  • "Was I a good CPU?" The AMD FX-8350, the budget king of CPUs back in 2012, has not aged well over the last 11 years. But don't throw out that old gaming rig just yet! If you've got working storage, memory and a power supply, you can rebuild it faster than ever before. With a Chinese X79 Motherboard and Xeon CPU of course!
But first... What am I drinking???
The Rogue Dead Guy Ale is a staple of craft beer drinkers the world over, and now it comes in IPA form! The Rogue Dead Guy IPA clocks in at 7.0%, and might just be the best beer in the series!

Here in Europe B450 destroyed that value. Those motherboards are to be had for around 50 euro's second hand, add a cheap 5500 or 5600 and you are at the same price as the Chinese aliexpress X99 system would go for. And a 5500 can be overclocked safely to 4.7 GHZ and run around 75 to 90 watts at that speed.

We could do with a lot less e-waste and there are many people in poor countries for whom these boards and cpus represent a chance to buy and use something relatively modern. Heck, there are possibly American and European children who can't afford to pay $300 for an entry level B650 or B760 motherboard. For half that price, they get a CPU included in the deal so kudos to chinese engineers and manufacturers for keeping this trend going.

      100~ USD compared to 300 USD(which is the price for a b450/A520 and a R5 5600)
even better some ryzen stuff can be had for even less like old b350 boards and used 3xxx series. I got a b450 board for 40 usd and ryzen 3700x for 70 usd. thats a great build for cheap compared to old low clocked xeons.

But now that were screaming into the twenty twenties and a single core on a i9 13900ks can outperform all 8 cores of an FX chip it's definitely time to move off that as a main rig, first gen ryzen parts are so cheap on the market now I would prob go that route over the x79 since the upgrade path is better on those am4 systems vs the x79 systems. I still run some fx based APUs for messing around with stuff and for light work or older games they do just fine, but since they will never support newer windows they will be limited to windows 10 and linux for the foreseeable future.

This build perfectly highlights how frustrating my brother's stubbornness is. He's on a similarly dying AMD FX platform system, but he has a GTX 980Ti and 16GB of 1866 DDR3. Skipping doordash for a month would get him enough of an upgrade to run Warzone and Discord simultaneously, but he refused to put money into his system unless he can change out every single part down to the cables.

Thing is, if you went with intel for the same budget in 2012, you'd have ended up with a 2500k which would *also* desperately need an upgrade today. They aged about the same, with some games actually favoring the 8 threads on the FX.
THt said, X79 looks like a decent budget option to re-use that DDR3 memory. Especially if you can get a quad-channel board.

Although half the capacity (1TB vs this 2TB) for a few bucks more you can get a Samsung 980 Pro at 3.5GB/Sec on PCI-E 3 systems and 7GB/sec in the future upgrade on PCI-E 4. Some MOBOs allow you to SSD cache from a mag disk giving you a nice alternative.

nvme is pointless for games (so it is for most other tasks that don't involve moving or processing hefty loads of data). while switching from an hdd to a sata ssd decreases load times from like 1+ min to ~10-15 sec, sata ssd vs nvme ssd is like ~10-15 sec to 2-5 sec. yes, technically noticeable, but i'd say not worth it, especially on a budget system
