I'm a teenager myself and I felt for Clay EXTREMELY, I like how it's not afraid to be vulgar as teens tend to be, stepping into this foreign world of "growing up" not knowing what the hell you SHOULD be doing. It's a very real experience and while simple, it's important. Watching this was super refreshing...
Yeah, plus the feeling of even when you try to socialize, you think you still somehow mess it up. I’ve had moments like that as a teen too, and you go in nervous and leave just angry at yourself and, similar to what Clay did in that moment, usually I walk away mad at myself.
I was watching RUclips on day. and I saw a video called "Casching Up lost episode" I had never heard of it, but my friend was talking about it, says how God it was, so I desguiseded to watch it. It started with "BRO THIS VIDEO IS F@&$@& HAUNTED BRO CLICK OFF WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE ARE YOU @$&$$" £€ STUPID. YOU KNOW WHAT, FINE, WATCH IT." I thought it was weird, but I kept watch. Little did I know what would happen next... It started at the school, but only the Moose red and Wolf Clayton and robbery kept annoying clay. That's when Clayton Turnerd into Jeff the killer and said" I am going to Jeff the kill u and the killered record. Hyper realistic bleed Cam from Robbie and Clayton Turner back 2 normal but had a bleeding eyes and shap teeth. He looked at me and said "your next" which I thought was weird but then I heard knocked at the door and Cotan was there and he cilled me. I write this form beyond the grave.

Bro this cartoon spoke to me so much in a way no other cartoon has. I’m 16 and most people I know go out partying, drinking, smoking etc and I do none of it and I always feel like I’m falling behind, and I always pretend not to care. I needed Catching Up so much right now. I know you’ll never see this, but thank you so much for all the effort you put into it.

My favorite thing about this series is how down to earth it is. Tons of animated web series and pilots are full of fantasy and action, which is awesome dont get me wrong, but this show is so slice-of-life-y that it actually stands out from the rest. I hope you and your team continues to make this series, it’ll be worth it! (Also I’m realizing the name Catching Up could also reference how the main characters are a cat and mouse, and the cat catching up to the mouse, that’s funny)
This was such a pleasant suprise! I’m so happy for you! This was phenomenal, the character designs, backgrounds, animation style and even voice-actors are all incredible! I look forward to seeing more!!!!!
this felt like a slightly toned down version of Superbad mixed with Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Real slice of life where the subversion is nothing is idealized like so many other high school media. It's just told as it is. I really loved this and am definitely eager for more. I'll do my best to support this series because i really do see something very special and unique here
I just wanna say how amazing this is to see. Going from ranting about Butch Hartman and vailskibum to making your own indie pilot with some overwhelming success. I’m proud of you
I don’t know if you’re gonna see this comment, but I just want to let you know that Catching Up is kind of an inspiration for me. I’ve always wanted to make my own cartoon, and seeing someone who’s wanted that same thing be able to achieve it purely (well, not purely, but you know what I mean) through hard work and dedication is… well, inspiring! Thank you for making Catching Up and I hope it reaches at least like, four episodes or something, it’s been a really fun time and everyone working on it deserves to make some more of it!
THANKS FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO!! As someone working on its own pilot, its so helpful to hear the experience from yours, theres so much stuff that goes into the creation of a single cartoon its almost a miracle these stuff actually get produced
Honestly, listening to Mark talking about the origins and just how much rewrites, changes, and behind the scenes stuff he had to put all of this together made me really appreciate this cartoon more. I hope the best for tou Mark, i love Catching Up!
Teen language is such an odd in-between state for TV. It's either dumbed down so children can watch without repeating bad words, or too mature and usually played by adults anyway. Only here can you have this middle "swear where appropriate" attitude.
Happy this was released and in such a great state, Mark. I 100% get where you're coming from. I started my first animated project in early 2020, and wrapped in 2023. It's almost the same length and while it was nerve-wracking, I'm proud of how it turned out. I have way more appreciation for the craft and feel similarly to you. I find there's a lot that I wish I could change about my project, but as is, I'm happy that it's the best that I could do at the time and with the resources at my disposal. Looking forward to episode 2 of Catching Up!
The bro did what other commenters only SAY they'll do. Dude officially earned gigachad status. You don't talk the talk, you officially walk the walk. Mad respect.
I don’t see anyone speaking about the fact that the cool cat, the one who gives Clay beer, is voiced by Sr. Pelo. And I actually think that’s nice. That means that he made such a great job as a voice actor that not that many people could tell.
I had such a stupid smile watchin this video and seeing the process of you deciding what and what shouldn't be added to your cartoon and really put thought on how you want your characters to act. It honestly gives me hope to do my own series one day once I have graduated from art school and getting a better understanding of the story I would want to tell. This really inspires me as an artist and animator, Thank you Mark!
i love hearing about how you started this whole cartoon when you were just 17. yeah, it went through a lot of changes, but its SO GOOD! and i love it so much! i feel like if you can create an indie cartoon then someone like me could also create one someday if i stick to it and put in the effort
This short inspired me to continue the pilot i started making in 2021 , i unfortunately dont have a team but i know i can do it , congrats on succeeding ive been watching since 2019
Actually though this show is so good! It brings back old cartoon vibes in characters with amazing newer visuals! You and your crew did a beautiful thing and I hope you go somewhere far with this!
I loved the pilot! I just think you need to have more focus on the tone of the series. Sometimes the comedy moves from grounded to goofy which I think is fine but things like the weasel dying in the line can contrast with the grounded tone of the series. Can’t wait to see more of this world :)
That and the "if i want them to curse, they'll curse" mentality is a 50/50. It's def not bad if that's what you wanted them to do, but the shift in writing was too strong. From being family friendly to adult with making out and cursing was such a whiplash. And i was never a fan of the "I've heard worse from actual kids" excuse. You can write stuff that's mature without curses that is also still appropriatefor kids.
I’m so happy for you. I thought the pilot episode was really well made and you and the team definitely deserve as much praise as humanly possible. I myself have been writing a book and that alone has been stressful so I can’t imagine how stressful it was to make a pilot of a show. I hope for nothing but the best for you and the team and I look forward to seeing more!
Watching this feels very surreal as someone who's animated their own pilots and pitch episodes. All the nitty gritty details to working on things, like major changes all the way until the day before release, constant doubt over if you picked a dumb idea people won't get, or the disassociation you develop as you keep working on it and you can't look at it the same way. Among other things, these things have gotten so bad I feel all of it just working on comics. This video made me feel so heard even though I've never talked to you lol. But I have been following you for years and ever since the project first started, I really hope you make more, because it really is such a magical experience.
I relate so hard to staring at your creative project for so long that it just doesn't even feel real anymore, like a Frankenstein's monster of loose ideas, and then someone else looks at it and goes "wow thats cool :D" You genuinely cannot relate to that feeling until you've been in that position. There's really no way to avoid it other than a healthy dose of self-awareness and remembering that nobody sees it the way you do.
Words cannot describe how much I relate to the whole thing of working on a project for so long that every element of it starts to look like mush to you and you start overthinking and overcorrecting everything oh my god
The fact that someone can just say hey I want to make a cartoon, and then make something this good, is crazy to me. This pilot was great, and I hope you continue to work on this.
genuinely hearing that you also second guessed yourself also and that I myself am also possibly going crazy makes me feel so much better about my current script I'm writing so thank you for including that! video and show is awesome!
As a teenager myself, I related a lot to this show , from a clingy best friend to constant social anxiety and just wanting to be left alone. Keep up the good work Mark!
NO WAY!!! 1:06: she worked on Tangled the series???? I LOVE THAT SHOW SM 😍 and i loved this pilot too! The visual gags were hilarious and reminded me of early spongebob episodes! Its truly amazing how you and your team where able to put together a cartoon that means so much to teenagers, thats a hard demographic to market animation too, so mad props go to you and your team Mark! Keep up the great work! I look forward and im super excited for episode 2! 😄
Catching Up was genuinely very good dude, 100% worth the wait. The amount of effort and love you and everyone else involved put into this project showed in every scene. Would love to see more of the main characters again. You and your team's hard work paid off.👏🏻
As soneone who hates loud events and is known to be at times overly optimistic, both characters in the show felt like two aspects of my personality. Loved the pilot and I cant wait to see what comes next.
Honestly, I'm glad the pliot we got wasn't that first animation you scrapped years ago. I can understand you thinking it would be more productive to just have finished that, but ultimately I think the rewrite made the pilot much more realistic and interesting, and it's a much better first impression to your series than the first version would've been.
I’m a lot younger, just in my teen years, and CLAY IS THE MOST RELATABLE CHARACTER I’VE EVER SEEN! In my opinion, the spacing in the show makes it feel longer than it is, which honestly I dislike, but the jokes and gags in the pilot are hilarious! Catching Up isn’t bad nor incredible, it’s just overall a good pilot imo. I’m excited to see more of this wonderful series! Great job in making this great pilot!
It’s been so thrilling to see the hard work pay off Mark. I remember 2 years ago asking how Catching Up was coming along and I’m so happy you finally got it out. It was nice to see your inspirations come into play as well. And your art style. Oh my gosh. It was all so pleasing to look at. Nice job. Don’t be surprised if I support the kickstarter
Dude it’s so cool that you made something like this honestly it’s crazy that the internet in a few days boosted it instead of immediately telling everyone to watch it, what I mean is the people who watched it genuinely had no clue what the video was about they simply just got curios and it was fun watching something like this I wish the best for you.
Best advice I can: you are technically allowed to write about anything you like. Just make sure you have the supporting cast for the event and proper reason to be there (if need be)
im so happy for the indie animation scene - especially during times where the art industry doesnt feel like a particularly inviting goalpost. Also props for funding this stuff out of pocket. If I had the money I would start a studio without skipping a heartbeat haha. Looking forward to more stuff for sure!
I thought clay was a wolf just because of his color and also he seemed like a ‘lone wolf’ so seeing the behind the scenes and production was super neat and I hope you make more videos like this if you get to make more episodes. I hope your success can continue with more episodes and can inspire more to realize you too can make a cartoon.
The pilot portrays your characters perfectly, and I hope they stay this realistic as the show goes on. Rob saying “bitches” has to be one of the best tone-setters I’ve ever seen!
Congratulations to you and the team for making such an amazing cartoon! The chemistry, voice acting, and art were all spectacular and you guys should be beyond proud of what you’ve made.
Honestly i know you said you wanna make things snappier but i really enjoyed the slower pace. Everything had a chance to breathe and I feel like it captured the awkwardness of this period in life better. I know it's not for everyone but I think there's a benefit to it
Good for you for working on this all these years. It's very difficult to make something like this. Many people wish they could create something like you did.
I think you highlight an issue most creators can end up having with their own art and concepts, where they kind of lose the ability to view their own creations in a natural manner. It becomes really complicated since these projects are often personally-driven, but the creator ironically becomes the only person that can't feel satisfied with how the creation is panning out, simply because they've been exposed to all the inner-workings of the project to an exhaustive degree.
It’s really great to see he’s learning from his experience and taking the criticism he gets from his pilot well. I’m super excited to see how this develops and I’ll be patiently waiting for the next episode!
Homestly dude, you deserve having your cartoon blow up with all the dedication you and your team put into it for 4 years straight, I'm working on an animated project of my own and I'm tryna make it look as good as possible, this really inspired me to start experimenting with my ideas more. Stay awesome mark
This behind the scenes discussion on Catching Up is great! I'm currently directing a short film project that involves a lot of 3d animation and effects and its the first time I've gone through a complete production process on my own, so seeing your cartoon and this video is super inspirational. Great job with the first episode! I'm looking forward to episode 2.
DUDE, THE PILOT WAS SO GOOD!!!!! I Hope It Becomes A Full Series Soon, You Have Evolved So Much, From Reviewing Cartoons, To Making A Cartoon Of Your Own, That's Pretty Neat, I Hope The Kickstarter Goes Well, And I Wish You And The Crew Tons Of Luck!
This is really cool dude. I've been gearing up to do this myself and it's cool to know I'm not alone in feeling like I'm gonna fuck up the pilot. I did a small short in college I can't even look at now because it just isn't what I wanted my show to be. But now that everybody is doing this I'm gonna give it a shot. I remember that original short, I looked at it so much during production it just isn't even a thing for me anymore. So I get you having to just put it out. After a while you genuinely can't tell if something is ass or not. Just hope for the best. Also have to say if you see this I like that you just put a straight-up comedy/drama cartoon into the indie scene that isn't just lore and/or story. It's refreshing. A different type of show.
About a few weeks ago i was trying to sleep to this guy talking about cartoons i never watched, and then a few days ago he released an amazing pilot for a cartoon i now am going to adore and I genuinely didn’t think this guy made the cartoon when I watched it on my tv. I didn’t look at the channel i just assumed it was some upstart channel lol
You have no idea how much this show meant to me. I started watching it when I was ironically. Going through a similar situation of not fitting in and moping around. I'm still not fitting in, but this show really touched my heart. Keep doing what you do.❤
As someone who really wants to start an indie RUclips cartoon thingy, this really helps. Your work has inspired me to continue reaching for my dream goal!
I loved the cartoon. It was a fun watch. I'm glad it was successful. Also I think you should bring back Clay's tail. He doesn't look like a cat without it.
Honestly I'm glad you made it that thing where it's like you're falling behind as a teenager. Because I relate to both of them, even to this day. I relate to Rob's enthusiasm and Clay's social awkwardness and feeling like an outcast. And as a teen, I felt I couldn't catch up. I didn't have the same feeling towards boys as others did despite liking them (God it took me too long to realize I might be asexual). My friend had a baby... At 16... Sadly... And of course having to take care of a baby meant we split off as friends. I didn't want to smoke, I didn't want to drink, and even when I do drink every now and again, I still don't like drinking. Also it's really hilarious because I had an idea for a cartoon ages ago called Game Hoppers and it was verrryyy similar to what you had for Rob's early story. Only it featured a bear and a squirrel that are totally definitely not Banjo and Conker respectively! But it also had a fennec fox who came from a Candy Crush like mobile game complete with those misleading ads. and she hated the game so much, she ended up purposefully messing up the code so it would no longer work anymore! I still like that idea honestly! But yeah honestly congrats!!
Dude that pilot was cool as hell. It's really inspiring to see you managed to recruit such an outstanding team and pull off making a cartoon. Most people would only dream of doing such a thing. What a journey that must've been.
Well can you blame us without the traits of a cat they’ll mesh in as a wolf. Like since he didn’t had whiskers or a tail I assume it was a wolf due to it colored. No wonder they keep on saying this is the Tom & Jerry I never seen.
while the pilot felt a bit lackluster to me i think the main idea of this show is really cool and has a lot of potential to be better, this kinda thing is something i definitely struggled with in late middle school/early highschool (and i felt pretty alone about) so its nice to see it portrayed so well here. please keep going :)
I went into the pilot not really expecting to like it, the only reason i watched it was because someone told me that Michael kovach is in it but i ended up really liking it and I'm happy so many people also like it and that it did well
Looks great, need i say more Love the thick black lines makes them look like cardboard cutouts, and honestly i think i like the inconsistent line thickness
As you were saying that after awhile you rewatched your old animatic and realized you liked it, I was reminded of the old writing rule: When you finish writing the book, you should leave it alone for some time (preferably a month or so), before you come back to edit it. The idea is that after certain period of not looking at it, you are more objective and can look at your work with fresh perspective. This is probably what happened to you. You needed a time off from your work to look at it differently and objectively.
You might not have intended it this way.. but I just realized that Rob instantly recognizing that Clay was drunk has some depressing implications for Rob's home life.. (Ngl, his dad does look a tad like he could be an alcoholic in hindsight.) Also mission failed on making Rob more hateable, I think he's adorable and I would protect him with my life.
Congrats for the pilot, it was really good, I loved the plot and the characters' voice, My birthday is on the 8th September so this was an amazing birthday gift!
I genuinely loved the pilot, can't wait for the wave of 1 billion video essays with titles like "How Catching up Changed Animation on RUclips" to pop up
Your cartoon wears its influences on its sleeves, but there's still stuff in there I don't see elsewhere. It's endearing. It's clear to me that you've got a lot of stuff you're passionate about expressing. Let's see what happens.

this felt like a slightly toned down version of Superbad mixed with Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
23:21 If I want the mouse to say bitches THEN HE'S GONNA SAY BITCHES
Teen language is such an odd in-between state for TV. It's either dumbed down so children can watch without repeating bad words, or too mature and usually played by adults anyway. Only here can you have this middle "swear where appropriate" attitude.
@@Rognik and i love it... i can't watch hazbin hotal with family, and cant recommend bluey to friends... this is just perfect..
@@Grunkle_Stanley and why can't you recommend Bluey to friends? Do they not know it's high art?
@@Rognik nha, they just dismiss saying it's for babies... i am 22 and still watching it.
@@Grunkle_Stanley Challenge them to watch one episode (Onesies) then see if they still think the same.
We should look up to him, we need more indie animators
I don’t see anyone speaking about the fact that the cool cat, the one who gives Clay beer, is voiced by Sr. Pelo. And I actually think that’s nice. That means that he made such a great job as a voice actor that not that many people could tell.
I actually really liked the slower pacing of the cartoon, it added a lot of breathing room to the scenes and that really let the emotions sink in
I had such a stupid smile watchin this video and seeing the process of you deciding what and what shouldn't be added to your cartoon and really put thought on how you want your characters to act. It honestly gives me hope to do my own series one day once I have graduated from art school and getting a better understanding of the story I would want to tell. This really inspires me as an artist and animator, Thank you Mark!
I'm hoping we see more action with Clay and Rob going on crazy adventures together.

i love hearing about how you started this whole cartoon when you were just 17. yeah, it went through a lot of changes, but its SO GOOD! and i love it so much! i feel like if you can create an indie cartoon then someone like me could also create one someday if i stick to it and put in the effort
2:20 there he is, I see him, I didn’t see him at first, but I see him now, you can’t hide it from us forever Mark
Brian griffin LMAO
it is simultaneously crazy and awesome to see a youtuber’s dream show/cartoon actually come out, be genuinely good and have lots of potential
This short inspired me to continue the pilot i started making in 2021 , i unfortunately dont have a team but i know i can do it , congrats on succeeding ive been watching since 2019
19:13 this makes the pilot make so much more sense to me because I genuinely had no idea there were clubs for kids until right now
Actually though this show is so good!
Been watching since you did commentary videos, I can't believe how far you've come. Congrats, Mark!
9:14 AWWWWWWW
Catching Up was genuinely very good dude, 100% worth the wait. The amount of effort and love you and everyone else involved put into this project showed in every scene. Would love to see more of the main characters again.
You and your team's hard work paid off.👏🏻
I love the direction RUclips animators are going in, making there own shows and stuff it's inspiring
Thanks so much dude! You genuinely inspired me to be an animator and I’m already working on my channel! Tysm
Also hi
As soneone who hates loud events and is known to be at times overly optimistic, both characters in the show felt like two aspects of my personality. Loved the pilot and I cant wait to see what comes next.
Now finally nobody can say “You can’t say a cartoon is bad, have YOU ever made a cartoon?” about you
Honestly, I'm glad the pliot we got wasn't that first animation you scrapped years ago.
I loved every second of this, probably my favourite indie animation. Hope everything goes well!
Love copyright free white dog with red collar
hmm… wonder who that could be 🤔
@@Cup1dzzz It's probably a reference to "Larry And Steve!"

The pilot was actually one of the best random animations i have came across and im totally sticking around for possible future videos
Keep doing what you do.❤
I just love how realistic the characters feel like they seem like real people which is so seemingly simple but its just done so well
As someone who really wants to start an indie RUclips cartoon thingy, this really helps. Your work has inspired me to continue reaching for my dream goal!
When I first saw this cartoon, I just thought it was you going “See big Studios! This is how you make a cartoon!
I loved catching up so much!
The concept is something I love and I'm excited to see where it goes next!
Congratulations Mark, you went from reviewing cartoons to making cartoons, it goes full circle
I loved the cartoon. It was a fun watch. I'm glad it was successful.
Also I think you should bring back Clay's tail. He doesn't look like a cat without it.
0:39 that's me!!!
I’m so glad your show was successful!
Good luck on future episodes!!
Im glad im an og, and being the hundredth person to watch catching up, thanks LS Mark!
I'd never have known that Clay is a cat if it wasn't for this: 5:48 (I thought he was a wolf 💀)
my biggest (and only real problem) with the pilot was the lineart constantly changing. very happy to hear you and your team is fixing that!
So far the cartoon is great I’m exited to see this grow
Dude that pilot was cool as hell. It's really inspiring to see you managed to recruit such an outstanding team and pull off making a cartoon. Most people would only dream of doing such a thing. What a journey that must've been.
7:09 I actually thought Clay was a wolf, not a cat 😂
SAME. Everyone I was talking to was saying "Clay is a cat", and I was like "Dude, he's a wolf!"
Well can you blame us without the traits of a cat they’ll mesh in as a wolf. Like since he didn’t had whiskers or a tail I assume it was a wolf due to it colored. No wonder they keep on saying this is the Tom & Jerry I never seen.
17:55
"So what are you doing tonight?"
"I dunno, watch TV?"
"Awh, we did that last night"
"I DON'T INVITE YOU TO COME!"
should've been in the show tbh
0:29 Catching uppppp
while the pilot felt a bit lackluster to me i think the main idea of this show is really cool and has a lot of potential to be better, this kinda thing is something i definitely struggled with in late middle school/early highschool (and i felt pretty alone about) so its nice to see it portrayed so well here. please keep going :)
I have to say, this was a nice surprise, and it something that I wouldn’t mind seeing more of when you get the time.
I really liked it, now I want to make something like catching up, thanks LS Mark!
I went into the pilot not really expecting to like it, the only reason i watched it was because someone told me that Michael kovach is in it but i ended up really liking it and I'm happy so many people also like it and that it did well
Looks great, need i say more
Love the thick black lines makes them look like cardboard cutouts, and honestly i think i like the inconsistent line thickness
As you were saying that after awhile you rewatched your old animatic and realized you liked it, I was reminded of the old writing rule:
When you finish writing the book, you should leave it alone for some time (preferably a month or so), before you come back to edit it. The idea is that after certain period of not looking at it, you are more objective and can look at your work with fresh perspective.
This is probably what happened to you. You needed a time off from your work to look at it differently and objectively.
can't wait to see more of the show! 🤩
You might not have intended it this way.. but I just realized that Rob instantly recognizing that Clay was drunk has some depressing implications for Rob's home life..
(Ngl, his dad does look a tad like he could be an alcoholic in hindsight.)
Also mission failed on making Rob more hateable, I think he's adorable and I would protect him with my life.
I hope you manage to start a whole season, it looks so good!
i can't wait to make my own cartoon.
