Curator's Crypt - Episode 90: Poe's Biggest Fan
I'm inclined to believe not likely; but maybe he had an ounce of sympathy and decided to since others were depending on Poe.
I am also inclined to think that Ellis did not help him, but I will have to search the Ellis and Allan company records to be certain. Thanks for watching.
Probably Mr. Ellis knows the hard times between Edgar and Mr. Allan: 'cause of this, Mr. Ellis chose to avoid the request Edgar sent him, not because "the boy has to find his own path by he's own hands" - I truly hope he was not so despicable - but because paying the credit means going on Edgar' side, against Allan , an old friend and respectable "high society" member. Poe was just the foster child and his misbehaving was never accepted or understood by others: Mr. Allan by first. Thank you so much for this video 🖤
Thanks for the comment. I agree with you that Charles Ellis might have shared some of Allan's resentment for Poe. In his accounts, Charles's son Thomas Ellis seems to have sided with Allan on some points.
This channel should have way way more subs
Thanks for the comment. We will have to start asking people to like, share, and subscribe, like they do on other channels.
It's my sad guess that the credit was not given to him ;-(
Were I to cast an actor in the role of Edgar A. Poe, I might select between two choices: George Blagden (Versailles), and Tom Felton (The Forgotten Battle). The former looks very much like Poe in the McDougall portrait; the latter has a similar physiognomy. Both are about the same height, have blue-grey eyes, and are in their thirties.
Loved this segment Chris! Always interesting to hear about Poe's friends and family relationships. I feel like there was so much more to his personality than most people know.
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Really wonderful to hear about this other side of Edgar ;-)
Thanks for watching.
excellent presentation ...thanks , learned a lot about this very intriguing artist.
The photograph on glass looks like a fake.
Thanks for the feedback. The hyalotype certainly looks different now that it is back from the conservator. She replaced the mirror backing with a piece of white mat board. This makes the image more readable, but it also makes it look a bit brighter and newer (maybe a little too bright and new). That might be what you are responding to.
Awesome to see these things properly conserved and cared for. Thank you!
Thanks for the comment. We are looking forward to putting them back on display for everyone to see.
I agree with the decisions of both conservators in their preserving these historic pieces. I especially am grateful to the one who restored the portrait and removed the document from the back to preserve it. I feel her excitement about possibly finding another treasure, and although she found nothing, we would never know if she had not looked. Thanks once again.
Thanks for the comment. We were all hoping to find something on the back of that painting, but we were not sad not to see anything. The front of the picture is good enough without the need for an extra image.
So great to see the close up comparisons of the before and after conservation! Brilliant work by the conservator on the photo on glass and the painting! These are priceless. I prefer the "happy Poe " by the way. Another enjoyable Curator's Crypt, thank you!!👏👏 And Happy Birthday to Edgar 🎉😺
Thanks for watching. I am glad that you appreciate all the painstaking work the conservator put into restoring those pictures.
Poor Edgar--always looking for love in all the wrong places ;-( I love the painting and the conservator did a wonderful job--happy birthday to Edgar Kitty ;-)
Thanks for watching.
Anyone from Air University??
This made my day!!!❤
i watching this for a reading competition 😢 im so shyyy
I just want to quit as a representative, but my teacher doesn't agree
Nice ! I imagine him polka dancing now. If you have details about his marriage, I’d appreciate very much. Thanks.
Thanks for watching. We will have to make a video about Poe's marriage.
We would appreciate a tiny paper tissue from Edgar also 🖤 He was very gentle and kind - many people said this about him - and he was very pleasant to talk with (ladies said that 😏) Sadly, the events with his late fiancee were very complicated and distorted by "family affairs". Probably it was a difficult time Edgar went through but, in our opinion, his personality was not altered by it, not enough to change his kindness and affability. Thank you so much for this "gift" 🙏
Thanks for the comment. I do think that Edgar and Elmira could have been happy if they could have moved away from her brothers and daughter.
How does someone do what you do? Obviously go to college, but what road of study did you do?
Some museum people major in history or art history, but others major in museum studies. It depends on what kind of museum you would like to work at, so start thinking about what kinds of museums appeal most to you. While you are in college, you should also try out some internships or start volunteering at different museums to prepare you for finding a job after graduation. If there is a museum association in your area, you can also get involved with it and take their workshops and classes. In Virginia, we have the Virginia Association of Museums, but the American Association of State and Local History is a national organization that offers a lot of online classes on archives and collections. Be sure to always keep learning. When working in a small museum like the Poe Museum, it helps to accumulate a lot of different skills because you might be called to help out with educational programs, events, gardening, cleaning the cat's litter box, or other things, as the need arises. I started out in an art museum before coming here. When I got to the Poe Museum, I began by performing conservation work on artifacts before moving on to curating the exhibits.

I'm watching because I f-ing love this poem
Ill always love this poem
It seems as though it just wasn't meant to be, for Poe and Elmira Shelton to be together. In one hand, I can understand why her daughter didn't want Poe as a stepfather. But Elmira did love him after all. Thank you Chris, great video!
Thanks for the comment. I agree. Poe and Elmira were not meant to be. One can only wonder what might have happened (and what he would have written) if they had finally gotten together.
skibidi toilet
honestly i see where Anne Elizabeth is coming from
Thank you for taking your time and teaching us more about this intriguing legend.
Thanks for watching.
I learn a lot from you Sir. Thank you for your relevant informations !
Thanks. I am glad you enjoyed the video.
What a priceless acquisition to the Poe Museum , it was so cool seeing this letter Chris!! I grew up not far from Tarrytown and we got to see Sunnyside, Washington Irving's home by the Hudson River.❤❤
Thanks for the feedback. I'll have to visit Washington Irving's home sometime.
Love these Chris ❤
Thanks for watching. The stone from David Poe's home has now come to rest at the Poe Museum.
@@chrissemtner fantastic, another piece of Poe history to tell the good folk who will visit the museum. ❤️☘️🙏
She got the date of death wrong.
I always considered William Wilson a generally better tale than Usher because of the psychological depth and references to Poe's private life. It's better than Jekyll and Hyde for me, leaves a huge room for interpretation. But I think that those tales are somehow connected. I love the symbolism of the manor in WW, the amount of hiding places symbolize the recesses of the mind to me. In both tales the houses are "alive", like the mind. When it comes to Irving, I'm surprised that Poe said those harsh words about him, because some of his tales are truly brilliant and they remind me of Poe's stories so much. For example "The Adventure of a German Student", "The Story of a Young Italian" - sure, Poe would use more complicated, sophisticated language (which is sometimes too much for a common reader), but Irving's style of writing is charming and he had very dark, rich imagination too. By the way, you said that Poe wrote some long reviews of Irving for the magazine, do you know if it's available to read and where can I get it?
Ok I found it, for anyone interested: www.eapoe.org/works/criticsm/slm37i01.htm
Edgar, the Poe Museum cat, is very cute while doing Edgar, the Poe Museum, cat stuff
Edgar the Poe Museum Cat is the best at doing Edgar the Poe Museum Cat stuff.
Neat acquisition! I consider Irving's "The Adventure of the German Student" to be the equal of Poe's better tales.
Thanks for the feedback. I agree. In the newly acquired letter, Poe tells Irving that his "An Unwritten Drama of Lord Byron" inspired "William Wilson."
Fascinating! Thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Theres been many .. but the original no doubt was my uncle. Ill never say his name but he is dead now.
The best narrator
Great job Chris, Poe certainly had an intriguing list of ladies in his life! I've always been convinced that his wife Virginia was his soul mate, although there are arguments to be made for some of the others. A close second for me is Sarah Elmira Shelton- the young thwarted love, then years later, a second chance.
Thanks. I agree. Poe never had the same connection with Sarah Helen Whitman that he had with either Virginia or Elmira.
This is creepy for middle school students. A murder scene sensitized for reader or listener appeal. Hhmmmm🧐
Fascinating. Thanks.
Thanks for watching.
Happy Friday the 13th Poe Museum!
So interesting! Thank you!
Thanks for the feedback.
I think that Virginia Clemm was Poe's soulmate, but he and Sarah Helen Whitman would have made an entertaining couple.
Thanks for the comment. I agree about Virginia, but I wonder if Poe ever would have been happy with Sarah Helen Whitman.
he ate this up i fear
One day that book shall be mine , I am not jealous at all!!!
I love Poe thank you. Maybe one day I can visit the museum that would be so cool!
Foenem grave dis dat sh 💯💯💯💯💯
Great run through of the various “Poeformances” and agree with the ratings given. I think Melling was brave to have given the accent a shot. Bravo to all. 👏👏👏🖤
Watching this for english homework 😢
Your sense of humor 😂❤
I saw Edgar who found a mouse and played it to death. 😂 I didn't see Pluto. I heard he had some teeth pulled so wasn't feeling well. My kitty just went through that too. The black kitties were the highlight for me because I have a black kitty too.
