I fell upon this story 55 years ago in grade school, agog with the images and relentless pace, never forgotten. Now as senior physician, I have now witnessed COVID march through two of my senior communities, taking 22 lives and leaving many more in despair. Finding this superbly read story online here, I will share it sparingly with survivors and colleagues.
And to think this story is (more than likely as we don't know for sure) an allegory for the futility of fighting against a person's mortality. And that Poe's wife at the time was suffering from tuberculosis and that he was coming to terms with her imminent death. This story goes so hard I love it.
i remember this image in a book. trying to remember another image in that book, telling this story. had Death, wearing a big skull mask over the entire "head" & wearing white robe
I stumbled on this in the 48 Laws of Power. Eerie time to become aware of this story. I feel like the US is the abbey. We thought we were indestructible and self-sufficient. I remember the terror of the first year, before we had vaccines. What a time to be alive.
