    In this step-by-step video tutorial you will learn how to crochet this classic fisherman style hat using the short row technique. Don't worry if you have never made a hat using short rows it is really easy and I will walk you through all of the steps.
    Crocheting short rows is my favorite technique for making hats. This hat is worked in rows using the most basic crochet stitch - the single crochet worked in the back loop only (BLO). If you can do a single crochet stitch then you can make this hat!.
    I love using short rows to create hats because there is not gathering at the top so you end up with a perfectly fitted hat.
    Hook: 5:00 mm
    Gauge: 19 stitches and 22 rows = 4 inches
    Yarn: Katia Merino Aran

    My neighbor taught me how to make this short-row cap when I first learned crochet, some 40 years ago. Small difference on ours. On the return row of the short rows, I believe we:
    turn,
    skipped the first stitch,
    Slst into the next stitch,
    Sc-blo into the remaining stitches in the row, ch1, turn
    Either way, it is a classic style with just the right amount technique to keep you from getting bored with single crochet, lol. I'm very glad to see the technique being passed on.
    Thanks for the video! ((brought back so many good memories for me ))

      Wow that is interesting to hear. This was the first pattern I created using short rows so funny to hear that the technique has been around for a while. There are only so many stitches and combinations so not surprising that patterns I come up with have variations that have been around for a while. My mom always said what is old will be new again. Thanks for watching!

      What I don't understand is where you start the next 2nd row . Do you begin on the short row.

    • @woodcampercrochetcrafts
      @woodcampercrochetcrafts  8 месяцев назад

      You begin after you finish row 17. Once you finish row 17 you have 50 stitches in your row which is the same number you started with. Row 17 ends at the bottom of the toque. Once you finish row 17 you repeat row 2-17. When you start the second section (starting with row 2) there are no short rows yet and you are starting at the bottom of the toque. Hope this helps.

    I wanted to check in and make sure I’m crocheting this hat correctly. In your video it doesn’t seem like there is a hole in the top of the hat at the end. My hats have been having holes at the top which I then have to weave closed. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thank you for this lovely video🙏

    • @woodcampercrochetcrafts
      @woodcampercrochetcrafts  Год назад +1

      This pattern is worked flat so there is no hole at the top. Once you are done the last row is joined to the original chain with a slip stitch. There is no hole so you do not have to weave anything closed. You only get the hole when you crochet a hat from the bottom up. When you crochet a hat flat or top down there isn't a hole. Sounds like you are doing it right! Thanks for watching.

    Great video ! Does the pattern change at all if I want to use hdc or dc instead of a blo sc rib?

    • @woodcampercrochetcrafts
      @woodcampercrochetcrafts  2 года назад +1

      I have made short row hats before with other stitches but not the hdc or dc. You can do short row hats with any stitch but it will change the pattern. The hdc or dc will make the hat wider so you will probably need fewer "panels". This pattern works well with the sc (blo) because that stitch makes the hat really stretchy, it is the same technique I use for hat bands. Thanks for the question and watching the video!

    • @woodcampercrochetcrafts
      @woodcampercrochetcrafts  6 месяцев назад

      Sorry I did not demonstrate how to measure the toque. If you have the person with you I suggest (before you seem it together) holding it around their head to determine the correct size. This is the easiest method as it accounts for the stretch in the hat. If they are not with you get them to measure the circumference of their head and then measure the hat. You will want to make take off about 1 inch from the measurement to account for stretch. Hope this helps.
