  • Instead of doing the usual budget PC build of the month, I decided to try something different and use the 980 Ti that we got in a recent part hunt and give it some Tech YES Lovin' then pit it against the 1070 Ti on this amazing x58, as well as test the i7-980x vs the X5675 Xeon, and the results as always 'interesting'

:D im buying it now because its cheaper then gtx 1070 ti and its better for the age nvidia sucks at those 10 series es and ps if you have them 2 you have gtx 1080 half ti :d ps if the graphic cards were like gtx 980 ti it is a hard rekter

The only upgrade for a 980 Ti owner is the 1080 Ti. That was the move I made and don’t regret it. The 980 Ti is still a smoking card today though!

Pama Levi they were selling around 200 after the release of the 1080 Ti. For $300 you'd be able to get much better performance from a newer card than the 980 Ti when the next Nvidia GPUs release

Just picked up a 980Ti Lightning edition (MSI) for around $250~ USD and it'll be paired with an x5660. Stoked to see how this will perform. Wish I still had my x34 to pair it with, but had to sell it awhile ago so now I'm back to 1080p. But I picked up the x5660 and an EVGA SLI3 board for $29 and they work great.

There's an EVGA 980ti for $300 on Cragslist in Richmond, VA at the moment. I'm happy with my 1080p gaming on the GTX 1060 6GB I got at MSRP last year. I'd actually have to upgrade my 520W PSU if I wanted to go with either the 980ti or the 1070ti and would get even more out of that tech with an upgraded monitor. Thanks for the comparison and the great information!

Either 980 TI or 1070 TI would be fine to have though I wouldn't bother getting one if all I had was a regular 60Hz 1080p screen. I'd want either a 144Hz or a 2560x1080p ultrawide, for anything less a 1060 makes more sense.
Where I'm from a 100W of difference makes roughly a 100EUR difference in power costs over a year if the PC stays on 24/7, if it only gets used for about 4-8 hours a day then the power cost difference isn't big enough to care about power efficiency if the used card is considerably cheaper to buy than the new one.

    • @greggreg2458
      @greggreg2458 6 лет назад

Bitter Cynic Exacly, i bought a 980ti watercooled (Gigabyte 980ti waterforce) 7 months ago for 290€, i can push it to 1508mhz without adding voltage. A 1070ti is like 550€ here, i use my PC 1/2 hours a day, so i don't really care about power.

Have you tried the CoolerMaster "Master Gel" series of thermal paste? I used the master gel "Professional" and while it really takes a while to get a nice even spread going (it likes to clumps up and then stick more to the spatula provided than the chip itself), but it gives pretty good performance for the price and for being non-conductive. I get about 55-60 degrees C on my Xeon x5675 when overclocked to 4.2ghz on all 6 cores with hyperthreading, and with probably too high of a voltage at around 1.385v. Could easily be running at 40c at stock with this paste I recon.

Now, I still have an EVGA x58 Classified Mobo + i7 920 that's pulling media center/backup gaming duty, refresh my memory though, because I did some cursory googling, and I can't remember. My Mobo has only USB2/Sata3/PCIE2.0, I remember there was a version with USB3/Sata6 that came out near EoL for the x58 chipset but I don't remember if the PCIE spec changed or not.
And if it didn't, is there a chance the Graphics cards were bottlenecked by the older PCIE spec? Or is the bandwidth still more than necessary? I had a 970 in my Classified and I seemed to have picked up performance when moving into a PCIE3.0 spec system, but of course the rest of the system config changed, pretty much only the GPU stayed the same, so that probably has more to do with it than the bandwidth. I was just curious.
    Nice video BTW

This is a erroneous test to do. An x58 does not have PCIE 3.0
PCIE 2.0 is going to mean that the full bandwidths of the card can be tested. The results could very possibly be skewed due to this.

Bryan I believe you've heard about it. But to fix and get past Marvel sata3/sata 2 bs controllers. You use samsung m.2 960/970 Evo and put it on PC express adapter. So you can go from limited 200-250 speeds to like 3200/1500 up/down something. I am in the process of testing mine soon. I got a cool funky x58 asrock for $78 us dollars. I got steal on the m.2 open box 250gb and tested it on another rig, seems it's never been touched and 2 months from original manufacturer date. Can't wait to run it. The nvme supposed to have built in legacy support or other ways. So you take old x58 and literally give it all the cool benefits of modern hardware, or at least one of the most important in my opinion. I don't care about usb3.0/3.1 that much... Can't wait!

Oh, also, Windows 10 Pro build 1803 won't install. Build 1709 is perfectly fine ... have you any experience with the 1803 build on X58?

I have an x5675 and I’m having the same problem with my 240mm aio but I lost two of the mounting screws and have the remaining to across form each other but I would suggest not tightening them to tight I suggest maybe 3-5 turns on each screw by hand or tool

Getting 4.2ghz on my x5675 no problem (55-60 degrees C temperatures max) all 6 cores/12 threads (995 Cinebench score, these x58 era chips are still beasts...), I came from a 920 too which was overheating due to loads of dust in my heatsink (at only 3.6ghz) and poor case airflow which I've solved. I'd say your cooler is probably just not doing a good enough job, or your paste is not applied over the entire chip properly. If you've done the "pea method", I'd recommend re-applying it by scraping into an even layer over the entire chip.

Hello, please I would actually upgrade my system. I have already a gtx 1070 from msi and I can get the x5675 from AliExpress (I also have a zalman power supply). But I can’t find any lga 1366 or x58 motherboard for less than $130 unless if they’re broken. In my country I can find the t3500 for about $200 and I would really love to get a new case and all of that later which I cannot do with the t3500. Can you please give me a recommendation motherboard and a price point ? Thanks

This computer is a beast, runs cool with corsair h1100i v2 liquid cooler and I won't be upgrading to a new ddr4 mother board for some time. Yes, x58 is usable and worth it in 2020!

980 Ti is probably the best GPU that Nvidia has released in the last 5 years. I mean when you have a good cooler and can OC it, it is equal to - and sometimes even above, stock FE GTX 1080s , possibly even some aftermarket ones. I got lucky with winning the Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 980 Ti - which is easily one of the best models for air overclocking. *And I say it is the best based on said Overclocking, as it holds up better than ANY GPU from its Era - and actually competes above the GTX 1070 in the Pascal product stack - basically reaching parity with a slightly tweaked, fully OCed GTX 1070 Ti - or even a GTX 1080 left stock!*
Just comparing things like Firestrike, Unigine Valley, and Steam VR Benchmark - as I have said I have gotten better results than SOME GTX 1080s! Of course I am running 1503 MHZ core and 8 GHZ effective VRAM speeds, which is a solid 45%+ OC over "reference" (1000 MHZ base, 1076 Boost) - so just remember that when you see a 980 Ti compared against a GTX 1070 on GPU-Z Database - that is because Pascal overclocks its self largely, and Maxwell has HUUUGE amounts left in the tank that GPU Boost 2.0 does not touch without massive tweaking.
In my case, that included +0.375 mV offset, custom fan curve, and +136 core, +990 memory (in Gigabyte's "OC Guru II" software, as I could not nail down as stable an OC with MSI Afterburner - though I still run it as a system monitoring tool in Windows 10 - since there is no performance "Gadgets" like you could install on Windows 7 to monitor temps and speeds.)
Also OC Guru II only supports fan stepping - I think that may have been part of the issue I had with Afterburner, but I think it was more Voltage related, as I needed to hit a stable 1.218 Vcore under load to maintain 1503 MHZ core and 8 GHZ VRAM.

Thanks for vid, Bryan. As an owner of Galax HOF 980ti. I'd say: if you have 980ti, don't buy 1070ti or anything else this gen. if you sitting on pre-Maxwell card and want upgrade, wait for 11x series which should be with us soon and you'll get latest and greatest. 980ti is a killer and was my best upgrade when it came out. I don't have Xeon, just 5960x on Asrock Taichi and I don't see any reason to upgrade even into overpriced 1080ti. Probably I'll get 1180ti and rock on it for another two generations.

Still have a 980ti and find it is still ok. Would like to upgrade but not quite yet. Gonna pull a bit more out of it I think. However I have known this card to always be hot and seeing your temps has me shocked. I donno how you did that! Mine goes to 75 ish when gaming. Most games it is around 65 but with Ark:Survival Evolved it gets really hot. I used to worry but I don't anymore as I hear everyones 980 ti's can go that high but how low you have yours is crazy!! I wonder if I am doing something wrong with my fan setup or maybe I need some new fans. These are quite old now. Might even be worth changing the paste
