- With input from Pam and Chris Daniele ( @DirtandGlass ), I (Derek "Deek" Diedricksen) designed and provided the sketches for this cabin, and oversaw its initial framing alongside a group of workshop students at Tiny House Summer Camp in 2018 before things got weird in the US. Chris Strathy (aka "The Capable Carpenter" was on hand to help too). Well, two years later we returned to do some more work on this cool off grid, solar cabin in the woods and had a chance to check out all the hard work and improvements that the owners had since done themselves. Its a simple little cottage in the woods (a mere 8' by 12' at the base- with a sleep loft), but it does have charm and seclusion going for it, among other things. It was also one of many cabins we toured/saw at the workshop. Tiny House Summer Camp 2022 has already been announced btw, and sign ups are in the links down below. Oh yeah, this cabin utilizes a nearby outhouse as building a toilet IN such a small space might not be realistic (and perhaps er, "odoriferously unappealing"). #dirtandglass #tinycabin #vermonttinyhouse #tinyhouseworkshop

I just want to let you know that this is the first one of your videos to show up on my feed in ages. I looked at your posting history and you've been doing them regularly so just wow...
Yep- YT has f'd with my channel BIG TIME the last two years....
Love the contrasting colors on the exterior. All of the windows must bring gorgeous light, the light from free windows is even more gorgeous! The doorknob is a lovely little piece of history. Must have would be hidden storage, mini-kitchen. Free Windows!
YEs, you don't see many detailed doorknobs like that anymore!
oh wow i love this one!
Holyoke! Shout out to Western MA!
this man deserved to have a million subscibers...
I like a lot of windows and the dark upper half. Also love the small wood stove.
Yes, that little nautical wood stove is awesome- not sure the brand though.....
Can you find out ?
@@kevans2337 it’s a Winnerwell medium tent stove!
Thank you I'll check them out.
That is awesome,
Borrowed Time! The stove is great, Pomoly tent stove? Thanks again,Deek! This may be my fav lil home, besides the AFrame!
Wood stove is a Winnerwell medium tent stove!
@@dirtandglass Good to know- thanks man! Love it
DEEEEK... love the black on the shingles. Being a girl, my fave is that kettle and lamp shade. I really must get onto editing that workshop! Sorry it's not up yet. But watching this is giving me that reminder I needed. No excuse, being in lockdown for god knows how long now. So over it! Love from Melbourne xxx
No worries- great to hear from you- and I hope you two are well!!!
Oh look, Deek put up a new video. Everything hiked in, wow. Better than the robot, double wow. Geez what a long walk, where is he going... OH MY GOD that's the one we did the year I went! Best summer camp I ever went to.
..oh yeah, I guess I do remember carrying windows up there.
Man it looks amazing. Not sure it's missing any of my must haves at this point.
Hey Roxie!!!! Glad you had a good time back then! Join us again sometime- lots of other weird builds to come! Be well!
Love it! Such a beautiful setting.
Nice looking cabin.
We had a blast building this with you and everyone at the Tiny House Summer Camp! If anyone wants to see more of the updates we did over the past two years - we’ve posted some behind the scenes videos on our channel!
Feel like I haven't seen your channel in a while but I love your content. The one thing I want to get is a jackery.
Yeah, YT hides quite a bit of my stuff- long story. And yes- those Jackery Solar systems are awesome!
Lots of big windows are a must. Gotta feel like you're outdoors! I live in an A Frame with a wall of windows on one end. Nothing like sitting in the dry, warm house while watching a snow storm.
Okay, now that is one really cool little cabin. Like how good it looks on its exterior. Very functional! God Bless, keep up the good work.
Love it, I could live in a space like that.
I would need a wood stove because I love lighting fires!
Pyro alert! ;) No, I completely agree- one with a front window too
I'm truly impressed - I think that's the first American cabin I've seen built with the entrance door swinging outwards. So happy to see a sensible solution at last. I do hope you can convince the rest of the American nation that a door always should be opened outwards...😉
I’m from Holyoke!! West Holyoke. A little farm with a nice mountain attached. Man!! I’m so in love with all of this!!! I so want to learn how to build simple cabins!! It’s a goal of mine.
I want to build a tiny cabin of dirt. ✋🏿🤚🏿
Lumber is too expensive now. lol
I already have both your books, but being a toy maker I would LOVE to have one of those tiny tiny house books! 😍
This channel is about people just trying to make a home for them selves great job I just ordered you new book thank you
Thanks so much Roland!
GREAT JOB❤
Would love to build something like this in Newfoundland on the ocean
I could see that! Esp with all the windows in this cabin!
Very nice getaway!
Nice!
I need a A frame that's got some eclectic vibes with kick outs. A small bathroom with a living/kich combo and loft that's open. All for off grid mountain property.
Our winners have been contacted and those books have been mailed out- congrats! All else- thanks for watching and for you comments! 'Love reading em!
I dream of living in a 8'x12' with a kitchen and bathroom that slides out onto a back covered deck. :) And I love miniatures & books. :)
Love it…
Sweet!
One day I am determined to have a tiny cabin where I can spend summers and winters writing, looking out at trees and a stream.
What is your MUST HAVE if you were to build a tiny cabin in the woods- and why? Just curious....
A minimum measurement of 10 ft. by 12 ft.
Porch and overhang of the roof!
Water source, wood stove, inside shower, kitchen area, sleeping area.
I've got a design that checks all the marks in 128 sq ft. T-shaped. An 8'x8' living area w/wood stove, small doorway leading into the 4'x16' "T" section, where there is a 4'x5 bathroom, 4'x5' kitchen area, and lastly a 6'x4' sleeping area/extra area.
Peace.
As long as it has a loft bed and a bathroom, I'll enjoy it. I also like cabins with an opening wall to enjoy the outside (like the A-frame deck).
@@Gevedon Agree- who knows- might happen down the road. ALL of this is hiked in- baby steps....
In a cabin my sweetie and I would need everything on one level because of mobility issues. Being over 60 with back injuries we don't get around like we use to.
A stove would be a must for heat and cooking, as would an indoor bathroom space because of mobility issues.
We use to enjoy camping before we got hurt on the job... injuries slowed us down a lot.
We are thinking of moving northern Nevada and are looking at a dog trot style place. The main living space would be 16 maybe 20 feet deep by 24 to 30 feet wide then a 12 to 16 foot covered breezeway with an outdoor kitchen. Then a 16 to 20 foot deep by 12 foot wide studio for friends to stay in or a craft space for us.
The idea of enclosing the breezeway with roll-up doors for cool to cold weather use is also being tossed around.
As for building material we are not sure what we will use but are leaning towards ICFs or Rostra blocks.
my ideal Deek cabin? 1] a wild wall 2] an indoor potty 3] a fridge 4] a comfy bed and 5] cool windows!
Deek, any chance of a build camp in the midwest? Somewhere w/in a day's drive of Chicagoland?
Tiny home must have a spot for my bicycle
could be achieved easily enough! I'm a big biking fan too!
What up deek bro 🤙🏽
Have you ever tried a plywood roof treated with natural preservitives like linseed oil. Then tarring the board seams
No, but might have to try it at some point- thanks!
I would want a house with a good book collection and a couple raised beds out front
Book worm here too- I can second that! And lots of red wine
Is it insulated?
I would like something about the size of my apartment, less than 700 ft.². Have to have a fireplace, only one floor.
Hey long story short due to covid my son and I became homeless and could not find a place to rent. I bought some land and I’m building a house with out knowing anything learning from RUclips videos. Is there any way you can go over in a video or give some pointers on how to install the chimney for the wood burning stove you have.
I wish you all the best, you are showing you son how to be self-reliant, a good thing in unpredictable times!!!
There are quite a few chimney flue installation videos out there on YT if you search for those title-terms.
How much would this one cost to build?
Deek you have proven time and time again with a little planning and elbow grease dwelling and structures can be made inexpensively. What the drawback is affordable land and getting the infrastructure in place can be expensive-(Water and Sewer). Because most of these structures require cash outlays. No bank or real estate lender is going to finance any of this.
Still plenty of cheap land out there though.... esp in less regulated areas.... Anyway, thanks for checking this out
@@anniinthewoods8287 Certain jurisdictions in the US you still have to have sewer infrastructure even if you use composite toilets. Sewer infrastructure in US $1.5 to $5k. Water(Well system if your off-grid) can be $10k. We are having so much controversy and debate about Covid-19 choices and freedoms yet the landowner has no freedom to do what he wants on his own land. We must abide by restrictions of their local municipalities. Once again for the betterment of society.
@@lockedin60 Yes, I'm all for getting back to all of our freedoms. There must be a way to protect our ground water without oppressive regulations, and since people still can have extreme eye sores of properties, get rid of regs. intended to prevent that but which don't truly prevent an eye sore but do prevent nice, cute shacks, tiny homes and so on. You can do a lot in some counties or rec zoned land here in WI ( use it for "camping " ) but then you can't call it your residence... . You'd need to have a relative who lets you used their address for your official residence maybe ? Not offering legal advice or encouraging crime ! Just speaking hypothetically... . Also not an expert on this stuff, at all. My husband isn't here.
@@ajb.822 Wisconsin is a beautiful place. I was in Madison WI about 30 years ago. One night was really nice 70's and no humidity. Unlike NC. The next night was sweater weather in the first of July. A we bit cold for my NC blood and bones. I know there are places and communities who have less restrictive building codes and regulations but may not be anywhere close to civilization. I know people want the neighborhood to look the same a people treat their property with care.
A swing and hammock under a raised porch
Yes!!!!!
is that Dwight Schrute in the background talking
"False"
if i were to build a tiny cabin it would have to be remote and be by a pond or have a brook or stream near or under it. I do fantasize about a tiny island with a tiny A frame on it but the sort of island I'd want would be too small to legally build on ...unlesssssss there were something grandfathered on it .mmmmmmm

Nothing but a glorified playhouse. Smh. Grown little boys resizing their backyard forts. Thought I was actually coming to see something adult and useable. Smdh.
