    Nice video man, never bothered with these after the x79 huanans, they barely handled the 3930k 6 core with no overclocking... biggest thing about x58 is the overclocking, if you can't OC x58 then no point IMO.

      Thanks YES man! Yep, I was hoping with the board to get some overclocking out of it. But at stock speeds, they just don't hold up to even budget CPUs anymore.
      Love your channel man. Thanks for giving mine a view :-)

      The other point tech yes man made was possible timings with 3x channel ddr3 might give you a slight edge with competitive gaming, still considering the option, just need the right price (scratches chin in contemplation)

    And I forgot to mention later in the video... Yes, this does run in Dual Channel, and the PCIe interface speed was being misreported by CPU-Z. It claimed 4x, but scored identically to the 2400G in GPU only testing, meaning it is at least connecting at 8x.

    no triple channel, no dice. I have an X5670 at 4.2ghz in a asus p6t deluxe with 12gb of triple channel memory, it smokes my old fx8320 so i'm happy enough with it!. I get 980ish in cinebench r15 multi-thread which keeps me happy. Was thinking of even getting an x5675 to see if i can get around a 4.4ghz OC.

      You could just get a Ryzen 1700 since people will be selling those for the newer chips. They easily make 1700+ cb even with a low clock of 3.8 Ghz.

      I got a X5675 @4,4Ghz paired with a 1070, in CB R15 I get 1031CB.
      When I go balls to the walls I can get 1123CB @4,8Ghz, I think I can get 4,9Ghz and about 1150CB or maybe even 1200CB (went from 4,75Ghz getting 1089 to 4,8Ghz 1123, may have a little chance at getting it at 5Ghz to run Cinebench)

    if you get a mobo with overclocking, X58 is definitely still worth it.
    However without overclocking it just really isn't worth it, due to the low stock clock speeds.
    My 5670 at 4.6ghz is pretty damn good, at only 20% slower than a 1600 at 4ghz, putting it at about 1050 on cinebench for my daily OC. If I didn't care about killing the chip I could run 4.9ghz at high voltage (1.475-1.48) and get about 1150 on cinebench, but I really can't be bothered killing my chip for 10% extra performance

    Really liked the video. I think the value in those chips are that they are still great and cheap for used server builds. I got two X5675's for $50 and used dell server for $150 (came with the RAM, PSU, and motherboard). What I would like to see maybe is him get a used server build from ebay and slap a semi modern GPU in it for a cheap gaming setup.

    I bought on eBay a x5660 with asus sabertooth x58 motherboard combo for 220$ total (shipping was $10) last year Jan 2017, made more sense to buy that then a locked i5 for same price, or more expensive unlocked i5. 6 months later, ryzen came out. Now I'm happy I got 6 core CPU, games will now be optimized for it since it's more popular. I'm pretty happy, got Mobo, 6 core cpu, overclockable, for 220$ USD. Still using today!

    My main rig from 2010 to 2017 was X58-based with i7-920, later upgraded to X5650. The platform is probably the most reliable I've ever used -- a true workhorse for any occasion. I moved to X99 and 6800K, just because there was a good used parts deal available, right before the DDR4 memory price hike.
    I still keep the X58 mobo, since it's one of the rarest models -- BloodRage GTi by Foxconn -- quite remarkable high quality design.

  • @Markel_A
    @Markel_A 6 лет назад +1

    I think the biggest advantage to LGA 1366 if you can find a cheap motherboard is value for money. With how ridiculous DDR4 prices are today, it's way easier to go with something like a x5660/x5650 with a 3.8-4+ GHz overclock, especially considering you can easily find 24GB kits of DDR3 for super cheap on ebay. Compare that to the price of even 16GB of DDR4 you'd need to buy in order to upgrade to Ryzen or CoffeeLake and that alone is a pretty good reason to stay on the socket. More so when you consider you can still get really good gaming performance out of CPUs that can be frequently found for less than $100.

    Using a dual socket b(dual x5677) workstation as we speak, paid 450$ for it, a rx480 and a 512gb ssd the same month the 480 launched. I think i did pretty well. The real question is why would use a 1080 with a x58 set up. A budget gpu and a frames/dollar graph would be more appropriate.

    You can find X58 motherboards and yes they are kind of expensive, but given that you can buy a CPU for $40 or $50, and then you can add in DDR3 for dirt cheap, you can probably set up a 6 core system with a moderate overclock, 24GB RAM for a fraction of the cost of a newer system that has even 16GB RAM.

  • @DasDoubleD
    @DasDoubleD 6 лет назад

    The only X58 system I own is an HP Z400 I was able to get for $50 from my recycler. Honestly, the platform still does have *some* uses, as you said. Especially as a server, despite power draw at idle, allows for tons of PCIe cards, storage, et cetera, for anyone on a budget.
    For anyone looking for X58 or budget server/gaming is better off with a used system, by and large. Most of the Dell/HP workstations have excellent power supplies capable of at least one GPU, although they're proprietary.

      I ran my x5690 until 2016 as well. I love the platform, but just looking at price to performance, unless you're able to get a killer deal on a motherboard, going with something more modern is starting to make sense.
      Especially now that AMD has started to heat things up in the CPU space again, we're going to see some pretty large leaps forward in the next few years.

    • @jforce321

I forget what the difference was when I benchmarked it, but that 920 is bullet proof, I still have it and I reckon you would still be fine gaming with it assuming you have a decent graphics card and enough ram.

    X58 is still alive and kicking ... Try an actual x58 board and overclock to 4.4 to 4.6 ghz and you are up there with a stock 5820k or 6800k ... You cant try a platform with an invalid board to draw the wrong conclusions ..

      Definitely. A fake motherboard based on a previous platform, that doesn't allow overclocking or even the use of Triple Channel memory isn't really a fair assessment of the x58/LGA1366 platform.

    If you can get a good board for cheap with overclocking capabilities then I think the x58 is a good choice for really really tight budgets. However, an older platform.will only get you so far. At that point your better off getting an R3 1200 and keep a decent upgrade path for a couple years.

    X58 still has some fire in it, especially those more powerful gen 1 i7s and of course that x5690. The same can't be said for stuff on AMD's side. That said, unless you have a good x58 board already or able to get a steller deal on one, its not worth it for most people. I'm sure that x5690 would have performed a bit better if it had the tri-channel ram access and you'd been able to overclock it but I think the 2600G would have still beat it in most cases due to more efficient multicore use and additional instruction sets like AVX. On top of that, there's the straight power use. Like all older performance parts, they're power hungry.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 6 лет назад

      IDK, I've seen an FX-8350 stock do 200 fps on Fortnite when the i7 6700k (overcklocked to 4.5 Ghz) could only do 240 fps. Both running CPU benchmark style with 360p resolution at lowest settings to ensure no bottlenecks. The FX ran the GTX 960, and the i7 ran the GTX 1080, but they weren't bottlenecking because of GPU.
      FX can still do pretty good, mine is running my testbench with more firepower than my main rig (Titan Xp and 1700), and the FX is holding its own very nicely with crossfire.

    • @ericdeltoro8484
      @ericdeltoro8484 6 лет назад

      The FX-8350 is a year newer than the x5690 but its half as powerful due to the poor multicore performance and the way its designed to spread out work. It also has a lower max temperature but higher power consumption than the x5690. The only thing the FX-8350 really has going for it is that its not very expensive to buy second hand (not by much though) and the motherboards are much cheaper to buy.
      That test is also flawed, if you wanted to test the difference between processor X and processor Y, you have to use the exact same parts (sans motherboard, cpu and in the case of the 6700k, ram) A true cpu benchmark would have used the same gpu because the gtx 1080 is far more powerful than the gtx 960. That aside, the 6700k is a far stronger processor than the FX-8350 for the same reason that the x5690 is more powerful than the FX-8350. The style of multicore processing that AMD used in the FX series (and in the Phenom series, I believe) isn't anywhere as efficient as Intel's. That's why Ryzen chips use the same multicore processing style as Intel chips now, because its flat out better.
      I'm running a FX-9590 and its pretty bad though its only redeeming quality is that I got it for $65. The main reason why I say this is that the i3 8350k, a budget oriented chip, performs just as well at stock performance and out performs it by quite a bit when overclocked. I didn't really expect anything too fantastic out of the 9590 when I bought it, I kinda just wanted it because it was the first retail chip to be sold as 5Ghz capable. The 8350k can easily hit 5ghz, if not higher with sufficient cooling and still use half the power that the FX-9590 manages to use.

    • @ericdeltoro8484
      @ericdeltoro8484 6 лет назад

      I'm not saying that you can't game on a FX chip, its just not the best thing out there. i5 4690Ks are fairly cheap to come across, if not slightly more expensive than a FX-8350 and perform as well, if not better than a FX-8350 clocked at 5Ghz and still uses a fraction of the power.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 6 лет назад

      I don't think the 960 vs 1080 matters, should be the same driver overhead. Also no GPU bottleneck since I was testing at 360p which is 1/4 of even 720p. Even the Ryzen G2200 integrated graphics should hit well over 200 fps (it actually does 60 fps at 1080p, which is 9x more pixels = 540 fps ideally at 360p). Sure I could have put my Titan Xp in both of them, but honestly potatoes could run the graphics without bottleneck. I aim for 200 fps at 4k in that game, which is 38x more pixels (theoretically 7,600 fps at 360p, if you had the i7 at 142+ Ghz to keep up...)

      My cinebench 15 score is 510, that's on a phenom II x6 running 3.9 GHz. A 6 core Xeon of this generation will double that in an overclock. Of course you could have a 12 core Opteron back in the same day, just as good for server tasks as the Xeon, but not good for workstation and gaming.
      Bulldozer/Piledriver is pretty decent out of the box for the time, but completely jumps off power/performance cliff if you try to overclock it significantly, a nice Phenom overclock can hit pretty close.

    There are overclockable X58 boards out there for about 20% more if you're willing to really scour the web and look locally as well. If you're ok with foregoing overclocking, you can try to track down something like an old Dell Studio XPS 9100 motherboard, which can be had for $60-80. I scored an X58 Sabertooth locally (in a city of about 100,000 people--not big at all) for $60 just by being in the right place at the right time. Wasting $100 on a P55 hackjob that can't overclock and runs dual-channel isn't giving X58 a fair shake, nor is buying a CPU that sells for as much as a Ryzen 5 1600 when you'd have gotten better results by buying a $20 X5650 and overclocking it to hell and back. Had you gone a little bit higher on motherboard quality and price, you'd have gotten something much closer to your 2400G.
    What you have here is a review of a POS Chinese motherboard that has no business running an X58 CPU. Even at stock speeds on a dumpster fire of a motherboard, I would venture a guess that your X5690 performance was a whole lot closer to stock 2400G performance, and for someone who might be looking at, say, 2200G or 2400G+A320 as what they can afford, a $20 X5650 on a $150 motherboard with dramatically cheaper DDR3 RAM suddenly makes a whole lot of sense. I hope you're able to revisit this video down the line as a proper X58 review, and not a review of an X58 setup after you've broken one of its legs, given it a concussion and stolen its lunch money.

    I have the same unbuffered ECC memory you used. I can't get it to run anywhere close to its rated speed or timings on any board. I suspect that's not the boards fault? Max i could get was around 1500MHz. On the up side, the tighter timings at lower speeds means the real world difference is minimal.

    Hi, good vid as always, but I will make some considerations to why I think this wasn't a fair comparison because you didn't used 2 of the best things that the platform has to offer
    1- triple channel memory with cheap ddr3 memory
    2- I know that this board can't overclock but the good part of this xeons are that they are excellent overclockers, this would make the xeon the clear winner, and in my opinion anyone that's buying cpu for this platform are looking to overclock
    Besides this 2 factors, great vid, keep with the good work and sorry for my terrible English

    x58 is absolutely still good in 2018. You just have to use a decent mobo that can overclock. Brian from tech YES city jsut did a side by side with the 8700k and the differences were minimal at 1080p. that cinebench score will easily break 1000 if you could OC the chip to 4.4ghz+, which is easily attainable. Triple channel memory makes a difference as well.

    I was looking into various iterations of these Chinese Brand X58 motherboards myself as LGA1366 socket Xeon CPU's are really cheap here in the UK, especially compared to any potential competing options from other brands/generations, likes you say though the X58 Chipset motherboards are still really overpriced for their age, however I still feel the LGA1366 still offers much better value than newer parts, I previously had (still have got it) a i5 6600k (at 4.9Ghz on air) based system with 16GB 2133Mhz RAM & a GTX1060 6GB as my main rig, but the motherboard BIOS chip on it failed after just 2 years, so whilst weighing up options I took a chance and purchased a HP Z600 Workstation with Dual Xeon X5650's, 48GB of RAM @ 1333Mhz and moved all my existing parts such as GPU and Storage to the Z600 from my i5 based Rig, despite its age the Dual Xeon system draws about the same amount of power whilst gaming and yet has much lower CPU usage (85% in GTA V for i5 - 11% in GTA V for Dual X5650), and you can actually overclock/undervolt the Xeons on the HP Z600 using software within windows plus even further with a Custom BIOS that you can flash all whilst keeping temps lower than at stock settings, X58 may no longer be the best option but LGA1366 is still the best value IMO, thanks once again for your video
    Edit: My i5 6600K system set me back £1100 when purchased in August 2015, the HP Z600 system set me back just £400 and adjusting for price fluctuation on SSD's & GPU's still ended up costing about £300 less

    I just recently moved on from X58 and my X5677. Honestly, while I do get better performance on my 8600k in just about every respect, the difference wasn't as striking as I thought it would be. Only a few games really benefitted from the upgrade (namely Rise of the Tomb Raider) and I think that's mostly because I'm on Windows 10 and DX12.
    Suffice to say though, if you can find X58 machines on Craigslist and you're looking to get into PC gaming, it's a good buy, especially if you're comfortable with over clocking. My X5677 only cost me $45 on eBay, but you can also use CPUs like the X5650, which can OC to the same speeds as the X5677 and sometimes go for as little as $9.

    The issue with x58 boards and still is. Is the price. A used board is many times the same price as a new current gen entry boards. Some here in sweden are around $120+ depending on make and model. I sold one Asus premium x58 board for about $170. They are a nice performing platform but they just don't have the driver support anymore nor the warranty. So if anyone has a tight budget. Don't buy the x58 as a longterm gaming platform. I only switched from my i7 930 about 2 years ago to a 6700k. I didn't have to. I just wanted to. So it's still considered a beast imo.

    I really think X58 systems are good if you already have one, but mobos are expensive and rare.
    I'll go ahead and stick with more mainstream boards myself, but a good set up on X58 will do you just fine if you have one.

    x58 is still viable if you can pick up even a low end board cheap. Pair that with a hex core xeon with a 4-4.2ghz OC and you're golden.
    Only issue is the boards being so old are starting to be "flaky" alike a lot of early 1155 stuff and 1156 boards as they're all getting to that age.

    the x58 system would perform significantly better if it had triple channel memory and had the cpu and ram overclocked. the x5675 can be overclocked to 4.5ghz and possibly higher

  • @IronicTonic8
    @IronicTonic8 6 лет назад

    I wonder if there would have been a significant difference with true triple channel memory and a good healthy overclocked xeon. I'm running an x58 system right now with an Asus P6T and xeon X5680 running at a conservative 4.2ghz. Would that level the playing field, or maybe tip the outcome in favor of the x58 platform? It just might. I'm only curious for academic reasons.

    • @CraftComputing
      @CraftComputing  6 лет назад

      It would certainly have leveled the playing field. Tech YES City did a video this same week, where he came to the exact opposite conclusion as me using an x5675 OC'd on a proper motherboard. The OC on x58 makes all the difference in the world for performance, but there are other factors to consider.
      Power draw and board age are two huge cons, as I mentioned. Most chips will draw double to power for the same performance as modern chips, and x58 motherboards are typically between 7-10 years old at this point. Yes, they still work, but there are far better new options if you're looking at building something today.

    • @IronicTonic8
      @IronicTonic8 6 лет назад

      Good point about the power consumption and age of the hardware. I definitely support the average user to go with new hardware to eliminate risks and get a warranty. I'm really enjoying your content, keep it coming. Fortunately the x58 system is a secondary PC for me, I built it recently out of boredom and I did it on a budget ($100 for the CPU and Mobo together). I had a lot of fun tweaking it to get the overclock dialed in with minimal increase in voltage (I'm not looking to over stress a 10 year old board). My primary system is an i7 8700k and it does most of the heavy lifting for me.

    Searched this mobo and bookmarked it on ebay. I have a old i7 930 Bloomfield that I have lying around from when I upgraded my main desktop to a i7 990x gulf town. I know it will be sketchy, but I do have a tiny form factor case that this will fit in, so stuff I have laying around could be tied together just by this mobo.
    I will wait to see if the price comes down (its now 80$) further and try to scoop it up for cheap.

    This is a question about an x79 CPU. Is the Xeon E5-2620 a good combo for a 1070 or 1080? If so, which one goes betyer with it?

    • @CraftComputing
      @CraftComputing  6 лет назад

      With the clock at only 2.0GHz, the E5-2620 will struggle at 1080p. The CPU becomes less of a bottleneck at 1440p. If you have a 1440p monitor, then either GPU will do just fine. If you're at 1080p, I would stick with the 1070, as you'll likely run into CPU limitations with the GTX 1080.

    Running a X5650 here at 4 Ghz on an Asus P6TDeluxe V2. Yes, it's not the greatest and latest concerning power efficiency or I/O and the ICH10R doesn't RAID that well with the newest Intel RST drivers which causes more trouble with the latest Windows 10 RS4 and RS5 Insider Previews, but overall it is still a viable gaming platform. Which other platform aged that well?! I can't think of any.

    You'd probably get smilar performance with a (non-overclokable) x68 workstation from the likes of apple/lenovo/dell. The 2009/2010/2012 mac pro, the dell t3500/t5500/t7500, the lenovo thinkstation S20/D20. You could probably still pick up an s20 thinkstation for $80. Coupled with a decent graphics and a fast cpu (x5690,x5680), you'd get a decent station that doesn't bottleneck the graphics card all that much. Of course ideally you'd want an overclockable x58 mobo. But those run as expensive as a skylake mobo/cpu. It defeats the purpose of using x58 in the first place. They're also very likely to fail at anytime due to their age.

I got a pair of X5690s at 60eur each just awaiting the arrival of my cooler from the USA, very hard to get hold of. It's going to kick a**e. Yes the power requirements are huge, but it's really nice to have a fast performing system that can get the job done (differing tasks). As for the crashing issues Craft Computing is experiencing, not sure what that's about. T7500 has never crashed (yet).

    Probably LGA2011/X79 processors make sense if at all due to the many lanes and the M.2 (NVMe) connection.
    If ECC is really supported is questionable (ZFS/FreeNAS).
    The LGA1366/x58 are simply too weak of the IPC values and generally one is better off with B75/Sandy/Ivy... because the advantages of the "server" processor are no longer available. Overclocking only works on expensive motherboards, a used Ryzen V1 makes more sense out of price and performance.

  • @Bareego
    @Bareego 6 лет назад

    Would have been nice to include the not overclocked values of the Ryzen 5 as well, not everyone is into overclocking and I guess the difference wouldn't have been that big. Also you don't mention that the min frames were sometimes better on the Xeon, which for some people is more important than max framerate. I also wouldn't recommend these Chinese boards, but rather check locally for retired servers with Xeons going for dirt cheap, many of them have oodles of memory.

    Still rocking an x58 system but I don't think I'd chance a board like this... I have an x5650 at 4.4 on an Asus P6x58d-e deluxe.
    The ability to run xeons and the triple channel memory have definitely given it an extended life, the only thing I'd criticise are it's Sata speeds but throw a cheap raid/hba card in or a pci-e nvme and you're good to go on.
    I just can't justify a whole new rig while it continues to boot up and run flawlessly and I keep my eye open for people selling them (most know their value so the bargains are gone) as I have 3 Xeon chips and some ram that would make a nice ESXi server (I run an i5 haswell with 32gb but the board only has 1 pci-e and it houses an Intel dual Nic as the onboard isn't supported and I had issues getting it to keep the workaround staying active).
