindaronstadt3938 you made my day Linda. Tears…thanks so much. Almost 2 years ago 8-19-19, I was in an accident and was ejected from my Jeep, broke my kneck and am paralyzed. I’m happy for still being here.
Never be another Linda Ronstadt. I remember all the guys drooling over her incredible beauty (the posters in every guys bedroom). As well as the fact that everyone in my age bracket love love loved her powerful voice. I'm a 70's era woman and so lucky to have that genre be my time in life. Linda - we love you!!

Me too! I remember seeing her open for The Beach Boys....at Madison Square Garden. It was HER I wanted to see....Them? Not so much. She was amazing then, and still is now.
I was one of those guys with her Blue Bayou poster on his wall. I still get tears when I hear her sing. Tears of absolute joy hearing her beautiful voice. I marveled at her amazing beauty and sexiness. I always thought she could make wearing a burlap sack look sexy. It's too bad that the music of today has no one that sing like she did. Pure musical talent.
She was such a great talent. She did everything -- country rock, rock, pop, opera, jazz standards, mariachi -- and she knocked it out of the park each time.
This interview breaks my heart 😢 I can't imagine my talent taken away from me. We love you Linda you are simply the best. I don't know much but I know I love you ❤️
Linda Ronstadt is one of the greatest - if not THE greatest - American icons of the last century. I will remain a hardcore fan of Ms. Linda until I die.
Linda, Bonnie, Joni, were the dominant singers of my formative years in music. In my head, I know every note, and in my heart these women’s voices will sing on. Thank you for sharing this. Since hearing of Linda’s diagnosis, I think of her a lot. She is a gracious woman to give updates like this to those of us who love her.
I went to one of Linda's concerts in my late teens and it was by far one of the best I'd ever been to. She did not disappoint. No grand light show, no dancers gyrating around, no fancy costumes, just Linda standing in front of the mic singing her best songs and the audience singing along to every word. She is one of the greats and has a voice like no other. Thanks for the great memories Linda. 💕
@Light in the Piazza You mean American. All Mexicans aren't Americans. They are from América. She has Hispanic and original American blood. Along with European.
Pure and unadulterated talent. She didn't behave - or look - like a stripper; she didn't have to perform musical acrobatics with her voice, she just sang and boy, could she sing. She possessed a God-given talent and I'm so glad that hers was one of the soundtracks of my teens. Thanks for sharing your gift with us all - you're one of the GREATS!
A fascinating creature still. One of the few superstars, living or dead, that didn't bathe in their own reflection. Being Cool is easy, being respected and beloved in an often dirty rotten business - that is something. The only female pipes we can listen to over and over. Clear, unadorned, strong, flexible and very warm.
She did an interview shortly after announcing her disease and said that her recordings and performances accounted for a tiny percent of her singing. She would sing out loud to herself all day long.
I was a professional sound engineer all I did was travel with bands more than anything in the world I wanted the opportunity to work with Linda Ronstadt in my career and I never did get to do that that was the one thing that I wanted to do because her voice is so fantastic or so bad it was just unbelievable I have not got words to tell you about her voice.
My mom went to high school with Linda in the early to mid 60's down there in Tucson, Arizona. Mom has showed me Linda's class picture & as well as choir class pictures in her high school yearbook! Throughout my childhood i can still remember mom speaking of Linda & how pretty she was & a beautiful singer in high school. Mom is one year older than Linda, i believe
I can't even express what Linda's voice has meant to me over the years! I have played her albums over and over till each song is embedded in my soul. Her voice was a special mix of softness and power that resonated deeply with me on each track! So sorry that Parkinson's has taken her voice and her body(my brother's too.) As the days go by, I hope she finds at least some comfort by the many years of happiness she gave to millions of fans all over the world from her special and unique voice.
Becky Drogowski Such a lovely comment. Amazing the impact an individual artist can have on a person. Hope you and your brother still listen to her together.
I felt free in the 70s, I didnt feel like our country was headed down a communist road. I love Linda just wish knowing what she should know now about Jerry Brown she wouldnt be friends with him anymore.
“I was just screaming, I wasn’t singing. I didn’t want to charge people for that.” What an incredibly humble artist. She deeply cares about her craft and refuses to let down her fans.
She is so beautiful a human being. Not one ounce of bitterness heard from Linda concerning her current health. Amazing. Thank you Linda and thank YAH for your voice and heart
I meant to say "so UNDERrated" in the annals of music" She was sooo pretty and then add her beautiful singing voice to it.....I have a theory that if female rappers today had Linda's voice they'd be singing instead of talking over music.
Something about Linda from 4:00 to 4:10 in this clip hurts my heart. The decency of not wanting "charge people for that", followed by the sincerity and sadness in her "yeah" as she closes her eyes, it is just so sad to hear. A legend forever.
Her remark about not charging people truly shows what kind of person she is and her kind heart. There have been many performers who could no longer sing yet still continued on with concerts or tv shows. My respect for her is even greater now.
After watching the "Sound Of My Voice" documentary I started buying the cd's and dvd's, and a new collection was slowly building over time as I wanted more and more. Her music was a happy diversion to pandemic life, I had already grown up with it (I'm 55) but just didn't have time for it yet. This is one of the best pieces on her life and story!! Love the interviews! Thanks so much for posting this for me to watch now as a new, obsessed fan.... She is amazing! -Bill B
She makes today's "singers" look like the minimal talents that they are. She stood there and sang. No big show, no revealing costumes and suggestive moves...she just sang.
She performed at a concert in Tuscaloosa Al in 1978 with herself, a piano and a guitar player and that was all she needed. The best vocal performance I ever heard
Ohh is it ever!... "What's New" is the one that does it for me-- the whole album--sends shivers up my spine...between her and Karen Carpenter.. I cant make up my mind! I'm just glad I can have both ,ALL of their work, in my collection...
And ya know...it doesnt seem to sound like Linda is jumping into her falsetto range in that Blue Bayou note.... I think that that's her natural range.... In-freeking-credible voice!!
That was one of the first songs I learned from the radio when I was growing up. Being an amateur/wannabe singer, myself, I worked for years to be able to hit that note! I was so excited when I finally was able to do it.
I grew up loving Linda Ronstadt. I remember saving my money to buy her newest album and then wearing them out playing them over and over. I wouldn’t pay money to hear many artists sing nowadays but I’d pay to listen to her talk. She is truly one of a kind! ❤️
@@lindaronstadt3938 Ms. Ronstadt, I’m humbled that you replied directly to me…Wow! I fell in love with you when you were the lead singer in the Stone Poneys and haven’t stopped! Thank you!❤️❤️
Great interview and excellent incite on her life. I recall back then discovering her and soon acquired all her albums. People came over to my townhouse and I usually had her records on during the visits and dinners. She made life fun and calm and a host of other great times. Too bad many of the new generation was not exposed to her talents. Maybe we'd have a bit more peace. Many thanks to her.
She's such a direct, honest, no BS person. Her voice was her instrument and she knew when it was failing - so for people to tell her she was imagining it or being a perfectionist is almost insulting. She knew. Such a talent
"I was just yelling, instead of singing I was just kind of yelling, I didn't want to charge people for that". I really admire the fact that she had so much consideration for her fans that she didn't want them to pay for a bad performance. She only wanted to give them her best.
watched this last night and thinking about that this morning. What a pro - a high compliment from me - how many times have you seen others in any field stay on five years too long, or even worse get propped up on the stage for a few extra bucks? And on top of that just being clear-eyed and honest about her career/life, I like her response to the interviewer who suggested they might find a cure for Parkinson's and she brushed off the optimism with "Hey, I'm 72" which I took as a "I'm in the territory, stuff happens." She was never really a problem child either, no deep bout with drugs, affairs, tortured soul stuff. ('course, some people think that's what music should be about but I'll leave that for someone else) no histrionics, still friends with Jerry, went on to dabble in the standards...just a pro with a fantastic voice who excelled at her craft. On the side, I don't understand why people bring in a comparison to Trump, simply, it's changing the subject from the original comment while souring the whole thread. Oh well.
I really believe that any self-respecting singer/song writer/performer would certainly feel the same way she does. I've been singing and have performed at times since high school, and I'd feel the same way.
I loved her so much when I was young. Few years ago I learned that she is a stubborn atheist... I pray for her soul... if only she had come to Jesus... but sadly, to this day, she does not believe...
@@GTLyons: I'm a Christian too, but it really annoys me when I hear misguided snooty "Christians" like you say things like that. What an ignorant, faithless way to speak. I wish both militant Christians AND militant atheists would learn when to shut their pie holes and not attack others. Whatever happened to "live and let live?" Besides- does your God have the power or do you? The worst kind of faith is one that frames faith as some inherited thing. Leave it to each seeker to find their own path because I believe God loves true seekers of all kinds. @@GTLyons - She used to tout her Catholicism. In fact, her first few albums have a spiritual/religious song on them. She had also commented about Aaron Neville and her both being Catholic back when they were dueting. I wonder what happened to cause her to lose her faith... (Parkinson's perhaps?)?
Life is sad. Her voice makes it less so. She's still a beautiful soul with big brown eyes...Bless you lady. A forcefull voice in RockNRoll. Thank you for the Eagles too! I'm going to look for this live LP from the 1980 concert....
I doubt it she could use grunts and raspiness kind of growls sort of like metal singers do but she chose when to use it .I've never heard a bird do that lol she was way more talented than we think or give her credit for .Lets just say she sang like a hybrid bird and panther mix who was bilingual lol .I'm a metal guy I liked it when she used her raspy voice and don't see anyone give her any acknowledgement for being able to do so in some of her songs .
I’ve been married to my Mexican wife for 9 years now...I’m non Mexican. About a year ago I just happened to one day come across “Don’t know much” and I mentioned her name. Motorcityman Man I’m sure you had her DNA backtracked thru ancestors.com. Her dad was proud to be a Mexican all the way son. Your all the way up there, don’t get into what doesn’t concern you.
I can’t believe she was able to pull off the hardest ranchero songs which can be as hard to sing as any opera. Thank you for your music and making room for Mexican music too. God bless you
...Amen; & then right in the middle of her hugeness, she left it all behind to go to Broadway & not only perform the lead in the difficult "Pirates of Pensance", but, oh yeah, won 2 or 3 'Obies' (the Theater's award like the Oscars or Grammys) that year... One of The Very Best !!!....

I never knew she’s from here. Her album canciones de mi padre…is my favorite. She’s my idol. I seriously thought she was in her 40s. I’ve only seen herself in that album. You are so lucky. She is my idol I wanna cry..too late ❤❤
Love your story...cool❤
Gorgeous
At 72 her face still looks beautiful ! She had one of the most beautiful voices in rock and country.
Totally agree with you. Listen to her fantastic voice when I was in high school in late 70s
They don’t make them like they used to.
Her, Zevon, Jackson Browne, the best is behind us.
@@scallaghan2118 exactly -- she entertained millions of people over the decades. She left us with a very rich legacy of song and music.
I will always love listening to her sing. What an amazing gift she shared with the world. It is pure joy.
She always did have an amazing voice. And she will always have one of the best female voices I've ever heard.
From rock&roll to "The Pirates of Penzance" she could truly sing anything and everything!
I find her songs drab, lame and skittish.

Oh my gosh, how I loved that era of music. Ms. Ronstadt was one of my favorites. 😊🎶💖
Omg her little pause at the end to watch the crowd just for a few moments longer has me crying 😭❤️
She sure did
I grew up in the 70s too. It's weird how amidst the Farrah Fawcetts and Cheryl Ladds, no one talked about Linda as a sex symbol. But oh my God she was beautiful and sexy as all get out. Even before she opened her mouth and made that otherworldly gorgeous music.
Linda crooned and emoted melting my heart. Now a lonely senior citizen, I wish she was my neighbour just to chat to. 😅

U gay or what
I am so glad she did this interview.
When she hits the high note in Blue Bayou, it is always so arresting, and I’d like to study exactly why. What a glorious singer.
@Spermwhale1000 I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard it.
Funny she said she really didn’t like the way she sounded when she sang Blue Bayou!
I'm incredibly jealous.
I saw her perform live just once... it was a great show. She was wearing the iconic red and white polka dot dress. Don't remember the year, but I loved the concert.
Lucky!
There is an inherent niceness to Linda Ronstadt. An inner glow of decency and goodness. You want the best for her.
So eloquently spoken and absolutely true. I never knew she had such a charming, self deprecating sense of humor. Lovely! A National Treasure.
Yeah, remember when she said she didn't want to know if Christians or conservatives were in the audience because it would mar her enjoyment? That's really nice. Great talent, though.
QueenVelveeta So talented AND insightful?
no...no there is not.
Inherent niceness?

It made me tear up when she said she sings in her head.
She did an interview shortly after announcing her disease and said that her recordings and performances accounted for a tiny percent of her singing. She would sing out loud to herself all day long.

watched this last night and thinking about that this morning. Oh well.

@@motorcitymanman7711 hahaha a quarter...theres no like a quarter...she is mexican american....thats all.
Which ranchero song was it?
@@ziggysmom5646 Ernesto may have been referring to her album CANCIONES DE MI PADRE, a collection of ranchera standards.
@@ziggysmom5646 There is a theatrical performance here on youtube. It was shown on PBS. Look for it. It is called canciones de mi padre. It is a little over an hour long.
Cheers
This brought me to tears. Such and amazing voice and amazing lady. Thank you for all the beautiful music you made for us to enjoy for years and years to come. You will never be forgotten.
