haha no one is willing to watch a 2 year old video
@@40hzsquarewave ok and?
40Hz Square Wave I just watched it. Good content is timeless. It’s not a flash in the pan like most shit
@@40hzsquarewave Child
Hey i know this video is old but did you try running the game in compatibility mode in win 7? If you said it in the video and I missed it I apologize. That has fixed 99% of my issues with older games
You gotta give credit to them for not quitting.
I just hope they learned and went on ...That is what you think.
quitting never was an option
just look at the world wars
til the bitter end even when doomed from the beginning
Honestly I wouldn’t of made it past the 1st level
It would be better if they did.
@@Blei1986 I mean, WWII was fought because a fascist regime was uprising to take over the world. These were just some guys making a game with very minimal resources. I'm not sure they're equal comparison wise.
I came here expecting to laugh, instead I'm just sad
mood
Damn, say what you will about the game itself, but the determination of Fitzner and his team is commendable. They had every right to cut bait, but saw it through. Can't help but admire that.
Jesus Zamora it had potential it just went through a development and lawsuit hell as we all can see
Indeed. I'd love to see someone take the concepts and do something good with 'em. Clearly the ideas were there.
Too bad he passed away. I'm positively sure he could pull off a good game if he had another chance to do so without all the setbacks.
This might be one of the most emotional videos DX has ever made. It's heartbreaking that Fitzner passed away, but I'm SO fucking glad he and some of the others went on to find success elsewhere because developers like them damn sure deserve it.
Game james The levels were slightly better than Doom 3, but Fear had way better levels than both Doom 3 and Psychotoxic.
my boi returns to review "Big Tiddy Goth GF vs Literally Just Caleb From Blood". everything i've wanted out of life
Lol man, he does look like caleb
I genuinely thought that was just an old Caleb.
BFGFANATIC this title is pretty accurate tbh
Featuring magical black guy
I honestly thought it was caleb🤣
I was 15-16 years old when I sent an application for an internship to NuClearVision, it was the only company I could find having something to do with games in my city. Never got an answer. I found out about the struggles these guys were in years later and now again I see how f*ed up it was. Also now I know why Fitzners page has not been updated. To me this is still some kind of childhood memory and Psychotoxic will keep me entertained on an other level. Rest in Peace Frank Fitzner
Interesting...
this is one of the saddest stories I've heard, I hope one day Fitzner gets an honourary award for dedication and that Psychotoxic gets a sequel with love and care. This story is just to inspiring to let such hardwork disaper so soon. Thank you for doing this video man, i will always be subbed to you no matter your opinion, because you truley have a style to your videos no one else has.
you may wanna delete those 4 comments
Inspiring? 'Satanist evil, science experiment with tits good, fight'?
@@grabble7605 he's talking about the development cycle hell buddy, and honestly the game's concept is pretty interesting, they just got hit by a massive shitstorm and still managed to release the game... talk about determination
Oh drew I didn’t know you watch this guy too
Wait is that the jokah baby?
Let me be honest here, after seeing the video in its entirety, and seeing the mess that was happening in the background of it, I’ll say it, it’s a shit game. Despite that, I can’t really bring myself to hating it.
Think about it, most bad games are mainly from either incompetence or trying to make a quick buck. This? It’s more of just poor timing and luck. It’s actually a bit heart-wrenching to hear about what exactly went wrong.
Dimitri Pia that's how I feel as well and it's also why I find the story of this game's development so fascinating.
It truly makes you wonder what it could've been had the devs not been screwed over. The concept itself seems cool, they were just never given a chance.
Game james for a few levels the level design was awful but I agree most were good, not really amazing, just good.
It’s hard to give the game itself too much credit when there’s so many technical issues, including a message only meant to appear on pirated copies appearing everywhere, including on legitimately bought copies. But everyone around the developers deserve much more shame than the developers themselves, no doubt about it.
@@sheriffaboubakar9720 the level design is shit because it's unfinished, it all makes sense when you realize how many enemies are placed in random locations of the level and how open they are, they literally didn't have time to make the levels better so they just spammed enemies and props around to try to "mask" their unfinished stated.
Quick fix for the cliffhanger last quote from Frank Fitzner:
"With my current knowledge, would I want to do another game today?
Yes, Psychotoxic 2 with my old team, the Vision Engine and a new publisher - but right this time."
I'm not entirely sure whether he meant the right publisher or to do the game right, I believe it's the former, but I may be wrong.
I think he meant both
"Würde ich heute, mit meinem jetzigen Wissen, ein anderes Spiel machen wollen?
Ja, Psychotoxic 2 mit meinem altem Team, der
Vision Engine und einem neuen Publisher -
aber diesmal richtig!"
translated:
Would I want to make a different game today, with my current knowledge?
Yeah, Psychotoxic 2 with my old team, the
Vision Engine and a new publisher -
but get it right this time!
Yeah, when I read "But this time..." and then the long pause I was expecting something and then it just ended lmao.
He obviously meant making the game right this time. (Even without reading the german translation.) He knew the game is terrible. But it's not terrible because of the basics, Psychotoxic could be a good game.
@@Zodroo_TintIt seems like he also meant with a publisher that wouldn't make them go through what they went through when making the game.
'Now I know Angie's chest probably enters the room before her...' kills me every single time. Much like the enemies in the game do when you get bullshitted.
Yet again, a fantastic video.
The unexpected twist near the video's end cought me off-guard, and made me feel genuinely ashamed for rolling with the "making fun of the company" theme.
I have now watched the video twice. And I couln't like it more.
Yah, that was quite a sad twist.
Making fun of somebody always means you are a bad person in a certain level. No offence. Truth.
@@Zodroo_Tint I don't think making fun of conspiracy theorists makes you a bad person, you could say it's wrong but that wouldn't be the point.
There is no theme of "making fun of the company" in this video. That's all on you, sir.
Hory shet this story is horrible. Sad and horrible.
A story that deserves to be turned into a documentary, or even a movie.
I never in my life heard any other game going through such ammounts of shit, AND surviving, even if it was mangled and barely alive.
Thank you for this video, DX.
Miguel Fujigawa it’s almost like Duke Nukem Forever’s story
Except that DNF was at least playable, finished.
FreshBeats Naw. Everything that happened with DNF was the result of pure, unadulterated hubris on the part of George Broussard.
Frank Fitzner and his studio? The world just bent them over.
You're right. This is tragic. This game could have been good.
This game truly deserved better than what it got. This story is just heart-wrenching and tragic. This is the best video that you've ever done, DX!
R.I.P Frank Fitzner.
After the end and realizing how passionate the team leader was i became sad. I mean going unpaid for the employees to gat paid. I have to applaud that. And every member of the team never gave up. The fact that the game came out. That was some determination
God I love the style of your videos. You spent most of the video criticizing the game which kind of left the impression that the developers behind this game are incompetent, but when you went in-depth on the development cycle and the struggles their studio went through, it shows that they actually had talent. They were just really unlucky, and got screwed by some shady publishers. Nuclear Vision worked pretty damn hard trying to get this game finished, despite all the shit they went through. They really could've cancelled the game at so many times, and despite what has become of Psychotoxic, it's incredibly impressive they stuck through. That's dedication.
I wonder how they're doing today, I wish them all the best
Man multiplayer on this would've been something

Yessss... Yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss!
Man, at first, I wasn't too into the totally soundless quotes, but the more I read over them and the end especially, I got the same feeling I did when I read "Akira"... The silence that lets you sit there and just think about it... Good shit.
this is what i admire about you, you didn't blame the devs for the game coming out the way it did bc of the problems they faced, you saw what they did and saw more of the brightside of things how they could've quit but decided not to because they wanted to follow their dream, even if it wasn't going to turn out the way they wanted good on you man and i really enjoyed this video and the different tone of it keep it up man
I like angie's character design though.

Holy fuck, that last picture of the studio was actually depressing, this boi can't even buy a table with how much money was drained out of him to make this game.
Big Tiddy Goth GF deserves to be in a better game.
Amadeus Eisenberg Damn. The last I heard of that game was that anime-esque side-scroller on Xbox Arcade. Was that series any good?
yea
that's actually yumi from code lyoko
Damn the ending hit me like a brick wall. Great video.
The man drove a Delorean. You don't drive a Delorean unless it's your dream car.
The man managed to buy his dream car in his lifetime. Good for him!
I like the ghotic girl, the fps concept, is so so sad the history in the game development , remember me a n64 golden eye and how a dream for create a pc game transform into a nightmare, this is the history of the heroes back the infamous games
The backstories of small game companies are almost always strangely tragic.
Dreams can become nightmares pretty fast
Rest In Peace Frank Fitzner. Thank you for trying your hardest to make Psychotoxic a fun experience. It wasn't your fault and it wasn't your team's fault
IN THE NAME OF THE FALLEN, AND HIS PROPHET, DXFAN619... Finally! A new video! And it’s of a game we’ve briefly talked about before... I recognize these bad graphics, terrible gunplay and that hot goth chick in the g-string.
After Ubisoft cancelled the publishing deal ontop of the team having just paid 30,000 to leave their previous publisher... an old friend would call, telling them he'd found another.
I almost cried when you mentioned this.
22:38 Pfft...what a silly prediction of 2022. "Catastrophic world, threat of world war, evil microbes floating around everywhere wrecking things"...bosh and balderdash!
Ayooooo very interesting story of their development and some great advice i took note of for my own project. Glad to see another dx vid in my subbox again :)

This is honestly just sad. Thing was a train wreck from start to finish. Gotta give the man credit for completing his dream, even if it wasn’t as he wanted.
NOW THAT IS ONE HELL OF A REVIEW!! To be honest, it was EXTRAORDINARY! R.I.P. Fitzner may you release your Psychotoxic 2 with angel's wings
Just wanted to say this is one of the best RUclips videos I have ever seen on any subject ever. An absolutely captivating & remarkable story with exceptional editing.
Thank you for all you do and keep up the great work.
Oh god I remember when u put Pyschotoxic at number 15 on your original top 20 worst games list!
I'd make a sequel to this game to honour Frank and his team's determination if I had the know how.
Been watching, and rewatching, this ever since it came out almost four years ago. This is my personal favorite of the videos you've put out so far. Such a compelling and tragic tale and you tell it with perfection.

Holy fuck the perspective of the game or something is so messed up it’s actually making me feel sick. I have never experienced this playing or watching a game
20:09 "You're actually meant to -- with this awful movement, navigate the entire map, with these signs, fighting enemies you *literally* cannot see. Going from _location to location_ ..."
This is the most accurate description of Death Stranding.
DX..... *sobs quietly* Its been 3000 years... (referencing the ending of Pokemon X/Y)
Welcome back man. We've all missed you!
This year is the year Psychotoxic begins in-universe. And this video continues to intrigue me since 2019-2020.
I go back to it every now and then
Discount Half-Life 2 with FEAR elements *ding*
But in all seriousness, this video is one of your best ever. I was completely entertained by everything about this games and its chaotic development cycle. I'd definitely say that the studio got completely screwed, and wonder if someone can make a game with Psychotoxics premise and actually make it good with modern tech and proper funding.
this game came out before half life 2 did
"...the slow-motion is my personal favorite. Not for any particular reason, but just because of how awful it is." Man that is a particular reason, but if you want a specific explanation of why here is one that I can come up with on the spot: Skittish visual effects of distortion, combined with a more than exaggerated slowdown and inconsistent hit detection make for a laughable power up without any usefulness for the player. Just throw some of your fancy ways of saying that it sucks at it and nobody will ever notice the difference. Also respect for making a unique review pick and not the usual snark bait
I remember playing the demo, tracking down a copy of the game, getting it running on an older XP machine and enjoying it - even with the collision issues. It had that wonderful Eurojank feel to it. The Central Park map was a bit of a pain in the arse, but the overall weirdness of the game kept me interested. For what it's worth, it ran a lot more stably for me on XP.
I wanted this game too, I knew it's bad, I couldn't buy anywhere, I tried to pirate it but I didn't found anywhere there too. Finally I found a gaming magazine what gave away the whole game for free. Bought it, installed it, even the installing was a terrible experience. :)
Never played it. Always wanted but not anymore.
The fact that his game flopped so hard and he worked so hard for it, yet still feels fulfilled. This speaks wonders about our daily lives, never give up on your dreams.
Long time no see dx
I think you meant to say “Long time no SeeX!”
Vyre yea lol
I cannot believe that the team actually somewhat got trough that ordeal, fitzner seems like he was a great guy and his death is a terrible loss.
Absolutely fantastic video. Went from review to documentary to the most emotionally engaging ending. Really shows how much of a struggle and hardship it is to follow your dreams. Awesome video man. Would absolutely love to see more like this

Why you gotta talk with super big words in every single sentence you say
DX, I already knew you made masterful videos... but this tops everything I've seen of you before. And god, what an interesting development story was that of "Psychotoxic", it really surprised me how, when it went so well, everything turned so ugly in just a few months due of the publisher's financial problems... This is, without a doubt, one of your best videos. Keep up the great work, DX!
It's 2022 so that makes this a Psycotoxic year
And now it's 2023
And we're just waiting for a nuclear explosion to occur at a corporate office building
Honestly one of the most underrated RUclips videos ever. Great job man. The history of this game is more interesting than I could have ever imagined.

*suicide rates drop 100%*
Jokes and memes aside, holy shit the production quality is beautiful. It was so worth the wait
*It was worth the weight.*

the liquid in the final level was probably tied to framerate
"A German with a dream that quickly became a nightmare in 6 years." I was thinking in a somewhat different direction.
The enemies turn into Michael Jackson when they die, right? LOL, good to see you back!
The penultimate level thing happens because you're running the game at a gazillion FPS in moden systems, if you limit the game to 60fps it works fine. That was the only game breaking bug I faced this weekend when playing through it, no crashes, no anything. I was surprised how stable it was for how jank the game was, couldn't get the cutscenes to work though. It's a bad game, but hardly the worst ever. Loved the development mini documentary.
An excellent video. One of your best. The best documentation of the history of Psychotoxic. Love your content, mate. Keep it up!
It's impossible to hate this game, knowing it's development issues. It's a very sad story how passionate and hard working dudes got caught up in worst bullshit ever with a bunch of corporate suits who were cartwheeling all around their offices in order to rip everyone off... fucking thrice.
p.s.: Ah yes, the StarForce... StarForce was so infamous back in the day even russian publishers deliberately gutted the dreaded thing in game patches for a number of game releases. Not only the shitty thing was kernel-level exploit that was often blocked by AVs, it could kill your cd-rom drive, windows and god knows what else, on top of straight up not working half the time.
Not impossible to hate it even with context, everyone has personal views
DX Made another Great Video! I even got a bit emotional near the end. It would have been a good game if nothing went wrong.
What a bizarre story! I was always under the impression that video game developers had a rough time now meeting deadlines and dealing with financial trials, but it was even more so during then. It just shows how indie developers, then and now, have to face so much in order to get some quality entertainment out.
"The game takes place in 2022"........*checks calender, sees that it's 12/14/2021* "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-
Still haven't forgotten this amazing video
a few fixes:
1)in the game folder there exist a video txt-config folder open it and change : ["ATIFragment"]=0 from the default ["ATIFragment"]=1 if u have a nvidia card.
2)the open gl 436 is fault from copy protection.
U need to install the game in a virtual machine then take the installation folder in a usb stick. put it in your real machine and then put the only working no cd crack for this game 1.05 version.
ALso i know that exist faulty dvds that have the 436 error that was fixed with exchange of dvd.
3) the movies dont work for one simple reason.
The videos of the game created one layer with direct x and also have two buttons stop and pause embedded in them that created in opengl . Only in windows xp this can exist. In windows vista and later u cant create a video in directx and have in another layer a open gl.

I am amazed by not only the devs dedication and comitment but yours too! Thank you for that!
I'ms SO glad you're still live and active! You've got the best reviews and insight on games and their development.
I've seen some horrible game mechanics, but 5:30 , 10:40 , 14:09 , 21:55 , 26:13 , 30:27 , I've NEVER seen such hilariously ridiculous stuff! Literally. In Tears. 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 The way you told the story behind the game was pretty good. I couldn't turn away. It sucks to see that team go through so much, with so little, just to put out a game that was obviously not what they originally had in mind. 😢 Anyways, welcome back to RUclips! Your Twitch streams are hilarious! You stepped this one up from the last one. 👍👍 Keep 'em coming. GREAT CONTENT!!
Wow, that Vision Engine is something... it brought us such classics as Arcania Gothic 4 and Raven's Cry, which were polished masterpieces with zero bugs or technical issues.
My dude your back.
57:38 This is a very sad photograph of a person who lost everything and now has to turn the PC off for the very last time.. not even desk was there.. so humiliating.. just on the carpet with head looking down.. like a big boy who thought he can play with adults.. :(
Amazing video, DX. Those 60 minutes just flew by.
You can tell it is about to be an interesting game when the protagonist is a goth girl with a G-string showing, and Melina almost as big as her head.
Makes perfect sense.
The successor of AVGN has returned. Welcome back bro.
Future generations must continue the legacy created by the Nerd. ;)
...The Nerd is still around.
OpenMawProductions I know, it's always great to see him do entertaining videos.
I feel like if they remade this game, cleaning up all the garbage story and expanding her powers, this could be a fantastic shooter and extremely refreshing compared to today's market.
I don't see a problem with a top heavy protagonist. Healthy at every size amirite?
Fitzner went through literal development hell. Whatever could go wrong, DID go wrong. A director's vision is never perfected in reality, but dude this shit wasn't even sub par with his original vision for the game. And despite everything that happened Fitzner never gave up and even put his consumers and employees FIRST before himself, if that isn't the definition of an amazing boss, I don't know what is. Rest in peace, he was a good one.
HOLY SHIT!! I REMEMBER THIS FROM THE OG’s!!
Vyre iotyyt
And to think that this could very easily had been Halo. The only difference being they had the backing of a major corporation. If only Nuclear Vision had that same privilege. We could bring the third of fourth installment in a much beloved series by now.
8:40 - it isn't a proper DX review of a FPS without a mention of the first FEAR
Dude, I did a double-take when I seen the notification for this video. I was like, "WTF!? He's back??" Love when you release new videos and I appreciate that you release one big video instead of ten short videos
That was hard watching you trying to input the console commands over and over again. You easily could have restarted the level then put in the commands to get to the next one XD
22:35 as a game dev I can 100% tell she didn't want to sit down because they didn't want to animate it xD the classic!
I dunno is it just me or does it look actually pretty awesome XD I mean it looks way more polished than Rogue Warrior minus MIckey Rourkes awesome voice :/
Psychotoxic is in no way, shape, or form more polished than Rogue Warrior, as bad as that game is.
I feel like this is one of those videos where you kinda see how dev's go through to get their work out there.
The underdogs, the ones that haven't made a name of themselves; Keep going. You'll have your chance, and the recognition you deserve soon enough.
Hey it's 2022

I’ve watched this video many many times in its 1 hr entirety. And I always find new things I’m this video. This time it was just the utter chills and inner struggle the story and the game gives me.
