      @@techyescity 1650 v2 actually might make more sense from a value perspective. At ~$75USD they’ll reliably hit 4.2GHz all-core on the Precisions, and put up Cinebench R15 scores in the mid-1100s with cheap quad channel! I’ve put together several of them as very cheap Ryzen-chasers.
      There’s a thread over on the TechPowerUp forums for Throttlestop (and XTU) overclocking workstations, with some spectacular results.

      @@NextMerckx Agreed. The cooling and airflow on these OEM chasses is IMO not up to snuff when it comes to the heat from an OC'd E5-1680v2. A E5-1650V2 is an excellent choice and at today's prices is a price/performance gem. At 4.2Ghz, these babies run stable and will last. Sure, they can hit 4.5Ghz+ with decent cooling, but on a low cost second-hand OEM desktop server, they are the perfect choice for an all-arounder that can do Hi 1080P gaming. Pair it with a RX 580 8GB and you have a little beast on the "cheap".

    • @cometxp
      @cometxp 4 года назад +3

      Yeah but Threadripper has multiple NUMA nodes, yeah it is 32 cores, but its shared upon multiple NUMA nodes. Yet most software aren't NUMA aware and therefore unable to use the full potential of the Threadripper. And since its a lot of cores, the base and boost clocks will be significantly reduced which would cut the performance even more. And not to mention here, zen although its great, its has a worse single threaded performance.

It was in an unused workstation, never aktive but testet. 5960 X is possible for 150€, or you have to have luck. But this morning i saw a bundle of an intel X58 Desktop board together with an Core i7 Extreme Edition 980X. It startet with 50€. I love intel Desktop boards. There are DX79 TO Desktop boards for 50€. They don´t have the vrm cooler at the top, i think that it could be cooler without it. They have a lot of this boards. But the Intel x79 Desktop boards never get an Ivybridge Biosupdate. They work but they aren´t supportet by Intel. But with an E5- 1660, mobo and CPU for 110€ together it is a nice thing, i think.

    Bryan, I have a 7990 dual gpu that can still get up and boogy enough, tis works okay along with decent psu, ssd and hard drive along with the older AMD 1100T so just need a MOBO - board for this CHIP - Reccomendations? I want to throw this build together for my nephew to do some light to medium gaming and just get him started on the web as well, he is young and just starting so these parts are just laying around my house thus again, I just need a good board with good chipset for the 1100T. .....Anybody know the best board/chipset ever released for the old boy = 1100T cpu so I can put this together for him? I do not mind spending a bunch on the board if it gets me the best overclocking possible as I also have a nice cooler for it already to ... I liked the small ZOTAC boards they have (seem to be the only ones) for the Phenom 2's as they are ITX(!) and built in wifi, for the time, thats great however I looked and those boards seem to be 95 watt max which would need a 1065T - 95 watt version at best as once move to 1075T and 1090T as well as the last 1100T they are all 125watts. Anyone want to even swap a 1100T for a 1065 95 watt version only - even up? ...Ideas on the BEST mobo, 1100T? Smaller be nice but its not a problem if its standard or larger, matx, just want it to be good too great, smaller would be bonus when comes time to buy the final part as in the case which I already have an eye on a cool sleeper case... as hes actually into that, being so young it surprised me but it is what it is... Thanks in advance and this is a great video. I am typing this from my 1650 v0 at a locked 6/12 .....4.9ghz all core using a dell (made by pny) blower style 1060 6gb on my 2K LG ULTRAWIDE 34 INCH curved monitor and secondary 1080p monitor - never a hiccup... Anyways, The ONLY issue with these great sandy and ivy bridge chips is (or at Last the sandys) with windows 10 at least, they can not hibernate/sleep without freezing sometimes after awhile, sometimes having the dual bios corrupt itself somehow and have to refresh itself even... its super annoying cause everything else is so smooth and buttery. I am extra irritated recently as I tried SOLUS OS (The best linux distro ever IMO and just works on boot, no drivers installed, dual monitors - easy transistion) and what do you know my 3rd gen sandybridge xeon could go to sleep or hiibernate just fine so its NOT a hardware issue, its the damn windows / intel collab to make it this way 'I suppose as they are still "too good" , for to long in thier eyes prob... I am trying caffiene now but wish it just worked the-way it was intended! What is windows doing or not doing that solus is, I mean c'mon man! HAH... All this time I thought it was a hiccup in the gigabyte assasin 2 mobo, its NOT... Its a widespread problem people been trying to work to fix fully since 2013 all the way until today if google it correctly, insanity! ..... That leaves out the part on how many folks just got rid of thier system because of it and how many think it is some other issue as it can be tricky to realize whats happening....

    Great video, as someone who only has a 1650 xeon in his X79 (as of today!), I am very tempted to give the system a last squirt of life before I retire her under the bed as I can pickup this 1680 v2 CPU for 85 dollars now. Its basically the best CPU that you can buy for the X79.
    Money is tight atm and I only have a 6gb rtx, but I think if I upgraded to the 1680 V2 and give its a mildISH overclock, I would have 70 percent better benchmark scores AND if I trade in this GPU and update it for something with 8GB and add a 100 dollars or so maybe 2080 super or 6600 xt or 6650 xt) (I'm british but speaking in dollars) I could have a nice boost to my system for about 175 dollars, which seems much more appealing that spending close to 1000 to do a proper upgrade.
    My 1650 does about 8000 in passmark, the 1680v2 in stock form does about 12800. (cpu benchmark DOT NET)
    With a fairly mild overclock, that should be possible to up to about 14500-15000, which is nearly double my existing CPU.
    Add in another 25% on the GPU and I honestly think for less than 200 dollars and no hassle I could be rocking the X79 platform for a fair bit longer.
    With the amount of graphic options in games, you can actually turn a lot of the effects down and still retain good FPS and lose not a lot of quality.
    The obvious route is to move onto ryzen or something, I get it probably makes more sense (lower TDP), but I like the idea of showing a bit of loyalty to the system that has served me so well for 10 years now and not spending much to get a decent boost right now.
    Thanks for the 1680 v2 vids, you defo convinced me to consider going there, even at the start of 2023.
    If I can hold back as long as possible on the upgrades so when I do the big upgrade I can get the much newer stuff like AM5 and hopefully have a system which will serve me for another 10 years, minus the 4-5 year GPU upgrade.

    I'm a long time Tylersburg X58 OC'r & loved it but I had to admit, even 1st gen Sandy Bridge (E5-1660) was nice improvement on my trusty ASUS P9X79-E WS & DDR-2400 Cl10. 4.3Ghz out the box XMP with TPU enabled. i was like wow! but then onto the 1690-v2. My mobo never officially supported it but it works w/ BIOS v1203 - 1704. But for us blokes who did drop some quid on this, make use of it (£1,200). It's tempermental on mine but OC's fair & temps not bad coming from a 4.6Ghz 1660 on air.
    I agree, Keeping these CPU's u over 4.2 needs a good mobo and power control & cooling. i'm impressed to add that even at a respectful 4400 daily that ASUS S4/S4 works. Never did on any of X58's (REII/IIIE, P6X58-E WS & P6T WS) at anything out of a mild OC. Simple featue we take for granted.

      Some of the brand new Chinese X79 and X99 boards are pretty decent and come in at $100 or less. You can't get the absolute most out of the chip with the X79 ones due to no voltage control, but I had my 1650 v2 at 4.2GHz no problems on an X79 Turbo. The X99 ones, especially the Huananzhi TF and F8, are even better and DO have voltage control, allowing you to get up to 4.5-4.6GHz. The Haswell Xeons really aren't much more expensive either, at least where I live, plus you also have the consumer i7s as an option like the 5960X.

    Bryan, remember, the 3930K *was* an 8-core, just with 2 cores disabled (check original reviews). So Intel had already been holding back for some time; they could have released a consumer 8c for X79 anytime, they chose not to since back then AMD could barely compete with the 2500K. Later XEONs as you say proved what was possible for the X&9 socket; consumers got screwed early on.
    The real takeaway from the results though is that, if one believed those who love to diss older hardware, what you observed should not be possible. Older systems are far more potent than most people realise.

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 4 года назад

      @Charles Clarke Indeed, yes I know (though most later 3930Ks will happily do 4.7 or 4.8); I have three R4Es, with a 4930K (also at 4.5), 4820K and 3930K, plus a P9X79 WS with 3930K (and 4x GTX 580 3GB), a P9X79-E WS with a 4960X, another -E with a 2680 v2 and lastly a standard P9X79 WS again with a 2680 v2. Not in use atm are four more 3930Ks, a 3970X and some other XEONs. I've done a lot of stuff with X79. :} Here's the WS with the 580s:
      www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/3930K_quad580_13.jpg
      Note btw much of my testing was done with high RAM capacity setups. I was one of the very first to achieve a high oc on a WS with a 3930K and 64GB RAM @ 2133. ASUS helped me do it, needed some non-standard tweaking (they said no tech reviewer had used so much RAM; I was building a rig for a solo pro who used AE).
      I had another WS but I donated that to the Learn Engineering channel, also with a 2680 v2:
      ruclips.net/video/g2WiJNEZLNY/видео.html

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 4 года назад

      @Charles Clarke It's completely nuts. :D The oc on the 3930K isn't huge, only 4.7, but the key part is the system has max 64GB RAM @ 2133, that was tricky to get stable, especially with four GTX 580s @ 900MHz. It was for researching CUDA performance for pro apps, the 580s being faster back then than two Titan Blacks, and especially strong for FP64. One pain though was the MSI 580s are just sligthly wider than 2 slots (by about 1 or 2mm), making it a real pain to fit them in, with of course barely any airflow for the upper three cards, despite the 4 intake fans. If they were on water loops they could run much faster, the model in question reaching 1GHz core in most cases.
      Oh, I forgot, I have another WS board with a 3930K and 64GB, the original pro app build I did for someone in 2013, now returned as I upraded his setup back in January to a 2700X on an Asrock X470 Taichi, again with 64GB but now at 3200. Better performance than the 3930K was at 4.7, but without any oc needed, so more efficient, better stability, etc. (after being hammered for 7 years with After Effets alongside three GTX 580s, the 3930K was beginning to degrade). See:

    • @flozam5468
      @flozam5468 4 года назад +2

      True.. if core for core performance is key... but latency and reliability are the key points over the ryzen... besides its a bit like having a resto-mod car... it would make more sense just to buy the new factory model, yet sometimes you just want the old shape... f.y.i:- my 1680 system with 5700xt gets a 3dmark timespy score of 9791... You've gotta have a hell of a 2700 overclock to come close....

    • @jb678901
      @jb678901 3 года назад

      I think the point is that many people already have or can acquire cheap DDR3, which in quad channel and low latency is a cost benefit. Same for the PSU and Cooler. However, if you have to start the build from scratch, then yes, a Ryzen platform makes a lot of sense...or at least it did before recent market prices make Ryzen a premium choice overall.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 3 года назад

      DDR3 is cheaper, the Xeon supports more RAM, more PCIe lanes, a higher end platform that generally has more expansion and connectivity, and in certain workloads the better latencies and single core performance on the 1680 V2 would lead to much better performance. I use a 3700x right now and I would never have purchased Zen or Zen+ CPUs because of those deficiencies.

    I'm currently running a system with a 1680 v2 at 4.25ghz and 16gb quad-channel at 2400mhz using a 112.5mhz BCLK and loving it! I'd clock my CPU higher but I need to improve the cooling in my system otherwise the CPU temp can go over 80c under load. I'll probably start off by getting new case fans and THEN get a new CPU cooler because I want to make sure overall system cooling is maximized first. I'm using a Cooler Master MasterAir MA620P, which, although decent, just isn't enough for this CPU to really push it. Although considering how I got the cooler in nearly perfect condition from a certified eBay refurbisher for only $30, I definitely can't complain. Who knows, maybe just adding some better fans to the cooler and to the case will make just enough difference.

    • @jb678901

      I would avoid the motherboard stresses from the BLCK OC and go for Bryan's OC tutorial (using the X79 ASUS ROG IV). Worked for me. 4.4Ghz / 1.281 V with 100MHz BLCK on the ASUS P9X79Pro. Temp are excellent. At idle, it runs around 9C over ambient; currently 29C. With Prime95 (Vers.26.6 with default settings) it maxes out to 79C on CPU Package Temp. Unit is air cooled by a PCCooler GI-D66A.

    • @CryptoJordanVR
      @CryptoJordanVR 4 года назад +1

      @@jb678901 Yeah, but here's the thing. From what I've read, increasing the BCLK increases the frequency of the CPU cache whereas the multiplier does not. At least that's what I've been lead to believe. I haven't actually run any Cache based benchmarks to test that out yet. Besides, I've actually gone up to 125mhz BCLK before. It even passed 2 runs in Cinebench R20 so I thought it was stable until it finally gave me a BSOD several hours later. So, since that is my VERY upper limit, I think I'll be perfectly fine at 112.5mhz.
