Oggi si preferiscono i maneskin o come so chiamano.
There is/was no one better than Luciano when he was young. Not even the magnificent Mirella Freni. These two are so fabulous (together and on their own). So wonderful to listen to, but so painful to listen to such magnificent talent that has been lost.
Interesting you say "when he was young". This is one of the first songs I heard when he was younger. I was never a great fan of his. Oh, technically, he was the best, no one could touch him, but "heart" I never heard from him. I guess I was spoiled by Giuseppe diStefano😃
Educated and culturally astute audience who know this opera. They have the respect and awareness to wait till the final note before expressing their appreciation of a magnificent performance.
I attended the season finale concert for the Orange County Philharmonic Society just a few months ago, and it featured as the final piece a performance of Tchaikovsky’s magisterial 5th Symphony! You know the rest, the breath the orchestra takes in the 4th movement before launching into the coda? The audience started to clap thinking it was over. I mean, goodness gracious🤦🏻♂️ It’s Tchaikovsky! How do you not know Tchaikovsky??? I was already pissed off that they were clapping in between movements (I know it was fashionable in Beethoven’s time to do this, but I prefer silence as is done today), but when they did this, it just destroyed the vibe for me🤦🏻♂️
@@Tennisisreallyfun I feel your pain. We happy few who appreciate the “finer” things in life need to live among the masses of musically/culturally illiterate that wouldn’t know the difference between a symphony and a sonata or a coda from a cadenza. But then again, I couldn’t name a Taylor Swift song, so whatever rattles your can.
Sensational performance...and so few others. they sang it in key. That was a true high C they ended the duet with, as written, and a brilliant high C at that.
"high C [...] as written". Not in my score, which is the piano+vocal score: there's no copyright date, but I must have bought it in the 1970s. It was published by Ricordi. I'd be delighted to learn where you got your information: not all publishers of music got it right. In the Ricordi, the soprano and tenor get to (optionally) finish at her A and his F. The main line has Rodolfo dropping to E and Mimi rising to C. Both pp perdendosi. No willy-waving "bang it out loud" C for the tenor or, indeed, for the soprano. Also in that score, the tenor's C in Che gelida manina is optional and the (perhaps) original makes a better melody. Not so many bragging rights for the tenor, maybe. Perhaps Puccini was having trouble finding tenors with the right tessitura to sing the high notes. It is, however, odd that the high versions are the optional ones and not the main lines. I might be entirely misinterpreting the score and would be delighted to be put straight on it.
@@davidgould9431 I can't comment on the specific details you quote, but I do know that Puccini suffers badly, worse than most composers, from unauthorised modifications to his music. I am reasonably certain that Ricordi was the original publisher of all his operas, so trusting their score is a reasonably safe bet. Late in his career Alexander Gibson conducted a series of Puccini operas with Scottish Opera. He insisted that all markings be removed from the orchestral parts before he started rehearsal, and the players were startled and thrilled at how much better the composer's version of the score sounded. I have heard similar stories from the Royal Opera House.
Two of the very best pupils of the great Ettore Campogalliani, 1903-1992. With them bel canto has survived into our time. A lovely document of fabulous singing.
The best performance of these arias in the last half of the 20th Century. The range of dynamics is unbelievable. They were made for this. Extremely gorgeous.
Yes Pavarotti is young and so dashing, but Freni is gorgeous and they both sing so incredibly! This is the first opera I heard in person as a 16 year old, although I had been listening with my father to the Saturday Afternoon performances from the Met since I was a child. I still am emotionally moved by the passion and the perfection of Puccini's masterpiece, as well as this performance which is as close as I feel we will ever get to heaven, until that day comes. And they are so sweet together!
I’ve never seen Pavarotti so young and so handsome. I was fortunate to see him in person at Madison Square Garden and at the Garden States Art Center (as it was called then) in the seventies. Fantastic performer. 😮 All the Italians from New Jersey were there in full force. Puccini was my first introduction to Opera when I was six. I have had a long-standing love affair with opera since then. Now today with the Metropolitan simulcasts and opera on demand opera is affordable for all.
There were brother and sister singing together since kids, they have been changed the sort of the voice and Opera. Both borned in Modena in 1935. Absolutely beautiful
Thanks so much for posting this rare gem from 1965, Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti in such great form, brilliant orchestral sound too under the baton of Nello Santi. I think this is the earliest Pavarotti clip I have ever seen. He was 29 at this point, so handsome. Mirella Freni is amazing. Am I right in thinking that the two grew up together in Modena ? Or am I thinking of someone else ? This is stellar singing. What a time to be alive for the audiences back then, when the importance of this great music was truly understood. I so wish I had heard these two live. Pavarotti is my all time favourite tenor, a voice that is as warm as Italian sunshine on a field of sunflowers. I think Mirella Freni passed away just recently in 2023. Magical music.
Always loved this recording. Pavarotti and Freni together, they had true vocal chemistry, the double High C at the end rings so perfectly, though that isn’t even the highlight for me. Freni’s Mimi is my favorite overall interpretation. Her perfect support of even the most quiet moments is unmatched. ❤💙
What an absolute treat...in passing I would comment on the resemblance between looks of pavarotti at this age with Scottie the engineer on the starship Enterprise.

Simply exquisite.
And Pavarotti’s final note seemed almost effortless. He looks so young.
What a treasure this clip is. Thank you for sharing it. ❤️

Pavarotti's technique was exceptionally good - something which few critics ever commented on.

Sadly gone but their soul, their voice lives on.
Possibly the best Mimi i have heard. I will definitely listen to her more.
He was handsome back then too. But voice, his voice is so natural, powerful.
Brings tears to my eyes! Two of the best in these roles.

Fabuleux, merci!
Pavarotti was just 29 years old ! The quality of recordings at that time hardly makes justice to his perfect voice at this time.
I love them both!
Thank you for reminding me of the wonderful Mirella Freni. Such an exquisite voice.
As a lowly hotel employee I met Mirella Freni many times. She was a truly modest and charming lady (and adored her grandchildren).
Agreed. This takes me back decades.
Too much soprano vibrato for me but Pavarotti was perfection
