True I like that Mushoku Tensei delves into their characters inner conflict. He was reincarnated into that world in the body of what would have been Paul's son. So at that point he most likely felt detached from him. But he was there to raise him as a father would. He told Rudeus of the mistakes he had made in the past. But even so he does his his best to try and be better for his son. In Rudeus eyes they may not have been that close, but when he sees him die he is overcome with grief. Even if he doesn't say it out loud he views Paul as his father. Zenith situation is saddening she won't be the same, but she will be able to express some of her emotions later not much but its enough.
Yeah I think that moment when he says that quote forced him to realize he has genuine love for Paul. Then at the same moment almost feeling guilty for his death and it was just too much emotion that hit all at once. Like I said too, I just hope he has a moment of closure at least with Zenith. It's hard seeing her in the state she's currently in

Being left within the crystal gifted her with psychic abilities that is the only way she can have a full conversation. One of Rudeus children will have the same ability and they will communicate for long periods of time.
I'm glad that u didn't think bad of Roxy. Some people said she took advantage of the situation, but she's not that kind of person. She just wanted to help rudy. Still is sad how everything ended up. About that line: I don't think Rudy was trying to implied something else. Is just as he says, even if he didn't act like a proper son, or was trying to convince he wasn't part of the family. Paul always seen rudy as his own son.
Roxy is too sweet of a character who only means the best for those around her. Even willing to step out of Rudy's way knowing he has family despite her feelings for him
Paul did a lot for Rudeus: Rudy was the apple of Paul's eye, he spent a lot of time sword training him, even though Rudy sucked. He was upset when Rudy showed early talent as a mage cause that means he took after his mother more than him. When Rudeus wanted to pay for him and Sylphy to go to school, Paul couldn't afford it but he swallowed his pride and asked Eris's Family for a favor* to accommodate Rudy's wish. Paul is worried sick when he runs into Rudeus after the teleportation incident, Rudy doesn't even think to think that Paul or Zenith could have been effected. Right before the Fight Paul tells Rudy to get Zenith back, even at the cost of his like, but in the end Paul swoops in to save Rudy, knowing he would likely die. Paul died for Rudy like a father would for his son, Rudy doubts that he would have done the inverse. Rudy seemed to me to have a bit of a detachment from his isekai parents, like they were caretakers, not so much parents. Not clear if it was just Lillias Panties he was wearing in the baby years, or just any he could find, but that might be an indication that Zenith was just some 20something woman, not a mother figure to him. In all of his internal monologue he calls them Paul and Zenith rather than father and mother. He views himself as older than them and lectures them/ gets upset when they lecture him. He does home some good wholesome family moments too, but they were only sometimes his parents (to him) and sometimes just the people babysitting him in the new world. He wasn't there for his IRL parents when they died and didn't go to their funeral. In this new world (when he wasn't a shut in, likely his excuse for not leaving to go to the funeral) he had years to go to Zenith when he finds out where she is, he instead goes to the Academy, and maybe things would have turned out different if he did otherwise. This is him realizing that he got a second try at life and a chance to have a good relationship with his parents, but now that Paul's dead and Zenith is in this state, this is likely the best he is gonna do, and he failed to have a satisfactory relationship again. He is likely being a bit harsh on himself in light of the circumstances, given how this point in his new life closely mirrors his old life and the lows that he associates with it, but he thinks he could have given more as a son while Paul gave his all as a father. *I'm anime only so I don't know how deep it goes, but there is a lot of little details that show the Distance between Paul and the rest of the Greyrat family and how big a deal asking this favor must be. Paul lived a somewhat humble life in a small village, despite being from a wealthy, noble family; Luke thinks Rudy hates him because they are both Greyrats from different parts of the family; When Eris's dad offers Rudy to knock up Eris so he can marry back into the family, Rudy comments that he doesn't want to get involved with the Main family's Drama and Coups; Ghilane and Elenalise (adventurers from his past) seem to have some beef with Paul so we know he doesn't always leave good feelings in his wake; etc.
