Some commentators were bitching about the gun's heavy trigger pull. Being a former combat veteran (82nd. Airborne), let me clarify a very important point. When on the range, go ahead and bitch about the trigger. Your right. But when you are up against a deadly threat, and your world is spinning, that same trigger feels like a 1lb. pull. Why? ADRENALIN! Enough said.
I was 3rd ID. and I agree with you about the trigger pull weight. But this thing is junk. I am no fan of Glock. I am not going down the Ford / Chevy road. I'm simply calling a spade a spade. S&W is more closely related to a HiPoint.
I’ve had a Brigadier 96 for 20 years. It’s smooth as hell, groupings are easily achieved. Properly cleaned and oiled it’ll be smooth as butter. I love 40
I would absolutely say that my sd9 is better than my glock, with a couple thousand rounds thru both, the Smith performs just as good. They have both been 100 percent reliable with any and all ammo. But the Smith does at for much less money. In my opinion the SW/SD series are hands down one of the best values EVER to be had in a handgun
@CFSVA14 None No, it is not. It is every bit as reliable as a Glock with better build quality. I own dozens of pistols, and consider myself a professional with firearms (years of military and other armed experience). Money does not equal quality in firearms.
@@genericsername Dude I'm actually embarrassed for you. You obviously ( based on your channel and video game playing). Have no idea about working and how important it is to buy American made products. Tell your mother to buy American.
I love my S&W 40. I've been carrying it for over 5 years and my only real complaint is with the cheap factory sights. I replaced them with some Trujicon glo sights a few years ago and it's a remarkably accurate firearm, I LOVE it!!
Jesus, all you glock fanboys need to chill. Don't be mad at the man because he acknowledged the fact that glocks are overpriced. Sure they're really nice guns, but they aren't worth 500+$ in my opinion.
Dakota Fulps I find the 500+$ very worth it in my opinion. Glocks can withstand pretty much anything. Mud, dirt, dust, etc. Of my experience using them, I had never had any type of failure, troubleshooting, etc. I took them to the range and was making 10-15 meter headshots spot on with using only the stock sights. With that 500+$ you're using it to protect your life. It may suck having to pay that much but for me, its totally worth it. But if it's out of someones budget significantly, then I would go with the Sigma.
That Condom You Didnt Use Last Night Glock 40's do not stand up to prolong shootings. They start breaking. That is why most police departments have switched back to the 9 mm.
I just visited a range in my area and was chatting with the "expert" behind the counter. I asked his opinion on a few guns and he put down everything I asked him about, including my current carry weapon the SD9VE. His immediate response was "Oh, you don't want to carry that." I started to agree because I've wanted a smaller carry weapon, which is why I was browsing, but he continues by saying "I had a guy in one of my CCW classes that used one of those and had 235 out of 500 rounds fail. That's why we won't even take them in trade here anymore." Uhhhhh... bull crap? If a gun fails at that rate it's either user error or they just got the crappiest one out of that batch. I should have seen this coming, but after putting everything down (S&W, Beretta, etc.) he told me "What you really want to carry is this," and he hands me a baby Glock. I told him "Glocks are good, but I don't like the way they fit in my hand and they don't point naturally for me at all." He comes back with "I was the same way at first, but now I compete regularly and this gun" (points to his waist) "has had 80,000 rounds through it with NOT ONE FAILURE WHATSOEVER." Immediately my brain thought "I'm calling shenanigans on this guy and getting out of here." I thanked him and left with a bad taste in my mouth. Everyone else at the range was incredibly polite and welcoming, but that guy just kinda ruined it for me. From now on I'm just going to tell any gun shop employees I talk to right up front, "Rule 1, don't recommend Glock. They don't fit my hand and I'm not going to buy one." I don't have anything against Glocks, but I DO hate the tunnel vision some Glock owners develop. That's why I like TYM. He owns and carries Glocks, but he doesn't claim they were built by Jesus Christ himself.
I kind of agree. I think they're amazing guns. But that don't mean they're for every single shooter. I carry a Glock and two Glock clones (S&W40 and Diamondback 380) I do love Glocks. But when someone says "They don't fit my hand" I say in reply "To each his own".
OzrithClay That's the perfect response. I respect the reliability of Glocks, and they have a pretty good trigger. I'm only a little sad they don't work for me personally. It's not just that I don't like the way they feel. I actually have a slightly deformed shooting-hand pinky because of an accident back in my boy scout days. When I curl my fingers in that pinky rubs up against my ring finger ever so slightly. It's not a problem with normal, day-to-day activities, but the aggressive finger grooving on the grips of glocks make it uncomfortable enough that I don't enjoy shooting them. Plus they just don't point naturally for me. There are plenty of other firearms out there that work great for me, so I'll stick with those. I have nothing against Glocks themselves at all. They're great, they just aren't for me.
My opinion has always been carry what works best for you. Buying a gun is kind of like buying a vehicle. Just because one guy likes the car he drives it doesn't mean you should go buy the same one. Best advice is go to a shooting range where you can rent guns to shoot. Test out a bunch of them and then decide which gun you want. There's nothing worse than spending 300 plus on a gun that you have never even got to shoot only to find out it doesnt work well for you.
I just got my SD9VE yesterday, I am honestly impressed with the quality of this pistol, at $275 new I am very happy, Thanks for this video!! Helped with my decision.
Exactly. For as close as the S&W SD is to the Glock, I'd take the S&W any day for no other reason than that it IS American made. I own the SD9VE and I love it.
I thought S&W outsource to other countries? Didn't they also sign the anti-Second amendment bigotry agreement with the Clinton regime. Only Ruger is 100% American
Unlike a Glock, it won't slide and dice your fingers or bite the back of your hand BECAUSE it has a beaver tail and room to place your fingers on the frame below a smoothed-edged slide and not the razor-sharp edge of a Glock slide. A 40SW Glock is the only gun to ever bite the back of my hand shooting one-handed. I shot a 40SW Beretta PX4, Springfiled XD(m) and S&W M&P. Nonew of those bit my hand. Only the Glockodile.
@Jay there is no form in a gun fight happens to fast you better learn to shoot one handed and weak hand also. the slide didnt bite him from shooting one handed it did because had his hand up to far on a gun with no beavertail
You can't go wrong with the SD9/40ve either way. Especially for a new shooter looking for a self defense pistol. Not just because of the price, but because of the trigger that a lot of people talk down about. This was the first gun I ever shot about 2&1/2 years ago at my CCW/CPL class and I did exceptionally well. The reason the trigger is good for a new shooter in the role of self-defense is because it's very unlikely your going to let off a round that you didn't intend to.
My dad owns the SD40VE and he has borrowed a glock. Personally the Glock has a lot better trigger but the SD can be modified. I shot the Glock better but only because of the trigger until we changed the SD's. My honest opinion is that the SD is much better overall for the price difference, but Glock mags are a lot easier to find.
Rick Slade Glock is way better then a fucking wack ass Walther PPQ , Glock is superior reliable accurate light weight affordable great grip texture list goes on and on Glock wins all the time
I’d be willing to bet your just one of those people who hate anything that’s popular. There is a reason why glock is so widely used by law enforcement and civilians alike, it’s just a damn good shooting and reliable firearm. Take your ugly ppq and stick it you gun hipster. I own a glock 19,17 and a 20 and I have never had an issue with any of them. And I don’t wanna hear that I’m a “glocktard” I own a sig sauer, ruger , and I’m about to buy a sd40ve as well but nothing ticks me off more then people hating on Glocks for no other reason then they’re are just stubborn contrarians. I guess all the millions of glock owners are just blind sheep and you have it all figured out. Truly an idiot you are.
@John Nolan mine will :-) I have a cool s2000.. I like the rear wheel drive coupes, got a Mazda mx5 also, looking to buy a first gen Mazda miata soon aswell
I have the 9mm version, actually the first gun I ever bought. I also own a Glock 19. They are very comparable to each other, and they both have some things I like on each. Glock has a better trigger to me. I like the slide, mag release and magazines better on the Smith. They pop out like butter every time. I feel like I can shoot the Glock a little better due to the lighter trigger even though I've shot well over 2500 rounds through the Smith without a single hiccup. I've never had a single malfunction with the Glock yet either, albeit about 1500 less rounds through it. The Glocks sights are easier to pick up, and the Smith feels more natural in my hand. The biggest factor is the price, which Smith absolutely wins here especially considering I bought mine used for $250. I like them both. The only real problem I have with the Smith is the trigger is heavy, feels a little mushy and has a long reset. A long trigger pull can be good for a carry pistol though. I've heard you can get an apex trigger kit to lighten the weight for like $25 though. I don't think it's necessary but it would make the gun shoot easier.
Cool, glad to see such a positive review on my handgun! I have a sd9ve, and love it, especially for the price, for my first new handgun purchase, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great low budget pistol. Didn't like the trigger pull though, so I bought a lighter-pull trigger spring assembly kit, but I wonder if it would have loosened up enough, as you said, to be more tolerable.
@@davidluna1459 hey don't shoot the messenger I'm just telling you my opinion, Glock looks like an early FPS Generic "Pistol" it's boring and it looks like its made out of spray painted legos by a 2 yo. @@anarchyandempires5452 just say your broke and go lol 😂 your comparing a cheap budget pistol to a Glock Lmaoo there’s a reason glocks are used by police military fbi etc. because there reliable , and live forever.
Nice Demo, thanks for your time. I too have shot many Glock and don't understand the fascination with a overpriced gun that sends bullets down range the same way as every other gun. As long as it feels good in your hand, and you can hit a target, what does it matter. Keep up the good work.
Just bought it. 14+1 capacity. Great price point, and I've fired the 9mm version as well. They seem to be solid. Not much negative things being said on them.
Carried this and shot it at the range. Never had any issues. Recoil is so good, I thought I was shooting a 9mm lol the trigger honestly isn’t a huge deal. Never bothered me. 5/5
Funny thing is my son in law bought his for $289 as well. He put 400 rounds through it and then sold it to me for, are you sitting down? For $200....For real...I gotta great gun for a great price. 1800 rounds later and, like you, I’ve had no issue other than the slide won’t lock back after the last round. But I always end up dry firing it the one time after the last round. But it’s not that big a deal I just have to rack the slide to chamber the round to which only takes a half a second and I’m ready to go. I’d trust my life with this gun...For real.
Many don't know that you can get the 9mm barrel from the SD9VE and you can shoot 9mm out of your SD40VE using the same magazine....they sell the barrels on eBay....2 calibers in 1 pistol
@@Allen-kz5rl Sorry No, the opening in the slide for the barrel is smaller 9mm being a smaller projectile. this works for Glocks too .357 SIG and .40 S&W just a barrel swap. there are 9mm conversion barrels but you will need to use the 9mm magazine to feed the rounds correctly.
@@andrewmotter2140 Ruger has a PC carbine that will accept Glock 9mm magazines. All 9mm Glock double stack magazines will work once the (Included new in box) correct adapter is installed. So a Drum magazine should work, I am not sure about the reliability of 50 round magazines because of them being aftermarket. Glock factory magazines always work and the 33 round magazines are great in the Ruger PC Carbine or Glock pistol and are super reliable
I bought an SD9VE last year and fell in love with it. I recently put an Apex trigger and spring kit in it and WOW. I have put several thousand rounds through it and have had NO issues with failure to feed or eject and I have thrown some nasty cheap ammo through it testing it. My friend who is a Glock only nut shot it at the range the other week and I almost had to pry it out of his hands. $330.00 out the door + $75.00 trigger and spring kit + some messaging of my own and it can't be beat. 16 +1 rounds of stress relief on a budget.
It's bulky for conceal to me I'm skinny and it's summer 😆 it's kinda noticable, is what I'm getting at. But eitherway it's still good for close range protection I've shot mine from 15 yards and it's accurate the line up because of recoil is where time is an issue...but still not all out bad. the thing wasn't made for competition so it's worth EVERY CENT!
Zachery Hole I just upgraded from the sd9 to the SD40 and the power is crazy. Another plus from the sd9 is oddly the SD40 is more stable and you can get more upgrades. Keep in mind that M&P Shield mags are not interchangeable with the SD series. I currently own 2 factory 14rd Mags and a ProMag SD40 25rd mag. It eats any brand of S&W 40 cal ammo I put through. I would highly recommend.
I have the SDVE 40 and the Glock 22. I love both but have to admit I get better groupings with the Smith. Saying it is better than the Glock is a bold statement that I don't agree with. What I like about the SDVE 40 is I picked it up used for 260 out the door. I cant say that about a lot of higher quality pistol. You get a lot of gun for the price, and its a gun I would trust with my life and loved ones. The Glock 22 same thing I would trust it, but with the heavy price tag wouldn't be as appealing to budget gun buyers. I don't understand why everyone shit on the trigger pull of the Smith it is not bad at all. When the bullets start flying it is not going to make a difference breathing, sights, and capacity would be your best friends in a real firefight, and I know it has great sights, and great capacity. The only other Smith I own is the SW99. That is also an amazing pistol, but the trigger pull on the SW99 is a lot heavier.
+C Colt A replacement trigger spring kit is available -- that reduces pull by about 2 lbs. -- for $20...and/or a stiffer Guide Spring for about $30, that reduces muzzle flip... That would still give you a very 'budget-minded' pistol with excellent performance.
I bought this gun last week, it's my first purchase. Have yet to shoot it, all the feedback I'm getting is good. Very insightful video. I paid $370 total for it at Bass Pro Shop. By far the best price I came across with local shops being damn near sold out of everything

Ok, 9 years later. I bought one of these today and I am impressed with the build and feel of it. Gonna try it out this weekend. Haven't heard too many bad things about this pistol at all.
got one a few months ago been carrying every day since. The rifling has gotten a tad bit of rust but that was due to my neglect of it. Keep it clean and shoot it often. i've never had a malfunction.
I've had a S&W SD9VE for three years and I just bought another one. Both are stock - no sight or trigger upgrades. I prefer the trigger as-is for the reasons stated by 82 Luft. If you can operate a trigger correctly, it shoots just fine.
Have owned this pistol for about a year now, liked it a lot. Very accurate. Installed the Apex spring kit and trigger recently and now I really like it! Made for a big improvement with reduced trigger pull, quicker reset and a more comfortable trigger feel. Had a few FTFs using Perfecta ammo but have run Tulammo,Federal,Monarch and Winchester thru it with no problem.
I paid $280 for the 9&40 versions. I've found the .40 to be the more accurate of the two. I put the Apex springs in both and that helps a lot. They both have been super reliable. I would conservatively estimate that the 9mm has about 3000 rounds through it thus far and I can't remember any malfunctions. Best $300 pistol made.
😂😂of course the 40 is more accurate that's a fat round compared to a 9mm, I read something that was great advice the better you are with your 40 cals the better you ar with your 9mms
I’ve owned the SD9VE in 16+1 and I loved it. Had around 500-600 rounds through it before I sold. It’s a very well made and great shooting gun. Wanting to get either the SD40VE or another SD9VE for carry soon.
“My peice of polymer and metal is better than your peice of polymer and metal cause its 200$ more than you peice of polymer and metal” every glock person ever
The SD9VE and SD40VE are incredible values indeed. I currently have a Gen 4 Glock 17, Gen 3 Glock 32 and Gen 3 Glock 19. I also have an SD9Ve, and I have to say that after a few mods I shoot the SD slightly better than my Glocks. So far on my SD9 I have a metal guide rod/20# recoil spring combo, Apex spring kit, and Pachmayr grip sleeve. I have about 700rds through the gun in this guise and it has without fail been an excellent performer that shoots reliably and accurately every time. Rapid fire strings are very manageable and follow up shots are precise. I'm actually finding myself carrying this gun more and more. Next up will be a new set of sights, and that's going to about complete the package for me. I'm also considering the Apex replacement trigger that does away with the hinged M&P style trigger and makes it more like a slotted Glock trigger, but honestly so far I'm one of those weird people that doesn't mind the hinged trigger, and it doesn't negatively effect my performance. So far I have $400 into this gun with the purchase price and mods, and it serves me well at the range, for carry, and my weekly action pistol shoots, plus it's made in the USA. Can't get much better than that!
I have been looking for a holster for the SD40VE. I have a stream light TLR8A on it but haven't been able to find anything. Any suggestions or your current holster would be appreciated.
Great Video! Very informative. I picked up one of these just today along with a few boxes of .40 ammo, and I'm planning on taking her out for a test run on Wednesday. I'm pretty excited to see how she will do, this the first handgun that I actually own now! As a poor college kid I cant afford to shell out money on a more expensive gun- so, so far it looks like I made a good choice!
Thank you for helping me clean my S&W SD9 VE for the first time! I've had it for 5 years but just recently fired it for the second time ever and it kept jamming... The instructor told me i needed to clean it! After watching your video, she's smooth as butter now! Thank you!
I'm surprised he didn't rip the gun apart...This is the first gun I have ever heard him say ANYTHING good about. I bought used SD9 in the inflated arms market of today and paid $380. I think it is a great shooter and a great choice for a CCW.
I have a SD40VE, and I love it. Qualified for my carry license with it. Takes me ten minutes to clean versus half an hour for my M4. Just a fun gun to have!
I own this gun, and a glock. I would reach for my glock first every single time for 3 reasons. 1. I have had issues with the S&W mag FALLING OUT OF THE MAGWELL, my glock has never dropped a mag without me pressing the mag release. 2. The ammo rattles around the mag like coins in a tin can every move it makes. 3. recently I've found that the extractor fails to secure the breach. What I mean by that is it wont catch the rim of a cartridge properly, and this gun isnt even a year old.
Just want to clarify a couple things: this handgun is actually a 14 + 1 capacity and the trigger pull lightens up after the first round. The "no safety" feature is compensated for by making the first round a harder pull.
I already shot around 4,000 rounds on mine and never had an issue. I bought mine for $289.00 at a gun show in Miami. All I have to say is I love my SD9VE
I have to agree. I almost bought a Glock 19 and after testing them both, the S&W SD9 VE is a far better firearm. The weight in the front is a bit lighter and feels better overall in my hand. While it does look a tad "plasticy", it is a very well put together firearm. I couldn't be happier with it overall. Great firearm, fires nicely, low recoil, magazine pops out quickly and easily.
I have this as well as a glock 23, a g19 and a 1991 A1 colt. Honestly I carry this thing everywhere. It is fun to shoot and reliable. It feels better to me than the 23.. holds more rounds than my 1991a1 and the 40 is better at stopping something than the 9mm.
Adam Alford Glock should be a poor mans Glock. There is no reason they should cost $500 new with polymer sights, guide rods, and the minimal amount of moving and non-moving parts. They even recently changed the finish on the slides to a cheaper finish, but still cost $500+ new. Guns that offer much higher quality come in at a lower price point constantly.
Absolutely agree with shiny frame comment. I could not figure out what was bothering me about the look and you nailed it. Otherwise they did an amazing job on the aesthetics.
I have the 9mm variant. I often call it the "discount glock" because S&W got sued by glock over copyrights and lost and it's roughly 200 dollars cheaper than a glock, at least from prices i've seen. Went 300 rounds the first range trip, most fun birthday ever. Still waiting for an opportunity to take it back to the range.
Good review and I would agree with your assessment. I would like to see a complete side by side strip down of the slide and frame of the two weapons. I've found the Glock to be the easiest to completely strip and service out of all the hand guns I've owned. (Excluding revolvers)
I have a glock and one these. I like both equally as much. I honestly feel this a lot better gun than many give it credit for. It feels nice in your hand. The slide is so smooth. I do hate and have replaced the factory sights, but that's my only gripe.
I do armed work for a very high risk private security company. I carry the SD9VE. I have trained with a Glock as well. Glocks have failed to fire in several different scenarios. My SD9VE has never failed to fire.... not one time. The Glock grips do not fit my hand at all, and it seems like they put some real thought and effort into the SD series grips. It fits my hand better than any gun I've ever held before. Other guns can make me pull left or right of the target because of the grips. The SD9 is dead nuts on... even with the trigger being a little heavier than most people would prefer. I don't believe in altering guns, so I haven't done a trigger mod. I train to the gun. Glock was definitely a game changer, and SD series of guns are definitely a blatant attempt by Smith & Wesson to copy the Glock, with a few nice features added and a price you can't beat. It is funny.... had Glock added some of the additional features to their own guns... Glock fans would be jumping up and down with joy.... But they blast it when it shows up on a Smith & Wesson.
Honestly, I went into the shop yesterday hoping to buy a Hi Point as my first gun, but the gun store was out of them. The gentleman asked what I was looking for, I said a pistol in .40 (I have my reasons) that is under 350 bucks, shoots straight and is reliable. This limited my choices to one of two things, this gun, or the road (or going over my budget, and I was not going to do that). So now I am a proud owner of an SD40VE, having done no research on it beforehand, and now I am doing research on it, I am liking what I see.
I had two of these at separate moments in my life. I like this s&w alot unfortunately had to pawn them off. Soon I'm going to get another for the third time
Heh, I remember when the first S&W 'Sigma' pistols came out, which was the first generation of Smith & Wesson polymer framed guns. Anyway, the running joke at the time was that the name 'Sigma' actually stood for "Smith's Idea, Glock Made Already'. They were literally a copy of a Glock. They were so dimensionally identical that one could actually swap the assembled slides between guns, and they would function just fine. Glock sued S&W for being too similar, and that suit was settled out of court with S&W agreeing to make a few changes to avoid any infringement. Anyway, the Sigma series has evolved into this SDV design, so I think it's interesting that TYM is comparing it to the Glock. It basically IS a Glock, just one whose evolution diverged from its origin over 20 years ago. :D
+josh colby Hah, that's right, I remember that now! :D I don't remember it being any specific amount, at least I don't remember it being publicly announced, but yeah, that's right, the settlement was that Glock gets a royalty, basically, from every sale. :)
there were a few mentions online of the royalties a few years back. blocks gotta have done something right if the almighty smith and wesson needed to rip them off. smith and wesson caved to gun control also till the backlash from the pro gun side forced them to withdrawal from the anti gunner nonsense
I had a sigma when they first came out and I ended up giving it to my mother and the gun still runs today 15 years later. I changed a a couple springs to Glock springs to have a better trigger but that was all I did for it and I still borrow it from time to time just to shoot it.
I have the SD9 VE and I too had a bit of a time with the take down spring. One evening I took it apart and while watching a couple of TV shows I took a wooden dowel and depressed the spring for the take down over and over again. By exercising that one thing I have made the gun easier to take down. It is still tough but not as hard as it was. I probably depressed that spring a few thousand times. I have put about a thousand rounds down range. The only issue that I had with the pistol was that the rear sight was slightly out of alignment. Once aligned it became very accurate. No feed or ejection problems. I fired this thing about 400 times the first time I took it to the range. It did get a little warm but it was not unmanageable, and not warm at the rear grip on the slide. It is now my edc. No complaints on the trigger pull, but I've never been exposed to a pistol that had what is supposed to have a really good trigger.
I have had this gun for 8 months as a service gun for my security job. The magazines rattle when fully loaded, the polymer feels cheap. I don't like the hinge style of the trigger. I will definitely be selling mine and upgrade to a Glock.
Yankee Marshal I just purchased one today. The gun dealer first put the glock in front of me. My buddy told me the sights on the glock are a big downside and the SW was almost 100 dollars less. Think I made a good purchase
Shellz Gang so what you mean is he could've bought night sights on top of paying 100 bucks more for a gun that functions similar to the one he he got for cheaper??
I own that weapon in 9mm. I have a custom trigger, mirror polished internals and 20 Round Extended Clip. I have shot alot of things with that pistol... Just nothing I was aiming at. It rattles like a maraca. The barrel moves around too much to hit anything, in particular
I love my sd9ve no issues with anything I’ve fed it.....stock was great but with the apex spring kit and a 20lb stainless guide rod it works even better for me
The perfect defensive pistol when on a tight budget. So much like a glock clone that glock sued Smith and Wesson because of it. Despite its flaws, this gun just plain WORKS.
Right... Cause look up the $50.00 up grade for Sd9Ve it's a guy got a video on RUclips and for $50.00 worth of ordered parts to replace on the Sd9 it made it better than a Glock for sure even though without up grades I still think it's better than glock
I've been fascinated by these guns for years. I currently own multiple M&P variants, so needless to say I'm a S&W fan... Having said that I've also owned multiple Glocks (notice past tense), and I've not been impressed at all. I think I'm going to finally get one of these to see for myself!
I know this video is 7 years old, but I wanted to comment. I'm sick and tired of all these "experts" (mostly Glock fanboys) dismissing the SD9 and SD40 as just "budget guns." I'm no expert either, but I've been shooting since I was 12 years old and owned countless firearms. I'm 60 now, so I have a little experience with guns. NOT an expert, but fairly experienced. I just can't figure out why the SD9/SD40 gets dismissed so quickly. So it doesn't cost $500 like a damn Glock. I've watched many, many RUclips videos from all these experts, saying "yeah well, the SD40 is okay, but it's no Glock. It's okay for a budget gun". But I have YET to hear one single valid reason for this. They always bitch and whine about the trigger. So what if the SD has a heavier trigger?? it's a friggin' self defense gun, not a competition gun!! Besides, for 20 bucks, you can vastly improve the trigger with a simple trigger spring kit from Apex or M Carbo. Other than that, the Glock fanboys cannot justify the higher cost for their Glock. Paying more just so you can say you have a Glock doesn't make it a better quality product.
Reliability is the main reason amongst a few others. My sd9ve has had 7 malfunctions in 1,000 rounds fired. My Glock 19 is over 10k rounds now WITHOUT A SINGLE MALFUNCTION. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a terrible gun but I wouldn’t trust my life with it and it’s not on Glocks level. Get upset all you want because I’m assuming you don’t own a Glock but I’m just speaking the truth.
@@jstud999 yeah well, I never, ever had one single malfunction with my SD40. Never once. Yes I did eventually switch to a Shield 9mm because of the size and weight, not because of any issue with the SD-40. you are correct, I don't own a Glock, because I see no valid reason to spend $150 to $200 more just to say I have a fucking Glock. as usual for a clock owner, you have given me no valid reason why it is better. My Smith & Wesson SD40 was a well-built, quality product that never failed
Got one for $300 at academy and came with a $40 store giftcard (used for ammo) a SW coffee tumbler, and ballcap. Gonna get familiar with it this weekend at the range.
Off the subject. Why the band aid on the thumb? Wife bite? Kitchen knife? or pistol malfunction?
If you're being truthful, and not being an Internet warrior, thank you so much for your service. I have all the respect in the world for veterans!
I was 3rd ID. and I agree with you about the trigger pull weight. But this thing is junk. I am no fan of Glock. I am not going down the Ford / Chevy road. I'm simply calling a spade a spade. S&W is more closely related to a HiPoint.
lmfao nothing like a hi point lol .. great gun at a great price buy one and be happy
hooah
I picked this gun up yesterday. I absolutely love the feel and performance, and for the price you can't go wrong.
Loooool! Your handle is manly, dude.
If you have the S&W, or the Glock, for protection in your home, either will work the same, I have both, and like Both.
Right? Both gets the job done.. just preference.
Scott C I will be getting the glock next month just purchased this one
.40 is egregiously underrated especially in a full frame
just got the .40 and have to completely agree. Helps out when ammo is so hard to find
In my opinion the SW/SD series are hands down one of the best values EVER to be had in a handgun
how dare you save $210
David Johnston quality comment.
210 Vallecon
I got them both a year and a half with the Smith rebates and my store sales, and got the SD9 and SD40 each for $220 after rebate.
Great gun
@CFSVA14 None No, it is not.
It is every bit as reliable as a Glock with better build quality.
I own dozens of pistols, and consider myself a professional with firearms (years of military and other armed experience).
Money does not equal quality in firearms.
I like that it is made in the good old United States of America!! Keeping fellow citizens at work and making a good wage. God Bless America!!
Lmao
@@genericsername Dude I'm actually embarrassed for you. You obviously ( based on your channel and video game playing). Have no idea about working and how important it is to buy American made products. Tell your mother to buy American.
I love my S&W 40. I've been carrying it for over 5 years and my only real complaint is with the cheap factory sights. I replaced them with some Trujicon glo sights a few years ago and it's a remarkably accurate firearm, I LOVE it!!
Thank you sir for piece of mind.... I just bought this gun, and made me feel like my money was well spent
Jesus, all you glock fanboys need to chill. Don't be mad at the man because he acknowledged the fact that glocks are overpriced. Sure they're really nice guns, but they aren't worth 500+$ in my opinion.
True
I just bought the Sigma series, these guns are awesome for the price, I paid 269$ after tax with a box of 40s&w to go with it.
That is why most police departments have switched back to the 9 mm.
calvin sanders Glock 40? Lol, I didn't even know the G40's were even out yet. But yes, law enforcement uses 9mm
I told him "Glocks are good, but I don't like the way they fit in my hand and they don't point naturally for me at all." He comes back with "I was the same way at first, but now I compete regularly and this gun" (points to his waist) "has had 80,000 rounds through it with NOT ONE FAILURE WHATSOEVER."
Immediately my brain thought "I'm calling shenanigans on this guy and getting out of here." I thanked him and left with a bad taste in my mouth. Everyone else at the range was incredibly polite and welcoming, but that guy just kinda ruined it for me. From now on I'm just going to tell any gun shop employees I talk to right up front, "Rule 1, don't recommend Glock. They don't fit my hand and I'm not going to buy one."
I don't have anything against Glocks, but I DO hate the tunnel vision some Glock owners develop. That's why I like TYM. He owns and carries Glocks, but he doesn't claim they were built by Jesus Christ himself.
I kind of agree.
I think they're amazing guns. But that don't mean they're for every single shooter.
I carry a Glock and two Glock clones (S&W40 and Diamondback 380)
I do love Glocks.
Respect good response
Because Jesus carries an h&k
I just got my SD9VE yesterday, I am honestly impressed with the quality of this pistol, at $275 new I am very happy, Thanks for this video!! Helped with my decision.
I owe this poor mans glock, but it works just as good. Plus its an American brand.
Glocks should be poor-men's Glocks, but ol' Gaston marked up the price by $300 for the civvie market.
Exactly. For as close as the S&W SD is to the Glock, I'd take the S&W any day for no other reason than that it IS American made. I own the SD9VE and I love it.
+Roy Payne my first gun was a sw40Ve. for the price it was great! can't go wrong with a sd or sw.
I thought S&W outsource to other countries? Didn't they also sign the anti-Second amendment bigotry agreement with the Clinton regime. Only Ruger is 100% American
The company was British owned at the time . It no longer is.

Vn Mc your absolutely right. Forest Gump mode.

Not a glock fan but all new gen 4s come with the beaver tail back straps and they fixed a lot of the problems
Or you could just stop limp wristing and blaming it on the firearm. Poor form
Glockadile😂😂😂
@@Derek-1145 yea i popped mine on. feels great !
Why
Because of the poundage.
My everyday carry is a SD9VE with a stainless guide rod, mag extension, spring and trigger upgrade and night sights. I LOVE THIS GUN
@Mitchell Nova Cain Arms SD9VE Mag Extension +5
Mark Nuncio so is it a 15rd mag now or a 21 round mag?

@Rick Slade Facts 💯
Rick Slade Glock is way better then a fucking wack ass Walther PPQ , Glock is superior reliable accurate light weight affordable great grip texture list goes on and on Glock wins all the time
Rick Slade okay let’s see shut the fuck up , your the real fucking idiot on everything , take your little pistol to the trash can
I’d be willing to bet your just one of those people who hate anything that’s popular.

I use my SDVE40 to carry all the time. I love it at the range, I love it on my side. It is a great gun for the money, absolutely agree 100%.
How is it compared to say a Glock 19 size wise thinking about picking one up but don't want a dudy sized gun ?
Same size in every way to the Glock 19
I also bought the SD9VE, I love, lifetime warranty too. Smith & Wesson for life!
I feel you forgot to mention the most important factor....this gun looks about 50 times better than a Glock.
Hell nah 😂😂

Its funny how a 40 starts to feel like a 9mm after a while. Then you go back to the 9mm and you feel like your shooting a 22lr.
Agree 100%.
I just picked up the SD9 VE for $289! Gonna go test her out this morning. I'm excited.
It's been fantastic. Not a single issue after 600 rounds.
U won’t be disappointed. Think about getting the apex trigger upgrade for $20
$279 with a light
I love my sd9ve. I have shot about 5500 rounds with it and i haven't had one malfunction. I did the apex spring kit and i love the trigger.

Many don't know that you can get the 9mm barrel from the SD9VE and you can shoot 9mm out of your SD40VE using the same magazine....they sell the barrels on eBay....2 calibers in 1 pistol
Good to know, thanks!
Does it work the other way too?
@@Allen-kz5rl Sorry No, the opening in the slide for the barrel is smaller 9mm being a smaller projectile. this works for Glocks too .357 SIG and .40 S&W just a barrel swap. there are 9mm conversion barrels but you will need to use the 9mm magazine to feed the rounds correctly.
@@JettBlast have you ever seen anything other than a promag go in a sd40ve? Or maybe the glock s&w 40 50rd drum can fit?
@@andrewmotter2140 Ruger has a PC carbine that will accept Glock 9mm magazines. All 9mm Glock double stack magazines will work once the (Included new in box) correct adapter is installed. So a Drum magazine should work, I am not sure about the reliability of 50 round magazines because of them being aftermarket. Glock factory magazines always work and the 33 round magazines are great in the Ruger PC Carbine or Glock pistol and are super reliable
$319? I'm in California and this one costs $410! Glocks cost $600! And we can only buy Gen 3 guns. Damn California!

this was my first handgun, after changing the sights and putting in the apex trigger and spring kit it is still one of my favorite pistols
Any suggest where to find?
@Timeless Tae the 40 cal version is a bit harder to find, my local gun store had only 1, and definitely grabbed it lol
This my new favorite gun, its my conceal and carry gun also.
I carry one to and love it
It's bulky for conceal to me I'm skinny and it's summer 😆 it's kinda noticable, is what I'm getting at. But eitherway it's still good for close range protection I've shot mine from 15 yards and it's accurate the line up because of recoil is where time is an issue...but still not all out bad. the thing wasn't made for competition so it's worth EVERY CENT!
Its my trap gun i love it too🚦
@BMO I have the sd9ve for home defense to and my edc is ruger ec9s.
Great gun for the money i own the 9mm version im highly considering getting the 40 s&w version also best gun for $300 i ever bought
I support that I just got one and I love it ten thumps up for you man.. GO S&W
I've had my sd40ve for a few years and it's never let me down. Easy to clean, easy to work on and hit what you point it at.

I just bought the full size Security 9 by Ruger, love it. I used to have the S&W SD9VE good gun as well priced about the same.
I just bought the sd9ve, and i couldn't be more satisfied. I absolutely love the thing. I'll be getting the 40 soon.
So she can run the steel no problem?
I paid $280 for the 9&40 versions. I've found the .40 to be the more accurate of the two. I put the Apex springs in both and that helps a lot. They both have been super reliable. I would conservatively estimate that the 9mm has about 3000 rounds through it thus far and I can't remember any malfunctions. Best $300 pistol made.
😂😂of course the 40 is more accurate that's a fat round compared to a 9mm, I read something that was great advice the better you are with your 40 cals the better you ar with your 9mms

Replacement sights would do the glock justice as well, so still cheaper? :o
Joe Doole- Can you please give specific upgrades needed for the SD9VE?
I have been looking for a holster for the SD40VE. I have a stream light TLR8A on it but haven't been able to find anything. Any suggestions or your current holster would be appreciated.

I'm surprised he didn't rip the gun apart...This is the first gun I have ever heard him say ANYTHING good about. I bought used SD9 in the inflated arms market of today and paid $380. I think it is a great shooter and a great choice for a CCW.
You could have bought it new for that price and got the lifetime warranty.
My glock 19 was stolen and I've been looking for a used one cheap enough for me to buy. just bought a new sd9 online for 260. pretty darn excited.
Where did you buy it please
@@stanleyl1293 PSA. Currently in stock for 4 hundo
Niceee got this in 9mm it works great was skeptical about the $300ish price range glad to see a great review puts my mind at ease
I noticed the same thing with my magazines , WTF !
Just got this one today can't wait to try it out
Love mine! Best 300 I have spent on a gun. Great job S&W
I love people who brag about buying brand new guns 100$+ of what they actually cost to look cool, this gun is 399$ new.
@@tysonharrison2566 you did see I posted this comment 3 years ago right ? Get up to speed before you talk shit bright boy
That’s crazy you said that cause I bought the G17 and said the same thing I think the SDVe is better it just feels better.
@@coachrome5286 nothing wrong with a Glock, the ergonomics just suck and could never get used to them. And then Smith comes out with the SD.
I know this video is older but I was looking at this gun today. Thanks for review.
I bought the SD9VE version
I just bought it today think I over payed though 320
i like the firearm so much i bought 2.from sportsman guide at 257.00 each..a great deal
really tempted to pick this gun up.
I've had Glock certified people give a certain look when I mention I have an SD9VE, it's not a happy look. More like a "fuck you" look, lol
Thats cause they know its a poor mans glock and it works.
And thats why i will never own a glock ! but I'm a Springfield fanboy so what do i know !
You cant go wrong with smith and Wesson. I own many of there revolvers and auto's and there're great guns!
Should have just got the 40 cal if you you were buying this gun
Eh I'm fine with the 9
Good review and I would agree with your assessment. I would like to see a complete side by side strip down of the slide and frame of the two weapons. I've found the Glock to be the easiest to completely strip and service out of all the hand guns I've owned. (Excluding revolvers)
i totally agree with everything you said about this gun,,very good review-thx
I have a glock and one these. I like both equally as much. I honestly feel this a lot better gun than many give it credit for. It feels nice in your hand. The slide is so smooth. I do hate and have replaced the factory sights, but that's my only gripe.
I don't like glock, :c
There's something about the way it fits in my hand that doesn't give me that same comfort-ergonomic feel,
I do armed work for a very high risk private security company.
Scott Robinson I love it

We need a SD45VE 15RD DOUBLE STACK......ASAP !!!
NBS I thought I was the only person thinking of that
For the same price-$
I been waiting for a 45 version. Only 45 I’ve seen with 15 rounds is the fnx 45

Soon I'm going to get another for the third time
I had this gun before. Loved it. Got a m&p 40. Also a great gun.
Just picked up the sd40 for 289.00+tax and put 50 cheap monarch hollows through it with no problem.
-where have you been all my life
Heh, I remember when the first S&W 'Sigma' pistols came out, which was the first generation of Smith & Wesson polymer framed guns. :D
+David Buelow 10$ from every sd ve sale goes to glock.
Think I made a good purchase
yes u did
No coulda bought night sights
Shellz Gang so what you mean is he could've bought night sights on top of paying 100 bucks more for a gun that functions similar to the one he he got for cheaper??
20BulletProof10 in my experience the s&w was a jammer
Shellz Gang idk mine is solid haven't had a problem
Put a Glock trigger on it boom....it’s a Glock 😂💯
I got it back in June. The 9mm. 249.99 at academy down here in Houston, TX. I FREAKING LOVE IT!!!
This guy made me love my gun more was thinking getting glock but im good
Damn , glock fanboys get so butt hurt so quickly.
Ima GlockBoy but i tote a SW40 😈
