I’ve loved Tosca since I was very young. It was my introduction to opera. It is Te Deum, that to this day makes my hairs stand and causes tears. Puccini will always be the composer that changed my life.
Me too. It's Puccini's most perfect work. I have seen countless productions. I can never get enough. You might also check out the recording of this Te Deum scene with Bryn Terfel made at the Royal Opera House in 2011. He has a very different approach to Raimondi.
Puccini was a genius composer. Those cannons firing are terrifying and significant in that they underscore the violence of Scarpia. The paradox of Scarpia setting a trap for Tosca yet lusting after her, make him clearly a psychopathic villain. Puccini establishes the opposition good and evil by having the te deum sung while Scarpia admits his lust and confessing that Tosca makes him forget God. This climax allows the audience to fully understand corruption, power and sin. A certain Italian politician comes to mind.

I think If I could wish myself anywhere in the world I would wish myself to Italy and one of the things I would do there, is attend an opera at the Arena. Incredibly staged, beautiful costumes! I'll never have the money to visit Italy, this lifetime, but my heart will always belong, there!
Incredible production. And Scarpia as menacing as he must be. Beautifully sung and look at his face. All of his emotions play across it. Bravo Maestri.
I saw Ambrogio sing Scarpia in a concert Tosca with Philadelphia Orchestra under Yannick last year! .....I was in 2nd row on the aisle.....was mesmerizing! Ambrogio was large, imposing, and odious....in all the right ways! 😎😎😎
The scene made me so much more curious about the world of opera. This opera is such a master class, for me, in what makes a truly compelling story! And this opera opened the door to even more. This staging of the Act I finale is great!!
marvelous scene. Calvadossa, the tenor, has two great arias, but he's A pawn in the war between Scarpia and Tosca and of course they are all dead at the end. After Tosca kills Scarpia, she says "avante te, tremava tutta Roma" (before you all of Rome trembled).
It would be educational if those that downvoted this could explain why. I'm not an opera expert but I find this and most other interpretations very powerful. I do prefer the instrumental version though... pardon my ignorance.
It's one of my favourite aria (musically at least), beacause it's very "evil" I guess. The music is heavenly, organs are related to the church, but the character singing is an evil old man lusting over a young woman he couldn't have willingly.

I wonder how an entire "Te Deum" written by Puccini would've sounded like.

Quantum of Solace was a great movie; and this is a great opera. This scene was used as a backdrop for the most pivotal scene.

I have seen it at Staatsoper Berlin. It was amazing!!!!! Incredible being in there!
Maybe it's heresy to say this but the 'without words' version of this is incredible too.

Not bad for a modern performance
he is wearing some HEELS
Yeah, Aida wouldn't have been written yet in these times???
14 people are Scarpia XD
Scarpia è il più bel “cattivo” della lirica... aggiunge a Tosca dei toni musicali non comuni!

It's all symbolism
one of the best te deum I ever heard so powerful, so beautiful! he is a bit fat but just listen to him and you will fall in love with Scarpia
That fat is part and parcel of his delivery and expressive output
Cornell MacNeil is better, so are Guelfi and Gobbi, but this isn’t bad for a modern performance
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the inspiration of "Hellfire" by Disney in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".
